After 26 years at Kickapoo High
School, and over 40 years in
coaching Roy Green will retire after the
08-09 school year.
Roy Green played high school basketball
for the Camdenton High School
Lakers. Then he continued his playing
career at Missouri State University
under head coach Bill Thomas.
He served as head coach at Miller for two years
and Willow Springs for one season.
He was drafted into the Army and spent two
years in Vietnam. He returned to
Springfield and took over the freshman
coaching duties at Glendale High School.
His brother had played for Glendale
head coach Jack Roberts when he was the head
mentor at Camdenton.
Roy won many freshman city championships
at Glendale and became the junior varsity
coach in 1978. A year earlier('77'-78), he was
the acting head coach for Glendale after
Jack Roberts fell from a ladder while
hanging a banner welcoming teams to the
Glendale Holiday tournament.
Coach Green led Glendale to the Class 4-A
Quarterfinals, beating Raytown South (45-43) in the
sectional contest and losing by eight to DeSmet
in the quarterfinals. He left Glendale with a 53-7
record as the junior varsity coach.
Roy Green became the third coach in Kickapoo
history coming into the '83-'84 season,
which ended with a 9-18 losing record.
Well, that would be the last losing record
for the Kickapoo boys basketball
program!
Since that first losing season, Kickapoo has won 12
Ozark conference titles, 16 District/Regional
titles, 2 State Championships ('03 & '06),
and the 2005 Bass Pro Shops Tournament
of Champions!
The Chiefs were able to capture the
2003 Missouri Class 5 State
title and attain a national ranking of 6th
in America at the end of that season!
During the '03-'06 seasons, Kickapoo
defeated Tyler Hansbrough and the Poplar
Bluff Mules twice!
His '06-'07 squad lost its first game of the year,
but won 26 consecutive after that opening setback.
Coach Green has been on the bench for
every single Glendale-Kickapoo varsity
contest. When he got the Kickapoo job, the Chiefs
had only defeated Glendale three times in history.
Now, Kickapoo is only three behind Glendale
in the all-time series. In fact, Coach
Green was the acting head coach at Glendale
when Kickapoo beat the Falcons for the
first time in 1977-78.
We wish Coach Green the best in retirement here at
KickapooBasketball.com!
