Royals Don't Go Down Without a Fight...
2006-Final
Well, the Royals faced off against the one team they have been unable to figure out in the MVABL finale, the Woodpeckers. With only 1 win against the Wood over the last 4 years they Boys in Blue hoped this would finally be their year. They entered game one with rookie and MVABL league leader in strikeouts, Nick Biron, on the mound, but the short porch and Power-vs-Power matchup backfired on the Royals. The Royals knew game one was going to be a long one when Brad T. capped off the first inning with a 308 grand salami. Biron threw everything he could at the Woodpeckers, but the offense went silent against Krafty Klaus and didn't provide him any help. The Boys in Blue were blanked 12-0 in game 1.

Game 2 proved to be more of a barn-burner as Royal Veteran Jason Griffith took the mound in the pivotal game. The Woodpeckers scored first in the bottom of the first off a RBI sacrifice. The Boys in Blue kept knocking on the door in game 2, but were unable to plate that crucial first run. In the 2nd and 4th inning the Royals managed to grind out a runner 90 feet from the plate, but were just couldn't muster that much needed 2 out hit to plate the runner. The Woodpeckers would cash in with a few runs in the bottom of the 5th, plating 2 to take a 3-0 lead. However in the top of the 6th the Royals would final get on the scoreboard... A single off the bat of Matt Haver plated Brian Duffy with the Royals first run of the game and World Series. From there the dam cracked a bit for the Boys in Blue as Griffith reached base with a single of his own and with 2 on and 2 outs Ben Ailes connected with his first home run of the season, which couldn't have come at a better time. The Royals took a 4-3 lead in this pivotal winner-take-all game. In the bottom of the 6th Griffith handled Woodpecker hitters to preserved the lead. In the top of the 7th, the Royals threatened again to plate a few runs, but tough defense from the Woodpeckers turned a crucial 6-4-3 to end the inning and Royals threat. From there the Woodpeckers cashed in on the Royals, a mis-placed ball in the field allowed the tieing run to reach base and later score on a fielders choice. However that run was a mute point as the Royals were unable to score again in the 8th and 9th, and the Woodpeckers capped off the game and the season with a walk-off 2-run homerun to take home a 4th title for Woody's boys in a 6-4 victory.

Both teams played their best in this classic series. Those in attendance for both games will truly remember the see-saw battle of that exciting second game... Those who missed out or had to *leave* :( will have to live through the stories of those that lived the game!! :) Great day for both teams, for the Boys in Blue, it was an exciting run. Enjoy the off-season and we'll give it a run again next year.

Thanks everyone for your support and contribution to the team this season,
The Skipper

Official 2006 Water Bottle Count
The results are in!! :) I had to look through the books to dig up the count, but I knew it was something people are always curious about so I did a little research to see what I could find. Now the results are a little skewed because we didn't actually have the bottles to distribute at our last 3 games, so I just added those games to the person that actually still had the bottles!! Now onto the results:

Ben Ailes 1
Nick Biron 1
Chad Campbell 2
TJ Dean 5
Brian Duffy 1
Mark Franklin 1
Jason Griffith 2
Ryan Hall 3
Matt Haver 2

Royals Reach Playoff Finals...
SI Royals Cover
For the first time in MVABL Royals history, the Boys in Blue have made it to the big dance where they look to repeat the same performance the BIG club had 21 years ago!!

The Royals took the field yesterday in their Quarterfinal game against the Kettering Outlaws, a team that ended their 2005 season in the playoffs. Rookie Brian Duffy got the nod from the Skipper for the start. Battling hay fever and Outlaw batters, Duffy went 4 strong innings, only allowing 4 runs to pickup the win. At the plate the Boys in Blue would send 50 batters to the plate knocking out 25 hits on the day. Up 7-4 when Duffy left the game, southpaw junk-baller Dan Losito took the hill in relief. Dan gave the team 3 strong innings recording 5 K's in his appearance on the hill. Former Bronson Arroyo look-alike Andrew "OD" O'Donnell came in to close out the day. OD worked 2 scoreless innings as the team played solid defense behind each of the 3 hurlers on the day.

Game 2 on the day for the Royals pitted them against the Attack Mules, fresh off their surprising upset victory over the Ohio Woodpeckers. Rookie Nick Biron got the start for the Royals in game 2, and the Attack Mules were able to pickup 4 runs over the first 3 innings on some solid hitting. As Biron entered the dugout in the middle of the third down 4-0 he looked to his team for some support, and they would answer his plea. The Royals would send 12 batters to the plate and score 6 runs off 7 hits, 2 HBP, and 1 SAC. Up 6-4 Biron worked quickly through the top of the fourth inning to get the Royals back to the plate where the Boys in Blue picked it right back up where they left off. The Royals were able to score a pair of insurance runs off Franklin and Griffith knocks. From there the offense on both sides would be blanked for the rest of the game. As each team would threaten, defense and pitching would prevail. For the Royals Biron would go 6 strong innings only allowing the 4 runs (2 ER) and fanning 13 before he would hand the ball off to veteran Jason Griffith. Griffith took the ball from Biron and continued to roll only allowing 1 hit over the final 3 innings and recording 4 K's himself.

On the day the Royals played well as a team in the field and at the plate, and their reward is their first trip to the MVABL World Series finale on September 24th where they will face off against either the Outlaws, Woodpeckers, or Attack Mules. Mark your calendars now to attend this league finale as I'm sure it will be a day filled with great baseball by all clubs.

New Royal Joins the Farm Team
baby luke
To all the Royals players, friends, and families:

Baby Luke was born Tuesday at 2:52 PM, and was a stout 8 pounds 15 ounces!! Mom and baby are doing great. And also what perfect timing it was!! This time Dad didn't have to catch grief from all the ladies in the stands for making a baseball game I probably shouldn't have attended... :D

Update, we have been home for a few days now and everyone still feeling good. Luke has his days and night mixed up, but that is to be expected for awhile. Big Brother Eric and Big Sister Haley are both huge helps around the house. Hopefully Luke will make it out to the field for a little bit before we are all done, but if not I'm sure he'll be out hooting and howling at the team party.

See you all at the field,
The Skipper

Royals Clinch Playoff Seed
fourteen
The Royals took the field Sunday night with a lot of things riding on the game. A win would keep the Royals win streak alive, add to the clubs best record in 6 years, and most importantly the Number 2 seed in the 2006 playoffs. A loss would mean a whole bunch of stuff not yet calculated... :) The Royals faced off against the tough, National Division 2nd place Attack Mules. The game lived up to all the anticipation. The Royals were able to outlast the Attack Mules on the night to pickup the 14-6 victory, full recap and stats to follow, but the victory secured the Royals 14th win of the season and more impressive the #2 seed behind the Woodpeckers. The playoff bracket still has to shake out, but our first game will be Sunday 2 PM @ Rotary Park. Nice work on the season and let's keep the ball rolling.

Former Royals player, Dave "Turrets" Rooker, was quoted in recent media interview regarding his former team:

"Never thought I would see the day. You must have got some good players to be named later when you traded my butt to Seattle. Congrats.

Dave

Royals Stay Undefeated in August
thirteen
The Royals stayed undefeated in the month of August with their come-from-behind win Tuesday night over the Angels. The win was also the Royals 4th in a row. That is the longest win streak in Royals history. The Royals have one game remaining in the regular season before the Play-offs begin. The Royals face-off against the National Divisons 2nd place Attack Mules. The Boys in Blue control their own destiny, if they can pick-up yet another "W", their 5th in a row, they can secure the number 2 seed in the playoff bracket. And if they fall to the tough Mules, what a run it has been... Be sure to show up early to get a good seat for this season capper.

Boys in Blue on a Roll...
twelve
After going 4-5 in the month of July, the Boys and Blue have bounced back from back-to-back loses at the end of July to knock out 3 straight wins. This ties the Royals longest win streak since they started the season going 3-0. The Royals have played some tough teams over the last week and a half and the final 2 games will not be any different. Tuesday the Royals face off against the same Angels that a 7th inning rally a week ago only defeated 3-0, and then they cap off the season Sunday against the American Division 2nd place Attack Mules. The Boys in Blue will need to stay focus and reflexes sharp as the playoffs are just a week and a half away. The game Tuesday night against the Angels is at 7:00 PM in the friendly (but don't forget to lock your doors) confines of Kettering Fields. Good Hill seats are still available providing a panoramic view of all of the action. Diamond club seats are running low right behind homeplate. Act now to secure your seat for the action.

Royals Continue to Win
eleven
With hard work and solid play the Royals were able to get their 11th win of the season. The game was a pitching duel into the end, but 3 runs in the seventh secured the game and the win for the Royals. Roayls Starter Jason Griffith matched his season high 13 strikeouts on the night. See the game page for stats and recap. Up next for the Royals is their final divisional game against the Dayton Astros. Game time is 11 AM at Howell Field, field level seats are still available, but act now to be sure you don't miss out.

Royals Secure First Double-Digit Win Season in 6 Years
10th Win
The Royals took the field Sunday after losing 2 games to the Woodpeckers looking to get back on track on Sunday against divisonal foe and city rival, Kettering Outlaws. Also at stake for the Boys in Blue was the elusive 10th win. Over the past 6 season the most wins for a single regular season was 9. Would Sunday be the day? With Losito off the mound and OD at the plate, the Royals were able to capture their first 10 win season in six years, and with 4 games left how many more can the Royals notch in the win column this year? Stay tuned to see. See the full game recap and the stats for Sunday's win in the Schedule section.

Short-Handed Squad takes 2 on the backside against Woodpeckers...
braswell_bruise
On what would have to be the second hotest day of the year, 1st the Rangers 10-9 game, the Royals faced off in a pair of games against the #3 Woodpeckers with only 9 players on the day... On a weekend where 1/3 of the squad was out of town the "Boys in Blue" gave it their all. To add to the challenge, game one hurler for the Woody's boys was ex-Minor League Hurler, Bryan Braswell. He was able to hold on just long enough to pickup the win and leave his mark with the Royals to remember him by. Hats off to all Royals in attendance, and it was a great performance from all 3 pitchers that took the mound in the sweltering heat and humidity; Griffith, Duffy, and Biron. The Boys in Blue face off in game 3 of the series Thursday night 8:30 at Howell field. Be sure to show up early to get a seat for what hopes to be another close game. Full game recap and stats to follow soon.

Special Thanks to the Dean's and Duffy's for helping keeping up us fed and hungry during our rigorous double-headers.

Biron's blast leads to Royals Win
33
Biron makes a statement to league to fear the Royals 9-hole... Well some of the time... Okay every now and then.... Well more then than now... :) Biron's blast is the 2nd homerun the Royals have posted from the bottom of the order and it helps motivate the Boys in Blue to a 10-9 win over the Rangers. See the game summary for full recap.

Current Royal receives College Recognition...
Current Royal Slugger Ron Runyon was recently inducted into the Pikeville College Athletic Hall of Fame! What a great honor for such a great guy. Congratulations go out to Ron on this great accomplishment from the entire Royals family.
From the College Press Announcement:
"
Hall inductions highlight first game in Expo Center
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Saturday afternoon will be a busy day at Pikeville College, as the school plays its first game in the East Kentucky Expo Center and inducts four former student-athletes in the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

Peter Campbell, John Dotson, Ron Runyon and Charolette Shelton will join former teammates and classmates in the Hall of Fame. Campbell was a standout in both basketball and baseball, Dotson a dominant tennis player, Runyon a baseball star and Shelton a tremendous softball and volleyball player.
.....
As a sophomore, Runyon led the league with 12 home runs and RBIs with 48, and his batting average of .395 was second in the conference, just missing out on triple-crown honors. Those stout statistics allowed him to finish as runner up in the voting for the league MVP honor.

Runyon hit .350 as a junior and .330 as a senior, and finished with 24 home runs and 113 RBIs in his career.
