2014 Year in Review

The 2014 season was a challenging one.  Having already qualified for the 2014 PGF Championships in Californin (9th 2013) and not getting started until after Memorial Day, because of the late finish in Kansas high school ball, and not playing in the OGSA league, it put us 15-20 games behind our usual schedule.  We did however play 90 games from September to August, with 25+ games indoor during the winter tournaments.  We did okay, as we traveled to Boulder and Chicago to compete and get ready for Huntington Beach, CA.  We finished tied for 17th (out of 73 teams).  We were 3-3-1, winning our first two bracket games in ITB.

Offensively, we were led all year by Brooklin Hinz (U of Kentucky).  She led the team in all offensive categories including HR's (15), 161 total bases.  Paige Bange (U of Missouri) was second in most offensive areas, including HR's (7) and hit .338.  Also contributing was sophomore pitcher/outfielder Hailey Reed (.354) and junior Sam Stallbaumer (.328 and 53 out of 56 stolen bases).  Defensively we were solid behind the plate with Maddie McCracken and Kala Holder.  However, our infield defense struggled all season giving a lot of "extra" outs to other teams.  Our pitching staff was led by Allison Stewart (21-10) and Hailey and Haidyn Bassett chipped in with 13 wins each.

Best of luck to our departing seniors...Cass Berry (Emporia), Kelsey Wright (Drake), Allison Stewart (Arkansas), Elizabeth Leonard (Bradley), Brooklin Hinz (Kentucky), and Paige Bange (Missouri).  We'll miss them.

2013 Year in Review

The team started the season with (2) returning players (Jenni Brooks & Greer Hartman) and added (10) new players, which finished 49-15-3.  This team had terrific TEAM CHEMISTRY and was a pleasure for Dan Jones and I to coach.  We played 15-20 games in the Fall and (4) indoor tournaments in the Winter.  Greer left the team @ Thanksgiving and was replaced by Elizabeth Leonard @ 2B.

In our 1st game @ Memorial Day, Britanee Willard tore her ACL and it was a terrible loss for the season.  She was replaced by Greer.  We finished 2nd in the next tourney, then won our next two tourneys, including "Top Gun", where we won 7 games on Sunday to win it!  We traveled to Bloomington, IN for ASA NQ, we were 2-1 and were rained out.

Then off to Boulder, CO and we were 2-3-2 (losing to Team Mizzuno, PA Chaos before being down to Texas Blaze 7-0 an tying them on a HR from Hunter Klamm.  After Boulder, both pitchers went down.  Jenni was down for 3+ weeks and Allison for (10) days...both were back for Premier Gold Nationals in Huntington Beach, CA.  We were 2-1 in pool play and won 1st two bracket games on Maddie's & Brooklin's 3 run HRs in the 7th...lost to NJ Intensity 4-3, then beat AZ Firecrackers 3-2 and Beverly Bandits 6-5 (featured by Allison's Grand Slam & Brooklin's 2-out 1B hit.  We were elimated by Team Mizzuno 4-1 and finished 9th (of 70) teams and won a berth in the 2014 Nationals by finishing in the top 10.

A great ending for a group of great kids.  Special Kudos to Jenni Brooks, 3 years of Good pitching and hitting.... Coach Dan Eakin

2012 Year in Review

With 7 returning players, including both pitchers, expectations were high.  We added Kyra Slemp (SS) and Kylie Tanner (C) from tryouts and added Sara Bowen and Bailey Click in the Winter/Spring.  The biggest addition was Mary Gooding, after Memorial Day.
Following a productive Fall and Winter season and being short handed at Memorial Day, the team took off and won 4 straight tournaments, including the Premier Gold Qualifier in Minneapolis, MN.  Kelsey Kessler gave up 1 run in 3 games and we qualified for Premier Gold Nationals.  The highlight of that trip was the Mall of America visit with Dan Eakin and his 12 “daughters”.
We also played in the Boulder Fireworks Tournament, finishing 5th out of 80 teams.  All former and current Peppers know that’s a tough tournament.  Jenni Brooks did a great job as out only pitcher for the 1st 4 games, winning all 3 on Saturday
We journeyed to Oklahoma City for the ASA Gold Qualifier, sweeping all 5 games to earn our ASA Gold National berth.
Taking 2 weeks off from the heat, we returned to the Oklahoma City without Kelsey, who had finals at KU.  We were able to add Laney Knieb (P), who went 3-1.  Along with Jenni, who went 4-1, we achieved a 9th place finish.  Laney did a great job and really helped our team
We were then off to Premier Nationals in Huntington Beach, CA.  This trip made it 3 straight years for that prestigious tournament.  We went 4-3, finishing 24th out of 66 teams.  Overall, the team finished 49-12.  We played very solid defense all year.  Alex, Kyra, Greer, Sami, Jenni, and Mary were gold glovers in the infield, as were Kristin, Sami, and Mary in the outfield.  Campbell was a rock at catcher.Offensively, Alex Hugo was tremendous, hitting .494 followed by Campbell, who hit .416.  They hit 19 homeruns between them.  Big offensive contributors were:Kristin (.357), Sami (.338), Kyra (.329), Jenni (.328), Mary (.328), Greer (.298).
Lastly, our pitching sparkled.  Jenni threw 143 innings, with 31 walks, 110 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.02.  Kelsey threw 139 innings, with 18 walks, 141 strikeouts, and an ERA of 1.41.  Kelsey is the last of the Kessler family; Brandi (96-97), Holly (01-02).  Kelsey won many big games for the Peppers.  She’ll be missed as will all of this year’s team.  This was a great team with outstanding team chemistry.
