For the Record
Comments… For the period, 1952-2009( that’s 57 yrs), A.L. Brown had 474 wins, 168 losses, and 19 ties. If I did my math right, that gives Brown a 73.8% winning percentage for the 57 yrs. I threw out the ties.

Some of the winning percentages from the Coaches with more than 10 yrs. as Head Coach:

Ed Edmiston 68% over 11 seasons
Bob Boswell 73% over 13 seasons
Bruce Hardin 83% over 11 seasons

Ron Massey is currently 108-30, a 78.3% winning percentage, into his 10th season..

Since 1978 through 2009(32 yrs.) Kannapolis has 326 wins, 77 losses, and 1 tie. That gives them a winning percentage of 81% for the 32 yrs. Bob Boswell and staff gets the credit for turning the program around. Bob got things on the winning side in his 3rd year at Brown, and the WONDERS have never looked back. He took the WONDERS to the 3A State Championship in 1984, but they lost to Tarboro. Bruce Hardin took over in 1989. He added a little more passing to the offense and took the WONDERS to 3 State Title Game appearances, winning 2(’89 & ’97) in his 11 years as Head Coach. Ron Massey took over as Head Coach in 2000, and finished his 10th season in 2009. He continues the WONDER TRADITION!!

Since 1978, Kannapolis has not had a losing season.

                                      LUG LEAZER AWARD

                                                                         LugLeazerTrophy
The Award is presented in memory of one of the most outstanding football players in Kannapolis gridiron history. Lug Leazer received the praise of his teamates, coaches, and rival players for his outstanding sportsmanship and ability. He was also a leader at school, serving as president of his Junior and Senior classes.

While playing for the Little WONDERS, Leazer served as captain in 1935 and was named to the All-South Piedmont Conference at a tackle post. He also made the all-conference squad during the 1934 campaign.

Among the other laurels to be gained by the hard-hitting tackle were selections to the all-state team in 1935 and being named a member of the North Carolina team for the 1935 Shrine Bowl football game in Charlotte.

After graduation from Kannapolis High, Leazer enrolled at Duke University and starred in football until he entered the Army Air Force during World War II. He served as a B-24 pilot. He was shot down while on a mission over Austria on June 26, 1944 and was declared dead one year later.

A group of his classmates and teamates then decided to give the Harold "Lug" Leazer Memorial Trophy each year to a Kannapolis football player in an effort to promote better sportsmanship.

The Leazer Award is the highest honor that can be paid to an athlete at Kannapolis. The winner is selected by his teamates for his outstanding leadership both on and off the field. There is a list of rules regarding the selection of the trophy winner. The list of rules are read to the members of the football team each year before they make their selection. The rules call for the player to be selected on the basis of his leadership, sportsmanship, and outstanding Christian virtues. The members of the football team vote by secret ballot and the winner is not named until the special assembly program each year.
