The Kings Comets (4-1, 4-0 MCFL) used a dominating defensive effort to set a new team record for points in a game Saturday night at Africentric High School in Columbus, defeating the Ohio Swarm (0-4, 0-4), 55-7.
The Comets held Ohio to 42 yards of offense, recording four sacks among their 17 tackles for a loss. The defense also picked off four passes, two of which were returned for touchdowns by Rickey Staley in the fourth quarter, and recorded a safety.
The safety was a key in helping Kings jump out to a 15-0 lead within the first 7:04 of the game.
A 9-yard touchdown pass from James Frazier to Phillip Barnett gave Kings a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. On the Swarm’s next possession, Rico Middlebrooks forced Ohio quarterback Cyrus Norwood to throw the ball away in the end zone, resulting in an intentional grounding call and a safety. On the free kick that followed, Dominick Goodman was able to slip one tackle, reverse field, and break free for a 60-yard touchdown to make it 15-0.
Goodman added the Comets only other score of the first half with a 15-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
Phillip Barnett added his second touchdown of the game, a 14-yard reception, in the third quarter. The touchdown was his eighth receiving touchdown on the year, breaking Daryl Moore’s single-season record of seven set in 2006.
Ohio was able to post their only points on a 2-yard run by Norwood in the third quarter, but Staley’s two interception returns in the final 4:47 led to a 21-point fourth quarter for Kings. John Elder added a 3-yard touchdown run in between Staley’s scores.
Defensive tackle Terrill Byrd led the defensive effort with six tackles, all for a loss, including two sacks. Linebacker Tommy Sewell matched Byrd with six stops, with four of his going for a loss. Cam’ron Wrencher had two tackles for a loss among his four tackles, and Sean Middlebrooks, James Battle, Larry Byndon, Rico Middlebrooks, and Marcus Harris each had one tackle for a loss.
