NEW CONCUSSION STANDARDS FOR COACHES (ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS/PLAYERS PLEASE READ)
The state of Massachusetts and the MIAA are now requiring that all high school coaches must participate in a concussion course that will better educate them about the issues related to concussions.
Here is the basics of what you (as the parent/guardian) need to know:
1. all of the collision and contact sport athletes will be pre-tested through the IMPACT computer concussion testing program;
2. at the first indication of a suspected concussion an athlete will be referred to the athletic trainer and the parent will be notified that day/night;
3. a retest of the athlete will occur and a comparison with the base line test will give the trainer information to inform the athlete as to what path to follow to return to play;
4. Once the athlete is symptom free for 7 days the athlete can return to:
a. light exercise w/o equipment (no weight lifting)
b. running w/o equipment
c. non contact drills
d. full contact drills
e. game play
5. this progression is at a minimum of a day each
6. parents will be informed of this progression
