KINGS SWEEPS THROUGH THE SOUTH

33-12 win against Louisville puts Comets in command of division

Records continued to fall as the Kings Comets (3-1, 3-0 MCFL) completed a sweep of their South Division rivals with a 33-12 win against the Louisville Bulls (1-2, 0-2) Saturday night at Hi-Five Field at Little Miami High School in Morrow, Ohio.

The Comets beat the Indiana Mustangs, 51-18, last week, and now have a two-game lead in the South Division with wins over each of the other two teams in the division.

Quarterback James Frazier surpassed single-season records for passing yards and passing touchdowns while Travis Johnson equaled the team mark for longest field goal.

The win also allowed the Comets to match their best start in Mid-Continental Football League play. The 2005 team that went on to garner the only playoff win in Comets history also began league play 3-0.

Johnson’s 53-yard kick started the scoring in the first quarter, matching his team record set against the West Michigan Force September 23, 2006.

Frazier followed with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Fugate, then matched and surpassed the touchdown mark with a pair of long passes that broke open a 10-6 game.

A 50-yard strike to his brother, Phillip Barnett, two seconds before halftime put Kings ahead 17-6. Frazier then concluded the opening drive of the second half with a 47-yard connection with Dominick Goodman.

Barnett added a one-handed, 9-yard touchdown grab later in the third quarter, a pass that gave the Comets a 30-6 lead and Frazier the team’s single-season record for passing yardage.

Frazier now has 855 passing yards and 11 touchdowns on the year. The previous marks were 784 yards and nine touchdowns by Casey Strong in 2006.

Travis Johnson added a 33-yard field goal for Kings in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

Defensively, the Comets limited the Bulls, perennially one of the MCFL’s top rushing teams, to 109 rushing yards on 32 carries.

Louisville quarterback Marcus Warren was forced to pass 32 times, completing eight for 129 yards. Warren was responsible for both Louisville touchdowns with a 13-yard connection with Tyler Holland in the second quarter and a 10-yard pass to Bernard Barnes on the first play of the fourth quarter.

University of Cincinnati product Terrill Byrd paced the defense with three sacks among his five tackles. Larry Byndon finished with a team-high 11 tackles, including a sack that led to a fumble. Tommy Sewell added eight tackles, James Battle an interception, and TiRon Jones was credited with four pass break-ups.

The Comets travel to Columbus next week to take on the Ohio Swarm (0-3, 0-3). Kings returns to Little Miami High School August 22 with a contest against the Wisconsin Wolfpack (0-3, 0-3) scheduled for 7 p.m.
