Katy Rebels Girls Basketball Association: Welcome
The Katy Rebels Girls Basketball Association is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and oversees the selection and training of AAU select basketball teams for girls ages 8 to 17 in the South Texas region.
Our Association provides the opportunity for girls that have demonstrated a potential for a higher level of competition to play with and against girls of similar abilities. Each player will improve her basic fundamental skills, and learn advanced skills, through multiple practice/training sessions each week. In addition, she will participate in highly competitive tournaments throughout the Spring and Summer season. Our teams play in tournaments hosted by other local AAU/Select organizations such as Prime Time, BCI, MYBA, USA TSS, Premier Basketball, the AAU and the Junior Olympics. All of our teams attend at least one National Tournament each year. Some teams will participate in several National Tournaments.
We also offer Fall open gym and conditioning/skill sessions from Mid September to January for those girls who wish to continue their training and preparation for the upcoming season.
The Katy Rebel organization is also a feeder program for TeamXpress, the Premier National Travel Team from the Austin/San Antonio area (www.teamxpress.org). Players selected to move into that Elite level of play will participate in showcase tournaments all over the country including some international tournaments.
Our mission is to help each player prepare herself physically, mentally and emotionally to advance to her next level of play, whether that be a local recreation league, a Junior High or High School team or a College team. Each player will not only improve her basketball skills each season, but will also develop a strong work ethic while learning about the concepts of teamwork, dedication, and self discipline.
All of our Head Coaches/Trainers have Varsity and/or College playing experience and have coached for many years in local organizations, Junior High Schools and/or High Schools.
Contact Suzette Matejowsky at 281-831-7780 or katyrebelsgba@yahoo.com if you have questions about the organization.

Katy Rebel open gyms will be held EVERY Friday night from 6pm to 9pm. We are making arrangements with a new multi-court facility. Please check back for our new location. Play begins on Sept 17th and continues thru Nov 12th. Any girl from any school, league, club, area or city, in grades 2-12, is welcome to come play. With multiple courts available, the number of simultaneous games will greatly increase the amount of playing time each athlete will get. There will be a nominal entry fee of $5 per player. We will also offer one court dedicated to skill development only. Any girl that has paid the entry fee may participate in any portion of the skill development sessions being conducted that evening. She may move between this court and the games throughout the evening.
We offer another open gym option at Holland Elementary in Katy ISD for girls in grades 2-5 only. Every Friday night beginning September 17th and continuing thru November 12th from 6pm to 8pm. Same format as described below. Girls in these grades may attend either location. There is not an entry fee for this location. There will NOT be a skill development option at this location.
Games will be played in a round robin format from the teams formed at the beginning each cycle (6pm, 7pm, 8pm). Teams will be formed by age group and skill level. Younger girls will play against other girls close to their age and older girls will play against girls of similar age and/or skill level. New grade/skill appropriate teams will be formed after each cycle to allow players to come and go as they please. Players will call their own fouls. NO refs. Katy Rebel coaches will always be present to supervise the games and players. Parents are welcome to stay and watch, but must supervise siblings. NO playing in the hallways, bathrooms or on the other courts. Parents may drop off, however, they must return by 8:45pm. NO siblings allowed without a parent present at all times!
The first time a player attends an open gym, the parent will need to fill out a check- in form that will include parent contact information and insurance information. A separate list for each location will be created each week, so check-in will go quickly for returning players to that location. The form can be found under the Information/Forms tab to the left, for those who wish to fill it out in advance. This is recommended.
Open gym is a "coaching free" environment. It is designed to allow the girls the opportunity to play basketball for fun, without the fear of making mistakes and hearing about it from adults. It is an opportunity for them to play with and against girls of similar or better skills, regardless of grade level, and try out new skills or improve on those they already have. This enviroment will dramaticallly improve their skill level and understanding of the game, if they attend on a regular basis. Therefore, we will ask parents/coaches to refrain from offering "coaching tips" to any player, including their own. Sometimes the competition on the court is intense and amazing, but we should always remember that it is for the girls enjoyment and development and not for adult competitiveness.
Bring your player, and her basketball friends and teammates, to a night of basketball. Make sure each player has PLENTY of water and gatorade. We recommend one liter per hour of play. A snack is also recommended. Label everything as the number of players can reach 40-100 and items can get mixed up.
Please do not wear basketball court shoes outside. Wear flips or slides into and out of the gym. Change shoes once inside the gym. This will keep our courts free of dirt and debris.

Tryouts for our 2011 teams will take place in mid January for 6th-12th graders and in February for 3rd-5th graders. Specific information will be posted in November 2010. The tryout form is located under the Information/Forms tab to the left. It must be filled out completely and submitted at check in on the first day of tryouts. Attach a copy of the player's birth certificate, or passport, and a copy of the player's official report card to the form. (A Player will NOT be eligible to be placed on a team until these documents are provided. NO EXCEPTIONS!). There is a $15 tryout fee for each player.
Teams will be formed by grade level with AAU age stipulations (see tryout form). At least one team will be formed in the following grades: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th/10th or Junior Varsity, and Varsity (9th-12th). Many grade levels will have 2-3 teams. Read the Frequently Asked Questions document for more information.
Only grade level appropriate players and Katy Rebel coaches are allowed in the gyms during tryouts. NO EXCEPTIONS. TRYOUTS ARE CLOSED TO ALL PARENTS, SIBLINGS, AND OUTSIDE COACHES. Player drop off, after check in, is strongly recommended. The cafeteria will be available for parents who wish to stay for the 3 hour tryout sessions.

Congratulations to the 2010 5th grade RED team (2017). They earned the title of "Elite" as their team name designation for the 2011 season. The criteria to obtain this title for the Katy Rebel organization includes:
1. playing at least 3/4 of their regular season schedule one or two grade levels up in their tournaments.
2. placing in the top 3 places in the majority of those play-up tournaments.
3. Finishing in the top 8 in at least one National tournament.
4. Attending, and placing in the top 4, in at least 3 out of town tournaments against other elite level teams.
5. Agreement by the majority of the Katy Rebel coaching staff that the talent level present on that team will allow them to continue to successfully play above their grade level in the following season and beyond.
This distinction makes this the second Katy Rebel team to obtain this title in two seasons. The 2010 6th grade Elite team (2016) earned this title following their 2009 season. Several other age groups will attempt to earn the "ELITE" title in the 2011 season.

We are proud to announce our merger with TeamXpress - South Texas' Premier National Travel Teams based out of San Antonio, Tx. This is a Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil Foundation established in May of 2000. Visit their website for additional information: www.teamxpress.org . Read about Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil at www.scarletknights.com/print.asp?prID=6756 .
The Katy Rebel Organization will be the Houston-based TeamXpress AAU developmental program for girls ages 9-HSE to develop their skills and improve their level of play while working toward becoming an elite level player. Players selected from the Katy Rebel Organization to play at the elite level each season, will be placed on an appropriate TeamXpress team and will begin playing for their national travel teams. Those girls still in need of further developing their overall game for another season, will be placed on an appropriate, highly competitive Katy Rebel team. Every girl, and coach, in the Katy Rebel organization will be provided with periodic instruction from the TeamXpress elite level coaches, including Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil, to help develop their skills and prepare them for their next level of play. Katy Rebel players are not required to play for TeamXpress in high school.
The 2010 TeamXpress Skill Clinic dates will be announced in March 2010. Clinics are optional for Katy Rebel players, but you must be a member of a Katy Rebel team to participate in the skill clinics.
The May 2009 clinic featured Sophomore Sarah Miles from West Virgina University as a guest coach. She was selected as the 2009 Big East's Most Improved Player (same conference as UCONN) and helped to lead her team deep into the NCAA tournament. As of Janauary 7th, 2010 she is leading her team to a #22 National ranking and setting them up for another run into the NCAA tournament in March. We are working to bring her back as a clinic coach after the college season ends.
