Kings Basketball Academy Newsletter 2013-2014 Season!!!
mgg

Dear Kings Players and Parents,

It is with great excitement to announce that I have been offered and will take a Player Development Coaching position with the Memphis Grizzlies starting January 6th of the new year.  This is an amazing opportunity to move forward with my career at the highest level and I just could not turn this down.  Over the last seven plus years we have built a very respected program with family values and high level instruction.  We have grown so close and I can not express in words the impact you parents and players have had on me as a coach and more importantly as a person.  I would not be in the position I am now today without you guys supporting me, inspiring me, and trusting me with your boys. The success we have had as a program, the success I have had personally as a coach is owed to the fact that we have had the greatest parents and kids. I am forever grateful.

Although I am moving in a few weeks, I would like to take this time to make a few more announcements and give you guys an overview of where our Kings Program is headed in the near future.  My brother Matt will be taking full control of the program.  Included in my jealousy of his great looks and physique is also my jealousy of his endless energy, enthusiasm, and passion for our program.  I am 100 percent confident that not only is he going to maintain the reputation we have built, but I am very excited to see him take our program to even greater heights. To assist Matt with the daily basketball operations will still be “Momma” King...My Mom Linda has been running the show since 2006 and will continue to be the greatest team mom of all time.  She truly is the greatest. Also, Joe Abunassar and Malik Clark with their expertise and experience will continue to assist Matt with practices and games as well as program development the remainder of this year and beyond.

Below is an outline of what our program will be executing going towards the new year.  Please take note of all announcements which will be effective January 1st.

NEW TOURNAMENT JERSEYS

  • Our new tournament uniforms will be ordered and printed by our first tournament in January.  We will be receiving Nike Dri-Fit tops and bottoms with backpack and a long sleeve Dri-Fit Kings Basketball shooting shirt. Attached is a sneak peak of what our new uniforms will look like.

NEW PRACTICE REGIMENT

  • We will be having two separate practices every Tuesday and Thursday night.  Our newly forming 9u-12u Kings teams will practice from 6:00PM-7:20PM and our 13u-14u will practice from 7:20PM-8:50PM.  This benefits all players giving much more attention to details while keeping our patented intensity and energy.

  • We will also be adding a Wednesday “Individual Skills Development and Conditioning Program” running from 5:30PM-7:00PM.  Drills will include shooting, ball-handling, footwork, Post-work among other skills with also plyometrics, core work, agility, and strength work outs.  All age groups included during time.

NEW PROGRAM MONTHLY FEE

  • We will be raising our Monthly fee to $105 effective January 1st.  The fee includes the new practice schedule and also the additional day a week of individual skill and conditioning work. As usual, DO NOT MISS PRACTICES and TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF OUR INDIVIDUAL WORK WEDNESDAYS

NEW TEAM STRUCTURE FOR 13U and 14U TEAMS

  • We will be creating a Kings “Black” and “White” teams for both the 13u and 14u division of our program.  Both teams will participate in tournaments (Could be same or Different locations) and have same jerseys.  We want to create the best environment to develop each player to full potential.  We are hoping to have each team contain 8-9 players MAX per tournament.  The 13-14 year old age group is vital for individual development and we feel that having two teams will maximize productivity and development.

In closing, I am ready for Memphis working at the NBA level and making each and everyone of you proud to be associated with our program. I am also very excited about the conclusion of our 2013-2014 Kings Basketball Academy Season.  We have some big tournaments and positive changes that I know will make our program even better.  I know we will all execute our plan to keep building up our program.  We started this program to properly prepare the youth of the Ventura County and Southern California for the next level.  Through trust, respect, discipline, loyalty, love, and fun our Kings culture and system will continue to develop and thrive.  We will continue to be the best program around.

Thank you so much for all your support. If you have any questions or need some time to talk, please do not hesitate to call me or contact me the next two weeks before I leave.

Love,

Adam

ARC Christmas Classic Tournament Recap!!
14u pic

Kigns 13u and 14u win ARC Christmas Championship!!!

Our 13s went 3-1 and avenged an earlier loss to CBC beating them in the championship 56-43.  I was unable to coach our championship game due to our 14s playing at the same exact time but Coach Matt and Coach Joe led us to victory.  With the help of 4 three each from Jack Abunassar and Anthony Frausto and the MVP performance of Bryce Kilkenny, our boys bounced back from a disappointing opening defeat.  From what I was told and watching the video, Bryce Kilkenny was a monster in the championship going for a 20-20 performance and dominating the bigs of CBC.  I am so proud of all the boys and excited for next weekend's tournament in Anaheim.

Tournament MVP: Bryce Kilkenny

Our 14s went a perfect 5-0 in the tournament beating team "Elite" which is also known as the CAVS in one of the more exciting games in Kings program history.  Both teams played extremely physical, fast, and superior talent.  The game resembled a high quality high school varsity game and the intensity in the gym was amazing.  The CAVS are a program rival to us as I played for them as well as my brother Matt.  And there is no sweeter victory then beating them especially in the fashion we did.

Tied at 50 with 20 seconds left we had the ball.  The CAVS trapped poing guard Kihei Clark which we knew they would do and talked about it in our last timeout before the possession.  This trap created a "broken play" where talent, fundamentals, and skills must take over.  As the clock winded down Austin Galuppo had the ball with 6 seconds left and crossed over penetrating the defense drawing Kihei's defender.  Austin made the correct play and kicked out to Kihei for a deep open three pointer which hit nothing but new breaking the net as time expired giving our boys the championship!!! It was a total team effort as everyone had impact in the game and the tournament.  Wes Slajchert carried us early as we struggled to score and struggled to get stops. Wes drove hard to the rack all night long getting to line making free throws and drives while guarding their talented point guard all of the second half.  Riley Battin carried us in the middle of the game dominating on drives and offensive rebounding opportunities and is an absolute nightmare matchup for any team around.  Then Kihei carried us home first driving and dropping a pass to Elijah Wolf to get our run started.  Then a huge step back baseline jumper and of course the finishing touches with his three pointer.  Austin was steady all game and probably the most impressive thing was how although he wasn't having the best of performances, he stayed with the game and maintained composure executing down the stretch.  Our energy off the bench was phenomenal as guys came in and out producing and playing so hard.  I was so proud of each of our boys. It was an amazing game.

Tournament MVP: Kihei Clark

Our 8th Grade/14u Team beat Chaminade JV, Thousand Oaks JV, and Agoura JV en route to their Second Championship in the JV Division this Fall.  After blowing our Chaminade JV, we battled with former Kings Head Coach and my best friend Kyle Kegley and his very physical and determined Thousand Oaks squad.  It was a very intense game with both teams making runs. Thousand Oaks executed beatifully with their multiple sets and chaning defenses multiple times giving our guys multiple looks on both ends.  It was a high qulaity high school game and not a typical AAU game where strategy, game management, and focus on both ends would win it out.  We ended up making a strong run in the second half with point guard Kihei Clark leading the charge.  Kihei was unstoppable in transition with pin point passes and timely pull up jumpers.  Austin Galuppo hit some huge threes in the second half and Riley Battin was a load down low.  We ended up winning by 7 points and was a big time experience for our guys.

In the Championship game we faced a very good Agoura JV team who also ran solid sets and switched defenses.  After starting out the game dominating, Agoura went to a Box 1 on Riley face guarding him and not leaving his side.  Most players who are mentally weaker would have complained and stop playing.  Not Riley, Riley stayed focused and executed everything we asked him to do.  He stayed involved and did not force shots or plays.  His maturity and basketball IQ where a pleasure to watch and was a huge impact through out the game.  Austin Galuppo finally got loose in the second half hitting multiple threes which made Agoura once again switch to a triangle 2 defense.  The game was back and forth and Agoura built their biggest lead to 6 with only 4 minutes to go.  Our Kings fought back getting impact from Khari, Keaton, Luke, and Elijah who all produced in big moments. Elijah had a huge steal and finished off a pass from Kihei.  Keaton energy and defense was much needed.  Bobby finished off the game and executed our sets to perfection.  Khari really got our team going out of the half with his pull up game and drives. And Luke had the biggest basket of the game in the closing seconds.  With only 12 seconds left and down 1, Agoura made a huge mistake and went man to man to close the game.  We immediately went to our "Flat" set isolation for Kihei who beat his man off the dribble and dropped another great pass to Luke for the game winning lay-up!! It was a very exciting game with high intensity and a big time learning experience for our guys.

This tournament really gave our guys a high school experience and what a real high school game will be about.  High School teams are prepared, are dicipline, and very physical.  I was very proud of our guys on not only the championship but our maturity and composure throughout.

Our 12s/13s, 13u Come Up Short in The Finals...In Overtime and by 2 points. Our 14u lose in Semi-Finals of Soph/Frosh Divsion

I was very proud our 12s/13s group and our 13s who both made the championship games in their respected divisions.  Both combined to go 6-2 in the tournament beating quality teams and playing up.  I was especially proud of our 12s/13s group and Head Coach Matt Mazarei is really doing a great job with them.  They have showed vast improvement in all areas of the game and it was fun watching this group play this weekend.  They lost in an overtime nail bitter and a couple calls here and bounce there we could have pulled it off.  As I always say, I despise 3 things in life...1. Lakers 2. Kobe and 3. Ventura County Refs. Our guard play from Hogan Zuckerman was big time all weekend and the twins of Jack and Sam Boyd always producing on high levels.  I was also very proud of our bench play from Aaron Li who had very productive minutes, Jacob Davis who shot the ball very well and is an amazing offensive rebounder, and Jonathan Gerwein who is showing improvement in all aspects of the game. We will need Varun Patro and Jack Zhao to be even more assertive for this group to keep improving.

Our 13s went 4-1 in the 14u Division losing in the Championship by 2 points.  We lost Clark Slajchert early in the day with an ankle injury and although guys stepped up to replace him, not having him definietely hurt us down the stretch.  Our play however was solid and our patented ball movement, dribble drive, and skill level was on display.  Bryce Howard was special all weekend long and his improvement from last year and also the year before when he became a King is evident.  Zachary Songco also had a very productive tournament has been playing well all Fall. Bryce Kilkenny had his best tournament of the Fall since his injury in the Summer.  Bryce was every where in the boards, ran the floor hard, played great defense and overall was great on both ends.

Our 14s playing up in the competitive Soph/Frosh Division showed flashes of good basketball butthe same issues arise.  This group plays hard, plays smart, plays together, but we do struggle offensively to score.  We need more production in play making ability and breaking down defenders.  We need to play faster, stronger, and more physical.  I couldn't catch most of their action, but the action I did see I was very proud of our effort and the way we were playing.  We are all improving and come Winter Season we should be hitting our stride.

KINGS 14U WIN JR. HOOPS AAU SPRING INVITATIONAL!!

Our 14s took home the 14u Elite Division Championship over the weekend getting revenge vs. the West Coast Warriors in the championship game Sunday.  We lost our first game of the tournament to the West Coast Warriors by 11 and won our next 4 games vs. top competition.  We beat OC Premier on a buzzer beater three pointer from Austin Galuppo 49-46.  On Sunday we beat a very tough Jr. Hoops team coming back and winning in overtime 41-39.  In the semi-final we beat the top team in Pool A AVAC Hoyas in convincing fashion dominating them in every facet of the game.  The win secured our spot on the championship game with a rematch vs. the West Coast Warriors.

The Championship was a very very physical affair.  West Coast Warriors have a very good point guard and even better big guy whom dominated us in the first game.  This time around Kihei Clark and Riley Battin came ready to play.  ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTION Riley was special in the championship game scoring from all over, utilizing an array of post moves, jabs, pull ups, threes.  Riley absolutely dominated their big guy en route to at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.  He was extremely impressive and I couldn't be more proud of his big time perfromance.  The player that really got the championship off to a great start was newcomer Austin Galuppo!! Austin rained threes from all over the floor knocking down 5 in the first half.  Austin is athletic, fast, and physical. He rebounds with such ferocity and has great leaping ability.  He was extremely important to our press break and hit some amazing shots down the stretch to secure the win.  Austin probably finished with 20 plus points with 8-9 rebounds and 5 plus assists.  He was amazing all tournament long and receive a well deserved ALL-TOURANMENT SELECTION.

Point Guard Kihei Clark was great all tournament long.  In our semi-final vs. AVAC Kihei destroyed AVAC's guards with his creative and effective handle easily breaking down defenses and throwing pin point passes all over the floor.  In our very important pool game win vs. OC Premier, Kihei was special.  He ran our offense to perfection picking his spots to get his own and getting everyone involved. He was so good we kept running our "Horns" set for him and they could not stop him from getting to where ever he wanted to go.  Kihei was just as good in the championship game.  I'm extremely hard on our point guards in our program, especially Kihei.  I demand too much, and Kihei delivered.  He ran our offense, he broke the press, and had so many timely baskets.  I always tell our guys just how much this game is predicated on timing, flow, momentum, runs, and how every single play in every single minute effects the outcomes of games.  When the West Coast Warriors looked like they were going to make a run to come back there was Kihei hitting a big three, a huge pull-up jumper on the break, a huge breakdown dribble to a pass that led to a foul.  Kihei is growing as a player and hopefully he will grow literally!!!

Everyone was so solid this past weekend.  We definitely would not have won without the contributions from Cole Palka.  He rebounds, plays extremely hard defensively, finishes at the rim and had some timely free throws. Grigory Manyak also had a nice tournament finishing better at the rim and using his athleticism all over the court.  Guard Quinn Maloney is a smart player with high IQ, he plays hard and you cant leave him open.  We will even need more contribution from him going forward. Newcomer Chenbin Huang had some real flashes of being a player.  Hes a solid shooter and deceptively athletic when he drives to the rack.  With more reps and confidence, he will be a very nice contributor going forward.  Lastly, Aiden Hughes had some nice contributions.  He was most impressive in the semi-final game vs. AVAC with offensive rebound put backs and always aggresive defense.  Our 14s are coming together at the right time.  And when we get Wes Slajchert back from injury, this will be a very scary team going forward in tournament play.  I am extremely proud of our effort and improvement.  It was a great weekend.

Kings Program goes Undefeated in Ventura

Our Kings 12u went a perfect 3-0 playing up in the 13u division.  I feel our 12u played the best out of all our teams sharing the ball, defensive intensity, and overall skills.  D.C. was phenomenal all tournament and has a great knack of putting the ball in the basket.  D.C. was quick to loose balls, his defense is much improved, and whenever we needed a big shot or a score to stop the other team's momentum, D.C. supplied it.  It is no coincidence that D.C. is at every single practice working extremely hard and it is showing in the game.  Bryce Howard was also once again great.  His speed, athleticism, quickness is really remarkable at his age.  Bryce does everything for our team, scores, passes, defense, rebounds, blocks shots, steals, and plays all positions out on the floor.  He has a unique set of skills and his versatility is so valuable.  It is also no coincidence that Bryce has not missed a practice all year and his skill set is finally catching up with all that potential.

Newcomer Bryce Kilkenny is quickly becoming a favorite in our Kings family.  His works extremely hard, rebounds the ball, finishes around the basket, and plays great defense.  Bryce is tough as nails. Zachary Songco has stepped up his game, not just being a spot up shooter, but more of a creator and penetrator.  Zach continually got to the line, ran his fastbreak lanes and attacked the defense.  Zach probably had the highlight of the tournament with his unbelievable reverse lay-up that had nothing to do with luck and looked very clean.

Newcomers Jack Zhao and Justin Stanziano have quickly gotten acclimated and are nice producers on the floor  Justin might be the best shot blocker in the Kings program.  He utilizes his long arms and innate timing ability to block many shots which leads to fast breaks.  He rebounds well.  Has nice touch from 15 ft in and can finish with both hands.  With his size and basketball IQ, Justin has a bright future. Jack is another guy who can play multiple positions well.  We ask him to be a guard and big guy at times and for some in this program, that would be too hard to accomplish.  Jack plays very hard, makes the right plays, and with continued improvement can defenitely help us offensively. Isaiah Hogan also had a very nice tournament on both the 12s and 13s.  He looked healthy this past weekend and it showed with his game.  He was aggressive on both ends and was very valuable to both teams.  Isaiah is very solid defender with his long arms and speed and offensively he is really getting the spacing and picking his spots much better.

Overall, I was very happy with the 12s.  They are the best in the program with talking on defense, rotations, and aggressiveness.  They compete hard and had refs, the scores table, and opposing coaches very impressed.  I was proud of this group.

Tournament MVP: Demtrius Calip

All-Tournament Selection: Bryce Howard

Our 13u also went 3-0 starting off the tournament avenging our loss 2 weekends ago to the Thousand Crush.  We started off extremely slow nursing a 10-7 lead in the first half and as you probably guessed, I was pretty frustrated with our play, but boy did we come out in the second half.  We destroyed them in the second half with our defense.  Khari Osborne-Roddy was great on their point guard frustrating him, dominating him defensively crushing his will to play.  Our ball movement was better in the second half vs. their zone as we worked it inside to Daniel Foldes and Keaton Yellin.  Both did a very good job of attacking when they had the opportunity and passing it out to our guards when the defense collapsed. We skipped the ball all over the floor for easy shots, and created so many turnovers into baskets.  That 10-7 halftime lead ended up being a 48-17 win for us as we enjoyed that win.

Our second game was much tougher vs. the V.C. Pirates.  They came out extremely hot jumping on us early building a 20-6 lead before we even knew what happend.  They played pressure man defense and were very solid with their fundamentals.  I have to give our guys credit as we executed our Memphis offensive set to perfection and our poing guard Javon Jones was dominant.  He literally took over the game an FINALLY starting playing like the player I know he can be.  He constantly harrassed their best player and point guard into numerous turnovers that led to points.  He hit threes, he moved the ball, and he ran our high pick and roll perfectly for lay-ups or passes.  We came up in the second half and took the lead late in the game.  The last 3 minutes were back and forth as we would score, then they would. Down 1 with 20 seconds to go we moved the ball into Khari's hands for a very nice 15 ft. jumper.  We got the stop we needed and ended up pulling out that game 40-39.  It was a huge win for our 13u and we made a unbelievable comeback and finished off a game so well.  Everyone contributed to the comeback and that is the type of win that we can build on going forward.

Our third game on Sunday was vs. Hard Work Basketball our of Simi Valley, and our 13s coming off the mometum of Saturday impressed with a huge margin of victory.  Mekhi Medley stepped up on Sunday with his best performance.  When Mekhi is confident and making plays, shooting the ball, playing defense, he is one of our better guys and he came to play on Sunday.  Once again, Keaton Yellin was great.  He had a great tournament.  His defense and rebounding was very consistent and is offensive game is coming along.  Keaton is attacking the basket instead of settling for outside shots and utilizing his size and athleticism. Instead of taking deep 15-18ftrs, now Keaton is pulling up for 10 ftrs and making them.  He gets to the line, he talks on defense, and was much better this weekend vs. zone defenses.  D. Foldes is also improving.  As usual, in the Fall, Daniel is a very important part of the Kings team.  He is our best offensive rebounder, maybe in the whole program.  He gives us multiple possesions and I know he wants to be good.  He comes to practice (even when he has another game on Thursdays) and is improving his game.  I was very proud of the 13s this past weekend.  We are getting better and more confident.  Guys are stepping up their games and producing.  We cut down on our bone head turnovers and made great plays.  We got good shots, shared the ball and this group is really coming together.

Tournament MVP: Javon Jones

All-Tournament Selections: Keaton Yellin and Khari Osborne-Roddy

Our 14s were the team to watch in this tourney.  Maybe the most talented of our teams, the 14s came out Saturday and destroyed the first 2 teams they saw in front of some big crowds with opposing coaches and players and fans watching.  We were impressive.  Our defense was great on Saturday. Our team speed with Kihei Clark, Pearson Parker, and newcomer Brian Devareux was on display in our patented "Swtiching" defensive pressure.  Our three guards caused havoc all over the floor forcing turnovers and converting with highlight passes and finishes.  Our front court of Riley Battin and Grigory Manyak did a great job playing the back line getting steals and converting on lay-ups.  Our role guys Quinn Maloney, Justin Fleckenstein, and Aiden Hughes alsoc contributed heavily on Saturday with great shooting, rebounding, defense, and overall performance.  Saturday was a good day. However...

Our 14s had a very tough game on Sunday in the Semi-Finals vs. the Calabasa Chaos.  We came out way too confident and our defensive pressure and intensity was non existent.  And I have to give Calabasas credit as well, they had a guy who could really play and some tough interior guys who caused us trouble all game.  They got our big man Riley Battin in foul trouble early and when that happens we are a different team.  Riley is very valuable to our success and when he is aggressive on the boards, defense, and offense we are hard to beat.  With Riley playing with 4 fouls pretty much most of the second half, for some reason we were getting killed on the boards.  Our guards were not boxing out. Our bigs were not boxing out. And frankly with under a minute to go, down 4 and Calabasas ball, I was already planning my post game speech.  But our 14s were clutch.  We forced a missed shot, moved the ball and found Brian Devareux for a three pointer...1 point lead.  Playing hard defensively, we got called for a very questionable call and Calabasas made 1 out of 2 free throws.  Off the miss Kihei came down the lane and made a very nice driving floater to tie the game and force overtime.  In overtime, kihei made a huge jumper to get us started to give us a 2 point lead.  After Calabasas tied it with only seconds remaining, we pushed the ball swung it around to Kihei for a three pointer at the buzzer and although the shot fell short, the whistle blew and Kihei was on the floor fouled.  With no time on the clock Kihei hit the first free throw and that was the ball game.  Fred Rogan was all heated, but we escaped and showed some character pulling out that game.  We had so many turnovers, so many missed shots, so many mental mistakes and still won.  We can not play like that against elite teams and expect to win.

Our championship game vs. Hard Work Basketball was another tough one.  And also another team who played us zone.  We got zoned all tournament, and when our shots are not falling, we are very beatable. We executed better in this game and our guys stepped up with big baskets but not until the final minutes did we finally break the game open.  Nursing a 6-10 point lead all game, our guys blew it open eventually winning the championship by 18.  Our 14s had some nice spurts on Sunday, but did not put a consistent effort on both ends for 40 minutes.  We are not good enough to play in spurts or to take opposing teams lightly.  We have to play harder, smarter, and better is we will succeed.  I was happy we won the tournament, but I was not happy with our overall play.  I expect better, because I feel we are better than how we played.

SGV Aloha Challenge Tournament Recap...14u WINS CHAMPIONSHIP!!
sgv

Congratualtions to our Kings 14u/JV Team for winning the Championship in the SGV Aloha Challenge over the weekend.  Our squad went 4-1 with wins over 5 on five, Southeast Warriors, Baseline to Baseline, and avenged an earlier loss to AVAC in the championship.  Our 14u team is really coming together with better chemistry, ball movement, and defense.  We played very well all tournament long and I was very proud of our effort.  Our 14s have a very good opportunity to be the best Kings team we have ever had.  If we continue to improve, execute, and play as hard as we are playing then this will be our best team in the last seven years.

Our 13u team went 3-1 in the competitive Elite Division with wins over SGV, Redondo Phoenix, and AVAC.  Our only loss came to Covina's Finest whom seemed to have a mix and match team made up of players from multiple teams with different jerseys. We led at the half and was playing very good basketball, but their overall team size and skill eventually won out at the end. Our 13s played very well and I am very proud of the way we played and represented our program.  Our 13s have a ton of respect from every opposing program, players, and fans that watch us play.  Makes me proud how appreciated we are by outsiders who watch us play.

Our 12u team went 2-2 on the Elite Division with two very tough losses to two very good programs in Jr. Hoops and Rockfish. Jr. Hoops eventually won the Tournament championship and we loss to them by 2 points in a very back and forth game.  We had a chance to tie at the end of the game, but our lack of experience cost us.  We lossed to Rockfish by 6 in another close one but their tall, very mature "6th grader" beat us down the stretch.  Our 12s went 2-0 on Sunday winning the Consolation Championship beating a very good OC Rain team by 17 which to me was the best game this group has ever played.  Our pressing "switch" Defense and our offensive ball movement was very evident and our 12s grew up.  In the second game we beat the GameTymers by two points.  We were down the whole game and were not playing well at all, but good teams find ways to win and we eventually did.  It was a great comeback being down by double digits and a great weekend for our 12u team.

Hotel Information:

Hi Guys, Sorry for the Delay, Been a VERY busy 2 weeks for our program.  As you can see above, We play EARLY Friday!!!

Some Ideas instead of Driving up at 4:00AM are...

1. Prices are a lot lower on Thursday Nights in Vegas. The School is in SOUTH VEGAS.   So hotels such as SouthPoint, Excalibur, Luxor, would all be solid options.

2. You can stay an added night at your current hotel. But that may be too much money.

3. Drive up at 4:00AM.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience. I hope everyone can make it up early Friday (Except Ron who has Summer School).

Swoosh March Madness Tournament Recap

The Kings Basketball Program went 6-1 over the weekend at UCSB with our 11u winning the Championship!!!

Our 14u went 2-1 losing to eventual champion Beast Up in our last pool game.  Our 14s at times looked really good executing and shooting the ball with the confidence, but were once again plagued by inconsistent play.  Its been the same story all year with our 14s as we just can not put a full game together.  One very bright spot for the 14s was the play of Sam Orue.  Sam had such a great week at practice preparing for the tournament and it carried over to this last weekend.  Sam shot lights out from deep and was aggressive all weekend en route to being on the All-Tournament Team.

Another bright spot was newcomer Gavin Hale.  His size, athleticism, and his willingness to work as hard as possible is a very nice addition to our team.  He rebounded well, finishes around the basket and has a nice touch from the outside.  He's only going to get more and more comfortable and his potential only being a true 13 year old is high. Hopefully we can carry the momentum of our 2 wins over the weekend and learn from our 1 defeat into Palm Springs this upcoming weekend.

14u All-Tournament Selection: Sam Orue

Our 12u went a perfect 4-0 over the weekend crushing the competition.  We cruised into the finals defeating rivals Ventura Heat (White), Camarillo Swoosh, and Team 805 by margins of 20 points plus.  Only having 6 players, our guys relentlessly attacked the opposition offensively and defensively with aggressive play.  And the player who stood out the most was our tournament MVP Jaden Casey.  Jaden was fearless with attacks on the rim and on defense. Jaden's speed, strength, and athleticism were on full display all tournament long.  His dazzling finishes at the rim, his steals, and pin-point passing on the break led us to victory.  In the Finals we played the top Ventura Heat 11u team and after a very back and forth first half where the refs gave us 2 technical fouls, and I feel were clearly not giving our kids a fair deal, we really put it on the Heat in the second half eventually winning by 25.

Clark Slajchert ran the point well all tournament long and broke out of his little shooting slump in the Finals knocking down outside shots from everywhere.  Ryan Cartaino played huge getting all the rebounds no one else wants to get to ignite our fast break and he too broke out in the Finals and played a great game.  Zachary Songco shot the ball very well all tournament long as he is establishing himself as one of the better shooters in our program.  Newcomer Jack Abunassar is getting more comfortable as he gives our team another smart steady point guard who pushes the ball, makes very good decisions, and can finish on the break.  And Isaiah Hogan is gaining very valuable on court experience as he's putting together his raw talent and potential with learning how to really play the game.  All in all it was a great tournament for our 11s.  We are builiding up our chemistry and with Bryce and Trevor coming back this weekend in Palm Springs, I'm looking forward to how much better we can get!!

11u Tournament MVP: Jaden Casey

11u All-Tournament Team: Clark Slajchert and Ryan Cartaino

Friday, March 9
Palm Springs ARC Duel In the Desert Tournament Recap...

Our Kings 11u do it again taking home the championship going 5-0 vs. very good competition in Palm Springs.

Our Kings 14u did not have the same success as our 11s but played with heart and played very well at times vs. some tough teams.  The director of the tournament told me we were in the toughest pool with the 14s and it was true.  Our first game vs. VBA was a defensive battle.  The game was very much back and forth with both teams playing extremely hard.  Points were at a premium and with the us being down 31-30 with a few minutes the team with the final run was going to win.  We just couldn't make the big shots down the stretch and lossed 38-30.

Right after the game we had to travel all the way back to Cathedral City to play the toughest team in the tournament...NSB.  They were super athletic, could shoot, tall, long, and really run up and down.  Our players were a bit tired from the VBA game and just could not find a rhythm all game.  Our guard play which was really good vs. VBA hit a wall and we just had too many turnovers to compete.  They would break our jump switch easily for easy baskets and we had no legs when we shot the ball.  Christian Juzang carried us throughout making jumpers and driving to the lane but we did not have the balance attack to win the game.  We made a valiant comeback to pull within 9 at the end but ended up losing by 12.  They were a very good team.

I was not in attendance for our last game vs. the OC Panthers team due to being at the 11s until there was only 4 minutes left in the game.  We were down 13 points but Coach Malik and the guys put on a furious comeback. From what I saw we played amazing basketball. Our press brought us back causing a ton of tunrovers and we converted on many jumpers.  Wes Slajchert got in the lane for two pull ups and Kihei Clark came off screens to hit another as our comeback seemed like it would lead us to victory. However, it was a little late as time ran out and we lossed by 4 points.  I was proud of our comeback and the way the boys played.  They fought hard and came back not giving up.  I was much more happy after this game then I was the night before.  Although the 14s didn't bring home the wins we were looking for, they played hard and had bright spots.  Sam Orue continued his good play from Santa Barbara into this tournament being aggressive and productive.  Harrison Pyros was a rebounding machine but got hurt in our second game and we really missed him in the last game.  Brett Triebold always brings hard work and had some very productive minutes.  Missing Trevor and Riley really hurt us and we can't wait until they return.

Our 11s were simply amazing all weekend.  We played fast, aggressive, unselfish basketball throughout the tournament with everyone stepping up at times throughout the tournament to lead us to victory.  It was truly a TEAM Championship and I could not be more proud of the way our boys played. Opposing coaches, refs, parents asking where we are from and complimenting so much on our style of play.  It made this coach extremely happy.

We started off pool play right with a win over Mark of a Champion.  We cruised to victory with our 'Switch" defense and fast offense moving the ball from side to side until attacking .  This would be a theme throughout the tournament. Highlight of this game was Jaden Casey guarding their big guy.

We just worked on fronting the post in the practice before the tournement and our guys executed it beautifully thorughout the tournament.  Jaden was harrassing him and did not let him get comfortable.  If it was not Jaden, it was Bryce Howard.  Everyone played unselfish and we won by 20 plus.

Our next pool game was vs. our rival the Cavs.  They had some new players but we took control early driving past their pressure defense for layups and put backs. Our guards were magnificant handling their pressure.  Clark Slajchert and Jack Abunassar really handled the pressure and got our guys into the flow.

The Cavs do a good job of not letting you run anything so our guys just simply outplayed them.  And the one who was really beating them up was Ryan Cartaino.  He must have averaged 10-15 rebounds a game for the tournament.  Ryan was a beast all tournament long doing all the dirty work and getting a ton of offensive rebounds. His ball handling and decision making were also on display against the Cavs pressure as he would really help out the guards. We caused turnovers and just played good unselfish offensive basketball leading by 12-15 the whole game and holding them off at the end for a 10 point victory.

Our third and Final pool game may have been our toughest test in the tournament.  San Pedro Knights had a very good big guy and very good guards.  The game was back and forth all first half and we could not pull away.  San Pedro made a nice 7 point comeback and tied the game at 24 with about 10 minutes to play.  Then our bench went to work...We were rotating guys in and out all tournament long bringing 4 in and 4 out and just making mass subs a lot.  Our 11s are so deep and there really is not a "bench" and "starters," everyone contributes so much and we are truly a team.  The catalyst for our run was the play of Trevor Howarth.

Trevor was a mad man on the boards all tournament long and he was all over the court igniting fast breaks and causing turnovers. Another catalyst was our new player Jonny Juzang.  His length and speed, and skill were on display throughout the run as his anticipation for steals ignited many breaks that he would finish concluding with a picture perfect 2 on1 executed perfectly with Zachary Songo.

Another major player during the run was Bryce Howard.  Bryce was great all tournament long.  His length and speed and skills as well are top notch.  He's so athletic and fast and his basketball skill level is quickly catching up.  When our first five guys came back in they had a comfortable double digit lead and extended it to finish off the Knights by 15 plus.

Our Semi-Final was vs. the Riverside Matrix.  A very athletic, big, good team. They had some really nice guards and this game would prove to be the most exciting of the tournament.  I was not there for the first couple minutes due to coming back from the 14u game but Coach Joe held down the fort giving us an 8-0 lead before I even sat down.  And I vividly remember the first thing he told "Clark is on FIRE!!"

Our man Clark scored our first 11 points and went off for 5 threes in the first half.  Clark set the tone for the whole game and his competitiveness and no fear attitude really feeds our team.  We played beautifully in the first half.  We executed against their zone, we trapped and pressed them but as you know, basketball is a game of runs and I knew our 24-12 halftime lead was not enough.  Riverside had an awesome comeback.  They got to the rim, they made free throws and made shots.  The second half was back and forth and with Riverside trying very hard to take Clark out of the game we needed our our guards to really step up...and they did!!

With us only up by 4 Jaden Casey came though in the clutch.  Jaden hit some HUGE jumpers from the right wing with just a couple minutes left to play.  His jumpers really gave us the cushion we needed to finish off the game and thats what Jack Abunassar did.  The 2 most important plays in the game were probably Jack's 2 huge rebounds in the closing minutes.  One of our "little" guys Jack played huge boxing out and grabbing 2 game winning boards.  And with only nursing a 2 point lead, Jack stepped up to the line for a one and one and knocked down both to secure the win.  Once again, a complete TEAM win to carry us into the Finals vs. AVAC Hoyas.

The Final game was really the culmination of everything we have been working on in practice and the games leading up.  Our chemistry, execution, and just fun for the game was really on display.  Our guys performed our "Switch" defense to a t.

Our press is really designed to wear on the opposing team.  We want to physically and mentally and emotionally break our opponents down to the point where they don't know what to do anymore and thats exactly what happened to AVAC.  AVAC had some major talent.  And with the score close for the first few minutes our defense just destroyed their will.  We caused turnovers and finished on fast breaks.  Everyone was balling.  Great passes. Great Shooting. Great everything.  And the guy who started this run was Isaiah Hogan.  He was everywhere on the court.  Steals, deflections, everything.  He scored inside and outside. Ran his lane. Really got us going in the Final and we never looked back.  We rushed out to 17 point halftime lead and extended even more in the second half.

Another huge impact player in the Final was also Zachary Songco.  Zach made good decisions vs. the Press and hit shots when he was open. Bryce Howard put the cherry on top of our tournament with his highlight "Rondo" move for a layup and our second straight championship.  The fans and our guys loved that one...We moved the ball vs. their zone. We broke their press with ease. We just played a great game.  We just played a great tournament.

The best part of this 11u team and tournament was that every single player stepped up at big moments and it was always someone different.  Our MVP and ALL-TOURNAMENTS was everyone.  I am so proud of our guys and even more excited about the next few months to really see where this team can go.

It was brought to my attention that our Kings 11u is now ranked #12 on the West Coast Club Basketball Rankings Website...Here's a link to the rankings

www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?cmenuid=1&url=guruwestcoastbasketballrankings2019&sid=496922931

I'm not a big believer in rankings and quite frankly don't like them, but I know you guys will enjoy seeing ALL your hard work PAYING OFF!!!

TOURNAMENT MVP: Ryan Cartaino, Clark Slajchert, Jaden Casey, Bryce Howard, Jack Abunassar, Trevor Howarth, Jonny Juzang, Isaiah Hogan, Zachary Songco

Derryck Thornton Has Great Showing at 16u Team USA Try-outs
D.T.

For all wondering who's that guy working out with me after our practices every Tuesday and Thursday night, it is Freshman point guard from Sierra Canyon Derryck Thornton.  Derryck was one of 16 freshman in the country invited to a mini-camp for Team USA 16u Developmental Team that will compete this Summer.

44 of the top players in the 2015 and 2016 graduate classes in the country were invited to the U.S. Olympic training facility in Colorado Springs, CO this past weekend and one time Kings player, Derryck, had a terrific weekend.  And although the final rosters will not be finalized until June, Derryck made a huge impression.  Many media outlets were impressed with Derryck's basketball IQ, true point guard ability, on-ball defense, and many scouts and coaches had Derryck as the best point guard at the camp regardless of year.

"There wasn't anybody any better at the point guard spot during the mini-camp. The six-footer has very good quickness, is a pass first guy and is very aggressive attacking the paint off the dribble. Thornton is also very good on the defensive side of the ball."

-Eric Bossi (Rivals.com)

"The search for a successor to Tyus Jones is

underway. USA Basketball needs a newpoint

guard and for those in attendance this camp

has turned into a proving ground of sorts. If

the team was looking for one guard to

advance his game on the final day, then they

saw an impressive effort out of Derryck

Thornton (Simi Valley, Calif./Sierra Canyon).

“I was nervous coming in,” Thornton said. “I

was too passive. I have to be more verbal

and play good defense.” Thornton

distinguished himself as a passer, playmaker

and reliable offensive player. He’s the type

of lead guard who could be the squad's pied

piper as others are likely to enjoy playing

with him. There are times when he over

dribbles, but this is a point guard who hasn’t

played a high school game and is hoping to

prove he belongs. Patience is the buzzword

with all the floor generals in attendance. On

Sunday, Thornton ramped up his play and

made a statement."

-Dave Telep (ESPN.com)

As soon as Derryck received the prestigious invite in August, Derryck and I have been working at 6:30AM on Tuesday/Thursday/Friday mornings and then coming back to Kings practice every Tuesday and Thursday night.  Hopefully, all the work pays off and come June, Derryck is one of the 12 members of Team USA.

Wednesday, November 12
Kings Basketball Academy Impresses in Fall Swoosh Classic

Facing the toughest competition thus far this season, both the 13u and 14u teams played extremely ...

Monday, December 15
13u's Sunday Comeback to Win Cavs Holiday Classic

Losing every game played in the tournament at halftime, the 13s displayed grit, determination, and the ultimate will to win taking home the championship trophy for the Cavs Holiday Classic Dec. 6th/7th. After the Saturday loss to the AVAC Hoyas, the Kings went into to Sunday knowing they would have to win 3 straight for the title. The first game versus Courtside Hoops was a precursor for the rest of the day. Another terrible slow start found the Kings down double digits early into the game. Going into the second half we needed a spark, somebody to show up and carry his team to victory and Matt Hauser stepped up. Matt continuley blew by his defender and knocked down jumper after jumper. He created for his own and teammates' shots. Matt was not alone in the comeback as All-Tournament Selection William Barrett stepped up knocking down crucial threes, and was a ball hawk all game. When the ferocious comeback was over, the kings moved on to the semis where they would meet the Valley Thunder.

The Valley Thunder game was very emotional for everyone involved as mostly all in the gym knew each other. Parents, players, and coaches were all intense from the start as once again the Kings fell behind by double digits. We were just missing shots, turning the ball over, and being out worked which extremely upset this coach. I'll just say that the Halftime speech had to be conducted outside. The Kings came back highly motivated cutting the 14 point halftime deficit to single digits very quickly. We finally took the lead late in the half, but the drama was just getting started. The last 5 mintues went back and forth as both teams got scores and stops when needed. The game was so tightly played that overtime was needed to determine the winner. Overtime is where big time players show up and once again Matt Hauser stepped up. Hitting the game tying and game leading shots to put the Kings up for good as somehow the Kings got to play in the finals versus the team that beat them on Saturday, the AVAC Hoyas.

Unlike the first 2 games of the day, the Kings came out very strong in the championship playing with intensity and high energy. AVAC did the same knocking down huge threes and making big shots as soon as the Kings would cut into the lead. AVAC had the lead at half and we were not even playing poorly. The second half continued to be the same back and forth battle as the first. The AVAC zone would slow the pace and both teams were not giving an inch. Once again Matt Hauser was keeping the Kings in the game knocking down huge shots down the stretch. He completely came into his own and carried us into the last 7 seconds into the game down 1 point, AVAC ball. With AVAC taking the ball out sideline, the Kings 5 defenders had the ultimate test of defensive denial, trust of one another, and complete focus on the task at hand. We needed a steal and score to win the game and none other than MVP Matt Hauser would deliver. Matt picked off an errant pass and dribbled down the left wing with time ticking away. Fellow guard Justin Rous was filling the right lane hard knowing Matt would give it up for the game winning lay-up. Matt dribbled to the hole going up and dropping the pass off for Justin win 2 seconds left. Justin rose up and made the lay-up plus the foul giving the Kings their first lead in the second half and maybe even the game with just 2 seconds left. Justin made the free throw and AVAC threw up a desperation shot from half court missing badly and giving the 13s the cahmpionship in exciting fashion. This was a very well deserved championship and the 13s should be extremely proud of the way they played. They truly showed everyone watching what it really means and takes to play for the Kings. They never gave up, they trusted one another, they trusted the system, and executed to perfection when their backs were against the walls. A great display of determination.

Kings Varsity: 28th Annual Mae Fisher Las Vegas Easter Classic Gold Division Champions

Even though this specific Mae Fisher Las Vegas Easter Classic may not have been the most organized, the competition was still top notch.  Our JV Kings went 1-2 beating the K-9 Dogs from Arizona and losing to 2 very powerful teams in the Arizona Premier (eventual Platinum Division finalist) and the nationally known Polynation from Las Vegas (eventual Gold Division Champion).  Although we came home a little beat up, the competition we faced will help us learn what it really takes to be a varsity basketball player and hopefully prepare our guys for the next level.

Our Kings Varsity had a much more successful Easter Classic going 5-1 and winning the Gold Division Championship in the process.  The team really came together throughout the whole tournament and peaked on the final day.

Our first game vs. the Pasadena Stars was a much needed tune-up for our guys.  A long drive, late night start, and some of our guys arriving late may have helped produce the sluggish start.  Charles Benton (Newbury park High School) really carried us throughout the game.  He displayed his full repetoire of moves with spin moves, jump-stop re-pivots, up fakes, transition, interior, post-up, and even brought his game out to the perimeter.  With the help of Tyler Mcgrath's  (Oaks Christian High School) timely shooting and scoring in the second half we went on 2 seperate runs of 12-0 and 10-0 to finally break away and win by 20.

Our second game vs. the Las Vegas Dynasty Elite was an absolute battle.  They were big, very talented, quick, and athletic.  We played much better in this game with our three guard lineup doing most of the damage.  Kevin Riewthong (Kennedy High School), Kyle Olandt (Moorpark JC), and Tyler Mcgrath really pushed the ball and set the pace early knocking down shots and getting to the hole.  Jared Koga (Newbury Park High School) did not miss a beat off the bench with great decision making (I'm pretty sure no turnovers all tournament long) and timely penetration for drop passes.  However, with really tight games with really good teams, the winner is usually decided by which teams does all the little things.  We missed our free-throws down the stretch, they made theirs. We turned the ball over down the stretch, they didn't.  We didn't box out, they did.  We didn't hit the big shots, they hit some big threes.  We saw our lead of 3-5 throughout the game disappear and lost 70-65 in our final pool play game.

Due to the loss we were placed in a must win game to advance to the bracket playoffs in the Gold Division.  We played Pure Hoops from the San Francisco/Bay Area at a horrible 9:40PM start time.  And let's just say we played like garbage.  We came out extremely flat.  We had no rhythm, no energy, and absolutely no sense of urgency.  Down 5 at the half we were in legitimate danger of going home.  We needed a leader to step up. We needed a veteran "King" to carry us and fight us through.  I was looking for one guy and I got two: Tyler Mcgrath and Steven Brodie (Oak Park High School).  Tyler had an array of offensive moves, threes, drives, floaters, pull-ups.  Tyler really did it all.  He scored in transition, he was our best rebounder, best defender.  He made free-throws.  This second half just solidified my belief in just how special of a player Tyler is and will be at the next level. Brodie did everything.  He scored in transition, he hit shots, got rebounds, steals and everytime he would turn the ball over he would hustle back on defense and take charge-every single time. Brodie gave us that energy and hustle we desperately needed. We escaped with a 9 point win and moved on to the quarter-finals in the Gold Division. I truly hoped this game plus some fun that night for our players would really bring them together.

To win the Gold Division championship, a team had to win 3 straight games in one day vs. nationally known teams such as Utah Pump n Run, LA RAGE,  and Marcus Banks Hard2Guard.  Our first game of the day matched us up against the Las Vegas Blue Devils.  And from the start, I had a good feeling we finally brought everything together.  Our big guys of Alec Hess (Westlake High School) and Charles Benton finally got a rhythm knocking down shots, scoring in transition, and rebounding with a purpose.  Our guards played free breaking defenders down and finishing at the hole. The Blue Devils had a very good squad.  Super quick. Could really shoot, but we just played well finally pulling away at the end of the game for a 7 point victory.  Our semi-final game had us playing vs. the CBC Magic.  They had a solid 6'10 big guy and guards that could really play.  The tone was set early in the game as Tyler Mcgrath and one of their better players received double techs.  After the first 5 minutes I knew we wanted to really give it to them.  This game was by far our best defensive game.  We closed out, we took charges, we rebounded, we blocked shots, we got steals, which all led to easy fast break baskets.  We really spread the floor offensively and our guard trio of Jared, Kevin, and Kyle got to the paint for easy layups and passes.  Our bench led by Patrick McBride, (Newbury Park High School) never let up the pressure offensively and defensively cruising to a 20 point blow-out victory.

The championship game was a tale of 2 games.  Marcus Banks Hard2Guards was a very talented team.  They were long, quick, could shoot, and basically had no weaknesses.  What we did have in our favor was about 30 minutes more rest time and the chance to watch them play twice.  We knew the key to having success in this game was by doing what we had been doing all day: ALL the little things. We came out quick.  Jumped on them from the start and were running on all cylinders.  We got every rebound, 50-50 balls. Pushed the ball hard and got wide open looks for lay-ups and threes.  15-4, 24-9, and eventually 39-20 nearing the end of the first half our team looked really good, BUT like most extremely talented teams, Hard2Guard made their run.  They had great penetrators and great one on one players.  They started to get to the paint with ease, drawing countless fouls or making layups.  If we helped they would hit the three. Our once comfortable lead was down to a very scary 12 at halftime.

The second half was an absolute dogfight.  It was very entertaining basketball, physical, smooth, and a lot of talent being displayed on the floor.  Charles Benton was taking charges. Tyler Mcgrath was getting to the line.  Hess was finishing. Kyle Olandt was shutting down number 3. This one guard in particular was really killing us.  Drawing fouls or scoring every time. Kyle did an excellent job quieting him in the second half limiting his oppurtunities and basically taking him out of the game.  Our lead was 2 or 3 for most of the second half and then with 3 minutes to go, Hard2Guard took the lead and fouled out Olandt in the process. Any other Kings team from the past or present would not be able to overcome that momentum.  We just gave up a 19 point lead in the championship game.  Normally, we would have let the game go and be satisfied with second place.  BUT this team fought back.  We ran our patented "23" pick n roll play down the stretch, first having Tyler hit Charles for a lay-up to bring us with-in one.  Kevin Riewthong hit a HUGE three from the corner to tie the game. Then a huge stop and another "23" play having this time Alec Hess hitting a huge three pointer from the right wing.  We locked up defensively, made our free-throws, and withstood a late scare for the 5 point championship victory.  The coordinator complimented on our team after the game, "very impressive team and program. Not too many teams can beat Hard2Guard...I love watching you guys play." This coach was extremely proud.

Gold Division MVP: Tyler Mcgrath

All-Tournament: Charles Benton

Kings 10u Win Kenny Smith AIM HIGH Summer Tournament Championship!!!

Our Kings 10u impressed many winning the championship of the Kenny Smith AIM HIGH Summer Tournament.  The tournament had a very competitive field that included AIM HIGH, San Pedro Knights, Playmakers, AVAC, and the very tough Tri-City Ballers.

Easily winning our Pool on Saturday, our 10u faced the Tri-City Ballers in the Semi-Final.  We jumped out early on them going up 18-7 with-in the first 7 minutes of the first half.  However, some Tri-City players arrived late including their best player and point guard.  As soon as the new players came, the momentum shifted and Tri-City slowly but surely chipped away at the lead and took the lead late in the second half.  Down 37-30 with a little over 5 minutes to go, our 10u mounted an awesome comeback.  We went into our trapping and "Switching" defense that caused many turnovers and we converted on many of them. Our frontcourt guards of Clark Slajchert, Jaden Casey, and Max Harris all did a subperb job harrassing the Tri-City guards and stealing many passes. Our big guys of Ryan Matlock, Sedrick Abrams, Beck Wallgard, and Mason Quandt did an excellent job finishing lay-ups and scores.

Back and forth the lead would go the last 3 minutes.  We would go up one, but then Tri-City would score.  Tri-City looked to pull away, but then we would get back to back buckets.  The atmosphere of the game was awesome as both teams' parents and spectators all were very emotional.  Up 1 with under a minute to go, we caused a turnover and immediately fast breaked down to the other end.  Clark led the break down the middle of the floor and gave a perfect pass to the streaking Jaden Casey on the left hand side for a lay-up plus the foul.  Huge play in the game.  Jaden made the free throw and we finished off the game strong. Kings win and would play in their first championship game since Palm Springs.

We all expected to play the very tough San Pedro Knights in the Finals, However they got upset by the Playmakers in the other semi-final.  The Playmakers did not stand a chance as our 10u cruised to a blowout championship.  Everyone contributed all tournament.  Max Harris shot the ball well from the outside and finished around the rim.  His speed and athleticism shined all tournament.  Mason Quandt rebounded the ball extremely well and was very aggressive offensively penetrating and finishing.  Our bigs of Ryan Matlock, Sedrick Abrams, and Beck Wallgard all finished around the rim with a very high percentage.  They all ran the floor extremely well and attacked the glass with aggression. All three were very impressive.  Our guards of Jaden Casey and Clark Slajchert played really well defensively.  Although they scored and made excellent passes all tournament, their defensive pressure on opposing guards, steals, and speed was really impressive to me.  Our team talked on defense, shared the ball so well, and just played so hard.  They really put it together this tournament and I am very proud of how they played.  Hopefully we can continue this success all Summer long!!!!

Tournament CO-MVP: Ryan Matlock and Clark Slajchert

All-Tournament Selections: Mason Quandt and Max Harris

Thursday, October 7
Swoosh Battle at the Dome RECAP

Our Kings program enjoyed a very nice trip up to the University of California Santa Barbara playing our way to three championships.

Although our 11s were under-manned all tournament long, this team definitely played the best out of our three teams. Our aggressive defense was on display all tournament long holding all of our opponents to under 20 points a game. We had very good ball pressure. We anticipated in the passing lanes. Our rotations were quick. And most importantly, our 11s are easily our best team at communicating defensively. Throughout the tournament, our tenacious defense led to our offense which led to 4 blowouts. On Saturday, our Kings beat the Moorpark Ravens and a team from Santa Barbara by pretty good margins.  One standout performer for Saturday was Cameron Olandt. He ran the point well limiting his turnovers, making very good decisions, and taking advantage of his scoring opportunities. Cam was a force all day Saturday and really played well.  In our second game, Daniel Foldes really got us started scoring our first 15 points dominating the paint. He made his layups. Hit his jumpers. And ran the floor like a guard. Daniel is quickly learning our system and has improved rapidly since our first tournament. Another standout was tournament MVP Steven Ball. Steven's skill level is very high. He can dribble, pass, shoot, and has a very high basketball IQ. He utilizes jab-steps, shot fakes, and is really hard to guard when he wants to be. He consistently scored in double figures all tournament long to go along with great defense and rebounding.

On Sunday, we played the Oxnard Fierce and really came ready to play. Our guard play of Brandon Smith, August Bynum, and Clark Slajchert was really on display. And I'm not just talking about offensively. Their defense on Sunday was just flat out awesome. Great ball pressure, many steals, and the best thing was how well they passed the ball. Our 11s as a group really share the ball very well and as a very high respected ref told me, "Boy do your guys know how to play the game." Our guards pushed the ball, Hit open shots, and finished on the break.

Our last game was an exhibition game vs. the Moorpark Ravens 13u team.  I obviously wanted the game to see how good our team could really be. When the game started, our 11s were a little intimidated. Moorpark scored on the first play with a post drop-step, and I almost thought this may have been a bad idea. After about 5 minutes of game time and the score close, our guys got confident. We pressed them hard and forced many turnovers. We started to box-out aggressively. We pushed the ball and hit open shots. We finished on the break. Everyone was playing well. One in particular was Sedrick Abrams. Sedrick is really really playing well. Hes making his lay-ups, hitting open shots, and may be our best free-throw shooter right now. He's one of our vocal leaders. And showed just how committed he is to our program by showing up just for one game, after his soccer game to play Saturday night.  When the half ended, our little 11s who were outsized and out-weighed were leading 29-7. And that's how to end a tournament. I am very proud of the 11s and extremely excited about the future of this group. Very excited!

All-Tournament Selections: Daniel Foldes and August Bynum

Tournament MVP: Steven Ball

Our 13s also took home first place beating the Moorpark Ravens, 3-Ball, Lakers Swoosh, and Hooptown in all convincing fashion.  Although at times our 13s played very well, there was also times when we did not. And that is something we must address for future tournaments. The one player who really shined all tournament long was Trevor Burtzloff. Wow, was he good. He was finally aggressive. He looked for his shot. He drove the lane. he finished at the rim. Trevor was an offensive force all tournament long. And to go along with his already fine defense, Trevor was a dominant basketball player this past weekend. I am so proud of how hard he has worked to get to this level.

Another player who has shown great improvement is Hudson Miller. His aggressive defense, his speed and quickness, and his great all-around game has really been on display this season. Although we were missing one of our better guards in Sam Orue, Hudson is filling in quite nicely. He is going to be counted on heavily this season and I am very confident he is up to the task.

Although we won our games by double digits, our last game vs Hooptown was intense. Hooptown is a solid program and well-coached, but we finally played well. Maybe because we had to run after our first game, but our 13s finally played the defense I was looking for. And played hard. Riley Battin stepped his game up and played to his talents. Austen Moye was everywhere. Rebounding, Finishing, and just being Austen. The bench play of Justin Stalberg, Jack Rosenthal, and Adam Bynum was also impressive.

And the point guard who put it together was Wes Slajchert. Wes is becoming a very very good point guard. He has a very high basketball IQ. He gets everyone involved. He executes and runs our sets. His decision making on when to shoot, pass, drive. He's pushing the ball more. He's a great defender. He's really leads our team and makes my job a little easier. Hopefully the 13s keep improving, add some more players, and football ends. Haha.

All Tournament Selections: Hudson Miller and Austen Moye

Tournament MVP: Trevor Burtzloff

Our 14s also had a very fine tournament taking home the championship. Our first game was vs. a Soph/Frosh team called 94 ft. And they were a very good team. They had size, they could shoot, they were faster and stronger and for 20 minutes, our 14s were right there with them.  We had an excellent first half. Austen Moye really kept us in the game. He made shots, finished lay-ups, and did not play intimidated. in the second half, our guard play was not as good. We became careless with the ball and were just out-physicaled on every aspect of the game. We ended up losing, but the game expereince was much more valuable than any win.

Our second game vs. the Moorpark Ravens 14s was a mismatch.  We really came out aggressive. After just playing a high school team, playing 14s was easy. We looked quick, aggressive, stronger. We pushed the ball and everyone played well. We shot the ball well, played smart, and looked good. Our third game was vs. another high school team from Pacifica. This time we were ready. We executed our press break and for some reason their defense decided to leave one guy open. Isaac Gilbert was awesome. Isaac finished with 30 points and 8 Three-pointers including 6 IN A ROW. Isaac's shooting in combination with Daniel and Isaac Ramirez's guard play really put the game away. Both guards did a much better job of handling the press and made good decisions. Another guard who has been playing really well is Tyler Banning. Tyler always had a very high basketball IQ and a great shot. But Tyler is now quicker, strong with the ball, and I am very very comfortable with him running the offense. Tyler's intangibles on the court are very valuable. Another much improved player is Myles Hudson-Bamberg. He's really getting smarter on the floor. He is still very aggressive, but now he's adding intelligence to his play limiting his fouls and bad shots and becoming a real force on the court. Our other bigs of Ryan Clem and Nicolas Hilde are also improving and played better as the tournament went along. With Ryan Hiepler getting healthy, and Marcus Chambers and Nicolas Capellas finishing up football. And also point guard Matt Huaser. Our 14s will be a force come Winter, Spring, and Summer heading into high school.

All-Tournament Selections: Myles Hudson-Bamberg

Tournament MVP: Isaac Gilbert

HIGH SCHOOL KINGS ROSTERS

ATTENTION: If you do not see your name on a roster, that means I do not have your information. And I assumed you did not want to participate.

Second, Rosters are not set in stone and depending on commitments and availability, we may only send one "Elite" team to tournaments.

Third, I have placed over 10 players on each team as you high school players are notoriously known to flake and not commit to tournaments. So although you may see many players on your roster, We will only be taking 8-9 players to a tournament.

I can not reiterate enough that you guys have to be committed to this program. Being Flaky, Showing up when you want WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.  We will remove you from our program immediately.

Players who are not on rosters are still invited to participate in our workouts during the Spring and Summer.

Thanks,

Adam

So Cal Unsigned Seniors Showcase-RECAP

Our newly formed Kings Unsigned Senior Squad Impressed many at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

We went 2-0 with wins over Step Up Sports and the highly respected BTI Senior team, our squad collectively played together, played smart, and most importantly played hard.  In our first game vs. Step-Up Sports, it took our team awhile to get our chemistry this being our first ever game together.  Lucky for us, we shot the ball extremely well early led by Derrick Hector (Chatsworth High School) who hit an array of shots early and Austin Cagley (Thousand Oaks High School). Both guards hit shots from deep and the mid range.  Our big guys of Gilles Dierickx (Chaminade High School) and Francois Tchoyi (Besant Hill) were huge all Sunday, but also had problems getting used to our system. We were feeling each other out and made some mistakes, but still led at halftime 39-35.  Our second half effort really picked up. Our third guard Brennan Walker (Westlake High School) played exceptionally well all Sunday and led our second half run with wing Dehsawn Hayes (Muir High School). The both connected on a spectacular lob alley-opp dunk that got everyone buzzing. Deshawn Might be the most athletic player I have ever coached. He had three to four dunks that were simply amazing.  Deshawn was aggressive on the break and with our chemistry building with every possession, we took a comanding lead and never looked back for the 71-62 win.

Our second game was against BTI who was led by Crespi Standout Matt Mounier and had very quick guards from Bonita and a solid bug guy from Harvard-Westlake.  Our guys took the challenge and came out motivated.  Our defense in the BTI game was intense. We closed gaps. We communicated. and We forced many turnover, bad shots that led to our fast break game.  Our lead guard play of Derrick, Brennan, and Austin was much better in our second game. They pushed the ball and found each other or our open wings for easy shots and lay-ups.  Angelo Jacobs (Westlake High School) and Chris White (Burbank High School) benefited with easy buckets.  And once again, Deshawn had some eye-pooping dunks and finishes.

Another reason why we jumped out to 39-22 lead in the first half was the shooting of Austin Cagley. Austin was on fire. He hit 5 threes, hit jumpers, and was unable to contain throughout the first half.  Our guys did a great job of finding him and Austin delivered.  We also established the paint much better in our second game. Francois and Gilles posted up stronger and when they got the ball they delivered by either getting fouled or finishing down low.  Their size, length, and power created problems for opposing teams all day long. Both blocked and altered many shots and their rebounding and outlets led to many easy baskets for our guards and wings.

BTI would make runs, but we would get timely lay-ups from Chris White or put backs from our big guys to lead all of the second half. Deshawn really frustrated Mounier all game long limiting him to really only free throws and a three pointer.  Once again, our lead guard play of Brennan Walker and Derrick Hector was also the difference. Both ran the team very well.  They put guys in the right position to score, made the correct pass and the correct time, and scored when they wanted.  Derrick, who is known for his big shot making, had some HUGE plays down the stretch. BTI cut our lead to 6 when Derrick went coast to coast for a unbelievable left hand finish plus the foul with under 3 minutes to go. He ran our pick and roll very well. And his defense on BTI's point guard was also top notch.  Brennan was under control all game long and had the coaches watching buzzing to me after the game.  All and all, everyone played very well for it being our first games together and I am definitely looking forward to our upcoming schedule of games.

A glorious weekend was capped off Sunday for the Kings, having all 3 teams participating in the ...

Monday, March 29
Kings 13s, 14s, and 15s all have solid showing at ACES Spring Showcase

Our program had a very nice weekend having our 13s finish a very respectable 1-2, our 15s taking third, and our 14s reaching the Championship Game.

Our 13s lossed to eventual champion of the tournament (Rising Stars) 54-43 in our first game.

Our second game of the day was versus the very talented GameTymers. They are very well-coached and have a similar philosphy as us.  The game was a instant classic. Both teams traded leads back and forth throughout the game. Down 2 in regualtion with a little over 30 seconds to play we called timeout to set up the go ahead play. We called for a double staggered away for New King Ryan Hiepler. Our point guard Andre Chevalier passed the ball to the left wing to Tyler Cartaino and both him and Austen Moye set perfect screens for Ryan who came off free to knock down the go ahead three to put us up 1. Gametymers came down the floor very quickly for one more desperation shot and got bailed out by the refs, who called a shooting foul with only 4 seconds left to play. Gametymers knocked down the first free-throw but missed the second giving us a chance for the win, if we got the rebound, which we did not. Gametymers inbounded the ball and passed it into the paint for a game-winning lay-up. As the player went up the whistle blew and the ref called another horrible bail-out as time expired. Not wanting to end such a great game with free-throws the refs huddled up and agreed that the foul occured after time expired giving this game overtime.

Switching off baskets in overtime we had the ball to win the game with time running out.  Andre Chevalier dribbled out the clock waiting to make his move. Andre dribbled left off a high pick n roll off Austen Moye for a good look at a three at the buzzer...Shot rimmed out and we were headed to double overtime.  With only one minute given for double overtime I knew first possesion would very important.  We won the jump ball and hurried down the court, Ryan Hiepler had a chance to take the lead but missed a tough fall-away layup giving the GameTymers the ball with only 30 seconds left. The GameTymers attacked the rim hard and once again got a call with only 11 seconds left to play. After thier player made the first free throw, we called timeout to set-up a winning play. The second free-throw rimmed out and Andre got the rebound and dribbled up the floor. Three guys collapsed on Andre at half court. Andre gave a very alert and nice pass to a open Tyler Cartaino for a game winning three pointer on the left wing. Tyler's Three was in n out, but Ryan Hiepler did not give up on the play getting the offensive rebound taking one dribble and fading to his right hit a unbelievable bank shot at the buzzer to win the game by 1. After a brief discussion at the table to see if the basket was good, one of the refs said he was watching the clock the whole time, BASKET GOOD.

On Sunday, we lossed to TarHeel Nation but once again competed very hard losing by double digits. We have a lot to work, but our 13s faced the toughest competiton in the tournament and responded the way I wanted. I was very proud of their performance.

13u ALL-TOURNAMENT: Ryan Hiepler

Our 14s had an awesome tournament rolling over competition on Saturday beating the HAX Elite team by double digits and the host team, ACES by over 20. Everyone contributed and played well.  On Sunday, we played the very talented San Diego All-Stars on the main court for the right to play in the championship game. We executed beautifully breaking their press and their zone.  We led pretty much the whole game, shooting the ball very well, and moving it with crisp quick passes.  Aleksandr Abrams led the way with great offensive rebounding and solid interior defense. He was dominant all tournament on the boards and has improved vastly defensively. I have a rule of not checking the scores book and KIGNS DONT WORRY ABOUT STATS, but Aleksandr may have honestly averaged a 20 and 10 all tournament long.  Our wings of Brendan Bleier, Ryan Hiepler, Jordan Flannery and Andre Chevalier knocked down some big threes and our point guard Justin Rous ran the team beautifully. And as always, our x-factor for every game played awesome, Clark Nelson.  Clark can really do it all and is our most versatile player. he finished at the rim, made beautiful passes off penetration, and guarded their best player very well.  Our guard play was the key as Brendan and Tyler Cartaino did a very good job helping out Justin to break their pressure.

Having a lay-off of 5 hours until the championship game may have hurt, but the San Diego All Stars took it to us in the championship game beating us by 60-41.  We missed a lot of free throws early and a lot of lay-ups which really hurt our chances to stay in the game.  The same threes we were knocking down earlier in the tournament did not fall.  We played hard, and we played well, but just not well enough to win the game.  I was very proud of the 14s in this tournament and feel like they are finally getting over the hump and becoming ready for high school basketball.

14u ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Aleksandr Abrams and Jordan Flannery

Our 15u team played very well in only their second tournament together.  Only playing with 6 guys all tournament, our guys executed magnificantly and looked like a team that has been playing together for years. Everyone contributed and everyone had a solid tournament. Our stand out performer was Tanner Payan.  he was dominant all tournament long. He rebounded, blocked shots, scored in the paint, from three, mid-range, everything.  His game is improving everytime he steps out on the floor and his confidence in his game is matching his talent.  Another player with a very solid tournament was Aaron Simon-Lacombe.  One of our more athletic players, Aaron played very well. An underrated talent, his skills this weekend were not overlooked. he finished out on the break, shot the ball well, and played bigger than his frame. Our guard play of Anson Moye and JD Slajchert was also solid. They both can shoot, drive, and really compliment each other out on the floor. Brandon Flannery also had a nice tournament.  One of our better rebounders Brandon's defense and effort is always top notch.  He also showed confidence in his jumper this weekend which is something he will keep having to improve to polish out his game. Sumedh is a great prescence on the court.  Always works hard and is gaining confidence in his game every time he plays.  His addition and hopefully the addition of Bret, Kamana, and Jackson Miller in Las Vegas will make our 15s very competitive.

15u ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Tannner Payan

Thank you parents for driving up and all your effort.

Kings 13u Qualifies for California State Games in San Diego with Second Place Finish in 14u Division

Our Kings 13u team had a very impressive run at the California State Games Qualifier held at Canyon High School over the weekend of April 10th and 11th.  Playing up in the 14u Division, the 13u defeated the Panthers, Impact Select, and Last Run before losing to the San Pedro Knights in the Finals.

The first game vs the Panthers was a classic. The game was back and forth, but the Panthers took a 12 point lead mid-way through the second half and things did not look bright for the Kings.  Switching to our 13 defense, our Kings stormed back forcing tunrovers and converting.  The comeback only gave the Panthers a 2 point lead heading into the final minute of the game.  Down 43-41, our new go-to guy and maybe our most clutch performer, Ryan Hiepler took and made a huge three from the left wing with only 17 seconds remaining.  With the score 44-43, the Panthers called timeout to set up the winning play. Running a pick n roll they got the mismatch they wanted having our new King Nicolas Cappella matched up with one of their smaller quicker guards.  Nicolas played solid D, but the guard made a very difficult floater with only 9 seconds left to take the lead 45-44. Not having anymore timeouts, Tyler Cartaino pushed the ball up the floor quickly drawing 2 defenders and passing the ball to Nicolas on the left baseline.  Determined to make up for his man scoring, Nicolas took a 15 footer at the buzzer which rimmed out and then back in again giving our Kings the very exciting 46-45 victory.  All Kings members produced but new King Matt Bengtsson and veteran Myles Hudson-Bamberg were huge contributors in the second half.

Our second game vs. Impact was a lot less dramatic with a 56-46 victory and the score was a lot closer than how the game played out.  Our pressure defense and aggressive offense built our lead to 22 during the game and we withstood one last comeback attempt by Impact.

The semi-final game vs. Last Run was a very good test for our 13s. Formerly known as the Jaguars, they came ready to play and did not want to lose to a younger team.  Their point guard was very talented taking and making many three-pointers and drawing many fouls on our guys.  He must have shot at least 12-15 free throws alone.  This game was back and forth the whole time.  Both teams exchanged leads, players got heated, and the pressure was felt by everyone in the gym.  Down one with a little over a minute to play, we called timeout to set up a play for none other than Ryan Hiepler. Last Run was in a zone the whole game so I had Ryan run the baseline using a double screen from Austen Moye and Nicolas Capella to come free.  Kyle Johnson passed the ball on time and on target and Ryan did the rest hitting the baseline corner three to put us in the lead for good. Kings ended up winning 54-51 and headed to the finals.

The San Pedro Knights ran through the competition all tournament long and it did not change vs. us in the Finals. They came out ready to play and we didn't.  We looked soft, scared, and we played with fear.  Their pressure defense really took us out of the game early and the Knights never looked back.  Even our 14s would have had to battle to beat them.  They were a very good team.  It is never good losing by 20 in the finals, but I am very proud of our 13s. They competed the whole game and showed why they are one of the best 13u around.  Playing without some of our starters, the 13s are deep and very talented.  Everyone can play and I look forward to what this team does in the future.

All-Tournament Team: Ryan Hiepler and Tyler Cartaino

Kings Basketball Academy Impresses Many at 13th Annual Ventura Seaside Tournament

Our 13s (White), 14s, and Kings JV all brought home the Championship Hardware for the 13th Annual Ventura Seaside Tournament over April 23rd, 24th, and 25th.

Our 10u finished second losing to the Ventura Heat in the championship 39-38 in a very hard fought game.  Although I was not able to coach, I know our boys played extremely hard and left everything they had on the court.  The boys cruised through the bracket beating Santa Paula Elite 54-22 and taking care of the Camarillo Dons by 20 plus.  Both games were dominated by our pressure defense.  We executed our switching D, and fronting the post to near perfection.  All players contributed offensively and we headed into the championship with confidence.  In the Final, we started off very poorly from the tip-off. A score by the Heat and back to back turnovers had us start the game in a 7-0 hole.  After a timeout, we composed ourselves and fought back making the Final a very exciting game.  The Heat capitilized on our 10s biggest weakness which is turnovers.  They pressured us into making many mistakes and turnovers will always allow teams to stay in the game.  Down 1 with a little over 30 seconds to play, Max Harris hit a huge three to put us up 2.  All we needed to do was get a stop, rebound, and take care of the ball for a much deserved championship.  We got the stop, but our outlet pass went out of bounds. The Heat crashed the boards hard on their next possesion and tied the game with a put back lay-up with 11 seconds to go.  We ran our 1-4 press attack and got the ball in, but we once again turned the ball over down the sideline.  The Heat called timeout with 6 seconds left.  The Heat drove hard and may have gotten bailed out with the ref putting the game in his hands calling a foul on us with 2 seconds left.  The Heat made their first, missed the second and our chances at a championship was finished.

I'm very proud of the 10u boys for fighting so hard, but we have to understand that in order to win games, WE MUST TAKE CARE OF THE BALL.  We must value every possession, and we must be able to handle pressure.  Hopefully we will keep on improving in those areas up in Palm Springs vs. a very competitive field.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM SELECTIONS: Ryan Cartaino, Clark Slajchert, and Sedrick Abrams.

Our 13s White, comprised of a mix of 12s and 13s got to the Finals by crushing the Carpenteria Indians by 35 and by beating Team Action 30-24.  I was also not present for the 13s championship game, but heard we had a very very very sluggish first half.  Down 10-6, Coach Evan got into the boys at halftime and we came out with a much more sense of urgency.  It may have not been the prettiest of games, but the 13s pulled off the championship beating the Simi Valley Vikings by 9.  Tournament MVP, Austen Moye was dominant and drew praise from coaches, refs, and other players alike.  Austen has one of the greatest attitudes I have ever coached.  He's a natural leader and really stepped his game all tournament long.  The 13s white is already a really solid team and will only get better as we will have more additions later on this month.  They performed better than the 13s Black squad making our 13u teams and players highly competitive.

TOURNAMENT MVP: Austen Moye

ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS: Matthew Matlock and Nathaniel Smith

Our 13s Black squad came into the tournament with very high expectations.  They were the talk of the tourney with our new additions and finally having our full squad for a tournament, I was very eager to see how we would play.  Maybe having too many players on the first night, our first game together as a unit, and playing vs. a team that has played together for a long time could be some reasons why we lost our first game of the tourney 41-40 to the Santa Barbara Islanders, BUT those are just very POOR excuses.  Our defense was very suspect as we did not communicarte on hand-offs, curl screens, and we fouled enitrely way too much.  Bad reffing is also an excuse I do not like using as the way our program plays, we should not have to blame anyone but ourselves.  The Islanders were ready to play, hit huge threes, made all their free-throws, and broke our press with ease.  Their guard play was excellent, they out-hussled us to rebounds, and their zone took our offense out of rhythm.  One positive of our game was the play of Marcus Chambers.  He singlehandedly kept us in the game with timely shots and was the only player who played with composure, aggression, and played very well.  With everything working against us, only losing by 1 with some very questionable calls down the stretch is nothing to be ashamed about, but we all knew that this talent could show better.

Our second game was vs. the Valley Thunder, and I don't have to get into the rivalry between us, but lets just say that we do NOT appreciate losing to them.  Our "Switch" defense really got to the Thunder and our pressure took their players out of the game.  Andre Chevalier played very good defense on their best player all game, getting into his head and single-handedly taking him out of the game mentally. The player was extremely talented and played very well and that match-up was very nice to see.  Our guys all stepped up from the night before.  Ryan Hiepler attacked the rim, Matt Bengtsson played with his typical intensity, and former Thunder member, Myles Hudson-Bamberg came through in the second half.  He rebounded hard, hit a crucial jumper, and made his free throws making this win even sweeter for him. Veteran Kings Tyler Cartaino and Dante Difronzo also contributed heavily.  Dante's basketball IQ and defense may be the best on the team while Tyler was finally aggressive and active offensively.  Kyle Johnson always has positive minutes and plays extremely hard while new King Isaac Gilbert had one of his best games defensively as a King.

In the third place game, we played the SCV Lightning.  I left the game with us nursing a 13 point lead, but the first half was very hard fought.  Nicolas Capella came alive dominating the paint aas he should rebounding and finishing around the rim.  Our wing play of Cartaino, Chevalier, Chambers all picked up in teh second half while the bench produced.  Isaac Gilbert hit some huge big momentum threes.  Bengtsson and Hiepler also shot the ball very well, and we executed our zone offense very well.  We got better every game in this tournament and the more experience we have together, the better.  This is one of our more talented teams, and is up there with our High School Kings from 2 years ago, and our 14s from last year as one of the more talented teams the Kings has ever had.  I look forward to Palm Springs and see how we can compete there.

ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTION: Marcus Chambers

Kings 14u and Kings JV Win the 13th Annual Ventura Seaside Tournament

Our 14u Team played fast, strong, and hard all tournament long.  We played with something to prove and it was one of our better performances all year.  I can not express how proud I am of these boys and the way they played Kings Basketball all weekend long.

In our first game vs. the Ventura Breakers, we jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back.  Jordan Flannery was aggressive early displaying an array of moves consisting of floaters, one dribble pull-ups, and his usual three point accuracy.  He was an offensive force all game.  Our "Switching" Defense really smotherd the breakers early as our guards were flying all over the court.  Justin Rous once again tallied many many steals and assists pushing the ball on every opportunity and attacking the paint hard.  Our post play of Aleksandr Abrams was also very nice to see.  Aleksandr showed off his skills on the block finishing on many of his post moves.  Everyone contributed and everyone played well for a huge 25 point plus victory, but we ALL looked forward to Sunday's games vs. Baseline to Baseline and our bitter rival, the Valley Thunder.

In our first game Sunday vs. Baseline, we came out somewhat sluggish. Maybe it was the nerves playing vs. a former player, or maybe we just were being our usual incosistent selves, but we fouled a bit too much and didnt come out as strong as I wanted to.  That being said, we were still up double digits heading into the second half.  We started off the second half strong and never looked back.  New King, Duncan Miller really had an excellent game. He controlled tempo, made correct passes to the correct players, and did not have a turnover all game.  He ran the team with confidence and was very impressive.  We ended up wining by close to 30 points and proved a point in the process.  A very nice win for our program.

In the Championship Game, we played our familar foe, the Valley Thunder.  They beat us the last time we played at Crespi High School and really embarrassed us in the process.  They play very solid man to man defense and also have a former King as a player.  Our boys were very pumped up for the game and wanted payback.  However, we once again came out sluggish. Down 10-2 early Jordan Flannery hit a huge corner three to calm our nerves a little and really settled us in the game.  And what a game it was.  It was not our best offensive game by any means, but our defense was very strong.  We closed hard, rebounded very well, and our man to man defense was the best i've seen from this group in a long time.  Our defense really kept us in the game as did the play of Brendan Bleier.  Brendan really had a stand out game.  He attacked the rim, made great decisions and rebounded very well.  he played with confidence and everyone else followed suit.  Although we missed many free throws and lay-ups we went into halftime with a 17-15 lead.  The second half was more of the same.  Both teams would make runs only to have the other team come back.  It was back and forth.  Huge threes would be countered.  Both teams wanted this one bad.

Heading into crunch time we nursed a very slim 1 point lead with 1:29 to go.  We went into a spread delay game trying to force the Thunder into fouling while running out the clock.  We did a pretty good job until about 40 seconds to play we turned the ball over.  The Thunder drove hard and got fouled making one of two free-throws and eventually sending the game into overtime.  In the overtime we designed a play to have Tyler Cartaino fake a hand-off to Jordan and drive it which worked but the finish, Tyler anticiapted contact but never got it.  The Thunder came down and missed but got a huge offensive rebound put back and one to put them up three.  That play kind of punched us in the stomach and most kids and teams would notbe able to fight through that adversity.  On our next possession, Justin Rous got us into our new "Memphis" Set and we countered exactly the way I drew it up.  They doubled Brendan right off the hand-off and Brendan snapped the pass right back to Justin on the right wing.  As Justin drove, Aleksandr Dove as he was told and made a very difficult lay-up off a great pass from Justin to cut the lead down to one with 1:40 to go.  The Thunder got the ball in their "Best" player's hands, and decided to go iso one four flat vs. Aleksandr.  As the player drove to pull, Aleksandr read the play and easily blocked his jump shot, Brendan raced to the loose ball, picked it up and led the 2 on 1 break with Aleksandr.  Brendan threw a pin point bounce on the money to a streaking Aleksandr for a lay-up and giving the Kings the lead by one point, Timeout Thunder.  It was maybe one of the greatest Kings sequences I have seen in a long time and won't soon forget.  We turned up the defense forcing a horrible shot and once again, Brendan Bleier got the rebound and fouled with under 50 seconds to play.  Only up one, Brendan went up to the line a calmly made both free-throws putting us up three.  We got another stop and Justin Rous put the game away with his free throws giving the Kings the 5 point championship.  I was so proud of the boys and I can't wait for Palm Springs.  They played quick, fast, and with intensity I have not seen since the start of the year.  Time is running out on the 14s and hopefully they take advantage of being a King every time we hit the floor.

TOURNAMENT MVP: Justin Rous

ALL TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS: Aleksandr Abrams and Brendan Bleier

Our Kings JV was the talk of the tournament with our style of play and our very talented group of guys.  I can not state how many refs, coaches, and opposing players came up to me to tell me how well we played this weekend.

Our first game vs. the very solid group NOC Stars out of Orange County was tough.  We built a double digit lead only to see it disappear in the waning minutes.  We ended up winning 37-33, but the game was physical and fast.  It was great competition to open up the tournament.  Our defense was extremely impressive.  We held them to only 7 points at halftime and our speed and pressure were the talk of the game.  One highly respected ref who has done CIF games, State Playoffs Games, commented on our play, "I have not seen any team in the last 2 years play as hard, as fast, and with such quickness on the defensive end than your team. Your whole program plays phenominal defense, but your High School group was the best I have seen in years."  I was obviously extremely proud and that was easily the greatest compliment I have ever received.

Our second game was vs. the Thousand Oaks Knights and we started out fast jumping out to a 10-0 lead.  We led the whole game, but T.O. battled us throughout the game.  It was a different feel than most AAU games as T.O. plays dicipline and methodical, but their different style did not bother us as we won 46-36.

We played the Camarillo Aces in the Finals and played our most complete and best game dominating the Aces 51-35.  All our guys contributed throughout the Tournament but the one player who really stood out was Jason Ghilarducci.  He was easily the best player in the entire tournament.  I'm talking all divisions.  Every coach, ref, and opposing players all noticed Jason and his play throughout the tournament.  Super athletic and quick the thing that seperates Jason is that he works as hard on defense than when he plays offense which is very rare to find in a player.  His ball pressure, steals, rebounding was all top notch and his finishes around the basket received many ohhhs and ahhhs from the crowd.

Our guard play of JD Slajchert and Anson Moye was solid all tournament.  They are very complimentary to each other and love to push the ball.  Both guards are very unselfish, but can score with the best of them.  Our wing play of Aaron Simon-Lacombe and Michael Roletti was both very solid.  They both can shoot, are athletic, and both can handle the ball.  Our bigs of Jackson Miller and Tanner Payan was also great.  Jackson is an awesome basketball player.  He works extremely hard and is very talented.  You can't coach effort and that what Jackson brings every time he steps on the floor.  I was extremely impressed with Jackson.  Tanner had another great tournament.  He's a gurad in a big man's body.  He's super unselfish, can shoot, great basketball IQ. Hard working and has improved in all areas.  Our new guard Joseph kim was also solid.  As soon as he gets comfortable in our system, Im sure this team will take off even further.  I look forward to great things with solid bunch of guys.
