Juneau Douglas High School is located in Juneau,Alaska. The town is surrounded by stark mountains that jut straight out of the seas and glaciers that are iced with snow all year round.
Ironically, this breathtaking beauty creates the isolation that makes for one of the most unique high school football programs in the country. Juneau has no connecting roads and our nearest opponent is over 900 miles away! Where most teams travel by bus to opponents' home fields, the Bears hop on a plane and fly for one and a half hours or travel by ferry over the icy Inland Passage.
Population
Juneau is Alaska's capitol city. There are about 31,000 people here. Of those, about 1,750 are students at the high schoool in grades 9-12.
Pay to Play
The JDHS football program is unlike most other high school teams. The team is sanctioned by the Juneau School District but does not receive any financial support from the District. All funding is provided through grants and fund raising activities done through the Juneau Youth Football League.
Raising money to play football is no small task. Our nearest conference opponents are in Anchorage, a 1.5 hour plane ride away. This requires a travel budget of nearly $170,000. Players and families must pay a $395.00 registration to play. Players also put in hours doing "Chore Busters", a fund raiser where players do chores in exchange for a donation to JYFL. They must also sell $750 in program advertisements and $500 in raffle tickets.
