Detroit scores 12 points in final minute for 26-17 win

The Detroit Seminoles (1-1) scored 12 points in the final minute to thwart an upset bid by the Kings Comets (0-1), 26-17, in the Comets 2009 season opener Saturday night at Little Miami High School in Morrow.
The Seminoles are the defending Mid-Continental Football League champions while the Comets are coming off back-to-back 3-8 seasons.
The Comets defense limited Detroit to minus-2 yards of offense in the second half, but turnovers on each of the Comets final three plays from scrimmage enabled the Seminoles to score 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Kings took its first lead of the game, 10-7, on a 30-yard touchdown pass from James Frazier to Phillip Barnett 57 seconds into the final quarter.
Detroit regained the lead when Deral Miller brought back a punt 75 yards for a touchdown four-and-a-half minutes later.
Another long connection between Frazier and Barnett, a 37-yard strike, set up a 1-yard scoring run by Frazier to put Kings back on top, 17-14.
The Comets appeared set for their first victory in six games against the Seminoles by recovering the on-side kick that followed with 2:53 remaining, but Guy Goodlow recovered a fumbled snap for Detroit just after the two minute warning.
The Seminoles were unable to gain any yards, but Corey Phillips’ 54-yard field goal tied the score at 17.
Joel Simpson intercepted a pass on the Comets next snap and returned it to the Kings 18, setting up a 35-yard go-ahead field goal by Phillips with 15 seconds left.
Robert Cohen intercepted a pass on the final play of the game and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown to set the final score.
Barnett led the Comets with 79 yards on three receptions, each for a first down or touchdown. James Frazier threw for 119 yards by completing 7 of 18 passes and ran nine times for 41 yards. Larry Byndon led the Comets with 10 carries for 46 yards.
Tommy Sewell paced the defense with 10 tackles while James Spikes recorded Kings’ only sack.
Travis Johnson added a 51-yard field goal in the third quarter, two yards short of his team record.
Robert Perkins picked up 74 yards on the ground for Detroit, but was held to negative yardage in the second half.
Although both teams are members of the MCFL, the game did not count against either teams’ league record.
The Comets travel to south to play the Louisville Bulls (1-1) next Saturday before opening up MCFL play at the Southern Michigan Timberwolves (1-0). Kings returns home to Little Miami High School August 1 to play the Indiana Mustangs at 7 p.m.
