Comments…Kannapolis lost to West Rowan in the 7th game of the year 25-22. I believe this was the first loss to West Rowan in the series. The loss was brought about by a very questionable onsides kick.

But one of the most memorable games had to be the game with South Point in the second round of the playoffs. It went to double overtime with South Point winning by an interception by Devon Lowery in the second overtime. The score 38-31.

Comments… First half of the season, we had too many injuries to count. Started off the year 1-3, but got one back with a Concord forfeit, then reeled off 9 straight, this included a first round game with Asheville and then a long road trip to Franklin. Beautiful place to watch a ballgame with the moon hanging over the mountains. I stayed overnight just a mile from the stadium at the MicroInn, went to the game, spent the night, and left the next morning for Harrah’s, before heading home. Then came the game at Ragsdale. The WONDERS were outmanned in this one. Just too many great athletes for Ragsdale.

On a side note, in the West Rowan game, K-town scored on it's first 5 possessions and QB Drew Maher had 179 yds. passing in the first half.

Record…9-4
Players…Drew Maher, Brandon Franklin, Maurice Edwards, and Josh Reeves, Jonathan Peoples, Dereck Williams, Josh Russell, Jamil Weaks, Andrew King, and Calvin Bacon.
Comments…Very stressful year for the Wonders. The first game with North Rowan at North was postponed until Monday because of a wet field. Then, Drew Maher(QB) goes down with a broken leg. Lost for the season. Maurice Edwards was injured most of the year with ankle, knee, and shoulder problems. Several other injuries to players had the team on the ropes early in the season. We welcomed the addition of Calvin Bacon from Piedmont. The young man probably would have been our QB, but Brandon Franklin stepped up big time and has become one of the best QBs in the region. Calvin is now playing LB for the Wonders.

Then in the game with South Rowan, it rained very heavy for about 45 min. right before kickoff. The field was already wet and then this rain made it very bad. The game with Mooresville was postponed until Monday due to the wet conditions. Then it rained all day Monday. The game was played and the field took another beating. It just hasn’t recovered since the South game. It’s going to need major surgery in the offseason. Then Justin Galarza(RB) left the team. Rumor has it he is at South Rowan. Another rumor is that Desmond Robinson had gone to Concord. And now, our kicker, Chase Lowder is no longer with the team.

The Wonder defense has been under fire all season. I will have to agree they are not playing like the defenses of old. We have given up a tremendous amount of points. That has been the problem with the team this season. The offense is putting up enough points to win but the defense has trouble keeping the other team in check. But they really came alive against Mooresville, an undefeated team avg. 40 pts. a game. They pretty much controlled the game, only giving up 13 pts. while the offense scored 24 pts. Now they are in position to claim at least a share of the conference title. They looked like the Wonders of old in the Mooresville game. The game at East Rowan was pretty much dominated by the Wonders. The defense recorded its first shutout of the season. Last game of the reg. season with North Iredell was almost the second shutout. North scored with just about 2 min. left in the 4th quarter on a pass against the 2nd and 3rd team players. Maurice Edwards had a good game with 112 yds. on 14 carries and 2 Tds. Another member of the team who had a great season is receiver Dereck Williams, who despite having a knee injury in his Junior year, came back strong as a Senior. He had over 1,000 receiving and had 13 TDs and avg, over 29 yds. a catch this season. Big time numbers! The defense has really played well the last 3 games. Good to have them back where they belong. Right at the top. Now we get ready for the playoffs as the #1 seed from the NPC. The NCHSAA has made a mockery of the playoffs. Not only are there a lot of teams who don’t deserve to be included, but they have loaded up the 3A West with most of the top ten teams in the polls. A lot of pretty good teams will make an early exit because of this. I don’t understand why they put so many great teams in one bracket. I hope they realized what a farce they have created. Nothing fair or equal about it.

1st round of the playoffs, we played Smoky Mtn. The Mustangs came to play. Kannapolis was favored by 3 tds, but the Mustangs didn’t believe that. Brandon Franklin had an off night passing, but scored 3 tds rushing. Maurice Edwards had a great game rushing as did Calvin Bacon on defense. The Mustangs had a great game plan and almost pulled it off. The Wonders had to come from behind to win this one.

Second round……

Wonder season comes to an end at the hands of the Burns Bulldogs. Not much to say. The score was 42-7 at the half. The Bulldogs beat us in every phase of the game. K-town’s offense struggled and the defense was practically non-existent. The Wonders made a come-back in the second half to make it 42-13. Then Calvin Bacon took over at QB for the final 3 minutes and showed why he so highly regarded, running for one score and passing for another to make the final score 42-27. Best of luck to the Seniors. We will miss you!

2003 Season
Record...10-4
Players.. Senior QB Brandon Franklin(he had over 2500 yds. of offense in around 10 games last year), Senior RB Jonathan Peoples, Junior WR Josh Russell, and Senior RB, WR Artis Butler, and a great Offensive Line. Senior Jamil Weaks leads the defense, along with Sophomore LB Quantres Grant, Senior LB Andrew Baker, Senior LB Lee Garver, and Junior DL Travis Howie. We also have an excellent kicking game this year, with Junior Garrett Sherrill handling the kickoffs, extra pts. and field goals, and Senior Andrew Mead doing the punting.

The offensive line has been solid all year, but never get the credit they richly deserve. I will take this time to recognize them...

Great 2003 Season, WONDERS
The WONDERS end their season at the hands of the #1 ranked and undefeated Cougars of Asheville up at Cougar Stadium. They finish the season at a very respectable 10-4, and advanced to the 3rd round of the playoffs. I hate to see it end, but I'm already looking foward to next year. We will all miss these great Seniors on this team. May they all have rewarding futures in whatever they choose to do. I wish to thank the Coaching Staff for the great job they have done this season, and I, personally, hope they will all be back next year. The word going around is that next year's team might struggle a bit because of all the talent we're losing and not a lot coming up. But I don't buy into that kind of reasoning. The WONDERS are not going anywhere. We have found kids every year that will give their all to play WONDER Football, and next season will be no exception. WONDERS are TRADITION, and TRADITION will be back next season.
