2012 Year In Review

With 7 returning players, including both pitchers, expectations were high.  We added Kyra Slemp (SS) and Kylie Tanner (C) from tryouts and added Sara Bowen and Bailey Click in the Winter/Spring.  The biggest addition was Mary Gooding, after Memorial Day.
Following a productive Fall and Winter season and being short handed at Memorial Day, the team took off and won 4 straight tournaments, including the Premier Gold Qualifier in Minneapolis, MN.  Kelsey Kessler gave up 1 run in 3 games and we qualified for Premier Gold Nationals.  The highlight of that trip was the Mall of America visit with Dan Eakin and his 12 “daughters”.
We also played in the Boulder Fireworks Tournament, finishing 5th out of 80 teams.  All former and current Peppers know that’s a tough tournament.  Jenni Brooks did a great job as out only pitcher for the 1st 4 games, winning all 3 on Saturday
We journeyed to Oklahoma City for the ASA Gold Qualifier, sweeping all 5 games to earn our ASA Gold National berth.
Taking 2 weeks off from the heat, we returned to the Oklahoma City without Kelsey, who had finals at KU.  We were able to add Laney Knieb (P), who went 3-1.  Along with Jenni, who went 4-1, we achieved a 9th place finish.  Laney did a great job and really helped our team
We were then off to Premier Nationals in Huntington Beach, CA.  This trip made it 3 straight years for that prestigious tournament.  We went 4-3, finishing 24th out of 66 teams.  Overall, the team finished 49-12.  We played very solid defense all year.  Alex, Kyra, Greer, Sami, Jenni, and Mary were gold glovers in the infield, as were Kristin, Sami, and Mary in the outfield.  Campbell was a rock at catcher.Offensively, Alex Hugo was tremendous, hitting .494 followed by Campbell, who hit .416.  They hit 19 homeruns between them.  Big offensive contributors were:Kristin (.357), Sami (.338), Kyra (.329), Jenni (.328), Mary (.328), Greer (.298).
Lastly, our pitching sparkled.  Jenni threw 143 innings, with 31 walks, 110 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.02.  Kelsey threw 139 innings, with 18 walks, 141 strikeouts, and an ERA of 1.41.  Kelsey is the last of the Kessler family; Brandi (96-97), Holly (01-02).  Kelsey won many big games for the Peppers.  She’ll be missed as will all of this year’s team.  This was a great team with outstanding team chemistry.
