GENERAL DESCRIPTION, EXPLANATION OF OUR WEEK-LONG MAMMOTH CAMP

Since the summer of 2000, the boys and girls cross country teams have held a week-long training camp during August in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Mammoth has become a Mecca of sorts for runners, and numerous Southern California teams make the trek north to run the fire roads and trails of the mountain community.

The purpose of the camp is two-fold: First, we go there to get away from the daily routine of running in Riverside, and use the environment up there to train hard and rigorously! There is no better way to describe it than to say that the running we do in Mammoth is difficult. We train twice a day, the elevation is at 7,700' and higher, the hills are steep and long. The length of each run varies between 5 and 12 miles, but on average the runs last for about an hour. The second purpose of Mammoth is to work on creating a bond between team members. Each year, the week is centered around a theme that will be woven through the team activities, the nightly clinics (given by the coaching staff and guest speakers from other teams), literature to read and so forth. The week is designed to bring the team together in knowledge and understanding of the sport of each other.

Participation in the camp is by invitation only. Athletes must demonstrate an above average level of physical fitness and skill. Due to the nature of the runs done in Mammoth, safety concerns keep slower runners from invitation, as monitoring each athlete on each run is of utmost importance. Likewise, the demands of running at high altitude also demand a selective process.

Living and eating arrangements for the week (7 runners in a chaperoned condominium) make it necessary that those who are invited have demonstrated positive attitudes towards their teammates and the coaches and can be trusted to remain agreeable, cooperative and pleasant in crowded and sometimes stressful situations.

The cost of Mammoth is determined yearly on a "break-even" objective. Other than fast-food stops on the way up and back, all other costs of the week are covered in the fee. In all, the week is a great one, and we have yet to come home having not met our goals for the seven days.

Invitations will be extended around the 1st of August. The coaches look at the following criteria in determing invitations:
1) High fitness level from the first day of summer practice.
2) Participation in the track season, showing a commitment to year-long development.
3) A positive attitude. A negative attitude toward the coaches, team members or toward running in general will disqualify an athlete from invitation. Guaranteed!
4) A coachable spirit
5) Ability to adequately complete longer runs
6) Strong effort - if you sacrifice your own ability to jog with friends, you probably won't be invited
7) Attendance and promptness at summer practice.
8) Relative ability when compared to teammates.
The trip is not limited to varsity runners, nor is it promised to varsity runners.  9th graders and rookies are judged on a less-rigorous criteria.  The camp is designed to bond together and train those athletes focused on competing at a higher level.
