HEAD COACH - J.D. SELLERS
Biography of Coach Sellers

Coach J.D. Sellers is in his seventh year of coaching and teaching Biology at Kempner. He attended college at Navarro Jr. College on a baseball pitching scholarship, where he received his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. While attending Houston Baptist University on a baseball pitching scholarship, he set the record for the most saves, 13, in ’96 season; He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Kinesiology, graduating Cum Laude. He was Human Kinetics Major of the Year (’95-’96), All Regional Athletic Academic Recipient – 3 years, Dean’s List, and NAIA Big State Pitcher of the Year ’97. In his first year as Head Coach, he led the Cougars to a 26-9 season record. Through his leadership he helped the Cougars reach their 1st Playoff Birth in school history (15 years). During the playoff run the Cougars knock off Katy Taylor in the first round to become Bi-District Champs. In the second round the Cougars came back from a 1-0 game deficit to take games two and three from Houston Lamar to advance as Area Champs. The Cougars ended their season to a well fought series with 20-5A rival Clements Rangers to become a Region III. Quarter-Finalist. He and his wife, Marcy has a 3-year old daughter, Kennadie and a new born son Ryder.


VARSITY COACH BRIAN LAYTON
Brian Layton is now in his sixth year of coaching and second year at Kempner High School. Before Kempner he coached four years at Hightower High School where he coached the junior varsity. Coach Layton went to Chisholm High School in Enid Oklahoma where he was a four year letterman. He then went on to Barton County Community College, where he was a starting pitcher. He then attended the University of Central Oklahoma and pitched for one year. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in education with a mathematics option. He and his wife Tawny have two year old daughter Morgan Nicole.

ASSISTANT VARSITY-HEAD J.V. COACH MARK COCHRAN
Coach Cochran is in his 9th. year of coaching. He has coached at Kempner for five years and is in his 4th. year of teaching Health/Foundations of Fitness. Before coming to Kempner, he coached at Strake Jesuit College Prep., and Sugar Land Middle School. Coach Cochran attended Sam Houston State University and graduated from the University of Houston (Cum Laude) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. He was also awarded the "Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Pedagogy." Coach Cochran is married to his wife Jodi and has twins, 8, Travis and Tarah.


COACH JAY ELLIOTT
Biography of Jay Elliott
This is Coach Elliott’s first year at Kempner High School. Before coming to Kempner, he taught Texas History at Hempstead Middle School, and was the varsity assistant at Hempstead High. He spent the previous seven years at Houston Christian High School as the J.V. head coach, as well as varsity assistant. The highlight of his baseball coaching career was in 2000 when HCHS won the class AAA TAPPS State Championship. Coach Elliott graduated from Texas State University in 1996 with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science along with a minor in History. He currently teaches World History. He and his wife Cheryne have lived in Houston since 1996.


COACH WAYNE BARNES
Biography of Coach Barnes
Coach Wayne Barnes is in his 3rd year of coaching baseball, 1st year at Kempner High School. He currently teaches SLC at M.R. Wood Alternative School. He attended Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, graduated in 2002 with a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology/Special Education and a 3.42 GPA. His first two years of coaching baseball were at Taft High School were he was J.V. coach/Varsity Assistant. His J.V. team beat perennial power Sinton for the first time in 7 years (at any level).
