Madden Joins Lafayette Class of 2013

July 15, 2009

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette head baseball coach Joe Kinney has announced 11 student-athletes will join the team this fall as members of the Class of 2013. The group consists of players from seven states, two countries and includes a player drafted by Major League Baseball.

Kevin Casey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace) joins the Leopards as a pitcher and infielder. He was a two-time all-conference, all-group, all-parochial and All-South Jersey player. The 6-0, 180-pound Casey was also a two-time Under Armour Preseason All-American and a 2008 Carpenter Cup participant. He finished with a career 23-7 record on the mound for Bishop Eustace, including nine wins in 2009, a season in which he also added nine homers.

Another New Jersey player, Thomas Dunleavy (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) is also a 2009 Under Armour Preseason All-American. The 5-10, 175 catcher/infielder was a 2008 and 2009 all-conference and all-county selection and served as team captain in 2009. Dunleavy was also a three-year varsity starter on South Brunswick's football team and a member of the National Honor Society.

Derek Gussaroff (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) is a 6-2, 185-pound righty who was an all-county and all-conference player at Cold Spring Harbor. He went 8-1 on the mound during his senior campaign and was an all-star mention by the NYSSWAA.

Florida native Brad Hopek (Stuart, Fla./Jensen Beach) joins fellow Jensen Beach graduate Matt Hall '10 on the roster. The 6-1, 175-pound Hopek, who is expected to play first base and outfield for the Leopards, was an all-conference player at Jensen Beach who tied Hall for the school record in home runs. During his senior season, Hopek also set school records in doubles (14) and total bases (69) while hitting for a .370 average. He was also a member of the National Spanish Honor Society.

Scott Kelleher (Farmington, Conn./Avon Old Farms School), an infielder, was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Avon Old Farms. The 6-3, 205-pound Kelleher played with Team Connecticut at the 2009 WWBA 18U National Championships. He served as team captain in 2009 and won the Connecticut AAU Scholarship Award as a senior.

Lefty Joe Leo (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) joins Lafayette following a successful career at Susquehanna. Named to the First-Team Mid-Penn Conference as a senior, the 5-11, 175-pound Leo served as team captain last spring and won the PIAA District 3 Sportsmanship Award. In 2008, his team advanced to the District 3 playoffs and Leo was named to the All-Patriot News Big 11 Team. Leo, who plans to major in Neuroscience, was a member of Susquehanna's National Honor Society.

Zane Madden (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) is a 5-10, 185-pound shortstop who was named the Ohio Valley 4A Player of the Year in 2009. He set a team record with a .602 batting average as a senior, which also earned him First-Team All-State honors. The Intelligencer named him co-captain of the All-Valley Baseball Team as well as an All-Valley honor roll member. The team captain also hit 10 homers in 2009, tied for the lead in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Michael Massa (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn), a 6-0, 185-pound pitcher and outfielder, was a three-time all-league player and was named the 2009 League Player of the Year, which followed his Pitcher of the Year honor in 2008. Massa was selected as an All-Long Island player following his senior campaign during which he boasted an 8-0 record as a pitcher. A two-sport athlete, Massa was also captain of the football team and earned all-conference and all-county honors during his career.

Catcher Alex Osuchowski (Draper, Utah/Jordan), who checks in a 6-1 and 185 pounds, was a two-time captain for Jordan. He earned First-Team All-Region honors following his senior season and was named Jordan's Offensive MVP. Osuchowski also participated in the 2008 Utah Prospect Game.

Lafayette will welcome its first-ever Canadian player in Andrew Ruck (Whitby, Ontario, Canada/Sinclair Secondary School). Ruck was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2009 Amateur Draft. The 5-11, 185-pound outfielder played three years with the Team Ontario-Provincial All-Star squad and was an All-Tournament player at the 2008 Canada Cup with Team Ontario, which won the gold medal. Ruck was also a member of Team Canada-18U Canadian Junior National and a participant at the Senior Sunbelt Classic in Norman, Okla. where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Rounding out the class is Corey Young (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold), a 6-0, 170-pound right hander who had a three-year varsity career at Ringgold. He was the WPIAL strikeout leader and set a Fayette County record with 23 strikeouts in a nine-inning game. Young, a National Honor Society member at Ringgold, was a 2008 Keystones Games participant.

The Leopards are coming off a 2009 season in which they advanced to the Patriot League championship series for the second time in three years. Three players also earned All-League honors as the team finished the spring with 24 victories.
