The Kings Comets (9-1, 8-0) completed an undefeated Mid-Continental Football League season by holding off the Flint Fury (4-6, 3-5) for a 42-32 win Saturday night at Little Miami High School in Morrow, Ohio.
A 64-yard interception return for a touchdown by Austin Goss helped Kings build a 20-0 lead early, but a Fury team that needed to win to make the MCFL playoffs for the first time ever rallied with 20 points in the final two minutes of the first half.
Chance Garner started Flints comeback attempt with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Rashemeer Neal on the first play following the two-minute warning.
Kings quickly struck back with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Dominick Goodman to Daryl Moore with 50 seconds remaining in the half, but Flint answered with a three-play drive which concluded with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Garner to Lamar West.
A long return by Keith Brooks set the Comets up at midfield, and kicker Travis Johnson was sent on to attempt a 65-yard field goal with 0.6 seconds left. Johnsons low kick was blocked and picked up by Carlyle Dunigan at the Flint 20. Dunigan immediately pitched the ball back to Chrishaun Verdun, who ran 82 yards for a touchdown that, along with Andre Broachs 2-point conversion run, made the score 27-20 at halftime.
Verdun finished with 212 return yards, including 130 yards on four kick returns. Garner finished the game by completing 16 of 31 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns, also rushing six times for 35 yards and a score. Broach ran for 118 yards on 16 carries, and caught a game-high six passes for 38 yards.
Kings quarterback Dominick Goodman matched Garner with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, completing 9-of-17 passes for 121 yards and rushing six times for 33 yards. Goodman also had a 58-yard kick return to open the game that set up the first of two 42-yard field goals by Johnson in the first quarter.
Goodman led a three-play scoring drive early in the third quarter, completing a 30-yard pass to Phillip Barnett and a 13-yard touchdown to Josh Dugan to extend Kings lead to 35-20 after Dugan also ran in a two-point conversion.
A 25-yard end run by Rickey Staley pushed Kings lead up to 22 points, 42-20, with 10:36 remaining, but the Fury scored on a 1-yard run by Garner and a 17-yard run by Broach to make the game close.
The win enabled the Comets to join the Columbus Fire as the 16th and 17th teams to complete an MCFL regular season unbeaten and untied. The last time two teams made it through the same season with perfect marks was 1999 when the Kalamazoo Tornadoes and Southern Michigan Timberwolves both finished 8-0.
The Fire earned the top seed in the playoffs based on a strength of schedule tie-breaker, leaving the Comets the No. 2 seed. That gives the Comets a bye for the first round of the playoffs, and the right to host a semifinal game October 10 at a site to be determined.
