COMETS BRING DOWN THE THUNDER
32-6 win against Derby City gives Comets two wins in one day

Defensive end Rico Middlebrooks set a team record with four sacks as the Kings Comets (8-1) defeated the Derby City Thunder (8-5) of the Alliance Football League, 32-6, Saturday at Stuart Middle School in Louisville, Ky.

Two of Middlebrooks’ sacks came in the final minutes of the first half, including his first which caused a fumble that Tommy Sewell scooped up and ran 36 yards into the end zone for a touchdown at the two minute warning.

That play helped Kings overcome a sluggish start which saw the Comets move backwards on two of their first three drives.

Quarterback Dominick Goodman was able to generate some offense on Kings’ fourth drive. After rushing 18-yards into Derby City territory, Goodman found a wide-open Daryl Moore for a 37-yard touchdown that put Kings ahead, 6-0.

Sewell’s touchdown return less than two minutes later put the Comets ahead, 13-0, at halftime, and a 53-yard kickoff return by Goodman kept the Comets momentum going into the second half.
Goodman followed his return by completing three passes to Phillip Barnett, the third being an 8-yard touchdown.

Derby City answered with a 4-yard pass from Elonzo Scott to Steron Davidson on the first play of the fourth quarter, but the Comets controlled the game from there.

Goodman converted a fourth-and-10 with a 26-yard run, and found James Frazier for a 24-yard touchdown three plays later to extend Kings’ advantage to 26-6.

Austin Goss fell on a loose ball on the kickoff that followed, and John Washington pounded in the game’s final touchdown from six yards out.

Middlebrooks picked up his third sack in the third quarter and broke the record of 3.5 sacks set by Zack Werner in 2007 by reaching Scott for a 20-yard loss in the final minute.

His effort enabled the Comets to hold their opponent under 60 yards of offense for the third time in their last four games. Derby City was held to minus-6 yards rushing on 18 attempts, and 60 yards passing, including 41 yards in losses on Middlebrooks’ sacks.

Terrill Byrd led the defense with seven tackles, four for a loss, and Sewell and James Battle followed with five stops each.

The Comets gained 247 yards of offense, with Goodman completing six of 14 passes for 95 yards and rushing four times for 82 yards. Goodman also had 73 yards in returns.

The game replaced Kings’ originally scheduled MCFL contest against the Michigan Stampede (0-8, 0-7 MCFL), for which the Comets were awarded a 2-0 forfeit victory.

The Comets close out the regular season with a game against the Flint Fury this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Little Miami High School. At 7-0 in the MCFL, Kings has already clinched a first-round bye and a home playoff game on October 10, and could clinch the No. 1 seed with a win and a loss by the Columbus Fire (8-0, 7-0).
