Kingston Swim Club: Our Coaches

Joe Leirey - Head Coach
Joe has served as coach or head coach for Kingston Hurricanes Swim Club since 1984.  Joe is a graduate of Kingston High School and Cortland State University.  During his high school tenure, Joe swam for Kingston High School three seasons and worked at the Kingston YMCA teaching swim lessons and serving as the Assistant Swim Coach for the 1977-78 seasons.  At Cortland, he became Assistant Coach of Cortland’s YMCA Stingers where he was supervised by Head Coach Dick Williams. During his stay with the Stingers, Joe helped conduct two YMCA State Meets and he went to Y Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on three separate occasions.  One year, their team earned “Top 10” status in our nation.  After graduating from Cortland in 1983, Joe returned to Kingston and began coaching the Hurricanes with Anne Butts.  Throughout the years, Joe has been very involved in the Kingston swimming community and his other activities currently include; KHS Varsity Swim Coach, Hurley Tiger Sharks Head Coach, Lifeguard instructor and WSI instructor.  Joe resides in Kingston with his wife Jean and their three duaghters; Katherine, Erin, and Amy.

Chris Sammons - Coach
Chris is a graduate of Kingston High School and a former varsity swimmer lettering all four years on the team.  He is also a graduate of SUNY Binghamton with a degree in History and, a Masters in Secondary Education from SUNY New Paltz.  Chris is currently head coach for the KHS Girls and Boys Varsity Swim Teams.  After the first two years as the Head Coach of the Girls team he has compiled a 15-8 record. He has qualified many of his swimmers to the NYS Championships.  Chris was the Head Coach for the Hurley Tiger Sharks, leading the Team to 7 championships and a 65-12 record.  He recently stepped down from this position so he could devote more time to his Varsity and KSC coaching responsibilities.  Chris resides in Hurley, with his wife, Erika and son Drew.

Stephanie Chan-Haver

Kathy Doxtader - Coach

Coach Kathy Doxtader has been a member of the Kingston Hurricanes Swim Club coaching staff since 2001 and has primary responsibility for the Developmental Group.  She is ACSA certified as a level 2 Swim Coach.  Kathy has also been a coach for the Hurley Tiger Sharks since 1994.  She is a graduate of SUNY, Oswego with a degree in Secondary Education/Physics. She has been a tutor and a teacher for over 18 years.  She completed her Masters work at SUNY New Paltz in Education. She has been a long time substitute at Saugerties High School. Currently she is a preschool teacher at Good Shepherd Montessori in Rhinebeck.  Kathy was a competitive swimmer at Schenectady Swim Team and Woodin Club.  She has four children, Jennifer, Brian, David and Jimmy and, lives in Hurley with her husband John. She has a son-in-law Jet, grandson Walter and daughter-in-law Erin.

Ryan Haver - Coach
Ryan is in the newest member of the Kingston Swim Club coaching staff.  He is an Alumni of the Kingston program and will be entering his 2nd season as the assistant coach for the Kingston Boys Varsity Swim Team.  Ryan attended and swam for SUNY Oswego where he was a 2 year captain and 15 time SUNYAC conference finalist.  Previous coaching experience includes assistant coach to the SUNY Oswego swimming and diving team, Oswego Lakers swim club, as well as the Hurley Tiger Sharks.  Currently, Ryan teaches 7th and 8th grade science at Wallkill Middle school in Wallkill, NY and is completing his Masters Degree through the NYIT in Instruction Technology.
