2003-2004 What a year! What a team!
What a Year! What a season! What a team! It all began in August of 2003, Kaieteur began their U12 campaign a bit worried as players went to “greener pastures” or found WAGS too competitive, leaving 13 players strong. It was a good news/bad news start as they won the Columbia Summer Classic tournament beating a division 2 team, at the cost of the ankle of a main. It was really a character build season, as we battled with 10, 11 or 12 players. With a lot of closes defeats and three ties, they never gave up. Then came Spring 2004, once again, we started the season with personnel problems, this time 14 players and our other main defenders in a knee brace. In addition, Kaieteur was plagued with recitals and other sports conflicts, but again hung tough and survived to finish 5th with a record of 4-4-1.
Game One was surprisingly hot –a sign of things to come- and wouldn't you know it, one player short and another limping with a sore toe, but this was not the reason for a 2-0 defeat, Kaieteur just played badly.
Games Two and three, The girls dominated play, only to lose late in the second half 1-0.
Game Four we found our stride as we in turn won 1-0 over a determined familiar team.
Game Five A heartbreaking lesson learnt, that is: It’s not over until the final whistle, with 7 seconds to go the other team scored.
Game Six No question, the girls were outplayed and lost 3-1.
Game Seven A truly unforgettable game. It looked like Kaieteur would begin a slide down the rankings as they faced a well coached team, division leaders and unbeaten, coupled with the fact that they lost to this team 4-0 earlier in the season at a tournament. But These determined athletic girls had other plans; it was a tough fought game to the bitter end, as they held on to win 1-0.
One week later in Game Eight They shocked the other unbeaten very physical team in a real battle. The team had a rep for being rough, and they were indeed and all very legal. I have never seen a team of girls this young use their bodies so well. The girls had size and knew how to use it as they hammered us, but we maintained our game and came out with a 2-1 win.
The Final Game was a must-win, if we wanted to stay in WAGS -the bottom five drops from division 5. It was such a treat as the girls put it all together and played a near perfect game winning 4-1. What a year! What a team!.
