A record-setting field goal by Travis Johnson and a 30-point second quarter propelled the Kings Comets (5-1, 5-0 MCFL) to their fifth straight win, 54-0, against the Wisconsin Wolfpack (0-4, 0-4) Saturday night at Little Miami High School in Morrow.
Johnson converted a 56-yard field goal on the Comets first possession of the second half, breaking the Mid-Continental Football League record held by Rich Wrightington of the Louisville Bulls, who made a 54-yard field goal in 1997.
Johnson had missed on a 54-yard field goal that would have tied the record in the first quarter, but made field goals from 30 and 31 yards as a part of the big second quarter.
The 30-point outburst was also aided by mishaps on four straight punt attempts by the Wolfpack.
James Battle started the trouble by tackling punter Chuck Gabert at the 3-yard line after Gabert was unable to handle a punt snap. Dominick Goodman made a leaping catch two plays later for Kings first touchdown of the game.
The next time Wisconsin lined up to punt, the snap went through the end zone for a safety.
Johnson followed with his second field goal of the quarter to make the score 15-0, after which Andre Jackson picked up a blocked punt and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown, with Billy Backs two-point conversion run making the score 23-0.
One more fumbled punt snap was recovered by Darryl Riston in the end zone to complete Kings 30-point quarter.
Johnson opened the scoring in the second half with his record-breaking kick, after which Kings tacked on scoring runs by James Frazier, Keith Brooks, and Dominick Goodman.
Goodman accounted for 215 yards, finishing with five catches for 75 yards and a score, 4 rushes for 62 yards and a score, completing two-of-three passes for 60 yards, and returning a punt 18 yards.
For the second straight week, Kings defense had a dominating performance. The Comets recorded their sixth shutout all-time, first since a 49-0 win against the Jackson County Black Bears June 21 last season, by holding the Wolfpack to minus-9 yards of offense.
Terrill Byrd, Rico Middlebrooks, and Sean Middlebrooks each had a sack among the Comets 12 tackles for a loss. James Battle and Austin Goss each had an interception, and Larry Byndon and Terrio Henderson recovered fumbles in addition to the one Riston recovered for a touchdown in the second quarter.
The Comets are off the next two weeks, with scheduled bye next week and the league taking a break during the Labor Day weekend. Kings will return to the field Sept. 12 to take on the Cleveland Cobras (4-2, 2-2) in Cleveland. The Comets next home game will be their regular-season finale, Sept. 26 against the Flint Fury at Little Miami High School.
