This spring marks the 16th season of the second generation KC Sharks! It's hard to believe that much time has gone by. Watching the boys grow up from little kids to young men has been quite an experience and we hope to continue this for a few more seasons. We would love to make it 20 seasons before starting over!

How the time flies! How many of us can look back and remember the first time our boys picked up a bat, ball and glove? For some of us, it seems like they were born ready to step out onto the field. And now comes a time of mixed feelings for many parents and another step toward adulthood for our boys. Most of us moms especially can remember trying to offer encouragement when the game didn't go the way we wanted and many of you dads have had a pretty active role in coaching your son through the youth experience. Now the boys are, or will soon be trying out for the high school baseball team. It's going to be a big adjustment for a lot of us...parents and players, but we are confident everybody will do well.
Coach Ralph and I would like to wish all players, past, present and future, the best in their tryouts and upcoming season. Stay focused, put forth your best effort and give everything you have to the game during practice and game time. Keep your school work a priority or your grades will suffer. We feel like we have always been pretty fortunate that our players and families have been all around good sports and well rounded for the most part.

I just wanted to share with the Sharks that a part of the Sharks family that has passed away has been recognized. This morning, the expanded Wal-mart in Excelsior Springs held their grand re-opening. Part of the celebration included the naming of one of the side roads entering Wal-Mart. That street has been named "Elizabeth Ann Way" in honor of the mother of former Shark player Austin and wife of former Shark coach Jon. For those that were not around, Elizabeth was a part of our Sharks family from the beginning, but they had to leave the team because of the age divisions after two seasons, but returned for another season or two when Austin was able to play in our age group again.
Elizabeth was diagnosed after nearly a month in the hospital with cervical cancer. She would endure a short three month battle with the disease and we all suffered a big loss when her battle ended and she passed away in September, 2004. Elizabeth was one of those rare people that ALWAYS had a smile on her face! A smile that would gain her national attention in the Wal-Mart magazine nationwide.

With a majority of the boys playing high school baseball, knowing just what we can and cannot do to prepare for our league and tournament season when high school is over is something that we are trying to learn more about. We want all of our players to be for the spring season and to start working on setting a roster, but we know that we can't necessarily do that right now. We don't want to jeopardize your high school status. For right now, we are mainly seeking to know who wants to be a part of the KC Sharks after their high school season is over. We know we can't get solid commitments yet because some schools may want their players to continue to play with the high school team after the season ends.
