HURRICANE SEASON
The Newsletter of the Kapolei High Football Team
HURRICANES SEASON BEGINS
WITH HIGH HOPES FOR 2008!!
The Kapolei Hurricanes will be playing a full late of games this season, including Kamehameha on August 22 in an inter-league game. The 2008 Hurricanes will be competing in a new look Red West Conference, as Aiea, Campbell and Radford has all dropped down to the White Conference, and they will be replaced by Waipahu, Pearl City and Nanakuli. The Hurricanes had another playoff season last year, and came within a missed extra point of going to the OIA Championship game and a game within reaching the HHSAA State Tournament.
Coming off a season that saw the Hurricanes become the first Hawaii team to defeat Kahuku at home and send the defending state champions home for the holidays was a great accomplishment, as the Hurricanes established itself as a program on the rise. Our Hurricanes are looking to secure a playoff spot next year in the revamped OIA league.
Even though the season ended in disappointment, the Hurricanes played well for most of the season.
Our Hurricanes open the scrimmage schedule with the always rugged Kailua Surfriders of the OIA Red East, and also play Red East contender Castle in our annual tussle. After Kamehameha, it is off to play a murderers row of Red West opponents beginning with the always tough Mililani Trojans, the high-flying Leilehua Mules, the powerful Waianae Seariders, and the afore mentioned Waipahu, Nanakuli and Pearl City.
To get ready for the challenges that lay ahead, our boys will need to put in the necessary hard work and effort in the classroom, the weight room, and on the field as they get ready to continue a tradition of excellence on and off the field in 2008! We have a lot of good and talented boys who are going to who have to step up and show leadership and poise this year.
We look forward to the continued support that the fans and families of our community has given our Hurricanes!!
TRAINING ROOM RULES
Our training room is a modern, well equipped facility that is used to treat and rehab injuries. Our Trainers are Alex Lo,and Emily Vincent, both certified athletic trainers.
We have certain rules that our athletes must follow. All athletes must sign in before treatment. They must follow the rehab regimen of the trainer when injured. All players must refrain form swearing and loitering.
KAPOLEI FOOTBALL CRITERIA FOR PLAYER TRYOUTS AND EVALUATION
Evaluation of the team occurs all the time.It is an ongoing process. We as coaches are constantly attempting to upgrade all areas within the team. Thus, we are going to experiment and sometomes move players around to find the right combination that we feel is right fot he success of our team.
We advocate open competition between players who are designated to play a certain position. These evaluations are subject to the Head Coach's discretion. This player movement and subsequent experimentation and competition withtin the team is an essential tool to evaluate our players. Competition among the squad only makes everyone better.
Our tryouts are based on the following criteria:
*The ability to demonstrate the consistent execution of all assignments and responsibilities during all practices and games according to their positions.
*Effort (trying hard, never slacking or quitting)
*Attitude (adherence to our code of conduct, not complaining about doing necessary things, poor attitude that is detrimental to the team)
*Attendance to practice everyday and on time
*Attendance to spring and summer practices
*Ability (block, tackle, run etc.)
*Poise (ability to handle oneself under duress or pressure)
*Skill (football playing skill)
Cuts will be determined using the aforementioned criteria. We will weigh all of the standards before a decision is made.
We want all parents to know that cut dates are not until the first week of August, so a player may spend an entire summer practicing with the team, but may still get cut in August or later.
We will continue to evaluate all of our players throughout the spring and summer months of practice as we gear up for the upcoming season.
HURRICANES TO HAVE ROSTER LIMITS IN 2008
Kapolei Football will be more streamlined than in the past, as we will have roster cuts and limits on both the JV and Varsity squads. We are looking to carry around 50 players on each squad. In the past, we had 100 players on the JV. Although we appreciate the interest and large turnout, there are many safety and logistical problems that occurred. The coaches-to-players ratio was inadequate.
There were also problems with equiptment, either not having enough of it, or not having enough that fit properly. Problems also continued in trying to accommodate such a large number of players in a makeshift locker room facility. Lastly, the federal gender equity law has affected our programs and compliance with this mandate means we can cannot have an inordinate amount of players over and above what is deemed reasonable and justifiable.
Kapolei Football will have a safe, workable number to deal with on and off the field. Because of safety concerns and gender equity adherences, we are forced to limit the number of student-athlete participants on football.
HURRICANES TO SHOW STRENGTH THORUGH CHARACTER
We will promote character development in our athletes, as well as support academic achievement.
The following will not be tolerated by our football athletes and managers: swearing, smoking, alcohol consumption, illegal drugs, gang membership, bandannas, doo-rags, fighting, gambling, cutting classes, vandalism, excessive tardiness or absenteeism form school or practices, and wearing any jewelry, clothing, or hats depicting illegal drugs or obscenities.
Our athletes will not engage in any activity that compromises their standing as mebers of the Kapolei Football Team or brings embarassment to the school, the athletic department, the coaches, or teammates. We will rquire that all players be respectful to all adult authority figures, including teachers, coaches, administrators, and support staff, as well teammates and schoolmates. Students who cut class, arrive late to school, are insubordinate, or have behavior problems will be dealt with through running opportunities and/or missed playing time.
KAPOLEI FOOTBALL KICKOFF NIGHT
Our 8th annual Kickoff Night will be held on Wednesday, August 6th at 6:30 pm in the Kapolei High School Gymnasium.
All parents and players are expected to be in attendance at this event. You will be able to meet the Athletic Director, Head Football Coach, and support staff.
You may raise any questions and concerns you may have about our program at this time. Youll hear our philosophy and objectives for the upcoming season.
The Sports Risk Awareness video will be shown at this time and all parents will have to fill out a form consenting to allow their child to participate in interscholastic athletics. There will be other forms to fill out as well so please dont miss out!
VARSITY AND JAYVEE TO BE ONE TEAM!!
Our Varsity and Junior Varsity programs will become more in line with our One Team philosophy. From this season on, both teams will become one. Both teams will practice together, with the Jayvee running the exact same plays and using the same terminology. This approach will pay dividends for both teams as we move forward in unison. Our fields are large enough and wide enough to accommodate both teams.
OUR NEW STADIUM
For the first time in team history, Kapolei will finally have its own visitor's bleachers this season. The field is a state of the art facility, with a grass surface that has a tremendous drainage system. We ask that our fans take extra care in helping to keep our stadium beautiful.
We have the greatest fans in the OIA, and we will be sharing only one bleacher with the opposing team, so we need to practice good sportsmanship at home games
