2010 Frosh 59: The Best Varsity-Playing Freshmen in America

Congratulations to the following KC Power 15s players who have been recognized as the Top Playing Varsity Freshman in America for 2010:

THE FROSH 59:

Madison Fletcher, 6-0 MB, Blue Valley West (Overland Park, Kansas) – A starter all year and six-rotation threat for coach Terry Flynn, Fletcher finished second on the Jaguars in kills, with 251 in 101 games for a state tournament team. Fletcher also was second in blocks (87), fourth in digs (126) and third in service receptions. She was selected to the Kansas 6A all-State Tournament Team. “Madison has a great jump top serve, is one of our primary passers, and dominates on both offense and defense in the front row,” said Flynn.  “Though she played the last half of the season with a stress fracture, she still attracted major attention at the 6A State Championship.”

SPECIAL MENTION:

Kali Eaken, 5-9 OH, Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) – A future setting star, the left-handed Eaken started and made significant contributions for the Kansas 5A champs last fall. In 99 games, she contributed 100 kills and 163 digs for the Stags.

Chloe Rogers, 5-10 OH, Blue Valley (Stillwell, Kansas) – A charismatic player with a very powerful attack, Rogers led the EKL in kills by a freshman, 267, en route to earning All-EKL Honorable Mention honors. She also contributed 118 digs and 30 blocks. “Chloe has filled the void of a standout hitter that our program has been missing,” said coach Jessica Palmer.  “We look forward to the growth she will provide our program with over the next three years.”

POWER 18-1 PLAYERS RECOGNIZED BY PREPVOLLEYBALL

Congratulations to the following Power 18-1 players who have been National recognized for their high school accomplishments. Good luck to all of our Power finalists.

Shelby Workman - Is one of 35 finalists for PrepVolleyball.com’s 2010 National HIGH SCHOOL Junior of the Year. Twenty-eight led their teams to state titles, while the other seven were driving forces behind their teams’ superb seasons. "Shelby Workman, 6-0 RS/S, Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) – This athletic lefty took over the final encounter with St. James at the finish and helped hand the national champion Thunder their only loss in 2010. Workman took over a lot of matches for the Stags last fall, as she was named Kansas 5A Player of the Year and a member of the All-State Tournament Team (for the third year in a row) as Miege won its third straight title."

Hanna Forst - Is one of 41 senior finalists for the National Player of the Year award. "Hanna Forst, 5-11 OH, St. James Academy (Lenexa, Kansas) – Forst led St. James to a 44-1 record in 2010, its third straight Class 4A state title and the mythical national championship. Kansas’ 6A Player of the Year and the Gatorade Kansas Player of the Year, Forst recorded 475 kills, 255 digs, 60 blocks and 18 aces for the Thunder and was named Greater Kansas City’s top player as the 2010 Evelyn Gates Award winner . “We played St. James Academy twice and Hanna Forst is a rock star,” said Mark Rice, head coach of rival Lee’s Summit West High. “She is an all-around force, a great leader and a great player for their team.”

Liz Powell - Is one of the top 80 Senior Setters in the country nominated for the 2010 Andi Collins Award. (Andi Collins wanted to be the best setter in the nation. Cancer ended that dream Sept. 4, 2003, a month shy of her 17th birthday. The Andi Collins Award, presented in her honor and memory, recognizes the best senior setter in the nation.) "Elizabeth Powell, 5-8, Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) – First Team All State and selected to the All Kansas State Tournament First Team, Powell guided the Stags to another 5A title in 2010. She’s not flashy, just very, very good."

St. James’ Forst picked for Evelyn Gates Award

The first to congratulate Hanna Forst (left) of St. James for winning the Gates award was friend and fellow finalist Lauren Ford of Aquinas.

SUSAN PFANNMULLER | Special to The Star
The first to congratulate Hanna Forst (left) of St. James for winning the Gates award was friend and fellow finalist Lauren Ford of Aquinas.

But by the time 11 a.m. rolled around on Thursday, the mystery was over for Forst, St. James’ senior left-side hitter. The Evelyn Gates Award, honoring the top volleyball player in the Kansas City area, was hers.

And the trophy, on a table in the gym and shrouded by a black cloth for most of the assembly, now bears a plaque with her

name on it. “We get down here, and there are cameras, and everyone is like ‘What is ” Forst said of her teammates’ reactions. “We had no idea, at all.going on?’ And I had no idea, either.”

Dorsey said afterward that it was a perfect example of Forst’s character. “She’s such a humble person. She wouldn’t even put all the pieces ” Dorsey said. “It speaks to what atogether and say ‘Yeah, this is about me,’ great kid she is.” On the court, Forst, who stands 5 feet 11, was even better. She led St. James in kills (475) and racked up 255 digs and 60 total blocks while leading the Thunder to a 44-1 record and its third consecutive Kansas 4A state team title. “She can do everything,” Dorsey said. “She can set, she can hit, she can serve, she can pass. … Her versatility and intensity and joy and passion for the game made her infectious to other people.” Perhaps the best indicator of the kind of season Forst had is the fact the coaches chose her over three other finalists who had strong resumes of their own:

•O’Hara middle hitter Tori Hurtt, who finished the season with 436 kills and led the Celtics to their fourth consecutive Missouri Class 3 state title.

•St. Thomas Aquinas middle blocker Lauren Ford, who had 339 kills and led her team to a second-place finish in Kansas 5A.

•Winnetonka outside hitter Shelby Corkill, who finished her career with 1,339 kills and 162 aces.

All were in attendance Thursday and were politely applauded for their accomplishments by the St. James students. But the day’s celebrity was Forst, who capped her career by winning the biggest honor out there for local high school volleyball players.

“I have been the luckiest girl in the world,” said Forst, who has signed a scholarship to play at South Carolina. “To win this, and to have the success in high school that I did and to have these amazing girls as my teammates … it’s incredible.”

HANNA FORST RECOGNIZED AS SUN ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

image_name2

KC POWER 18s Left Side Hitter - Hanna Forst is named the Sun Athlete of the Week!

Written by Mark Dewar
Friday, 24 September 2010 12:24

St. James Academy senior left-side hitter Hanna Forst is The Sun’s Athlete of the Week.

The 5-11 Forst enjoyed a blistering performance at the St. Joseph’s Academy Tournament of Champions in St. Louis on Sept. 18.For the tournament, she recorded 70 kills with a hitting percentage of .450, as well as eight solo blocks and 35 digs.

St. James Academy entered the event ranked No. 1 in the nation according to PrepVolleyball.com and emerged still undefeated on the season at 16-0.

Due to a Kansas State High School Activities Association rule, the Thunder could only compete for a single day at the tournament, forcing a long, five-match day for the team from Lenexa.

The Thunder took out Bishop Kelley (Tulsa, OK): 24-26, 25-16, 24-17; Dupont Manuel (Kentucky): 25-21, 25-14; St. Joseph's (St. Louis): 25-16, 27-25; Mercy (Kentucky): 25-12, 25-16; and in the championship match, Bishop Miege: 25-13, 25-12.

The win over Miege marked the Thunder’s second in the space of one week. St. James Academy is the reigning two-time Class 4A state champion. Miege is the same in 5A.

Regarding the talents of Forst, “Hanna is a special player for many reasons,” St. James Academy coach Nancy Dorsey said. “She has an unbelievable ability to see the court and to make wise choices as a hitter. She can hit the ball very hard, but her placement of shots and craftiness as a hitter is what makes her so hard to defend. On top of being a very strong offensive player, she is a very scrappy defender and hustles to keep every ball in play. She is a great court leader and an overall wonderful person.”

Specific to her play in St. Louis, “Hanna dominated in every match,” Dorsey noted. “She was able to get kills at will like she commanded the entire court. She also made some amazing defensive plays that kept the momentum on our side and made us very hard to beat. It was so much fun to watch Hanna play at her very best.”

POWER 16s PLAYERS RECOGNIZED BY PREP VOLLEYBALL

Top High School Sophomores:

HIGHEST HONORABLE MENTION (50)

Hanna Forst, 5-10 MB, St. James Academy (Lenexa KS) – Forst used her agility, mobility and jumping ability to dominate the net for the Thunder, one of the nation’s top teams. She finished 2008 with 219 kills, which ranked third on the team; and 81 solo blocks, which placed her second. Forst also set a school record for hitting percentage at .510. She was named to the state tournament team and was a Second Team All State selection in Class 4A.

Grace Whitley, 6-0 MB, St. Teresa’s Academy (Kansas City MO) -- Whitley was a force in the middle and back row for the Stars in 2008.  She led the team in kills, blocks and service aces before her ankle injury sidelined her until the end of the year.  She averaged 3.5 kills per game and 1.2 blocks per game and played her best against the Stars’ fiercest rivals.

Michaela Boehm, 5-9 MB, Archbishop O’Hara (Kansas City MO) – Named First Team All State despite missing significant time due to injury, Boehm still managed 280 kills and 72 blocks in 2008 and was on the floor when O’Hara won its second consecutive Missouri Class 3 title. Boehm also was Honorable Mention All-Metro.

Top High School Freshman:

THE FROSH 59!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shelby Workman, 6-0 RS/S, Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) – Workman took over the right side for graduated Gatorade Kansas Player of the Year Kathleen Ludwig and played like a Ludwig clone, leading the Stags to the 5A title in 2008. She finished the year with 315 kills, 100 more than anyone else on the team, while adding 81 blocks, 156 digs and strong serve-receive passing to the cause. She was First Team All State 5A, the only freshman so recognized, and a member of the all state tournament team.
