Comments..Only loss this year was to Albemarle. Don Argo played in Shrine Bowl.
You talk about great defensive teams, just look at the games below: 7 shut-outs, gave up 6 to Spencer and 13 to Winecoff. That’s an avg. of 2.1 pts. a game given up in 9 games . The lone loss to Albemarle by the score of 26-0 has to make you Wonder just how good a team Albemarle was.

Sept. 4. 1953 Kannapolis opened its season at Spencer, and 3,000 fans (biggest crowd in Spencer history) turned out to watch. One of the biggest plays in this game was when Ken argo recovered a fumble in mid-air and made a great return. K-town scored on the next play.

BIG NEWS this year was the drowning death of Mr. A.L. Brown. The date was Dec. 19th, 1955, just three years after the new high school was named after him. His car went through the fence and into the lake in from of the mill. Police speculated that he must have accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. Several people tried to save him, but the water was so cold that some of them had to be taken to the hospital after their attempts, due to exposure. He was vice-president and general manager of Cannon Mills at the time of his death.

Many thanks to a devoted fan for this information. I assumed that the Stadium was opened around the same time the school opened in 1952. I have never bothered to check it out, though. Some friends and I got in a discussion about this at one of the football games this past season. No one actually knew for sure. One said he knew someone in the stands that would probably know. He came back and said around 1957. Now thanks to this fan, I have the exact date. The Stadium was actually dedicated on Sept. 12, 1958 prior to the Albemarle game. But the first game was played the week before, Sept. 5, 1958 against Salisbury. Don't know the reason why this game was played a week before the dedication.

He talked about passing the ball all week, but the WONDERS never attempted a single pass. QB Rocky Fisher ran 47 yrds. on a busted pass play and scored the only TD of the game. The WONDER defense held Salisbury Boyden to 8 first downs, four of those came on penalities.

I remember in this year, we had a monsoon rain storm down at Concord’s Webb Field. My wife and I were dating at that time. We got there a little late and had to sit in the bleachers behind the endzone. Concord had a couple of big backs and they just plowed straight ahead. Concord won 12-0. It was raining so hard that you couldn’t see the players until they where right in front of you.

Sept. 30, 1966 Kannapolis/Statesville...The one thing I remember most about this game was Statesville RB Eddie Gamble just running wild. Also helping out for the Greyhounds were Lynn Davenport and Danny Oswalt in a 54-0 Statesville rout. Just a terrible thing to watch if you were a WONDER fan. Regardless, the WONDERS still had a great season at 8-2.

Both teams were undefeated as Lexington came to town. The game was played in front of 7,000 fans. Haskell Stanback left the game early with an injury, but QB Dan Dayvault and FB Mike Freeman took up the slack as the WONDERS won 14-9. Slate Tuttle recovered a fumble that set up Mike Freeman's TD run. Benny Russell also had a fumble recovery that killed Lexington last threat.

Sept. 20, 1968 In 1967, the Lexington Yellow Jackets won the WNCHSAA championship. They had only one loss, and that was to Kannapolis. They were determined to get revenge in 1968, but the game ended in a tie(14-14) at Lexington. Haskell Stanback had a TD run of 85 yrds., while Tony Davis scored on a 58 yrd. sprint. Randall Perkins added the very important PATs. K-town actually won the game in OT, but in those days the tiebreacker was used only to break deadlocks.

Comments… My greatest memory of Haskell Stanback was when K-town was backed up inside the five yard line, he came through the line, made a few moves, and was gone.

Haskell also had a great game against South Rowan on Oct. 31, 1969 in a 32-14 Wonder's win. He had 156 yds. on 18 rushes, and 4 TDs. That 4 TDs gave him 21 for the season. He went on to play at Tennessee and the Atlanta Falcons.

Comments… Remember Lacy as being a huge player(around 6’7” and 275 lbs.) and Terry as being a QB with great broken field talent.

Sept. 7, 1973
Kannapolis opened the season with a 33-0 win over South Rowan. 270 lb. Lacy Brumley was the kicker. One of the highlights of the game was when he had a bad snap on an extra point, and rumbled down the field only to be stopped short. He did, however, add two field goals. QB Terry Cunningham had a huge game, including a 58 yrd. pass to Larry Anthony.

An estimated crowd of 9,000 turned out to watch the WONDERS take on South Rowan. Kannapolis gave South their only regular season defeat in 1977. South lost their QB Alby Stamey on the third play of the game. K-town's Angelo Chapman and Keith Thompson forced a fumle, with Ron Bost recovering. Carlos Cunningham scored from the 2 yrd. line. Comments…Lost to Greensboro Page 21-19 in playoffs. This team was ranked as high as 17th in the nation at one time. Along with those three players, Winston Johnson, Brent Holbrooks, Homer Gregory. Just an awesome amount of talent. Ethan stood 6’4” and around 220lbs. Lance was 6’3” and 275 lbs., and Terry was 5’10” and 195 lbs. What a team! Offensive line, defensive line, special teams, were all very good. I can see them even now, with that wishbone clicking on all cylinders. Just dominated about everyone in the reg. season except RJ Reynolds, which ended in a tie. Then we ran into Greensboro Page, but that game even went down to the wire, with Page winning 21-19.

Ethan went to Carolina, then to Kansas City Chiefs and finished with the Oakland Raiders. Terry and Lance went to LSU, where Terry had to drop out, but Lance finished and went to the St. Louis Cardinals , which became the Arizona Cardinals. He had a long NFL career(around 14 years);  finishing with the Giants, I think.

Comments…When I think of Tracy Johnson, I remember when he layed a lick on Statesville’s star running back in the end zone and put him out at the start of the game. Tremendous player!

Mr. Lott was unstoppable in the open field. Tracy Johnson and James Lott were All-State this year.

Tracy scored 2 Tds and Tony Smith had one, as the WONDERS defeated Northwest Cabarrus 18-0 and improved to 6-0. Northwest(2-4) stopped K-town 4 times inside the 10 yd. line. Kannapolis routed Davie County 25-0 in the 1st round of the state playoffs. It was their 7th shutout in 11 games. Tony Smith rushed for 178 yds.

Lost to Tarboro in the state championship game played in Kannapolis 22-0. Probably the worst game I’ve seen a WONDER team play. Complete domination by Tarboro. I remember it also being one of the coldest nights I’ve sat out in. I even brought my camping heater and people were coming up to me to warm their hands.

BTW….the Junior class had won 32 straight games before the loss to Tarboro.

3A State Champions Dec. 10, 1989
Coaches Bruce Hardin and Staff (1989-1999)
Record….14-1 (Lost to Statesville in reg. season but came back in the playoffs to defeat them. Beat Burlington Cummings 24-0 for State 3A Title.

Players…Maurice Blakeney, Reggie Wells, Mike Morton, and Greg Jones.

Comments… Burlington Cummings was defending champs with a winning streak of 27 games. They were just rolling over everybody, led by future Georgia Tech QB Donnie Davis. Coming into the title game, Cummings was averaging 31.4 pt. per outing. Davis had rewritten the NCHSAA record book with 3,612 passing yards and 32 TDs. Virtually no one gave the Wonders much of a chance. But with MVP Reggie Wells(who played receiver and defensive back) @ 5'7" and only weighed 138lbs., and had a 1000 lb. heart, and QB "Mo" Blakeney, the WONDERS got the job done. Reggie had an 18 yd. run and a 53 yd. pass from Blakeney for TDs. He also had one interception and tipped another to a team mate. The WONDERS had a great defensive scheme by 1st year Coach Bruce Hardin and Co., and led by LB Mike Morton (K-town only rushed 3 and sometimes 4 players, everyone else was basically a defensive back), they shut out the Cavaliers. The front 3 or 4 WONDERS had 2 sacks, and had pressure on Davis all night. The Cummings Cavaliers had not been shutout since 1983. The Wonders outrushed Cummings 206-18.

Mike Morton played in the '95 Senior Bowl.

2008 Bell Game

Maurice Blakeney was selected to be in the Elon University Hall of Fame Sept. 8, 2007.

The WONDERS' Senior class went 55-4-2, starting with their 7th grade season.

One thing that also sticks out about this game was the weather. Kannapolis left for Chapel Hill on Thursday, but because of a snowstorm, the game was not played until Sunday night.

A lot of folks rate this game as the best football performance ever by a WONDER team.

What a WONDERful night in Chapel Hill!!!!

Comments..Couldn.t get past Statesville in Playoffs, also lost to the “Hounds” in the reg. season. Who can forget the Concord game when Mo threw the ball up with no time left on the clock and Scott Jordan caught it in the endzone as it bounced of a Concord player hands into his. Everthing was out of bounds except his feet, to give Kannapolis the win. Biggest thriller of the series. This defense has to rank right up there with the best…averaged giving up 5.8 pts. a game for the 10 game reg. season, and recorded 5 shutouts.

Comments…State Title game loss to High Point Andrews 24-14. Andrew’s Darius Brewington (state sprint champion) did most of the damage along with Red Raider QB Seng Yu, who had a very solid game. One of the people I remember most on the K-town team this season was #77 Scott Belcher. He was most always the first one downfield on the kickoffs and punts to really lay a lick on someone. Great hustle all the time!

Comments… Bobby Lawson ran as hard as anyone I’ve seen for his size. I especially remember the wins over Forest Hills(the only time we beat them) and H.P. Andrews. Andrews was rated #1 in the state and undefeated at the time, and the WONDERS shut them out 14-0 @ Simeon Stadium in High Point. That was extremely satisfying because we weren't given a chance to beat them and lots of people already had them crowned state champions.

In the 10th meeting with East Rowan, K-town came in having won all previous 9 and had outscored the Mustangs 363-40. East came into this game in WONDERland with a record 0f 1-5. David Arey of East made a circus catch in the endzone for the only TD. K-town had a 4th and 1 at the East 10 yd. line in the closing moments, but Bobby Lawson was stacked up for no gain and the Mustangs took over.

Beat N.E. Guilford by 34-12(Dec. 12th, 1997)
Record….15-1(only loss to East Rowan in reg. season)
Players….Nick Maddox, William Craft, Jeff Sheets, Phillip Johnson, Danny Jenkins, Traun Brown, Desmond Miller, Willie Pore, and John Garver
Comments… One of the things that has to be listed was the 2nd round game with Burns. John Garver kicked a 20 yd. field goal with 37 secs. on the clock in a very dense fog to win the game for K-town 17-16 and to enable the WONDERS to continue on to the state title.

In the Sun Valley game, Nick Maddox returned 2 punts(74 and 64 yds.) for TDs in the first 5 minutes. Traun Brown added 132 yds. rushing and 2 TDs. K-town won 35-7.

In the Kings Mtn. game,  lineman Phillip "Fluff" Johnson returned an interception 72 yards for a TD on the last play of the first half in K-town's 40-27 3A semifinal playoff win over Kings Mountain. Nick Maddox scored 3 long TDs, and QB William Craft threw a TD pass to Maddox and ran for a score.

In the title game, Nick put on an incredible show. He set 4 state records….most TDs ..4, rushing yardage ..205, longest run from scrimmage..78yds, and longest pass reception..98yds, and most of it was done in the first quarter. He was sick and didn’t play the 2nd and some of the 3rd quarter. Most amazing first quarter by an individual I will ever see. He amassed 332 All-purpose yds.,and most of this was done in 1 quarter. I believe that if he hadn’t got sick, he could have set some records that would have stood for quite some time. He was also back to back player of the year in ’97 and ’98 in North Carolina. He was recuited by many D1 schols and made his decision to go to Florida State.

Comments.. Kings Mtn. came in with one of the biggest offensive lines I’ve ever seen. Several 300+lbers. opened up holes for Anthony Hilemen. The Mountaineers made a last minute drive to win the game. Nick played his last game and I consider him to be the best player to ever put on a Wonder uniform.

Nick was named the NCHSAA Male Athlete of the Year for 1999.

Nick is a three-sport star in football, basketball and track, headed to Florida State University on a football scholarship. The six-foot, 190-pounder was a Parade All-American in '97 and twice earned Associated Press Football State Player of the Year honors in '97 and '98. He scored 114 touchdowns and a state record 686 points during his football career and rushed for an incredible 6,654 yards. That includes 2,574 yards and an average of 9.6 yards per carry as a senior, during which he scored 45 touchdowns.

He was a three-year starter in basketball, although he didn't play this year due to the time commitment involved with his recruiting in football. An all-conference player in basketball with a 37-inch vertical leap, he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds as a junior. And in track he has qualified for the NCHSAA state championships three consecutive years, running in the 100 and 200 and on a couple of relay teams

Nick is also a fine student and is a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Spanish Club, and heattended Boys State of North Carolina.

More on Nick.....One of the most sought after running backs in the country...totaled 2,536 yards and 33 touchdowns on 267 carries as a senior (9.5 yards per carry)...had 20 catches for 268 yards and eight scores...added four punt returns for touchdowns of 50 yards or more...finished his career with 6,624 rushing yards and 114 touchdowns (a state record at the time)...a Parade All-American and first-team USA Today All-USA selection...the USA Today Player of the Year for the state of North Carolina ...Tom Lemming's No. 1 prospect in the Mid-Atlantic and No. 2 prospect nationally...SuperPrep's No. 4 running back (No. 14 player overall) nationally...No.1 running back in the country by PrepStar and offensive MVP of the ACC region… regarded as the No. 8 prospect in the country by The Sporting News...listed at No. 22 overall by the NRA...named the 1998 Gatorade Circle of Champions high school player of the year for the Southern region and state of North Carolina (athletic/academic achievement)...the No. 1 player in the state according to Bill Buchalter...also ran track and played basketball at Brown...led football team to 13-1 season as a senior...carried 10 times for 102 yards and two scores (12 and 60-yard runs) in the North Carolina/South Carolina Shrine Bowl...reported 40-yard dash of 4.5...chose FSU over Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and Notre Dame.

Sept.4, 1998
Nick had 3 TDs in the South Rowan game, but Justin Hardin, in just his second varsity start, completed 10-of 12 passes for 205 yrds., and 3 TDs. Two of the TDs went to his twin brother, Blair.

Kannapolis scores 97; Maddox sets state record
By Steve Winzenread
Assistant Sports Editor

KANNAPOLIS - Has there ever been a Kannapolis football team like this one?  The take no prisoners Wonders rolled to a 97-0 South Piedmont Conference victory over Northwest Cabarrus Friday night.  The state's top ranked 3A team improved to 10-0, clinching at least a co-championship in the SPC, plus a playoff spot as they defend their state title.

While we're pondering greatness, how many teams ever have a Nick Maddox?  The senior running back scored five of the Wonders' 14 touchdowns against Northwest, giving him 104 TDs in his high school career, a state record.

Maddox, already established as the career rushing leader in Cabarrus County and last year's N.C. player of the year, said the scoring record meant more than the rushing mark."It took a team efford to make that scoiring record," Maddox said.  "Anytime a team breaks a scoring redord, that'a a big highlight."

Just like Maddox, the Wonders are piling up incredible numbers.  They've outscored seven SPC opponents 402-32, and average beating of 57 to 4.5.  That's dominance.

"This team is better than last year's team," said senior Evar Johnson, who plays fullback and defensive end.

Bruce Hardin, the Wonders' eminently successful veteran head coach, said he's never coached a team that overwhelms the way this year's team does.

"I just keep waiting for someone to hit me over the head," Hardin said.  "The kids work hard.  The coaches prepare.  We're just not very big.  They're quick.  They come to practice and have a lot of enthusiasm.  As soon as they walk in the locker room every day, it's a new adventure.

"Hardin thought the Wonders might be due for a letdown against Northwest.  But this team doesn't seem to know what a letdown is.

They scored 63 points in the first half Friday Night.  Justin Hardin started the parade to the endzone with a 17-yard run, capping an 80-yard drive as one more time the Wonders received the opening kickoff and drove the ball the length of the field.

Paul Allen kept it going with a 62-yard interception return of a halfback pass for a 13-0 lead.

Still in the first quarter, Maddox broke TD runs of 75 and 23 yards.  He also ran for a two-point conversion.

Maddox added a nine-yard run in the second quarter to put the Wonders ahead 35-0.

The Wonders intercepted seven Northwest passes (and recovered two Trojan fumbles).  One of those interceptions resulted in a 100-yard return by Marcus Rivens for the Wonders' sixth TD of the night.

On the ensuing kickoff, Northwest fumbled, and Blair Hardin returned the ball 37 yards for a touchdown.

Maddox then tied the previous state record of 103 career touchdowns, set by Anthony Saunders of Western Guilford in 1996, on a 39-yard run with 4:20 left in the first half.

It was a Maddox special.  He stopped at the 15, cut all the way across the field to his left, then eluded two Northwest defenders inside the five.

And still the first-half scoring wasn't finished.

The Wonders followed a Trojan punt by moving 40 yards in 4 plays, the final one on a 16-yard pass from Justin Hardin to his twin brother Blair with 1:39 left in the half.

John Garver kicked seven PATs in that remarkable first half.  Tramaine Robinson made three interceptions, each of which was followed by a Kannapolis TD.  Robinson also had three interceptions in the Harding game two weeks earlier.

Nate Jones and Duran Lipscomb added interceptions in the second half and Matt Crosby recovered a Trojan fumble, as the Wonders scored 34 more points, including the record-breaker for Maddox.

Taht came on a nine-yard run with 7:12 left in the third quarter.  Maddox knelt in the left corner of the endzone, then was congratulated by a stream of teammates, coaches and his mother as he made his way across the field to the Kannapolis sideline.

"This team loves him to death" Bruce Hardin said.  "There's great chemistry.  He'll take (the record) and share it with everybody.

""They're the ones who got me here," Maddox said.  "They got me that touchdown.  They've ben here through thick and thin.

"Maddox who has 35 touchdowns this season, carried 16 times for 276 yards, putting him over 2,000 yards for the season and over 6,000 yards for his career.

Correy Maxwell had 134 yards rushing on 12 carries, with TD runs of nine and 50 yards.

Robinson scored twice, on runs of 80 and two yards.  He totaled 79 yards rushing on three carries.

Justin Hardin added 66 yards on four carries.  The Wonders ran for 587 yards and passed for 29 for 616 total yards.

When the game ended, the Northwest coaching staff and almost all of the Trojan players headed for their bus, avoiding shaking hands after the lopsided defeat.

"I can't apologize for our kids playing hard," Bruce Hardin said.  "They didn't come out here to do anyting to humilate anyone. They just play football hard.

""We played everybody.  The first team started the second half because I asked Nick if he wanted to get the record tonight and he said, "Coach, I'd like to get it tonight."
