Stars 11's Complete 2006 with Strong Showings in 2 World Series Tournaments
The Stars completed their 2006 campaign with strong showings in 2 World Series Events in July.

The Stars competed in the 2006 USYBA 12U World Series in Knoxville, TN. The Stars elected to play up in the 12U division, instead of their own 11U division, and made a tremendous showing. The Stars completed pool play with a 3-0 record and advanced to the Major Division of the 12U event. The Stars completed the tournament with a record of 5-1, beat several very impressive 12U teams, and secured 3rd place overall for the tournament.

The Stars then travelled to Orlando, FL for the AAU 11U Nationals at Disney's Wide World of Sports. The tournament featured 48 of the best teams from around the country. The Stars, despite all advise, took only their normal 10 roster players. The Stars raced through the 1st round of pool play with a perfect 3-0 record and secured the 7th overall seed. From there, the heat proved to be too much for 10 players to weather. The Stars lost 2 heartbreaking extra-inning games and were unable to advance into the medal games. The Stars played great baseball throughout the tournament, enjoyed the Orlando area as a team in closing out an exciting and rewarding 2006 season.

Congratulations Stars on a great 2006 and good luck in 2007.

Stars USSSA State Champions
The Stars participated in the USSSA State Tournament June 23-25 at Lakeshore Park in Knoxville. Eleven of the best teams from around the state participated including the Greeneville Marlins and the Middle Tennessee Defenders.

The Stars raced through pool play. On Friday night the Stars shook off an early attack from the Knoxville Thunder Red and walked off with an 11-3 run rule after 4 innings. On Saturday the Stars faced a very determined Franklin Force team, but again managed a 4 inning run rule and a 10-2 win. In pool play the Stars hit the ball well, pitched well, and played solid defense. The Stars pool play performance earned them the #1 seed heading into single elimination.

In the Saturday afternoon semi-final the Stars drew their old rival, the very talented and well coached, Greeneville Marlins. The Marlins came out with a vengeance in the top of the 1st inning with two HR's and posted 5 runs. The Stars battled back in the bottom of the 1st to cut the Marlin lead to 5-2. In the top of the 2nd, the Stars managed to hold the Marlins scoreless. Then it happened. From that point forward the Stars hit the baseball like the Stars are supposed to hit the baseball. In the bottom of the 2nd the Stars posted 8 more runs. Then in the bottom of the 3rd the Stars posted 9 more runs. When the dust, and the shock settled, the Stars walked away with a 3 1/2 inning, 19-5 victory.

The semi-final win earned the Stars a spot in the Sunday afternoon Championship Game with the talented and extremely well coached, Middle Tennessee Defenders. The Stars and Defenders battled to a 1-1 tie after two innings of play. The Stars were hitting the ball well, and had stranded several base-runners. The Stars pitching and defense had limited the Defenders base-runners. The Stars felt confident they would open up at anytime. Unfortunately, the skies opened-up. Steady rain set in and the game was called. The Stars, based on being the #1 seed were declared the 2006 USSSA Tennessee State Champions. Congratulations to the Middle Tennessee Defenders on an outstanding tournament.

Congratulations Stars on being the 2006 USSSA State Champions!

Stars "Win 'em all" at Tournament of Champions
The Stars travelled May 5th-7th to Johnson City, Tennessee for the Tournament of Champions. The impressive field included 32 teams from various states ranging from Georgia through the Carolinas and all the way to New York.

Unfortunately, rain was the dominant story for the weekend. Friday games were cancelled due to rain, including the Stars match-up with the Tennessee Twisters.

Saturday turned out to be a nice day, in more ways than one. The weather was perfect. The Stars collected two impressive pool wins over very talented and well respected teams:

Stars 7 - Roswell (GA) Rockets 4
Stars 9 - Matthews (NC) Slammers 0

The Stars were geared up for single elimination on Sunday. Unfortunately, the rain returned. Heavy rain Saturday night and Sunday morning resulted in the tournament being cancelled. However, the Stars played their best baseball of the 2006 campaign. Congratulations Stars.

Next up for the Stars is the Viper's May Classic in Huntsville, AL May 19th-21st. Good Luck.

Stars Win 3rd Annual Volunteer Classic
Vol Classic Team

The Knoxville Stars participated in the 3rd Annual Volunteer Classic, April 28th - 30th at Caswell Park in Knoxville, TN. The tournament featured excellent competition that included the Mt. Juliet Bearcats and the Greeneville Marlins.

The Stars got off to a slow start. In game #1 the Stars were faced with the talented Greeneville Marlins. The Stars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Marlins capitalized on a couple of Stars errors, and rolled by the Stars 8-3.

Things didn't get any easier in game #2 as the Stars faced the powerhouse Mt. Juliet Bearcats. The Stars, who had previously played their cross-state friends and rivals only two times over the years, had never beaten the Bearcats. In the two previous games, the Stars had chances and leads, but lost close games. The 3rd time proved to be the charm, as the Stars managed a 7-4 victory in a game that was closer than the score.

From there, The Stars rolled along with an 8-2 win over the talented Knoxville Yard, and a 14-3 win over the Knoxville Thunder Gold. The Stars pool play performance was just enough to qualify for the Championship Game.

In the Sunday afternoon Championship Game, the Stars were once again faced with long-time friend and rival, the Greeneville Marlins. The Stars and the Marlins have had many great battles on the diamond over the last 4 years, and this was sure to be another classic. The Stars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. The Stars turned two spectacular double-plays that kept the Marlins off the board through the 3 innings. In the 4th, the Marlins bats got hot, and with a Stars error and some timely hits, the Marlins raced to a 5-2 lead. In the top of the 5th, the Stars got things started with a lead-off hit and a walk. Then a pitch and a swing later, the bases were cleared with a 3 run homer that tied the score at 5-5. The next Stars batter reached 1st and stole 2nd. And then, one more timely hit drove in the go ahead run, and the Stars went to the 6th inning clinging to a one run lead. The Stars held the Marlins in the top of the 6th and walked away with a 6-5 victory. Once again, it was a game that certainly could have gone either way. Congratulations Stars on a great weekend.

Next up for the Stars is the May 5-7, Marlins' Tournament of Champions. This tournament, which includes 32 outstanding teams from all over the eastern United States, proves to be a tremendous challenge for the Stars.

Stars bats dormant in USSSA Super NIT in Atlanta
The Stars travelled to Atlanta April 7-9 for the USSSA Super NIT Road to Disney Tournament. The field featured 24 of the best teams in the country. The star-studed field included 3 of the top 5 ranked teams in the country, the Banditos Black (Woodland, TX), the Turn 2 Rattlers (Houston, TX), and the Temucula Tides (Temecula, CA).

The Stars ability to draw tough pools was never more apparent than in this tournament. The Stars competed in what was clearly the toughest pool in the tournament with the following results:

Banditos Black 11- Stars 0
Effingham Young Guns 2 - Stars 1
Stars 3 - Viper Baseball 2

In the opening pool game on Friday night, the Stars were faced with the Banditos Black, which has been the #1 ranked team in the country for over 2 years. The Stars were excited and confident, unfortunately the Banditos were just too much. The Banditos proved to be the best hitting team the Stars have ever faced. The Stars made a couple of critical errors early that allowed the Banditos to open a solid lead. But, the Banditos collected 11 hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning that secured the 11-0 final result.

In the 2nd pool game the Stars faced the tough Effingham Young Guns. The Stars bats failed to produce any punch and the Young Guns edged out a 2-1 win over the Stars.

In the 3rd pool game the Stars faced the very talented and well-coached Viper Baseball team. This turned out to be perhaps the most exciting game played in the entire tournament. Once again, the Stars bats failed to produce. The Stars limped into the bottom of the 6th and final inning trailing 3-1. The Stars scratched and clawed, and with a walk, a bunt and a base hit, the Stars grabbed a dramatic, come from behind 4-3 victory. The Viper's must be commended for playing a great game that could have gone either way. Unfortunately, The Stars 1-2 pool record was not enough to advance to Sunday's Championship bracket.

On Sunday, the Stars played the Georgia Force in a noon consolation game. After a couple of quiet innings, the Stars bats finally showed a little life. The Stars finished out with a 10-2 victory.

Next up for the Stars is the USSSA Spring Fling in Nashville, TN April 21-23. Good luck Stars!

Stars Win USSSA Diamond Sports Early Bird
2006 Early Bird Team
The Stars participated in the the 7th Annual USSSA Diamond Sports Early Bird March 31 - April 2, at the beautiful Knox County Sports Park, in Knoxville, Tennessee. The tournament feature 8 teams, including the Stars, Cincinnati Flames, Chattanooga Colonels, Marysville(OH) Mitts, Knoxville Impact Gold, Knoxville Thunder, Farragut Flames, and the Knoxville Impact Silver.

Friday afternoon, just a couple of hours before the first pitch, the skies opened up with rain. As a result Friday night games were postponed, meaning all 8 teams would complete 3 pool games on Saturday.

The Stars completed pool play 3-0 with the following wins:
Stars 14 - Marysville, OH Mitts 0
Stars 5 - Cincinnati Flames 1
Stars 2 - Thunder 0

Sunday brought sunshine and single elimination.

In the semi-final game the Stars faced the tenacious Farragut Flames. The Stars bats, which have not shown a lot of life in 2006, were awake. The Stars walked away with a 16-0 win.

In the Championship Game the Stars were faced with the very talented Impact Gold. The Impact Gold can swing the bats, run the bases, and are very athletic on defense. After a 1st inning deadlock at 1-1, the Stars managed to string together a few hits and open a lead. Sound defense and pitching allowed for the Stars to hold on and claim a 7-2 victory. Congratulations Stars on a successful weekend of baseball.

Next up for the Stars is the USSSA Super NIT, April 7-9 in Peachtree City, GA. This tournament features many of the top 11U teams in the nation. The Stars drew a very difficult pool, including a Friday night match-up with the 2005 USSSA World Series Champions, the Banditos Black. Good luck Stars!

Stars Finish 3rd in 1st tourament of year at Border Wars
The Stars played their first tournament of the spring season March 17-19th. The 2006 Border Wars in Chattanooga featured 26 of the best teams in the southeast.

The Stars played well early with impressive wins in their first two pool games, beating the Kennesaw Generals 15-0 and beating the Georgia Rebels 13-3. In their 3rd pool game, the Stars bats failed to produce, resulting in the Stars first lost of the season, to our friend KC and the very impressive Atlanta Monarchs. The Stars completed pool play 2-1.

Sunday brought single elimination play. Unfortunately, the Stars forgot to bring their bats and things got tight. In round #1 the Stars manufactured a 3-2 win over the tough Tennessee Tornadoes. Then in the quarter-finals, the Stars pulled out a 2-1 win over the talented Jackson Coyotes, to advance to the semi-finals.

The Stars and the EC Braves always seem to cross paths on Sunday in Chattanooga. In 2004 the Stars beat the Braves in the Championship Game. In 2005, the Stars beat the Braves in the semi-finals. In 2006, The Stars once again were faced with the always tough East Cobb Braves in the semi-finals. The Stars bats went into cardiac arrest and the 3rd time proved to be the charm for the Braves. The very deserving Braves won the 2006 contest, beating the Stars 8-0. Congratulations to the East Cobb Braves who went on to secure the 2006 Border Wars Championship.

Next up for the Stars is the USSSA 7th Annual Diamond Sports Early Bird in Knoxville, TN March 31st - April 2nd. Good luck Stars!
