Parent Meeting Information September 2013
KINGSTON YMCA HURRICANES PARENT MEETING
Joe Leirey, Head Coach
Parent Advisory Committee - Serena Wunderlich, Kevin Chorzempa, Bobby Davenport, Brian Connolly and James Jolly
Coach Joe opened the meeting by welcoming all parents, returning and new, to the 2013-14 YMCA swimming season and introduced himself as well as listing the coaches for this year's team. He gave brief descriptions for each coach and, when mentioning Coach Chris' and Coach Ryan's affiliations with the Kingston High School Varsity Swimming program, encouraged and welcomed parents to bring their swimmers to the high school on meet nights to cheer on the varsity program - in many cases the next step for our YMCA swimmers.
Joe gave a brief history of his involvement with swimming and specifically the YMCA then segued into the team's "identity":
The Kingston YMCA Hurricanes are a YMCA program and team that also swims/participates in USA meets. YMCA is our primary affiliate; this year we will be participating in five (5) dual meets (while hosting two of them), one Invitational (which we are hosting), North Country League Championships (TBD), State Championships (Ithaca), Nationals (TBD), and new to the league this year - Developmental Championships and Last Chance Meet (we are hosting). The latter most meet is designed to provide our swimmers the opportunity to participate in a championship meet while falling short of the league championship qualifying times; additionally, swimmers wishing for a last chance to obtain cut times for state championships qualifications will also be encouraged to participate.
USA Swimming is used by the Hurricanes to enhance the program and as such, we are scheduled to participate in four (4) meets: Pilgrims Pride (NOV), Harvard (DEC), Starfish (JAN), Region 1s (MAR) - additional meets after States may be scheduled. Meets are posted on the website. Meet entries for the meets are chosen as follows:
USA meets - swimmers/families pick their own events
YMCA meets - coaches pick swimmer events
Credit cards must be on file for the USA meet entries as well as YMCA championship meet entries; dual meet entries carry no cost.
To qualify for league championships, in addition to the time requirements each swimmer must have participated in two (2) dual meets. To qualify for state championships, in addition to the time requirements each swimmer must have participated in two or three (2 or 3) dual meets plus league championships. To qualify for national championships, in addition to the time requirements each swimmer must have participated in two or three (2 or 3) dual meets plus states. The Kingston Snowball Invitational is a national qualifier meet. See Coach Joe with any questions.
The North Country League Championship meet location has yet to be determined (Shen, RPI or Union College most likely).
For state championships, a block of rooms have been reserved for the Kingston YMCA Hurricanes at the Best Western; make your reservations ASAP.
For the Harvard meet, rooms have been reserved at the Holiday Inn Express at Cambridge, Mass. The deadline for reservations is November 6th.
For the January Albany Starfish meet, the Holiday Inn Express in East Greenbush is accepting our reservations at a reduced rate as well.
Should you have any questions about reservations, see our website for more details or speak with Coach Lori.
Meet Entry Sheets for Harvard, USA, Invitational, and Championship meets are in the communication box at the high school pool as well as on the website. Follow the directions carefully - event numbers listed correctly are vital. Sign the authorization on the form to charge the credit card on file.
For YMCA meets, please email Coach Lori if you are not attending. If you have a problem en route, a text or quick email is great as well.
Events for championships: three (3) individual events and two (2) relays; the coaches will pick the swimmers events should they have more than three qualifiers.
All meets (and more so for home meets) parent volunteerism is required to fill the more than 63 positions necessary to successfully run a meet. See Serena and James for listings, sign ups, etc. We have needs for all sorts of jobs - from set up to seating/bullpen to timing to running to concessions to officiating to computing (data entry as well as clock management). Our parent advisory group also needs volunteers for various committees - fundraising, parties, end of year banquet, etc. The meets as well as club operations are dependent upon parent volunteers and we appreciate your support.
Additional fundraising is also necessary to successfully run the club; we will have multiple fundraisers to achieve this including an iPad raffle for which each family will be required to sell at least ten (10) tickets
at $10 per ticket. The tickets will be distributed shortly. Additional prizes for this raffle are a Nook and a swim bag with swim goodies in it. A special prize will be awarded to the swim family who sells the most tickets. On the first weekend of October we held a mini-golf fundraiser at the Sports Cone in Kingston! An additional fundraiser or two will be scheduled in the beginning of 2014. If you have special talents in this area, please volunteer to work the fundraising committee.
