Keating's Fitness Center from Wilkes-Barre, Pa. went 6-0 last weekend in the Mid Atlantic Travel League. In doing so they captured the league's 2008 2nd weekend championship in Lancaster, Pa.
Keating's opened up the weekend with a 7-0 victory over Cornerstone Excavating as Troy Hertzler threw a no hitter and Jim Lawrence homered and singled. In their 2nd game Keating's beat Pa. Power 6-2 led by Toby Rank's home run, single and 4 RBI's. Mike Crawford picked up the mound win with 7 strike outs and 1 walk. In their last game of the round robin portion Keating's defeated the Virginia Merchants 7-0 with Troy Hertzler allowing 4 hits, striking out 8 and walking 2. Offensively Kevin Smith doubled and singled twice.
Keating's beat Pa. Power again in their quarter final game 3-1 Saturday night. Gregg Garrity tossed a 3 hitter, struck out 9 and walked 5 picking up the win. Brent Moyer and Justin Stock had 2 singles each. Brent Moyer belted 3 singles as Keating's beat Aqua 11-4 in their semi-final game. Mike Crawford picked up his 2nd win of the weekend.
Gregg Garrity threw a gem of a game in the championship game as Keating's beat South Lebanon 8-0 to win the 2nd weekend of the Mid Atlantic Travel League. He pitched a no hitter, allowing only 2 base runners, while stricking out 8 and walking 1.
Toby Ranck was 2 for 2 with 2 singles. Jim Lawrence went 1 for 2 with a 2 run home run. Ryan Frank had a 4th inning grand slam. Brent Moyer was 1 for 2 with a triple. Kevin Smith went 1 for 2 with an RBI double and Frank Keating Jr. was 1 for 2 with a single.
All 3 pitchers for Keating's had 2-0 records. Troy Hertzler pitched 11.2 innings. He didn't allow a run, gave up 4 hits, had 18 strike outs, and had 3 walks. Gregg Garrity pitched 12 innings, gave up 1 run, 3 hits, had 17 strike outs, 6 walks. Mike Crawford pitched 11.1 innings, struck out 10 and walked 4.
Toby Rank led the offense going 9 for 14, .643, 6 runs, .667 OBP, .857 SLG.
Brent Moyer was 7 for 11, .636, a triple, 6 singles, 1 stolen base, .636 OBP, .818 SLG.

KEATINGS CAPTURE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Keatings Fitness Center, from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, won the 2003 Mens Class B Fastpitch Softball National Championship with a perfect 6-0 record. Keatings is the first Pennsylvania team to ever win the class B Fastpitch National Tournament. The 43 team tournament was played over the Labor Day week-end in Salem, Virginia.
Keating's won their initial game of the tournament 6-1 against Champaign Nohren Farms from Illinois, behind the hitting of Tom Benfer and the pitching of Dave Stokes. Stokes picked up the complete game victory allowing one unearned run, 3 hits, striking out 8 and walking one. He retired the last 10 batters in order. Benfer had a fantastic day at the plate going 4 for 4 with a triple, 3 singles, and 2 RBI's. Mark Smith was 2 for 4 including 2 doubles and an RBI. Dave Martin had an RBI triple and drew a walk. Mike Rohrer and Dave Stokes each doubled.
For Champaign Centerfielder Steve Hall had a 4th inning double.
Art Devoe scattered 6 hits in leading the Fitness Men to their 2nd straight victory in the National Tournament, a 7-2 win over the Memphis Posse. Devoe had 13 strike outs and one walk in his complete game victory. Centerfielder Bret McHenry paced the offensive attack for Keating's with a 2 for 3 effort including a 1st inning leadoff homer, a single, and a base on balls. Steve Ray was 2 for 2 with a 2 run triple, a single, a walk, and a stolen base. Frank Keating Jr. and Mark Smith had a double and single apiece.
Keating's, the Pennsylvania State Champions for the 3rd straight year, next defeated Landis Markets, from Telford, Pa., 4-0 behind the superb pitching of Dave Stokes. In his shut-out performance, Stokes scattered 6 hits, struck out 6 batters and didn't allow a walk.
In the 5th inning of a scoreless tie, Keating's got on the scoreboard. With one out, Steve Ray started the rally with a single to right. After 2 consecutive walks to load the bases, Ray scored, what proved to be the winning run, on a wild pitch.
For Keating's Bret Bull McHenry and Steve Ray had 2 singles each.
Brian Arnold went 3 for 3 at the plate for Landis including a double and 2 singles.
Dave Stokes propelled Keating's Fitness Center to a 3-1 victory over McKie Sports allowing 3 hits. Stokes struck out 9 and walked one.
Offensively for the Fitness Men, Mike Keating, Dave Martin, and Mark Smith had 2 singles apiece. Frank Keating Jr., Steve Ray, Mike Rohrer, and Dave Stokes all singled.
For McKie's, from New York, Centerfielder Mike Sazzickhs blasted a 6th inning solo home run.
In the winner bracket final game Keating's advanced to the National Championship Game with a hard fought, come from behind, 3-2 victory over the Memphis Dawgs, with the help of a 7th inning home run by Mark Smith. With the score tied at 2 apiece, Smith led off the bottom half of the 7th inning by blasting the first pitch over the right center field fence for the game winner. Winning pitcher Dave Stokes, in relief of starter Art Devoe, pitched 3 innings, allowing no runs, one hit, had 3 strike outs and no walks. Devoe pitched 4 innings, gave up one earned run, struck out 10, and walked 3 batters. Travis Pannebecker and Steve Ray were both 2 for 2 at the plate, with a double and single each. Frank Keating Jr. was 2 for 3 including 2 singles and an RBI.
For the Dawgs Spence Cousar was 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 singles. Dion Cicinelli had a double.
Keating's Fitness Center captured the Championship with a 6-3 come from behind victory over the Memphis Dawgs.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the 5th, Keating's mounted their game winning rally. Left fielder Steve Ray, the tournament batting champion with an average of .667, led off with a single. He was sacrificed to 2nd by Bret McHenry. Dave Martin then hit a ball to the 2nd Baseman that went off his glove and rolled just far enough away to allow Ray to score the tying run. Martin stole 2nd base and Dave Stokes was hit by a pitch putting runners on 1st and 2nd. After a ground ball moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Mark Smith legged out an infield single to score Martin. Keating's added 2 more insurance runs in the 6th on a 2 run double by McHenry. In the bottom of the 7th the Dawgs took an offensive posture by getting 2 singles to lead off the inning. Winning pitcher Dave Stokes reared back and struck out the next 3 batters and the celebration was under way. Stokes wound up with 6 strike outs and no walks. He had a perfect 5-0 record in the championship tournament.
Steve Ray led the 13 hit attack for the winners going 3 for 3, all singles, and scored 3 runs. Bret McHenry was 2 for 2 including a triple, double, and 2 RBI's. Tom Benfer was 2 for 2 with 2 singles. Frank Keating Jr., Dave Martin, Mike Rohrer, Mark Smith, and Dave Stokes all singled.
For the Memphis team, Darryl Steakley was 2 for 3, including a solo homer in the 2nd and a single. Jeff Fletcher was also 2 for 3 with 2 singles.
Keating's finished the year with a 12 game winning streak and a 33-16 record.
Keatings had six players earn First Team All American. Pitcher: Dave Stokes, made the All American Team three out of the last four years; First Base: Frank Keating Jr., made the All American Team the last three years; Outfield: Steve Ray; Utility: Art Devoe, Bret McHenry, and Mark Smith. Batting Champion Steve Ray was the 2nd Keatings player in 3 years to win the National Batting Title. The other winner was Frank Keating Jr. in 2001 with an average of .705.
Keatings top pitcher in the tournament was Dave Stokes with a 5-0 record. He pitched 31 innings, had a 0.90 ERA, gave up 20 hits, had 32 strike outs, and walked 2 batters. Art Devoe had a 1-0 record, pitched 11 innings, had a 1.91 ERA, struck out 23, and walked 4.
Top hitters were: Mike Rohrer .750; Steve Ray 10 for 15, .667, triple, double, 8 singles, 3 stolen bases, 7 runs scored, .750 OBP, .933 SLG; Mark Smith .444, home run, 3 doubles, .524 OBP; Bret McHenry .438, home run, triple, 5 RBIs, .522 OBP; Tom Benfer .412, triple; Frank Keating Jr. .389, .500 OBP; Travis Pannebecker .300.
