    Doc and Chief Honored
    By:Joe Rector
The Karns High School Baseball Booster Club honored two men who have been influential in the success of the program.

Dr. William Butler is a well-known veterinarian in the area and has been recognized as a man who is willing to help others no matter what time of the day. Dr. Butler (Doc Butler) is a lifelong Karns resident. He sent five children through Karns and now has several grandchildren in Karns schools. His sons, daughters, and grandchildren have participated in a variety of sports and have distinguished themselves as excellent athletes and students. Doc has always been a strong supporter of the Karns sports programs and has been in attendance at many of the games.

We at Karns are especially grateful to him for making possible this new baseball field on this site. Dr. Butler donated a parcel of land to the school so that the field could be built here. Without that donation by him, the school would have had to find another site for its field. For being such a good friend and supporter of Karns High School and the baseball program, the Booster Club wishes to honor him with this plaque designating him as a lifetime member of the booster club and our thanks.

The second person to be honored is no stranger to anyone in the Karns community nor to many people in the Halls community. Dwight Smith coached the baseball program at Karns High for 19 years. During his tenure his teams won more than 240 games. When people think if Karns High Baseball, Dwight's name always comes to the forefront. "CHIEF" is the man responsible for building the baseball field that was the home site for ballgames until the construction of the new middle school caused it to be replaced. It was a field of dreams because Dwight, with the help of the community, built the field from scratch on a plot of red clay dirt. It turned into one of the nicest fields that Knoxville could display and was the site of numerous tournaments and professional tryouts.

The Chief made Karns baseball what it is today and he also made it possible for countless players to continue their baseball careers in colleges. Even today Dwight continues to work with players at his instructional facility in Oak Ridge and by coaching a team of 14-year-old players. Chief retired last year after 30 years in education and we want to say thank you for your contribution and to let you know that you are missed and always welcome at the ballpark. Chief is also being made a lifetime member of the Booster Club.

    FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

WOW!! The varsity has played seven games winning four and not one has finished with a win or loss by more than 2 runs. The JV has also been a lot of fun to watch and are currently 3-2 with an extra inning win. The pitching has been a very pleasant surprise and the hitting is starting to come around. These next couple of weeks we should see a lot of fun baseball.

As a club we also have some busy times coming up to support our teams. This Saturday is the Team Yard Sale and we need all of you to support the team. Please see the article in this newsletter about where, when, and what to do. The who is you. Debbie Cline is organizing this event and has spent a lot of time and effort to pull this together. Thanks Debbie. She and Diane Nix are selling shirts and that also seems to be going well.

We also have little league day coming up April 10th and a couple of special recognition days when we play Oak Ridge and Powell at home. Kim Grubb and Cendi Dillon are working on the Little League day and Debbie Cline is helping. Let them know if you will help. I hope you will take the time to come out and make these recognition days special for our team and our guests. Those dates are noted on the calendar of events.

The varsity has a tournament at Gibbs and Karns coming up and then will go to Lebanon the end of the month. The JV team will be in the JV tournament this month to be played at Oak Ridge. Come out and support our boys.

THANK YOU to all who helped with the Carrabbas dinner. The food was terrific and the fellowship was super. I hope you enjoyed it. Special THANKS to Tammy for organizing the event and taking on the pressure of making it happen. The preliminary estimate is that you sold more than 300 tickets and made more than $1400 for the team. I would also like to express my appreciation to those who have worked in the concessions stand thus far. The food has been great (especially the fries and cheese sticks) and we are making some good money.

Don’t forget that we will have elections at the May meeting and we are looking for people to serve for the next year. We have gotten some awesome work out of this year’s Board of Directors and I also appreciate the many others who helped to get so much accomplished. Thank you Carol, Allen, Lynne and Tammy. I want to also say that I truly appreciate everything that Larry did as a member of the Board and at the field. It was a joy to work with him and to know him as a friend. We are discussing an appropriate memorial and your suggestions will be welcomed.

    See you at the field!

    2001 Beaver Creek Classic

Follow the 2001 Beaver Creek Classic Tournament.
Note: Because of the rain, Thursday the 29th games were rescheduled to Saturday at varying times at the different high schools.

Note #2: The soggy conditions at Karns forced the tournament to be cut short. Play concluded at Halls, Powell and Gibbs, but the semifinals and finals scheduled at Karns were canceled Saturday. A few completed games were not reported as were some season records.
