COMETS ADVANCE TO MCFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
21-0 win against Timberwolves sends Kings to Columbus for the title game

Quarterback Dominick Goodman ran for 146 yards and passed for 142 to lead the Kings Comets (10-1) to a 21-0 victory in the Mid-Continental Football League semifinals against the Southern Michigan Timberwolves (9-3) Saturday at Lockland High School.

The win advances the Comets to the MCFL Championship Game for the first time in team history, where they will face the Columbus Fire (10-0) in Columbus next Saturday. The Fire defeated the Detroit Seminoles, 21-18, in the other semifinal.

The match-up will be the fourth MCFL Championship Game to be decided by teams that went through the MCFL season undefeated and the first all-Ohio MCFL Championship match-up since 1992.

Goodman engineered scoring drives of 55, 42, and 65 yards on Kings first three possessions in the game, as the Comets did all the game’s scoring in the first 20:01.

On Kings first possession of the game, Goodman converted third downs with runs of five and six yards before breaking a 33-yard run down to the Southern Michigan 1-yard line. Keith Brooks pushed his way into the end zone on the next play to put Kings up, 7-0, halfway through the first quarter.

Following Terrill Byrd’s stop of a fourth-and-one run by the Timberwolves at midfield, Phillip Barnett made a diving catch of a pass from Goodman for a 34-yard touchdown that extended the Comets lead to 14-0.

On Kings’ next drive, Goodman completed passes of 21 yards to James Frazier, 11 yards to Daryl Moore, and 19-yards to Billy Back before scoring himself on a 1-yard touchdown plunge to put Kings ahead, 21-0, with 9:59 remaining in the first half.

That was more than enough scoring for the Comets, as the defense recorded its second shutout of the season by limiting Southern Michigan to 87 yards of offense and five first downs one week after the Timberwolves gained 313 yards and picked up 14 first downs in a 51-10 rout of the Cleveland Cobras.

Defensive end James Spikes reached Southern Michigan quarterback Lamar Toney for three sacks and led the defense with seven tackles, also forcing a fumble. Byrd had the Comets other sack, one of three tackles for a loss he made in the game. Austin Goss, Larry Byndon and Billy Back also recorded three tackles, with all of Back’s coming on special teams. TiRon Jones added his team-leading fifth interception on the year.

Goodman’s 146 rushing yards are the second-most in Comets history, behind only a 155-yard rushing game by Brooks against the Michigan Twisters on August 14, 2004. Goodman’s effort also helped the Comets to a season-high 234 rushing yards in the game, and a 22:22 advantage in time of possession.

The Comets are the first Cincinnati-area semi-pro football team to advance to a league championship game since the Cincinnati Heat defeated the Cincinnati Jets, 26-20, for the Ohio Valley Football League title in 2000.
