The Mud Hens began the season with a disappointing performance in the bitter cold at Valhalla. Facing the defending champion Hurricanes, the Hens wasted two very strong pitching performances to fall to 0-2. The team was admittedly short handed and were forced to play several players out of position.
Game one saw Scott Perlman start and throw a complete game allowing only 5 hits, four of them infield hits, while striking out 7.. Unfortunately the Hens offense could do nothing at the plate, striking out 16 times over the course of the 7 inning shutout. Kerry Moody was the only player not to strike out, walking once, and reaching base having been hit by a pitch. Moody also made the defensive play of the game diving into the right field hill to rob a sure double. In all the Hens managed 4 hits in the 3-0 loss.
Game two saw a pitchers battle that went into the 10th inning before a two out single gave the Hurricanes their second win on the day. Joe Cacciatto was in control and seemed on his way to victory, when a solo home run in the 6th tied the game. Cacciatto struck out 8 in his six innings of work. The score remained 3-3 as Chris Ahrenberg pitched in relief, but the Hens, despite putting runners in scoring position, could not push across another run. Matt Nigro pitched in with a double and 2 RBIs and Lou Osso added a double of his own to lead the Hens offense.
Next up for the Hens is a doubleheader vs. the 1-1 Bronx Yankees this Sunday at Valhalla HS.
