COMETS COMEBACK IN CLEVELAND

Kings scores final four touchdowns in 39-20 win

The Kings Comets (6-1, 6-0 MCFL) forced turnovers on three straight possessions in scoring 29 straight points to gain a 39-20 come-from-behind win against the Cleveland Cobras (5-3, 3-3) Saturday at the Garfield School in Lakewood, Ohio.

Cleveland was looking to extend a 20-10 lead midway through the third quarter when Tommy Sewell forced a fumble that TiRon Jones picked up and returned 50 yards to the Cleveland 16-yard line. Dominick Goodman hit Phillip Barnett for a touchdown on the next play to cut Cleveland’s lead to 20-17.

The Cobras next drive ended less than two minutes later when Larry Byndon intercepted a pass over the middle and worked his way 74 yards down field for a touchdown to put Kings ahead, 24-20, with 3:28 remaining in the third quarter.

Cleveland drove 52 yards on its next drive into the fourth quarter, but Brandon Martin forced another fumble with a hit after a swing pass, and James Spikes fell on the ball at the Comets 11-yard line.

The Comets were able to pull away from there, first with an 89-yard drive that culminated in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Goodman to Barnett, and later with an 8-play, 60-yard drive that took 6:25 and ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Keith Brooks.

Goodman completed 7 of 13 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns, filling in at quarterback for James Frazier, who was unavailable for family reasons. Goodman also led the Comets with 86 rushing yards on nine carries.

Brooks had for 51 yards rushing and 51 yards receiving, including a one-handed catch on a fourth down in the second quarter that resulted in a 9-yard touchdown and tied the score at 10 after Cleveland had jumped out to an early 10-0 lead.

The Cobras had built their lead behind the passing of Damien Ivory. Ivory completed 20-of-37 passes for 321 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to Roland Pryor on a fourth-down play in the second quarter and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Kover in the third quarter.

Larry Stover caught five passes for 148 yards for the Cobras, with each of his receptions converting either a third or fourth down into a first down.

Kings defense did manage six sacks, with Sewell and Sean Middlebrooks each being credited with 1.5. Terrill Byrd, Cam’ron Wrencher, and Spikes also recorded sacks.

The Comets are scheduled to play the Derby City Thunder in Louisville in a non-league game next Saturday that will replace their scheduled contest against the Michigan Stampede. Kings will receive a forfeit victory against the Stampede, assuring the Comets a first-round bye and a home game in the semifinal round of the MCFL playoffs, September 10. The Comets conclude the MCFL regular season September 26 with a home game against the Flint Fury at Little Miami High School.
