Patriots dominate Capitol City Kiwanis Tournament
Ricky Villers had a no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth with two outs before a blooper down the left field line snuck inside the white foul line and just out of the reach of a diving Jace Guidry. The good news is that the Patriots dominated yet another game with a convincing 10-0 victory of Catholic High of New Iberia in the championship game of the Capitol City Kiwanis tournament at Alex Box Stadium. Once again the defense was outstanding. The Patriots had very timely hitting, scoring a lot of runs with two outs and driving base runners that were in position. Villers also has Curtis' first home run of the season...sort of. Villers hit a blistering line drive to that rolled all the way to the 405 mark in right center field. He made it home uncontested and got an inside the park home run. Chad Fabacher probably had the biggest hit of the game. With the Patriots leading 3-0 in the top of the third and runners on second and third, Fabacher found himself in a two strike hole. After battling he hit a double to right center field to give the Patriots some breathing room. Another couple of hits and runs scored the Patriots then led 8-0 after three innings and blew the game open. They walked away from the tournament 3-0 and outscored the opponents 37-0 for the weekend. The Patriots will again be in action Tuesday night at Mike Miley against Riverside.
Rebels hand Curtis first loss
The Riverside Rebels swung a very hot bat and got hot pitching dispite frigid temperatures Tuesday afternoon at Mike Miley. Mike Snyder's run home run was the only bright spot offensively, as the Patriots could never muster any type of rally against the Rebels. The final score was 8-2. The Patriots will be back in action this weekend in the Hannan Tournament.
Patriots dominate Cavaliers
After falling for the first time Tuesday, the Patriots bounced back with a convincing win over the DeLaSalle Cavaliers Saturday with a 13-0 victory. Chris Bua (2-0) took the win for the Patriots on the mound, while giving up only 2 hits. A bunch of Patriot hitters had multi-hit games en route to a convincing victory.
Offense comes alive against Hannan
Casey Slattery, Dave Lauricella and Cody Dimak all hit home runs Saturday in the second game of the Hannan tournament in a rain shortened 5-inning game. Aaron McKenzie got the win on the mound for the Patriots, who won 8-3. Slattery was 3-3 for the Patriots with a home run, a double and a single and also had 4 RBI's. The win moves the Patriots to 6-1 on the season and drops the Hawks to 5-3.
Come from behind victory for the Patriots
After trailing 3-0 through three innings, the Patriots battled back to beat DeLaSalle 6-3 on a very cold night Monday. Behind Ricky Villers' 3-hit, 16 strike out performance on the mound, the Patriots never seemed to be out of the game. Trailing 3-2 in the fourth inning with a runner on second and an 0-2 count, Casey Slattery lined a base hit up the middle that tied the score. Chris Jackson also had a 3-hit game, as the Patriots tacked on three more runs to finish the Cavs off. The Patriots will be back in action Friday night at 6:30 against St. Paul's at Miley in the Curtis Tournament.

Patriots go 3-1 in Optimist Challenge at Segnette Field

The Patriots, behing the pitching of Chris Bua, shutout the West Jefferson Bucs 11-0 in five innings Thursday night. The offense continued to roll on Sunday and the Patriots beat Bartlett, TN. 12-8. Overall the Patriots were the co-champions of the tournament with a 3-1 record.
Bua blanks St. Charles 4-0
Chris Bua's only trouble of the day came in the first inning. With the bases loaded and none out, Chris induced a pop up to right field and Ricky Villers proceeded to double off the runner tagging and trying to score. Chris got out of the jam giving up zero runs. Chad Fabacher got his first homer of the season and gave Chris all he would need. Jason Spadoni also had a 2 hit day on offense for the Patriots.
Easy win in district opener for the Patriots
The Patriots pounded the Carver Rams in the district opener 25-1 behind the pitching of Aaron McKenzie and numerous Patriot hitters. Cody Dimak smacked 2 home runs for the Patriots and was 4-4. The Patriots had many hits and RBI's in the district opener.
Curtis whips district foes Ben Franklin and Karr
The Patriots beat up on the Ben Franklin Falcons and the Karr Cougars in two district contests. With a forfeit by the Clark Bulldogs, the Patriots district record stands at 4-0 with one game remaining in the first round against O.P. Walker.
Patriots split with Neville in double-header
It was a much anticipated match up between the Neville Tigers and the John Curtis Patriots at Bonnabel Stadium Saturday. Neither team disappointed and both lived up to the #1 and #2 rankings. The Patriots took the first game 2-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Chris Bua who went 7 2/3 innings. James Brewer came in with the score 1-0 and Neville leading and got the last out. Then the Patriots scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the come from behind victory. Drama would also take place in the second game, this time it would belong to the visiting Tigers. Neville trailed 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning. The Patriots seemed in control of the game as sophomore Cody Dimak kept the Tigers off balance for most of the game. Then the Patriots lost their focus and the Tigers roared back. Behind a couple of hits and a couple of mis-played balls in the outfield, the Tigers scored five runs in the top of the seventh to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead. The Patriots threatened in the bottom of the inning but got thrown out at the plate on a sacrifice fly attempt hit by Mike Snyder. Then Casey Slattery hit a scorching ground ball to end the game. It was a well played game between two great teams. Thanks to all of the Neville fans that came down and attended the games.

First Round Shut-Out propels JC to rematch with Morgan City
Ricky Villers and Aaron McKenzie pitched the Patriots into the second round of the playoffs with an impressive 4-hit shutout. The defense was outstanding for Villers, who pitched six innings, and McKenzie. The offense provided all it needed with a three run second inning. The Patriots also pushed across two in the fourth and two in the fifth to round out the scoring. Base hits were at a premium all day as the wind at Mike Miley Stadium was blowing in all day and got pretty stiff at times. The win sets up a rematch and perennial playoff favorites Morgan City. Morgan City beat the Patriots 9-4 earlier this year in a tournament. Click headline for the Times-Picayune article.
Big sixth inning propels Patriots
Morgan City pretty much held the Patriots in check for five innigns Tuesday night at Mike Miley Stadium in the Regional round of the playoffs. In the fifth, trailing 3-0, the Patriots scored 2 unearned runs to cut the lead to 3-2. Going into the sixth the Patriots had all of the momentum. Chris Bua, who pitched six innings of five hit ball, got the Patriots back in the dugout with a 1-2-3 inning. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots broke out the sticks. Bua led of the inning getting hit by a pitch. Then, Cody Dimak's sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a great bunt and the throw pulled the first baseman off of the bag as Cody touched first safely. Chad Fabacher then bunted both runners over. Then, the biggest hit of the game came via 9-hole hitter, Ricky Villers. His 2 RBI's put the Patriots up for good. But, the Patriots were not done. Mike Snyder squeezed Villers in from third and everyone was safe. Jason Spadoni walked in a run and Chris Bua put the icing on the cake by smacking a 3 run double to left for a 9-3 lead. Cody Dimak then came on in relief of Bua after 2 batters reached base. Dimak struck two out and the Patriots advance to the next round to take on Live Oak. Lafayette...here we come!
With the Patriots in a quick 2-0 hole to the Live Oak Eagles and the Live Oak ace cruising, the bottom of the lineup set the table for the Patriots. In the third inning, 8-hole Chad Fabacher led off with a single to right field. Then 9-hole, pitcher Ricky Villers laced a double down the left field line setting the table for the top of the order. Leadoff Chris Jackson came through with a two run double and later scored on a passed ball. Fabacher then had an RBI in the fourth to push the Patriots lead to 4-2. To finish up the scoring for the Patriots in the fifth Villers again got a double. After 2 walks, Casey Slattery produced a 2 RBI single and Jason Spadoni came throught with a 2 RBI double for an 8-2 lead. Villers held the Eagles in check until Live Oak loaded the bases with 2 outs in the sixth. Aaron McKenzie came on and promptly ended the threat with a grounder to Dave Lauricella at third base. The Eagles got 2 unearned runs in the seventh, but would not figure into the outcome of the game as the Patriots advance to the Semi-Finals in Lafayette. The Semi's and the Finals will be held in the same park; Fabacher Field. The Patriots will be in action against Breaux Bridge on Thursday night at 8:00. The State Championship game will be at 7:00 on Friday. Click the headline for the Times-Picayune article.
Walk off Grand Slam sends Patriots to the State Championship
Jason Spadoni and the rest of the 2002 seniors did not want the season to end yet. So, in the bottom of the seventh down by two runs, they were able to prolong their season by one more game. And they did it in dramatic fashion. The Breaux Bridge Tigers were a formidible opponent nearly eliminated the Patriots from the playoffs by opening the scoring in the top of the first with an unearned run. The Patriots would counter that score with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second with a Jason Spadoni base hit, a hit by pitch by Chad Fabacher and Ricky Villers triple to right center. The score would remain the same until the Tigers got two runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Then Chris Jackson knotted the score at 3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the same inning. Then a two run triple by the Tigers in the top of the sixth pushed the Tigers back in front 5-3. The Patriots went quietly in the bottom of the sixth and Villers came on in relief of Bua and pitched a scoreless top half of the seventh. Then some drama unfolded. Nine hole hitter Ricky Villers led off the bottom half of the seventh for the Patriots. After quickly falling behind in an 0-2 hole, the senior lefthander battled and battled his way back to a 3-2 count. He then battled some more and forced a walk. Leadoff hitter Chris Jackson stepped to the plate, who homered in his last at bat, and promptly laced a double to the right center gap scoring Villers to cut the deficit to one at 5-4. Lauricella popped out to right sending Mike Snyder to the plate. Snyder got a 3-1 count and then drew a walk. Clean up Casey Slattery was up to bat with the tying run on second and winning courtesy runner Mike Krajcer on first. Slattery fell into a 1-2 hole and was fighting for his senior year. He fouled off four pitches including two wicked breaking balls by Breaux Bridge pitcher Josh Collette. Eventually Slattery would win the battle by drawing yet another walk. Now, the bases were loaded full of Patriots with Jace Guidry coming on to run for Slattery at first. Jason Spadoni stepped to the plate trying to extend his Patriot career by one game with a base hit. He did it better, sending a rocket to left center field for a no-doubter grand slam. As soon as the ball left the bat, the whole crowd, players and coaches knew the outcome of the game. Patriots 8 Tigers 5!!! What a job by the Patriots, who now move on to play in the State Championship. Click the headline for the Times-Picayune article.
STATE CHAMPS!!!
What a way to go out!!! The John Curtis Patriots capped off a 33-3 season by defeating the DeRidder Dragons 9-5 before a standing room only crowd at Fabacher Field in Lafayette. The Patriots did not need the drama they needed Thursday night, but DeRidder battled the Patriots until the final out was recorded. The Patriots quickly took control of the game by capitilizing on the Dragons' nervousness, good baserunning and timely hitting. After one complete inning the Patriots led 3-0. The Dragons would then capitalize on Patriot errors in the third by scoring two runs on four Patriot errors on just one hit to cut the lead to 3-2. Ricky Villers did the pitching and was in control for a majority of the game. Then the biggest blows of the game came in the Patriots top half of the fifth inning. Chris Jackson and Dave Lauricella led off with two sharply hit base hits to put runners on first and second. Catcher Mike Snyder then laced a base hit to left center to score Jackson and send Lauricella to third, as Snyder took second on the throw. Casey Slatter then stepped to the plate and delivered a 2 RBI base hit to right field scoring Lauricella and Snyder's courtesy runner Mike Krajcer. Jason Spadoni reached base by beating out an infield hit. Spadoni and Slattery move up to second and third on a Chris Bua sac bund and Cody Dimak ripped a 2 RBI base hit to give the Patriots an 8-2 cushion. The Dragons did not go away quietly though. Following a walk, Bryan Broussard hit a double to right center for and RBI cutting the lead to 8-3. Then pinch hitter Marcus Scott hit an RBI triple and later scored on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to three runs, 8-5. The Patriots answered the bell in the top of the seventh gaining one more run on Spadoni's RBI base hit off of DeRidder ace Josh Rainwater who pitched 126 pitches the night before to defeat ASH. In the bottom of the seventh Villers pitched to his last batter in a Patriot uniform. He walked the leadoff batter, but left the mound a proud Patriot! He scattered six hits and gave up five runs with only 2 being earned in six complete innings. He gave way to the Patriots' closer Aaron McKenzie. McKenzie came on and promptly SLAMMED the door. The first two batters he faced, grounded into fielder's choices. Then the last batter and last gasp for the Dragons went down swinging as Aaron zipped a low fastball right past the swinging batter. Then the celebration erupted!!! The 2002 4A state champions were crowned and the season was over. Fans, friends, parents and alumni poured onto the field to give their hugs, handshakes and kisses to coaches and players alike. What a game, what a season, WHAT A TEAM!!! We are so very proud of our PATRIOTS!! Click on the headline to see the Times-Picayune article

Krajcer and Naquin hold Slidell in check...
Mike Krajcer and Troy Naquin limited the powerful Slidell Tigers to just 4 base hits in 8 innings in a big non-district game at Slidell High Monday morning. Troy Naquin, in relief of Krajcer (who pitched 6 innings), pitched 2 perfect innings of relief and got the Tigers in order in the 7th and 8th innings. The Patriots move to 5-0 on the season and will be back in action Thursday afternoon in the Hannan Tournament.

Curtis off to a 10-0 start with 2-1 victory over Holy Cross
Pitching and defense...you must have them. As much offense as the Patriots have provided so far this year, it was only a matter of time before the pitching and defense was tested. The Patriots not only passed, but aced the test. Marc Bienvenu threw a one-hitter and the defense played errorless baseball Tuesday afternoon at Holy Cross' Tiger Diamond. Cody Dimak's solo home run tied the score at 1 in the fifth inning for the Patriots. It was also an unlikely person who stepped up in a pinch hitting role. Matt Schultheis stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh and got the rally started for the Patriots with a line drive base hit up the middle. Jacob Hastings who came on to run for Schultheis scored on a bloop, misplayed popup by Chris Jackson to score the deciding run of the game. The Patriots will be back in action again in the Curtis tournament Thursday night at 7:00 at Miley against Salmen. Click the above link for the Times-Picayune article of the game.

11 runs put Patriots in 2nd round of the playoffs
The John Curtis Patriots came out swinging a hot bat Thursday night at Segnette Field in the opening round of the 2003 playoffs. The Patriots scored four in the first behind a Jace Guidry hit, a Mike Snyder walk, a 2 RBI double by Cody Dimak, and RBI base hits by Marc Bienvenu and Troy Naquin. Then in the second it was Guidry starting things off again, this time with a hit by pitch. Snyder followed with a double and Cody Dimak followed that with another 2 RBI double. Marc Bienvenu had another RBI on a base hit and Troy Naquin got an RBI on a squeeze play. In the third, Chris Jackson led off with a double and Snyder hit him in with a base hit and 2 more runs came around to score on passed balls. Cody Dimak pitched 4 innings of no hit ball and Mike Krajcer, James Brewer and Chris Bua each came in and pitched some relief. The Patriots will be back in action Tuesday against Morgan City at Mike Miley for 6:00. See you there!
7th inning rally keeps Patriots alive
With elimination staring them straight in the face Tuesday night, the Patriots stepped up in the bottom of the seventh and moved on to the quarter-final round in dramatic fashion. The Patriots were able to overcome a 4-0 deficit for a 5-4 victory. The Patriots trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the 3rd when Morgan City collected 4 infield hits and a SAC fly. The lead would only wake the Patriots up as they scored 3 runs in its half of the third. Troy Naquin led off the inning with a double and moved to third on Tony Surarez' ground out. Chris Jackson followed with an RBI double and scored when he stole third and the catcher threw the ball away. Jace Guidry then walked and back to back hits by Mike Snyder and Cody Dimak gave the Patriots its third run. No one would score again until the 7th. Chris Bua picked up his 8th win on the season going the distance for the Patriots. In the 7th down 4-3, Jackson led off with a double to right field. He moved to 3rd on Guidry's ground out. Mike Snyder then hit a blooper to shallow right field. With the infield in, the second baseman retreated but could not come up with the catch, scoring Jackson from 3rd. Dustin Gilmore came on to run for Snyder and on the first pitch stole second. Simultaneously, Dimak hit a high chopper over the first baseman's head into right field. Gilmore went to 3rd and had a hard round. The right fielder, trying to avoid mistake, lobbed the ball in and Gilmore raced home for the deciding run. PATRIOTS WIN, PATRIOTS WIN!!!! Wow, what a game. The Patriots move on to face Parkway in the quarter finals in Shreveport Friday at 5:00. Stay tuned for more drama as the Patriots inch closer to their goal.

Another heart pounding game in the playoffs for the Patriots. This time the Patriots had to cling to a 1 run lead in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. The Panthers would get on the board in the first inning behind a hit and an infield error to gain a 1-0 advantage over the visiting Patriots. In the top of the 4th the Patriots countered with 2 runs of their own to gain their 1 run advantage. James Brewer led it off with a scorching line drive off the left center field fence for a long single. Marc Bienvenu then came up and belted a double to left center field to score Brewer and tie the game at 1. Troy Naquin bunter Bienvenu to third. Then, as the pitcher started his windup to home, Bienvenu sprinted for home. Bienvenu slid under the tag of the catcher and successfully stole home for a 2-1 Patriot advantage. The Panthers then countered with a 2 base hits and an outfield error to regain the lead at 3-2. In top of the fifth the Patriots knotted the score up at 3 with a walk to Cody Dimak, who pitched 5 innings for the Patriots, a base hit by Brewer, and an RBI base hit by Chris Bua. Things got a little scary for the Patriots in the bottom of the fifth. After recording the first out on a line drive to center, the second hole hitter for the Panthers came about 3 feet short of giving them the lead back, instead the ball hit the fence and fell to the ground for a double. After a wild pitch and a walk, the Panthers had 1st and 3rd with one out and their four hole hitter up. After a battle of wills, the hitter finally grounded a 3-2 pitch to Naquin at 2nd which started a 4-6-3 double play and the Patriots avoided danger. In the top of the sixth, Coach Johnny Curtis inserted Dustin Gilmore into the lineup to leadoff and pinch hit for the Patriots. Gilmore then deposited a 1-1 pitch just to the left of dead center for the game winning RBI home run. James Brewer (W 8-0) came on in the bottom of the sixth in relief of Dimak and got a 1-2-3 inning. The Patriots couldn't extend their one run lead in the top half of the seventh. Brewer then gave up a leadoff single to the 8-hole batter and threw 2 straight balls to the nine hole. Chris Bua (S 4) came on in relief of Brewer and eventually walked the nine hole. 1st and 2nd nobody out with the top of the lineup coming up. The first pitch to the batter never reached him as Chris Bua tried a pickoff at second and Chris Jackson applied the tag to get a HUGE out. One down, runner on first, leadoff batter up. On the next pitch, which was a ball, the runner broke for second and Mike Snyder came up with a bullet to throw the runner out as Jackson again applied the tag for the second out. Nobody on, two out, leadoff still up. Bua then threw two more balls and walked the leadoff batter. Bua then struck the 2-hole batter out to end the game. Ballgame over, see you in Lafayette at Fabacher field for the semi-finals! Click the above headline for the Shreveport Times' article on the game.
Dream season comes to an end with 4-3 loss in semi-finals
 | | | | 2003 State Semi-Finalists |
The 2003 John Curtis Patriots finished the season at 35-2 as the season ended Thursday night in Lafayette's Fabacher Field. The loss ended the careers of 9 Patriot seniors. A big "thanks" go out to them and their parents and families. They are: Chris Jackson, Chris Bua, James Brewer, Mike Krajcer, Tony Suarez, Jacob Hastings, Marc Bienvenu, Jace Guidry and Mike Snyder. You guys had an unbelievable season and career; 68-5 over the last two prep seasons and also the state legion tournament. You've accomplished a lot of things and even though it's hard, the sun came up today and it's beautiful!
On to the game...
The Westgate Tigers scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings for a 4-3 victory over the Patriots in the semi-finals. The first run came on a double by Dustin Clay and an RBI single by Xavier Alexander to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead off starting pitcher Mike Krajcer. In the third, a base hit by Tyson Trahan and a double past a diving James Brewer in right by Jacques Pierre gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Then the Patriots began their move. Troy Naquin led off with a base hit to right. After a failed SAC bunt attempt by Tony Suarez, Chris Jackson laced a triple to right center field scoring Naquin from first. Jace Guidry's SAC fly to right knotted the score at 2 as Jackson scored from third. The Tigers scored a run in the fifth as Trahan walked, got balked to second and scored on a wild pitch from relief pitcher James Brewer giving the lead to the Tigers at 3-2. The Patriots again answered in the fifth with a base hit by Jackson and a throwing error allowed him to get to third. Jackson then stole third and Jace Guidry's infield hit scored Jackson again evening up the score at 3. In the sixth, Brewer walked Jordy Hill and gave up a base hit to Kyle Latiolais, after striking out the leadoff batter in the inning. Brewer coaxed a soft ground ball to third baseman Mike McCormack who fed Troy Naquin. This was just what the doctor ordered for the Pariots, an inning ending double play, but...the throw was slightly wide and Cody Dimak couldn't come up with the ball at first. On the overthrow the lead runner at second came around third as Dimak's throw was a touch late to the plate as Hill scored from second on the play. Eventually, the Patriots got the batter, who was trying to advance to third on the play, out and was out of the inning. The Patriots went three up and three down in the sixth and Chris Bua kept the Tigers scoreless in the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, it was do or die for the Patriots. Chris Bua led the inning off and hit a DEEP fly ball to the warning track in dead center field, which was 395. If the fly ball is in either gap or either line, it is a no-doubt home run, but...such is baseball and it was nothing but a noisy out. Marc Bienvenu hit a slow infield ground ball to short and appeared to be safe at first, but was rung up by the first base umpire for the second out...such is baseball. Curtis' last hope was a pinch hitting Dustin Gilmore, who had a game winning home run last week against Parkway. Gilmore battled to a 2-2 count and seemed to be in control of the at-bat. A called third strike on an inside fastball, as Gilmore moved out of the way of the ball because he thought it was going to hit him, ended the game and the season for the 2003 Patriots...such is baseball.
The faculty, administration, students, families and staff at John Curtis Christian could not be any more proud of "our" PATRIOTS. We appreciate all that you've done for the school and all of your hard work. Now it's time to go "back to work" and get ready for the 2004 season. Thanks fellas!

After all the rain...Patriots finally play season opener
The season opener was suppossed to be againset the St. Paul's Wolves. Then the rain came. Up next was the Shaw Eagles...then again, rain. Finally, the Patriots played Ellender in the season opener on a cold and drizzly afternoon at Alario Center's Segnette Field in the opening game of the Shaw Tournament. The Patriots belted 14 hits and scored 10 runs in five innings as they slugged their way past the Patriots of Ellender. Dustin Gilmore had 3 of those RBI's along with a double and 2 other base hits. Blake Couch, Cody Dimak, Devin Joseph and Korey Carter each had 2 his to fuel the Patriots offense. Mike Cormack picked up the team's first victory of the season pitching 4 hitless and scoreless innings. Sophomore Stephen Arbrough pitched the fifth inning and gave up one double, but did not surrernder a run. The Patriots will be in action again tomorrow against another Patriot team. This time it will be against the Ehret Patriots.
Curtis defeats Ehret...improves to 2-0
The Patriots defeated the Ellender Patriots yesterday and today they disposed of the John Ehret Patriots 7-3 at Ehret's field. Dustin Gilmore pitched 5 strong innings, yielding just 2 hits and 0 runs. Devin Joseph had 3 hits and Dustin Gilmore and Mike McCormack each had 2 hits and 2 RBI's. The Patriots will play in their third game of the Shaw Tournament Saturday at 3:00 against Jesuit at Shaw's field on the Westbank. We hope to see you their!
Patriots tie Shaw 3-3; lose to Jesuit 6-4
In game 3 of the Shaw Tournament, the Patriots faced the Jesuit Blue Jays in what seemed to be an exciting match up. Neither team disappointed. The Patriots jumped out to early leads of 2-0 and 3-1 behind a Matt Schultheis home run. Then the Jays put up a five spot for a 6-3 advantage. The Patriots pushed another run across in the sixth to make it 6-4. In the seventh Jarrod Fabacher lead off with a base hit, but would get no further. In the Tournament's final game, the host team Shaw Eagles battled the Patriots. This game would not be short on excitement either. After numerous hits and defensive plays, the Patriots got on the board first in the fourth inning when Dustin Gilmore laced and RBI double. Then in the bottom of the same inning Shaw pushed across 2 runs of their own and added a run in the fifth for a 3-1 lead. The Patriots then got a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh for the 3-3 tie. The game did not go into extra innings due to darkness, as Shaw's home field did not have any lights. If you haven't seen the Patriots play yet this season, come on out and watch some exciting baseball. This young team is growing up quickly and should be very fun to watch.
Bad inning dooms Patriots...
After a see-saw battle, the score was 6-5 Hahnville entering the bottom of the fifth inning. Dustin Gilmore came on in relief of Mike McCormack and walked the first two batters of the inning. Then Blake Couch came in and walked the next three, forcing in a run. Finally Stephen Arbrough came in and struck the side out after a base hit and a walk. The tigers then led 9-5 and the Patriots could not get anything going on offense after that. The walks completely deflated the Patriots giving them their second loss of the season. Hahnville added a run in the sixth as they won 10-5. The Patriots need to rebound this weekend, but it will be difficult as they play in the Hannan Invitational and take on three good teams.
Patriots go 2-1 in Hannan Tournament
The Patriots defeated DeLaSalle 8-4 Thursday afternoon at Archbishop Hannan's Hawk Field. Dustin Gilmore pitched 6 1/3 innings to lead the way for the Patriots. Saturday afternoon the Patriots took on Archbishop Shaw. In their last meeting the Eagles and the Patriots battled to a 3-3 tie as daylight ran out on them at the Eagle's home field. This time it took 11 innings to break a 2-2 tie. In the bottom of the eleventh after two hits, two outs and a walk, Blake Couch was plunked with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the winning run and a 3-2 Patriot victory. It was the Eagles' first loss of the season. Then in the nightcap, the Patriots faced the homestanding Hannan Hawks. The Patriots kept it close through three and a half innings as the Hawks led 3-2. Then the weariness showed as the Hawks won 8-2. The Patriots will be back in action Tuesday at Holy Cross.
Patriots whip Hammond; beat St. Paul's in extra's
Thursday afternoon, the Patriots beat the Hammond Tors 10-0 in a 5 inning game due to the 10 run rule. Cody Dimak won his first decision of the year by shutting out the Tors. Jarrod Fabacher hit his first career varsity home run and added another 2 hits to give him a 3 hit, 2 RBI night. Mike McCormack also had a three hit night for the Patriots and Troy Naquin added another 2 hits. Friday afternoon, the Patriots won a pitching/defensive duel. Devin Joseph came on in relief of Dustin Gilmore in the 8th inning to get the victory for the Patriots. Dustin pitched excellently as did the pitcher for St. Paul's. The Patriots won 2-1 in 8 innings and will be back in action tomorrow at Harahan at 2:30.
Salmen holds off Curtis 5-4
The Patriots trailed 5-1 after 2 innings to the Salmen Spartans in Saturday's game of the Curtis tournament. But, the Patriots scored 2 in the third and one in the fifth to close the gap to 5-4. In a shortened game due to the time limit of the tournament only 6 innings were played and the Patriots could not get the tying or winning run to cross the plate. However, they did get someone in position. Korey Carter got a two out hit in the bottom of the last and stole second. After battling to a 3-2 count and fouling off three two strike pitches, Jarrod Fabacher struck out swinging to end the game. Troy Naquin took the loss for the Patriots on the mound. The Patriots will play again Tuesday at Harahan against Fisher.
Patriots rebound in a big way against Fisher 19-0
The Patriots answered the Salmen loss in a big way Tuesday afternoon against the Fisher Gators, winning 19-0. The Patriots scored 12 first inning alone. Troy Naquin led all batters with three hits, three runs and an RBI. Josh Medley added two hits, three runs and an RBI. Korey Carter and Dustin Gilmore added 2 RBI's each. Devin Joseph (3-1) got the victory on the mound for the Patriots. The Patriots will be in a rematch Thursday night against the Salmen Spartans in the first game of the Optimist Challenge at the Alario Center's Segnette Field.
Patriots reverse score, beat Salmen 5-4
The Patriots scored 2 runs in the fifth on a Cody Dimak 2 RBI double to give them the victory over the Salmen Spartans at Segnette Field in the opening game of the Optimist Challenge. Dustin Gilmore pitched 6 2/3 innings and Troy Naquin coaxed a game inning pitcher-to-catcher-to-first double play to record the final 2 outs. Naquin also had 2 hits to lead the Patriot offensive attack. Tomorrow the Patriots will face the St. Amant Gators in the second game of the Optimist Challenge at Segnette Field at the Alario Center.
Another come from behind victory for the Patriots
Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the last inning, Jarrod Fabacher and Troy Naquin both got base hits for the Patriots, followed by Korey Carter's sacrifice bunt to move them to second and third. Dustin Gilmore, who had 3 hits on the night, stepped to the plate and hit a scorching ground ball to the St. Amant shortstop's left. When the shortstop looked up, Gilmore was blazing down the first base line attempting to beat the play out. The speed of Gilmore forced the shortstop to make a low throw and the first baseman couldn't make the stop to score Naquin from second with the winning run. Cody Dimak picked up the win for the Patriots. Dimak struck out 10 St. Amant batters. Gilmore, Naquin and Fabacher led the way offensively for the Patriots. Naquin and Fabacher had 2 hits each and Josh Medley started a fifth inning rally, leading the bottom of the fifth off with a pinch hit double. The Patriots play again tomorrow against the Rummel Raiders at 1:00, at Segnette Field at the Alario Center.
Offense erupts...cruises past the Rummel Raiders
The John Curtis Patriot offense erupted for 14 hits and 9 runs against the Rummel Raiders Saturday afternoon in the Optimist Challenge. The offense was steady all game as they scored one in the first, two in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Cody Dimak and Dustin Gilmore each had three hits, and Dimak also had 3 RBI's. Blake Couch also pitched in with 2 hits and an RBI. Everytime the Raiders scored, the Patriots seemed to have an answer of their own. Troy Naquin pitched into the seventh inning for the Patriots and Mike McCormack came in to seal the deal and pick up the save. Tomorrow the Patriots will face off against the Archbishop Shaw Eagles in the Tournament finale. Both teams are 3-0 in the tournament.
Patriots can't claw back enough against Eagles
The Patrtiots tried, but came up a couple of runs short in the last game of the Optimist Challenge against the Shaw Eagles. Facing a 5-0 hole in the fourth inning, the Patriots got on the board with 3 runs in that inning behind 4 hits and a sacrifice fly by Josh Medley. Shaw answered with a run in the fourth, as did the Patriots with a run of their own in the fifth to make the score 6-4. The Patriots threatened in the seventh. Jarrod Fabacher led off the inning with a chopper to the third baseman's left. He couldn't glove it and the Patriots had a leadoff runner on first. After bluffing a steal, both the shortstop and second baseman broke to the bag. The problem was, Troy Naquin hit it right back up the middle, right to the shortstop covering second on the steal attempt. He then turned the double play. However, the Patriots had one more out. Korey Carter walked and Dustin Gilmore got a base hit to put the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate. The run could not be brought across after the last batter grounded out to end the game. Gilmore had 3 hits and 2 RBI's to lead the Patriot offensive attack. Devin Joseph took the loss on the mound and Mike McCormack pitched 2 hitless, scoreless innings after inheriting runners on second and third with nobody out in the sixth. The Patriots will be back in action Tuesday at Harahan against Brusly in a non-district contest.
Patriots add two wins this week
The John Curtis Patriots added two wins this week to move their record to 13-5-1 with a victory Tuesday over Brusly and Thursday over St. Charles. In Tuesday's contest, Dustin Gilmore (4-0) scattered 4 hits and struck out 5 in a 2-1 victory for the Patriots. Gilmore also had 2 hits for the Patriots, as did Blake Couch, Josh Medley and Mike McCormack. McCormack also hit his first home run of the season. In Thursday's game at St. Charles, Cody Dimak (3-0) also scattered 4 hits and the Patriot defense didn't have any errors as the Patriots won 6-1 over the Comets. Dimak helped his cause with 2 hits and an RBI. Gilmore, Troy Naquin and Jarrod Fabacher also added 2 hits each for the visiting Patriots. The Patriots take a much needed rest this weekend as they prepare for district next week. The Patriots open district up next Tuesday, as they travel to Houma to face off against the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers.
District opener goes sour for the Patriots
The Patriot offense was virtually non-existant Tuesday night at Vandebilt Catholic's Kennel. The Patriots dropped their district opener 2-1 with Troy Naquin taking the loss for the Patriots on the mound. The only bright spot offensively for the Patriots came from 7 hole hitter Devin Joseph, who was 2-3. The top of the order struggled all night long as the 1-6 hitters were a combined 1-19, with that lone hit coming in the first inning. The Patriots threatened in the seventh. After two one out walks, leadoff hitter Naquin, ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play to give the Patriots their first district loss in 14 years. The Patriots last lost a district game in 1990 against Lutcher 4-3. The Patriots will be on the road again Thursday at South Terrebonne's Swamp.
Bounce back game for the offense; whip Gators 16-1
The Patriots got the offense going Thursday afternoon at the Swamp on the campus of South Terrebonne, scoring 1 in the first, 2 in the second, 10 in the third, two in the fourth and 1 in the fifth. Cody Dimak picked up his fourth win of the season, yielding one run and just two hits. Dimak and Jarrod Fabacher led the way with two hits each for the Patriot offense. The win, puts the Patriots in second place in district (1-1) with seven games remaining. The Patriots will not be back in action again until next Tuesday. They will square off against the Assumption Mustangs at Harahan.
Gilmore pitches Patriots by Assumption for 2nd district win
Dustin Gilmore pitched 6 strong innings for the Patriots to give them a 2-1 district victory over the Assumption Mustangs. Josh Medley was the lone bright spot on offense for the Patriots going 2-2 with 2 doubles. The Patriots scored a run in the second and a run in the fifth for the victory. Troy Naquin came in to pitch the seventh after Gilmore gave up a leadoff hit in the seventh. A bunt attempt was foiled after Naquin fielded it and threw to third to get the lead runner for the first out of the inning after he issued a walk. Then a soft line drive was hit to Gilmore at shortstop and Gilmore flipped it to Fabacher at second before the runner could get back for a game ending double play. A critical district game against unbeaten Vandebilt Catholic will be played Thursday at Harahan. The Patriots will try to avenge their only district loss versus the Terriers. We hope to see you there.
Dimak's 4 hitter, Naquin's game winning hit propel Patriots
Cody Dimak gave up 2 runs, but gave up just 4 hits to earn his fifth win of the season. The victory over Vandebilt Catholic moves Curtis into a first place tie with the Terriers at 3-1 with five games remaining. The Patriots got the offense started early scoring a run in the first inning behind four hits. In the third Dustin Gilmore drove in the Patriots second run on a 2 out double down the left field line to score Troy Naquin from second. The Terries closed the gap to 2-1 in the fourth with a hit, 2 wild pitches and a fielder's choice groundout. Dimak then pitched himself into trouble in the fifth walking in a run to tie the score at 2. Evened up in the seventh, the Terriers led off the inning with 1-2-3 up. The leadoff hitter reached after Dimak made an error on a swinging bunt. The two hole sac bunted the leadoff runner into scoring position for the Terriers. A shallow fly to right kept the runner at second, and the four hole walked to put runners on first and second with two out. The Terriers brought up their five hole hitter who hit a mammoth fly ball to center, but came about five feet from an extra base hit, as Korey Cartr hauled in the fly ball for the third out. In the bottom of the inning the Patriots brought 8-9-1 to the plate. Devin Joseph led off the inning and ran the count full, fouled off a couple of pitches, then coaxed a walk. Korey Carter sac bunted Devin to second. Then senior Troy Naquin ended the game with a sharp single over the shortstop's head into left center to drive Joseph in for the winning run. The Patriots take Easter weekend off and will face South Terrebonne Tuesday afternoon at Harahan.
Patriots improve to 4-1 in district with victory over Gators
The John Curtis baseball team took to the field Tuesday afternoon trying to keep pace with the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers for first place in district. They did that, and did so convincingly with a 10-0 victory over the South Terrebonne Gators. Troy Naquin was pretty much dominant on the mound yielding just one hit and zero runs, with that hit coming from the leadoff batter of the game. Senior Matt Schultheis led the way offensively for the Patriots going 3-3 with a home run and 3 RBI's. Kory Carter added in 2 hits, with every other batter except one adding in a hit apiece. The Patriots scored 3 in the first, 1 in the second, 3 in the fourth and 3 in the fifth for a 5 inning victory. Patriots get by Mustangs in 9 innings 3-2
After 3 hours and 20 minutes the Curtis-Assumption baseball game was finally setteled after 9 innings. Cody Dimak went the distance on the mound for the Patriots, as did the Assumption pitcher. It was a battle of wills, with the Patriots finally outdueling the Mustangs. The Mustangs struck first in the second inning with a bunt base hit followed by a throwing error and another base hit. Then in the third, Troy Naquin led off with a triple down the right field line, then scored on Jarod Fabacher's base hit to tie teh score at 1. The Mustangs then took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning behind a foiled squeeze attempt, in which the batter popped the bunt up. However, Dimak threw high to third base, as the runner slid back safely into third, and the ball went into foul left field. The runner then scored to give the Mustangs the lead. Dimak then struck out the next batter to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, Korey Carter came up with a key one out triple to right center. Troy Naquin then delivered a run scoring SAC fly to even the score at 2. It stayed that way until the ninth, when Josh Medley led off the inning with a walk. Blake Couch then bounced a ball up the middle to short, but the throw to second was wide sending courtesy runner Colby Arceneaux to third. Korey Carter then bunted him home safely for a Patriot 3-2 lead. Dimak then closed the door in the ninth for the victory sending him to a 6-0 record for the year. The Patriots will be in action again Saturday in a non-district matchup with the St. Charles Comets at Harahan Playground.
Record reaches 20-6-1 as Patriots beat St. Charles
Dustin Gilmore pitched a complete game five hitter in a non-district win over St. Charles at Harahan Saturday afternoon. Dustin also scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Patriots defeated the Comets 2-1. With two outs in the seventh, Gilmore ripped a shot down the line for a stand up double. Cody Dimak was intentionally walked. Corey Accardo pinch ran for Dimak, and was the runner at first. St. Charles tried to pick Accardo off of first with the catcher and the ball scooted to the outfield and Gilmore scored the winning run. The Patriots scored their other run in the first inning with Troy Naquin blasting a double off the left center field wall. He later scored on a passed ball to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. St. Charles run came in the third on a bunt base hit, stolen base, wild pitch, SAC fly. The Patriots will travel to Houma to play the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers for the third time in disrict. The Patriots offense was also on display as they scored nine runs on thirteen hits. Leading the way were Cody Dimak with three hits. The Trojans struck first with a base hit and a double in the first for the first run of the game. However, the Patriots quickly erased the deficit and got a 2 run lead of their own with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. In the inning, Troy Naquin led off with a double, then after 2 walks Cody Dimak delivered a 2 run single. Mike McCormack followed with an RBI base hit as well for a 3-1 lead. The Patriots then left the bases loaded. In the bottom of the second, the Patriots tacked on 3 more for a 6-1 lead. After an error and 2 walks with 2 outs, Josh Medley laced a 3 RBI double for the five run lead. The Trojans responded in the third scoring 5 runs to tie the score at 6. Patriot pitching walked 2, hit 2 batters, gave up 2 base hits and commited an error. The score would remain 6-6 until the bottom of the sixth when Dustin Gilmore walked and stole second before McCormack's game winning hit. The Patriots survive and move on to play Redemptorist Tuesday at Harahan in the Regional Playoffs.
Lady Patriots defeat Cabrini...move on to semi-finals
The John Curtis Lady Patriot softball team got a dominating performance from Jessica Barksdale en route to a 2-0 quarter final victory over Cabrini in Sulpher. The team moves on to face Live Oak in the semi-finals next. Good Luck Ladies!!!
2004 season comes to an end...Patriots lose 10-2 to Wolves
The 2004 season came to a screeching halt Tuesday afternoon at Harahan. The Patriots lost to Redemptorist 10-2 in a Regional playoff game. In the game, the Patriots never seemed to catch the break they needed to get a spark. The Wolves did a good job of hitting and running the bases. Cody Dimak started the game, and Dustin Gilmore and Troy Naquin alos pitched for the Patriots. Patriot pitching gave up eleven hits, five walks and 2 crucial errors. In the second, Dimak hit the leadoff batter. Then, the Wolves hit a grounder to first baseman Mike McCormack whose throw was high and wide to second and everybody was safe. A wild pitch sent the runners to second and third, and winning pitcher Brett Porche followed with a base hit to score both runners. The Patriots answered with a run in the bottom of the third on Jarrod Fabacher's RBI base hit to cut the lead to 2-1. But, the Patriots would leave the bases loaded when McCormack hit an infield popup on a 2-0 count. The run would be quickly erased when the Wolves 4 hole hit a home run to right center to give the wolves a 3-1 lead. Dimak then gave up a walk, a double and another walk to load the bases. Dimak then enticed an infield popup for out number 2. With 2 outs, the nine hole hit a dribbler to the right side that McCormack didn't go after and was out of the reach of Fabacher who was playing second. The result was that everybody was safe and on Fabacher's desperation attempt to get the batter, 2 runs scored. Then the Wolves' leadoff hitter doubled another run home, and Devin Joseph dropped a deep flyball to right to score another run and the Wolves led 7-1. Curtis' offense scattered 8 hits throughout the game, but stranded 11 runners on base throughout the game with 7 of those being in scoring position. The Patriots could never get a key hit. In the fifth after the Wolves tacked on another run to make it 8-1, Gilmore hit a one out double to centerfield. Dimak rolled out to second on the first pitch he saw and McCormack grounded out to third with a 3-1 count. The Wolve's added two more in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-1, but in the seventh the Patriots would not go away quietly. Naquin reached on a base hit to shortstop. Fabacher struck out and Naquin stole second. Gilmore followed with a base hit and Naquin later scored on a passed ball, which eventually would move Gilmore to third. Dimak walked and Cory Accardo came in to run for Dimak. On a 2-0 count McCormack then flew out to centerfield, and Accardo, thinking there were 2 outs, rounded second. He was eventually doubled off at first and the ballgame and the season ended for the Patriots. It was a good year as the Patriots ended the season as the 8-4A district champions and 24-7-1 overall. Thanks to all of those who gave their time and effort to make this season a success. Though we did not reach our goal, the sun came up Wednesday morning and we can thank God for our health!
Patrtiots redeem themselves with walkoff home run...
The Patriots reversed the one run victory the Holy Cross Tigers had on Wednesday with a one run victory of their own on Thursday. With 2 outs, 2 strikes and the game tied at 3 in the seventh inning, Ryan Rodriguez sent a shot to deep left center for a walk off game winning home run for the Patriots. The Patriots got it going early with 2 runs in the first, behind 3 doubles. One each by Colby Arceneaux, who was 3-3 for the night, Jarrod Fabacher and Dustin Gilmore. The Patriots extended the lead to 3-0 in the third after the Tigers committed 2 errors in the field, when Arceneaux delivered another RBI base hit. In the top of the fourth, the Tigers cut it to 3-1 on a solo home run. Then in the fifth, the Tigers tied it up at three on a 2-run home run. The Patriots, however, should have been out of the inning, but an error helped the runner reach base and allowed another batter. The Tiger batter made Curtis' defense pay for it with his home run. It stayed that way until the seventh when Rodriguez' shot cleared the fence for a Patriot victory. The Patriots will be off tomorrow and will play two games on Saturday. But, come on out and support the Patriot Classic at Harahan with two good ballgames tomorrow and five on Saturday. See you at the park!
Patriots fall in the 8th inning 5-4...
Once again the Patriots hit the ball well, but was unable to get numerous clutch hits to extend or take over the lead late in the game. The Patriots left the bases loaded in the second inning after grabbing a 3-1 lead. They left them loaded again in the fourth after tying the score at 4. For the day the Patriots left 13 runners on base. Dustin Gilmore pitched seven strong innings giving up just four runs. Devin Joseph (0-1)took the loss on the mound after giving up a run in the 8th inning behind 2 base hits an error and a walk. Jarrod Fabacher led the team in hits going 3-3 with 2 walks an an RBI. Colby Arceneaux chipped in with 2 hits and an RBI. Josh Medley and Kelby Weurtz picked up an RBI apiece for the Patriots. The Patriots will face the Holy Cross Tigers again tomorrow night at 7:00 in the Patriot Classic at Harahan Playground.
Curtis goes 2-2 in Hannan Tournament...
The Patriots out hit the Hawks 8 to 3 and left 10 runners on base, while the Hawks received no walks and only left 3 on base, with all three runners reaching on errors. The fatal blow was a bottom of the sixth, solo home run on a 0-1 count by the Hawks four-hole hitter to break a 1-1 tie. It was perhaps pitcher Kelby Weurtz' lone mistake of the night. The Patriot offense, however, did not do it's part in providing Weurtz with much run support. While the Patriots collected many hits, they did not get a key hit in a key situation. Or, Patriot runners ran themselves out of an opportunity to score. In the top of the sixth, Dustin Gilmore led off with a stand up double, but was picked off after Josh Medley's fly out to center field. Ryan Rodriguez then smacked a single that could have scored Gilmore to give the Patriots a lead. Dwayne Munch came in to run for Rodriguez, who was also picked off to end the inning, as the score remained tied at 1. For the night, Colby Arceneaux collected 2 hits for the Patriots and Blake Couch had the lone RBI for the Patriots with a fielder's choice in the first inning.
In Saturday's first game against St. Charles, the Patriots got the bats going early on. They scored seven runs in the first inning on five hits. Blake Couch picked up the win on the mound for the Patriots by pitching a complete game five hitter, allowing just one earned run. The Patriots defeated the Comets 9-3.
As good as the Patriots hit and ran the bases against St. Charles was as bad as they did against Newman in the nightcap of the double-header. The Patriots got just four base hits, however, 3 of those four baserunners were picked off. It was a very frustrating night for Patriot hitters who struck out seven times, and only reached second base one time. After Josh Medley gave up two runs in the first inning on four walks and a base hit, Dwayne Munch came in with nobody out in the second inning, after Medley walked the next two batters, and got 3 straight outs. Munch, who was seeing his first action on the mound, retired twelve Newman batters in a row before yielding a couple of walks and hits in teh sixth inning, but only one run. The Patriots lost to the Greenies 3-0.
The final game of the tournament saw the Patriots score nine runs in the first inning against the McDonough 35 Roneagles behind seven hits and three walks. The Patriots finished with 11 hits for the day, and Ryan Rodriguez pitched five shutout innings, yielding just four hits as the Patriots went on to win 13-0.
Patriots win one; lose one in Optimist Challenge
The Patriots defeated the Belle Chasse Cardinals Friday afternoon 7-2 behind the pitching of Matt Saucier (1-0) and Dwayne Munch. Leading the way on offense for the Patriots was freshman DH John Walsdorf who went 2-4 with 3 RBI's. Senior Blake Couch also chipped in with two hits and two RBI's against the Cardinals. On Saturday morning, the Patriots dropped a game to the Hannan Hawks. Ryan Rodriguez took the loss on the mound for the Patriots. The only offensive hits for the Patriots was Scott Stansbury's two hits and Ryan Rodriguez' base hit RBI. The Patriots wrap up the Optimist Challenge Tournament versus Rummel tomorrow at noon.
Rare Raider victory over Patriots in 8 innings...
Dating back to 1997, I cannot remember the last time the Raiders defeated the Patriots in the prep baseball season. In that season, both the Raiders and the Patriots claimed state titles, but the Patriots got the better of them that year. The teams did not play again until 2003, where the Patriots dismantled the Raiders 12-4 at Mike Miley, and in 2004, the Patriots won in the Optimist Challenge 9-7. But, this year the Raiders got past the Patriots 4-3 in 8 innings in the finale for both teams at the Optimist Challenge. The Raiders came into the game 16-1 and looking for revenge. Rummel got a run in the second inning with two base hits and a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Then in the top of the third, the Patriots staked claim to a 3-1 lead. Pitcher Blake Couch ripped a base hit, followed by Jarrod Fabacher's walk. Ryan Rodriguez then got a base hit, driving home courtesy runner Dwayne Munch. Dustin Gilmore then ripped a double to left center field scoring Fabacher and giving the Patriots the lead. Scott Stansbury followed with a sacrifice fly to center for the Patriot lead. The Raiders would not go away quietly like in years past though. They answered with a single run in the bottom of the third to pull within one at 3-2. And, in the bottom of the fourth tied the score at 3. Despite giving up 12 hits, Blake Couch (2-1) did a fine job on the mound, giving the Patriots every opportunity to win the game on offense. However, Blake's lone walk in the game in the bottom of the eighth inning spelled doom for the Patriots. The two out walk turned into the game changing moment for both teams. With a 1-1 count, the Raider runner broke for second. When the ball left catcher Josh Medley's hand, it looked like the runner was going to be out by many steps. But, the throw was off and the Patriots infielder's could not glove it and the ball wound up in short right field allowing the Raider runner to advance to third. Two pitches later, a ground ball to deep short was beaten out on a bang-bang play to give the Raiders a 4-3 victory. It was a spirited, well-played game by both ball clubs and was very exciting. Both teams benefited from the high drama, pressure-packed type atmosphere. Hopefully, the Patriots can learn from their mistakes...move on...and get on a roll. The Patriots have somewhat of a light week, game-load wise with just two games this week, after playing 14 games in 19 days during the month of March. The Patriots travel to Brusly to play a non-district game Tuesday.
Weurtz 1 hits Shaw through 6 2/3...Pats win 6-0!
Kelby Weurtz survived a tight strike zone early on and limited the Shaw Eagles to just 1 hit through six and two-thirds innings. Matt Saucier came in and got the last out of the game. The Patriots got things going early on in the second inning with a big two out double to the fence in left field by Josh Medley. The hit scored three Patriot runners. Then, in the third inning, Colby Arceneaux led off with a single and got to second on a wild pitch. Jarrod Fabacher drove Colby in with a base hit and Jarrod took second on the throw to the plate. Then Blake Couch brought home Jarrod on a base hit to give the Patriots a 5-0 lead. In the fourth, Medley and Weurtz walked, Arceneaux sac bunted them over to 2nd and 3rd and Fabacher squeezed home courtesy runner Dwayne Munch for the sixth run of the game. The rest was up to Kelby and the defense. They both did the job as the Patriots earned their seventh victory of the season. The Patriots will be back in action tomorrow against Belle Chasse at Segnette Field in the Optimist Challenge Tournament.
Patriots split Saturday's games....
In the first game on Saturday at Harahan, the Patriots acted like they were still in bed as St. Paul's whipped them in every way in an 8-2 victory. Dwayne Munch (0-1) took the loss on the mound going 3 innings and Matt Saucier went 2 innings. The lone bright spot on offense was Kelby Weurtz' two hits and the lone RBI. Other than that, it was a dreary performance by the Patriots.
In the nightcap against hte DeLaSalle Cavaliers, the Patriots fared much, much better, both offensively and defensively. The Patriots gathered 12 hits for the night in a 6-0 shutout. Blake Couch pitched wonderfully yielding just 2 hits and 1 walk through 6 innings. Devin Joseph pitched a perfect seventh, recording two strikeouts. On offense Jarred Fabacher plated half of the Patriot runs with 3 RBI's with 2 singles and a home run. Ryan Rodriguez had two hits and an RBI and Josh Medley had two hits as well. It was the first time the Patriots had a complete "team-oriented" victory in a while. Hopefully, this helps the Patriots come together as a team, like they should. We'll see when the Patrios play against the Jesuit Blue Jays Monday afternoon at Zephyr Field at 4:45.
Jays score 4 in the 7th to defeat the Patriots...
The Patriots battled down from an early 3-0 first inning lead to tie it at 3 in the bottom of the third. But, the Patriots could not take over the lead in the next 3 innings and went into the 7th tied at 3. In the 7th, the Jesuit Blue Jays got a leadoff double and a walk. A passed ball moved the runners up to second and third with nobody out. Gilmore got pinch hitter Jayson Lavie to strike out and the nine hole hitter John Faciane to ground the ball to second baseman Jarrod Fabacher. Fabacher's throw to the plate was low and went all the way back to the screen to allow the deciding two runs to score. A double by the leadoff hitter in the Blue Jay lineup plated another run. Devin Joseph then came on in relief of Gilmore and got the two batters out that he faced. But, the Jays tacked on another run on a wild pitch and balk. Dustin Gilmore led the way for the Patriots offensively going 2-3 with 2 RBI's and a triple. Josh Medley got the other RBI on a sacrifice fly. The Patriots play at the Chalmette Owls tomorrow for 5:00.
Terriers defeat Patriots in district opener...
The Vandebilt Catholic Terriers had struggled in their pre-district season, but came into the Patriots' backyard and took the district opener for both teams. The Terriers came in with something to prove and proved it to the Patriots winning 4-3. The Terriers got on the board early in the second inning when the leadoff batter got a base hit and the next batter came up and smacked a home run for an early 2-0 Terrier lead. The Terriers extended the lead to 3-0 in the third and then 4-0 in the fifth. Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots made an offensive charge. The first three batters of the inning reached base loading the bases with nobody out. Two fielders choices and a base hit by Blake Couch pulled the Patriots to within one run at 4-3. That's as close as the Patriots would get as Scott Stansbury would be stranded at third in the ninth inning. Dustin Gilmore (2-3) took the loss on the mound going six and two-thirds innings. Blake Couch pitched the last out in the seventh. The Patriots will be back in action on Thursday at Harahan against South Terrebonne in another district contest.
Patriots break tie, then explode in the sixth...
The score was knotted at 2 in the bottom of the sixth, when a one out infield popup was not fielded by a Skipper infielder. The ball fell and nine runs later the game was over. The Patriots plated nine runs on five hits, two walks, one hit batter and one huge Mandeville error. Also in the inning the Patriots had two doubles, triple and a home run. The doubles belonged to Kelby Wuertz and Colby Arceneaux, the triple was Scott Stansbury's and the home run was Blake Couch. The home run was the dagger the Patriots needed to basically seal the game. Couch's three-run shot to left, gave the Patriots a 8-2 lead. Devin Joseph went the distance on the mound for the Patriots giving up a solo home run in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third, as the Skippers scattered seven hits. Offensively, Jarred Fabacher had two hits and an RBI, Ryan Rodriguez had two hits and Blake Couch had two hits and three RBI's. The Patriots will be in action Tuesday in the district opener against Vandebilt Catholic at Harahan. Note, that there is a time change on the game and it will be played at 3:30.
Comets not enough for the Patriots...
The St. Charles Comets tried to defeat the Patriots with the short game and it nearly worked. St. Charles used the bunt early and often to set up their offense. In the fourth inning the Comets scored three runs on three bunts, one walk and one base hit. Two of the bunts were went for errors on relief and eventual winning pitcher Blake Couch. The first, he threw low to second and the next he threw high to third. But, Couch settled in and pitched two more innings of scoreless ball and gave the Patriot offense an opportunity to come back. Which, they did. The Patriots rebounded, getting one in the fourth on a double by Scott Stansbury and a triple by Alex Bordelon. Then, in the fifth, the Patriots finished off their comeback. Ryan Rodriguez drilled a two out double to left center field to tie the game at 3, scoring Dustin Gilmore and Colby Arceneaux. Scott Stansbury followed that with the game winning RBI on a base hit to bring Rodriguez around to score and give the Patriots a 4-3 advantage. Kelby Weurtz picked up the save pitching a perfect 1-2-3 seventh inning. The Patriots will be back in action Monday at noon against Mandeville at Zephyr Field.
Gilmore no-hits Terriers...knot up district race!
The Patriots came into the game trailing Vandebilt Catholic by one game in the district standings. They left tied up with 3-1 records. Dustin Gilmore avenged his last loss agains Vandebilt with a complete game no-hitter. He also led the Patriots in hitting going 3-3 with a double. The Patriots came out on offense with three base hits and a hit batter. Colby Arceneaux, who went 2-3 on the night, drove in the first run of the game on an infield hit. Ryan Rodriguez grounded into a double play, but gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead with his RBI. Josh Medley was hit by a pitch on a steal attempt by Jarred Fabacher which put runners at the corners with two outs. Courtesy runner Matt Saucier and Fabacher then completed a successful double steal attempt as Jarred crossed as Saucier was in a rundown for a 3-0 first inning lead. That's all Gilmore would need as he cruised through the night striking out eight Terriers. The Patriot defense did let their guard down a bit as they committed three errors on the night. The Patrios added a run in the fifth on a triple by Arceneaux and a deep sacrifice fly by Medley for the final score of 4-0. Their was a bit of contraversy over Gilmore's no-hitter however. The Terrier scorekeeper gave them a hit on an easy ground ball that the Patriot third baseman should have made moving to his left. As he was bobbling the ball, the throw to first was just late, allowing the Terrier runner to reach and giving the home team a chance to break the no-hitter. Gilmore retired the next two batters on a ground ball to second and a strikeout. The game will go down as a no-hitter in our book as Ryan pleaded that the play was an error because he could have and should have made the play, he was just trying too hard to keep the no-no intact. Great job Patriots!!
Offense comes to life against Assumption
The John Curtis offense pounded out twelve hits Tuesday afternoon at Mustang Park against Assumption with half of those hits being doubles. In the second inning, Ryan Rodriguez, Devin Joseph, Dustin Gilmore and Blake Couch each had hits, Josh Medley was walked and Jarred Fabacher was hit by a pitch. Also, in the inning, Scott Stansbury had a sacrifce fly giving the Patriots a 4-0 lead. The Mustangs answered off of winning pitcher Kelby Wuertz (4-1) with two base hits and two walks for a 4-1 lead. The Patriots scored three in the fourth inning with three base hits and a walk, all coming with two outs for a 7-1 lead. A run was also added in the fifth on a walk and a Scott Stansbury double giving the Patriots an 8-1 lead. Then the Mustangs made things interesting loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth on three consecutive hits. A line drive to center, was misplayed and the ball rolled all the way to the fence, scoring three runs. All-in-all, the Patriots still led after the inning 8-5. The Patriots would sap that momentum though in the seventh plating a run on a walk and a double by Alex Bordelon. Devin Joseph got the save in relief of Wuertz, pitching the last inning and striking out the side. Blake Couch had three hits for the Patriots, including two doubles, and Ryan Rodriguez had three hits with one being a double, which led the Patriots offensively. The Patriots begin round 2 of district at Vandebilt Catholic on Thursday night.
District record evens up at 1-1 with win over Gators...
The Patriots needed a big win to keep them in contention for the district championship and to get a little confidence for the remainder of the season. They got both, as they dominated from start to finish Thursday afternoon at Harahan. Amid the stunning news of Coach Johnny nearly getting both thumbs removed on the tractor as they showed up and the threat of poor weather, when it was time to play, the Patriots remained focused. Blake Couch scattered five hits on the mound yielding no runs to the visiting South Terrebonne Gators. Offensively, pretty much everybody chipped in. Dustin Gilmore had a solo home run in the second, after the Patriots plated three runs in the first on three hits. In the third, the Patriots scored six runs, giving the Patriots a 11-0 lead. They added one more run in the fourth for the deciding score of 12-0. Jarrod Fabacher had two hits, Gilmore three, and Ryan Rodriguez deposited his third home run of the season. The Patriots will be on the road for their next matchup at Assumption in another district contest.
Error proves costly in great pitching matchup...
Hahnville's Jordan Brown and Curtis' Dustin Gilmore squared off on the mound Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Diamond in what was a great pitching matchup. Brown seemed to be on and in control from early on. Gilmore, struggled a bit early, but settled in and pitched well enough to give up no earned runs. Despite a first inning walk, the Tigers didn't do any damage until there were 2 outs, with nobody on, in the bottom of the second. A harmless ground ball to shortstop Kelby Weurtz turned into a disastrous inning for the Patriots. Following the error, the Tigers registered three base hits in a row, including one blooper to right field in no man's land, to register the games only runs. Ironically, the next two batters in the bottom of the third inning each had base hits also. So, the Tigers registered all five hits in a row. That were all the hits they would receive for the game. The Patriots threatened in the top of the fourth when Jarrod Fabacher led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to third on a stolen base and a ground out. However, strikeouts to Weurtz and Gilmore hindered Fabacher's chances of scoring. The Patriots never threatened again until the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter Jeff Morales led off with a walk, Brown's only one of the game. Blake Couch followed with a infield base hit to put runners on first and second with nobody out and four-hole hitter Gilmore up to bat. Gilmore and Ryan Rodriguez, however, struck out. Josh Medley was then hit by a pitch to load the bases up and bring the winning run to the plate. But Scott Stansbury was struck out and the Patriots fell to the Tigers 3-0. Blake Couch relieved Gilmore in the bottom of the sixth and retired two straight Tiger batters. The Tigers will be a force to be reckoned with in 5A this season, as they field one of the top clubs in the city and state. So, it was a good judge to see where the Patriots have to get to to be able to compete at the top level, and recognized they are not very far away. The Patriots will be back in action Thursday against Hannan in the Hannan Invitational at 6:00.
Patriots play Gorilla Ball in win against Shaw...
The John Curtis Patriot offnese only had five hits in their Saturday win against the Shaw Eagles. However, of those five hits, four of them were home runs. Dustin Gilmore got things going for the Patriots in the second inning with a solo home run to left center field for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Eagles tied the score at one with a run of it's own. The score stayed tied at one until the fifth inning. In the fifth, Ryan Rodriguez led off the inning with a walk. Scott Stansbury then sent a blast to deep left center for a no doubter home run and a 3-1 Patriot lead. Jarrod Fabacher, in the same inning, blasted a 3-2 fastball to left field for another Patriot home run and a 4-1 lead. Shaw closed the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly. The Patriots added to their lead on a solo blast to right center by Jeffrey Morales for a 5-2 lead. That's how the game ended. After releiving Dustin Gilmore in the second inning due to soreness in his throwing arm, sophomore Kelby Weurtz pitched six strong innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season. The Patriots will be back in action Monday in a double header at Zephyr Field against Jesuit at 3:30 and Mandeville following that. Come on out to the "Shrine on Airline" to see the Patriots play.
Freshman Saucier thwarts Wolves 7th inning rally...
Matt Saucier trotted in from the right field bullpen with the Patriots holding a 4 run lead with the bases loaded and nobody out. He retired the next three batters in order to give the Patriots an 8-6 victory. Five Patriot pitchers pitched in the game. Dustin Gilmore got the start and pitched 3 solid innings yielding just one run. During that time, the Patriots built a 7-1 lead with good execution on steals, bunts and hit and runs. Gilmore had 2 hits for the game, Ryan Rodriguez had 2 RBI's and Colby Arceneaux had 2 RBI's for the visiting Patriots. Kelby Weurtz came in relief of Gilmore and pitched 2 strong innings and Blake Couch pitched a perfect sixth inning for the Patriots. The Patriots took an 8-1 advantage into the seventh. Ryan Rodriguez failed to get an out from the mound, giving up 3 hits, 2 walks and an a big fielding error by the Patriots. However, Saucier finished the game as the Patriots won the 2005 season opener. The Patriots will be in action again on Wednesday against Shaw at Shaw.
Bad inning spells doom for the Patriots' season...
Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Patriots had to be feeling pretty good about the prospects of winning. Leading 4-1 and with Kelby Wuertz yielding just a base hit and a solo home run and striking out the side in the bottom of the third, the Patriots seemed to be in control. That all came to an end fifteen batters and ten runners later. The inning started with a leadoff double. After getting slightly squeezed by the home plate umpire, Kelby Wuertz walked the next two, hit the next guy, then walked the final hitter he would face. Devin Joseph came on in relief of Wuertz and would not fare any better, giving up five consecutive hits on three base hits and two doubles to surrender what was once a three run lead to a four run deficit. Dustin Gilmore then came on in relief of Joseph and got the Patriots out of the jam, but also gave up four runs, with three of them being Joseph's responsibility. The Patriots would not go away quietly scoring a run in the top of the fifth on a deep sacrifice fly by Jarred Fabacher to close to 11-5. The Broncos scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to extend it to a 12-5 lead. After a scoreless sixth, the Patriots added their last run of the season on a Dustin Gilmore double, then an error by the Bronco third baseman allowed Gilmore to score for the final margin of 12-6. The Patriots scared the top-ranked Broncos through three and a half innings though. The Patriot bats started out hot when Gilmore led the game off with a base hit. After steeling second, Jarred Fabacher drove a ball to deep left center field over the defenders head and off the base of the wall, which scored Gilmore from second and Fabacher made it all the way to third. Colby Arceneaux then hit a ground ball to the shortstop who could not throw out Fabacher at the plate and the Patriots led 2-0 after one inning. In the second inning, the bats continued to stay hot. Alex Bordelon led off with a base hit and Devin Joseph bunted him over to second. Gilmore then ripped a double down the left field line for an RBI, and Blake Couch followed that with a base hit of his own for a 4-0 lead. Gilmore led the way offensively for the Patriots with three hits (two doubles), and Couch chipped in with two hits. The Bronco pitcher did have 14 strikeouts for the game as he made the Patriots whiff on an assortment of change-ups, sliders, cut fastballs and curveballs. He did an excellent job of getting Patriot hitters to chase balls out of the zone and was every bit as good as his 13-0 record indicated. Fatigue was not a problem for him, even though he has pitched 18 of the Bronco's 19 playoff innings. With the win, the Broncos will have to decide whether to use Simpson in the semi-finals, championship or both games. It will be an interesting development. To all of the Patriot seniors, you accomplished a lot. Don't be satisfied with defeat, but know that you gave it your best shot...in this case, it wasn't quite good enough. We will miss you guys and have enjoyed watching your baseball careers develop. So, here's to you #5 Dwayne Munch, #7 Scott Stansbury, #10 Ryan Rodriguez, #14 Dustin Gilmore, #15 Blake Couch, #17 Jarred Fabacher, and #24 Devin Joseph. You guys have endured a lot of things and here's wishing you the best of luck in the most important game you will play...the game of LIFE!! You have been prepared, now go hit, pitch and play defense against the world!!
No extra innings needed in win over Tigers...14-4
Even though the St. Martinville Tigers led the game off with a solo home run by leadoff hitter Mace Hebert, the Patriots dominated offensively behind 17 hits, 11 walks and 14 runs. The Patriots put four runs up in the first, three in the second, and three in the third to build a 10-1 lead. The Tigers didn't go away though, as they plated three runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 10-4. The Patriots added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to finish off the Tigers via 10-run rule. Blake Couch pitched five and one thirds inning to get the win on the mound for the Patriots. Devin Joseph came in and got the last two out in the game. Dustin Gilmore, who led off with a triple in the Patriots' first at bat, was 2-3 with 4 runs scored. Jarred Fabacher was 2-4 with 2 RBI's, Colby Arceneaux was 2-3 with 2 RBI's, Ryan Rodriguez was 2-3 with 3 RBI's, Devin Joseph was 3-4, and Scott Stansbury was 2-4 with 2 RBI's and a home run.
Patriots survive...advance to Regional Playoffs...
The Patriots clawed back from a 4-0 lead in the third, and a 7-6 lead in the seventh to win 8-7 in an 11 inning bi-district playoff game. It was an exciting game that was played hard by both teams. Dustin Gilmore delivered the game winning RBI scoring Alex Bordelon, who led off the inning with a base hit, from third with a bouncing ground ball that hopped over the drawn in infield. The Patriots will face the St. Martinville Tigers next Tuesday at home at 5:30. That's all for now...I'm getting some rest!
Statement performance by the Patriots?
In a crucial district contest at Harahan Thursday between Assumption and John Curtis, the Patriots dominated the game, both offensively and defensively. Blake Couch (5-1) threw a one-hitter, with the lone hit being an infield hit that just tipped off the glove of Ryan Rodriguez then skipped just out of the reach of Dustin Gilmore at shortstop. Couch struck out six in five innings of work and walked just one. Gilmore spanked two home runs on the day going 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Scott Stansbury also added a solo home run. The Patriots showed patience at the plate working the Assumption pitcher with every pitch. A lot of outs were hard outs all throughout the game, as the Patriots struck out only three times. After a non-district game against St. Charles on Saturday, the Patriots will be back in action Tuesday agaist Vandebilt Catholic at Harahan. This is another big game, because Vandebilt is just one game back of the Patriots and could force a tie with the Patriots, but would win the tiebreaker if they both finished tied for the district lead. Come out and support the Patriots!
Eight run sixth brings Patriots back from behind...
The Patriots had a big come from behind victory for the first time this season as they trailed 7-2 going into the top of the fourth. In the fourth, the Patriots began their charge towards a comeback. In the inning, Scott Stansbury had an RBI base hit and Dustin Gilmore had a two RBI double to bring the score to 7-5. Dwayne Munch, who was on in relief of starting pitcher Gilmore, did a great job of keeping the St. Charles Comet offense at bay. The Patriots added another in the fifth on a leadoff double by Colby Arceneaux, a stolen base and a wild throw by the catcher to bring home Arceneaux to close the gape to 7-6. Kelby Wuertz came on in the bottom of the fifth and pitched a quick 1-2-3 inning as the momentum swung to the Patriots' first base dugout. In the sixth, the Patriots exploded. Devin Joseph led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and Stansbury gave the Patriots the lead for good with a 2-run home run that hit the top of the fence above the yellow line. Dustin Gilmore followed that with the second back to back home runs in as many games. The offense didn't stop there however. Blake Couch followed with an infield hit. Then, following an out and a walk, Josh Medley had an RBI base hit. Pinch hitter Jeff Morales then scorched a line drive to the fence for a 2 RBI single to give the Patriots breathing room at 11-7. The inning ended three runs later and the Patriots had a 14-7 lead. The Comets threatened in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on a bases loaded hit to close to 14-9, but that's as close as they would get as Devin Joseph came in and pitched a scoreless seventh. The Patriots now shift their focus back to district as they basically play for the district title Tuesday afternoon against Vandebilt Catholic at Harahan.
Four game win streak is longest of the season...
The Patriots visited South Terrebonne's Swamp looking for their first four game winning streak of the season. They left with it and a 7-2 victory. Devin Joseph pitched six and a third innings before giving way to Kelby Wuertz for the last two outs. The Patriots hit had ten hits for the game and had many more that were basically robbed on hard hit line drives, ground balls and deep fly balls. The offense was led by Blake Couch, Colby Arceneaux and Alex Bordelon who each went 2-3. Dustin Gilmore went 1-3, but had 3 RBI's for the Patriots. Joseph struggled with his control in the first two innings, then settled down a bit and pitched well until he ran out of gas in the seventh. Wuertz picked up his second save of the season, while Joseph picked up his second win of the season. The Patriots will play at Harahan on Thursday against Assumption in another district contest. Hope to see you there. (*Note: Thursday's JV game has been cancelled and there will only be a Varsity game played at 4:00.)
Long ball used in district championship clinching victory...
The John Curtis Patriot Baseball Team assured themselves of a first place district finish Tuesday afternoon with a 7-3 victory over Vandebilt Catholic. The Patriots can finish no worse than tied for first, but will win the tiebreaker versus Vandebilt by winning two out of three games. The Patriots hit three homeruns in the game, including two by Blake Couch and one by Alex Bordelon in the victory. Couch's homeruns were both two run shots giving him four RBI's for the day. He also had a bunt base hit and a scoreless inning on the mound in the sixth. Couch was in relief of Kelby Wuertz (5-1), who won his fifth game on the mound for the Patriots. Dustin Gilmore also had a three hit day as he went 3-3 with one RBI. Couch's homeruns came in the bottom of the first and fourth innings following Gilmore's base hits each time. Bordelon's home run also came in the fourth, giving the Patriots a 5-2 lead. The Terriers closed to 5-3 before the Patriots added two in the sixth on a double by Stansbury, a base hit by Gilmore and Couch's bunt base hit. On Couch's bunt, the throw skipped past the first baseman and Gilmore scored all the way from first, giving them a 7-3 lead. Devin Joseph closed things out on the mound pitching a scoreless seventh striking out one. The Patriots can claim sole possession of the district championship Thursday at home with a win against South Terrebonne.
Patriots sweep week...win district championship outright!
The Patriots defeated the South Terrebonne Gators 6-3 Thursday and the Assumption Mustangs 19-10 Saturday to win district 8-4A with an 8-1 district record. The Patriots won both games despite being named the first place finisher in the district with their win over the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers on Tuesday. The Patriots play one more regular season game against non-district foe Newman, before beginning the playoffs either on Thursday or Friday. Stay tuned to see who the Patriots will play, as the game will be played at Harahan.
Patriots end season on sour note..second season set to start
Hopefully the Patriots' season won't end like the regular season ended. Clinging to a 5-4 lead with two out in the bottom of the seventh, a Newman batter dribbled a roller between first and second base to right field. On the play, the ball rolled up the right fielder's arm and got past him allowing the runner from first to score on a bang-bang play at the plate. And, that was it. It was over just like that. Fortunately, for the Patriots, the game really meant nothing. It was a non-district contest between two hot teams primed for playoff runs. The Greenies are in the same boat as the Patriots are, awaiting to see who their first round wildcard opponent is. The Patriots enter the playoffs rested, healthy and ready, with no excuse to play poorly. It should be an exciting time, so come on out and see the Patriots in their playoff game.
Patriots to face DeLaSalle to open playoffs...
The John Curtis Patriots, winners of district 8-4A, will square off against the DeLaSalle Cavaliers in the opening round of the 2005 4A Playoffs at 4:00 at Harahan. The Cavaliers are a wildcard team, which was tied for fourth place, but won the wildcard game in district 9-4A. The Cavaliers will definetely be up to the challenge though with a good ball club led by head coach Joey Cabacerias. Come out and support the Patriots!

Another not so good night for the Patriots...
The bottom line is the Patriots have to make plays on defense and throw more consistent strikes on the mound. Five Patriot errors coupled with twelve Patriot walks led to ten unearned runs against the Rummel Raiders Friday night at Mike Miley Playground. The Patriots tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on a 2 RBI double by Conner Mullins. Kelby Wuertz then gave up two runs in the top of the third when four out of five batters walked giving the Raiders a 4-2 lead. After that, it was really down hill. Numerous more Raiders would touch home plate en route to a 20-2 Rummel victory. The Patriots will be back in action tomorrow against Brother Martin at 12:00 at Kirsch Rooney.
The Brother Martin game Saturday was not much better with the Patriots getting whipped 12-2. The Patriots need to step up their game and start pitching and playing defense if they want to be a title contender.

Patriots come out of their funk with back to back wins...
The Patriots finally got things going with a big win against Shaw Sunday at Shaw's field. The offense scored a run in the first inning to give the Patriots a 1-0 cushion. Then the Patriots gave up two runs in the bottom of the first behind four walks. The Patriots got the lead back in the third inning when three runners scored on three base hits by Alex Lauricella, Kelby Wuertz and Lance Frazier, a sacrifice fly by Josh Medley and a walk by Matt Stansbury. Shaw then scored a run in the bottom of the frame to pull within 4-3. It stayed that way until the top of the fifth when the Patriots scored three runs on base hits by Lauricella, Frazier, Alex Bordelon and Jeff Morales each got base hits and Josh Medley walked for a 7-3 advantage. The Eagles got the score to 7-5 on two runs in the bottom of the frame. Josh Medley then blasted a one out solo home run for an 8-5 lead. Lance Frazier then pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs for the Patriot win.
Then on Tuesday, the Patriots battered the St. Martin Saints 15-2. Matt Saucier (2-1) went all five innings, yielding 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Lauricella and Colby Arceneaux each had multi-hit games with Arceneaux driving in 4 RBI's. The Patriots will host their own tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Mike Miley Playground while their home stadium Harahan Playground is still under construction from Hurricane Katrina. The Patriots will play at 6:00, 6:00 and 5:00 respectively each day.

Patriots open tourney with a BANG!
The Patriots gathered 14 hits against the Newman Greenies to start the Curtis Tournament Thursday night at Mike Miley, en route to a 12-2 victory. The Patriots scored a run in the first inning on an RBI by Lance Frazier. Kelby Wuertz, who walked earlier in the inning, scored on the hit by Frazier. In the top of the second, the Patriots gave up two unearned runs on two walks and a huge two out error. In the second inning, the Patriots tied the score at two when Matt Stansbury drove in Alex Bordelon with a double. Then, in the bottom of the third, the Patriot offense came seriously alive. The Patriots scored six runs on seven hits, with four of those being extra base hits, and one walk. Kelby Wuertz then cruised on the mound striking out seven Greenies. The Patriots three more in the fifth and another in the sixth for the 12-2 victory. Arceneaux and Bordelon each had two hits and, Stansbury and Frazier each had three hits. The Patriots will play Friday night at 6:00 against DeLaSalle at Miley in the second game of the Curtis Tournament.

Patriots are struggling right now...
The Patriots have not gotten any breaks in their schedule, in the game from the other team and have not been able to make enough of their own breaks in the recent past. The Patriots lost to DeLaSalle and St. Paul in the Curtis Tournament, are trailing St. Charles in a suspended game due to rain 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth and have dropped two games to St. Amant, Walker and East Ascension in the Optimist Challenge. Something good has to start happening for the Patriots soon. They are playing hard but can't seem to come up with either the big pitch, big hit or big play's enough to win games. The offense is getting hits, they're just spread out over the whole seven innings. The team batting average of .308 is solid, but the offense can't seem to bunch anything together. And, when they do, critical base running mistakes are taking them out of innings. On defense, 1-2-3 innings are few and far between. Pitchers either sprinkle walks around hits and the defense is put in a bind, or pitchers make good pitches and the defense makes an error or two to put the pitcher in a bind. The season is at the halfway point right now, and although the Patriots did seem to play better in their lone district game against St. Charles and have played somewhat better as of late, the Patriots need to kick it into high gear... and soon! The talent is there. The proof is in the stats. As a team, the Patriots have a .313 team batting average and a .426 on base percentage. So, nearly 43% of the time, Patriot runners are reaching base safely. That is saying that basically every other batter is reaching base safely. On the flip side, Patriot pitches earned run average per game is a manageable 5.40. On top of that the three pitchers with the most innings, which is Alex Bordelon, Kelby Wuertz and Matt Saucier, their combined ERA is just 3.64. The numbers do not lie...the potential is definitely there! It just has to all come together! We have to start playing Patriot baseball. Patriots don't quit...Patriots don't give in and they certainly don't give up! We are down right now, but we are NOT out! I believe in the team...DO YOU??

Patriots get bad news...then take loss to Riverside.
 | | | | Lance Frizier had a solo home run for the Patriots against Riverside |
| | view full size |
The Patriots received bad news about the shortened five and a half inning postponed game against St. Charles. According to the rule book, once a completed five innings has taken place, the game does not need to be played out or continued. The game can be considered an official game. The Patriots knew that. However, by mutual consent on the grounds at Zephyr field two options became available to continue the game from the stoppage point in the bottom of the sixth with the Patriots trailing 3-2 and coming to bat. Both umpires signed both team books and compared scores, batters, and even the St. Charles' coach ejection. The LSHAA said that if the district did not have any adendum to the NFHS rule then St. Charles did not have to resume the game if they did not choose to. So, the Patriots dropped to 0-1 in district play with the 3-2 loss. The Patriots also lost an appeal to the district chairman, who happened to be the St. Charles principal. Then on Tuesday, the Patriots went to Riverside for their second district game. The Patriot defense did not make enough plays to keep the game close as the Rebels jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings. The Patriots threatened in the fourth and fifth innings leaving two runners in scoring position in each inning, but came away empty. The lead closed to five runs in the sixth inning on a fielder's choice groundout by Kelby Wuertz. In the bottom of the sixth the Rebels added two more on a homerun to push the lead to 8-1. In the top of the seventh Lance Frazier hit a solo homerun for the final score of 8-2. The loss dropped the Patriots to 0-2 in disrict play. They will play the St. James Wildcats at home on Thursday at Mike Miley.

The drought is over...Patriots get back in the win column.
 | | | Alex Bordelon pitched seven strong innings vs. St. James |
| | view full size | |
The Patriots got a good pitching performance by Alex Bordelon as he went 7 strong innings and gave up just three base hits. On offense for the Patriots, Alex Lauricella, Josh Medley and Lance Frazier each had three hits and Colby Arceneaux pitched in with two hits. The Patriots scored one in the first, one in the second, four in the third and one in the sixth for the 7-0 victory. The Patriots will be back in action Saturday at Donaldsonville in another district game.

Patriots ten run rule Donaldsonville...fall to Jesuit.
 | | | | Kelby Wuertz was the only multi-hit player on either team in the Jesuit game |
| | view full size |
The Patriots defeated the Donaldsonville Tigers 14-3 on Saturday in Donaldsonville behind a strong offensive day by Alex Bordelon. Bordelon was 2-3 with 3 RBI's with a double and a triple. Matt Saucier picked up the win on the mound for the Patriots. The Patriots improved their record to 2-2 in district to conclude the first round of district play. On Monday, the Patriots lost to the undefeated Jesuit Blue Jays 5-0. The score was not really indicitive of how close the game was. The Patriots had a lot of runners on base all game, but couldn't get a key hit to fall. The Patriots hit the ball hard, but hit it right at Blue Jay defenders seemingly all game. The Patriot defense played okay, but a couple of errors led to four unearned runs in the game. Alex Lauricella took the loss on the mound, but pitched a really good game, going five strong innings. Kelby Wuertz pitched the sixth inning and Alex Bordelon pitched the seventh. The Patriots will start round two in disrtict on Thursday at St. Charles.

Disappointing loss drops Patriots in district
The John Curtis Christian Patriot baseball team entered the second round of district play with a 2-2 record looking to move above .500 in league play. They left Comet field with a 2-3, sub .500 record. The Patriots, simply did not make enough defensive plays and did not get runners into position to score runs. The Patriots collected five hits in the game, but they were scattered over four innings. Patriot runners advanced past first base only one time in the game, including no leadoff hitter in any inning reaching successfully. Not to say the Patriots did not hit the ball. They just seemed to hit it right at St. Charles defenders. The Patriots only struck out two times in the whole game. The Patriots will be back in action against the Riverside Rebels on Saturday at 11:00 at Mike Miley.

Power Surge propels Patriots...
 | | | Frank Maddie collected his first varsity hit...a GRAND SLAM! |
| | view full size | |
The hitting sticks finally broke out Tuesday afternoon on the campus of St. James High School. The Patriots collected 21 hits on the day, three of which were home runs and eleven were for extra bases. The offensive explosion led to a 24-0 victory to get the Patriots back in the win column and kept playoff chances alive. Colby Arceneaux hit his 2-run jack in the top of the second inning, after the Patriots scored four runs in the first behind four hits with Alex Bordelons 2 RBI triple being the key hit, to expand the lead to 6-0 at the time. They did not stop scoring there. Later that in that same inning, freshman Matt Stansbury hit a 3-run jack to push the lead to 10-0. The Patriots then added four more runs in the same inning for a 14-0 lead after two innings. In all, the Patriot starters collected 14 runs on 13 hits. Back to back doubles in the third inning by Conner Mullins and Matt Stansbury scored the only run in the third inning for a 15-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the Patriots scored six runs behind a Marcus Carlisle 2-RBI double and a grand slam by freshman Frank Maddie, who which was his first varsity hit. In the fifth, JoJo Walsdorf drove in Jesse Danna after Jesse hit a triple and Carlisle hit another 2-RBI double for the final margin. On the mound Kelby Wuertz picked up the win. After the Patriots built up a 15-0 lead after two innings, Wuertz was pulled. Kevin Wild, Carlisle and Mullins each pitched the next three innings for the Patriots. All of the pitchers combined for a one-hitter against the Wildcats. The Patriots will play the Donaldsonville Tigers on Thursday at home in another district contest.

Patriots fall to Riverside...
If you look at the hits total, you would say it was an evenly matched game. Both teams collected seven each. However, Riverside got the big hits, including three home runs, to collect 8 runs, while the Patriots collected just 2 runs. Alex Bordelon did not pitch bad for the Patriots, yielding just five hits, but his three walks and one hit by pitch eventually led to his demise as a pitcher. The first inning turned out to be critical in the game. Leadoff batter, and LSU signee, Lee Haydel worked the count to 3-2, fouled off two good pitches, then sent a low and outside fastball over the wall in right field for a 1-0 lead. Bordelon then induced a fly ball for out number one. Then a hit by pitch, followed by two walks loaded up the bases. An infield base hit, wild pitch and a fielder's choice brought in three more runs for an early 4-0 deficit. The Patriots answered in the bottom of the first against Riverside ace Poirrier with three consecutive two out hits, only to be thrown out at the plate for the third out. The margin was cut to 4-1. That was as close as the Patriots would get as the Rebels scored two in the second and one each in the fourth and fifth. The Patriots added another run in the sevent behind a Riverside error and a double by Colby Arceneaux, but that was it. The Patriots lost 8-2 and fell further back in the district standings.

Patriots drop two...a blowout against St. Charles and a heartbreaker against Riverside
Lets not talk about what happened to the Patriots in the seventh inning against the St. Charles Comets Tuesday afternoon at Mike Miley. The game was a 7-2 game entering the seventh inning then the floodgates opened. The Patriots wound up losing 21-3 to the Comets.
Against the Rebels the Patriots played one of their better games this season. The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, only to have that lead evened up at 2 in the bottom half of the same inning. The Patriots got a sterling pitching performance from Kelby Wuertz who went eight and two-thirds innings. His lone mistake was throwing a ball away at third on a bunt attempt by the Rebels, which led to an unearned run in the fifth. The Patriots threatened in the top of the seventh when Colby Arceneaux reached third base with one out. Lance Frazier then hit a screaming line drive off of the pitcher's glove, which prevented the run from scoring, and was thrown out at first. Josh Medley then followed that with a screaming line drive that the shortstop layed out for and robbed. The pitcher for the Rebels was equally up to the challenge going nine innings for the Rebels. The Patriots outhit the Rebels seven to four, with the nine hole hitter for the Rebels collecting half of those. He delivered the crushing blow in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and runners at second and third when he hit a shot to deep center over Alex Lauricella's head for the game winning RBI. The Patriots finish up the regular season at home against the St. James Wildcats then on the road at Donaldsonville and in a non-district matchup against the Belle Chasse Cardinals.

Patriots end regular season with three game winning streak...
The Patriots finished off the 2006 regular season with a three game winning streak. The first win was against St. James, with the Patriots winning 5-2. Matt Saucier went the distance on the mound for the Patriots picking up his fourth win on the season. Kelby Wuertz picked up his third win on the season defeating Donaldsonville 15-0. Wuertz and relief pitcher Alex Bordelon combined to throw a no-hitter. In the last regular season game, the Patriots defeated Belle Chasse in a non-district matchup at Cypress Park. The Patriots scored nine runs in the second inning en route to a 12-5 victory. Alex Lauricella got the win on the mound increasing his record to 2-2. Alex Bordelon had a big day at the plate collecting three hits in four tries. Lance Frazier and Matt Stansbury picked up two hits each. Also Josh Medley, Kelby Wuertz, Bordelon and Stansbury each collected two RBI's each on the night. The Patriots will enter the playoffs as a third place Wild Card and will await to hear who their opponent is on Tuesday morning. The LSHAA will assign the Patriots to play against a district champion on the road in the first round. Stay tuned to find out more information.

Patriots defeat district champion in first round playoff game...
The Fisher Gators entered the game as the 9-2A district champions. The Patriots played like the champions, however, en route to a 6-3 bi-district playoff win. Kelby Wuertz pitched all seven innings on the mound, yielding just five hits. The game started out with a bang for the Patriots. After Colby Arceneaux reached on an infield hit and Alex Lauricella walked, Lance Frazier sent a shot deep into the night sky for a 3-run home run. The Gators would respond in the bottom of the frame, though. They sent eight batters to the plate and scored two runs on three hits, to cut the lead to 3-2. The Patriots would add another run in the second when losing pitcher Clay Bourgeois beamed two Patriots and walked another. Lauricella would drive in a run on a fielder's choice to increase the Patriot lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the third, the Gators would cut the lead to one again, 4-3, on an RBI single. It stayed that way until the top of the seventh. The Gators, however, would threaten in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff triple, an out and a hit batter, the runner at first attempted a delayed steal. The Patriot defense sniffed it out and got the runner out between first and second, then wheeled to the plate to get the runner who was breaking for home. It was a huge, unconventional double play, but the Patriots would take it anyway they could get it. Fast forward to the top of the seventh. Lauricella drew a leadoff walk and Lace Frazier sent another deep shot into the night. This time, the center fielder made a great catch to rob Frazier of extra bases and prevent a run from scoring. Josh Medley then stepped to the plate and drilled a deep shot to the wall, scoring Lauricella from second, who earlier stole the base. Kelby Wuertz then drove in courtesy runner Matt Saucier to extend the Patriot lead to 6-3. That was all the breathing room Wuertz would need on the mound. He retired the last thirteen in a row that he faced, going back to the third inning. The Patriots will now travel to Monroe to take on the Sterlington Panthers on Monday. Hats off to Fisher for a great game and a great season.

Patriots' road comes to a long end...
The 2006 John Curtis Patriot baseball team went through some ups and downs this season. However, it looked like the Patriots hit their stride late in the season and would make a serious to contend for the state title. That run would end in Sterlington Monday afternoon, when the Patriots simply did not make enough playes to win. The Patriots started the game out hot scoring two runs in the first inning for an early lead. Kelby Wuertz drove in courtesy runner Kevin Wild, who took over running duties for catcher Josh Medley who reached via base hit. The homestanding Panthers answered with a run to cut the lead in half. It stayed that way until the fourth when the Patriots added a run with an RBI by Colby Arceneaux. That's where the Patriots fortune would end. The Panthers then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth with just one of those runs being earned. Patriot errors, wild pickoff attempts and passed balls doomed the Patriots throughout this game. The Patriots just didn't seem "sharp" all game. The Panthers led 4-3, but the Patriots could not muster anything on offense after that. In the bottom of the sixth, the dagger was placed in the hearts of the 2006 Patriot team. Following a 2-out double, a Panther sent a line drive homerun over the right field wall for a 6-3 lead. The Patriots went down in order in the seventh and their season was over. The John Curtis Christian School family would like to take this time to express their apprecitation to the 2006 team...especially the seniors, and of course their families. To Josh Medley, Lance Frazier, Jeff Morales and Orry Ball...we hope your time here with us has been as meaningful to you as it has been to us. You will always be Patriots to us and we are proud of the things that you have accomplished. We hope that you leave us as better men and are ready to face the challenges and difficulties of the real-world now. These lessons that we have learned over the course of your time here are not just baseball lessons...they are life lessons. We hope you can apply the lessons to your life so you can make a difference in this world that we live in. To the underclassmen, it is now your responsibility to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself from now until the first pitch of the 2007 season. Thank you and good luck to you all. We love you!

Patriots win season opener at St. Paul
The John Curtis Christian baseball team started the 2006 season hot at the plate. The Patriots plated three runs in the first inning behind four hits for an early run advantage. Alex Lauricella, Lance Frazier, Kelby Wuertz and Alex Bordelon each had hits in the inning. In the third inning, the Patriots made it 4-0 on a walk and a double by catcher Josh Medley. In the same inning, the Wolves cut the Patriot lead in half to pull the score to 4-2. The Patriots answered the Wolves runs with four more runs of their own running the score out to 8-2. Wuertz had a 2 RBI double and Frazier followed with an RBI single. Medley squeezed home the other run in the inning. In the fifth a solo home run and two runs later by the Wolves, the Patriots led 8-5. The Patriots plated another run behind Matt Saucier's infield hit RBI to extend the lead to 9-5. The Wolves threatened big time in the sixth and seventh innings. The Wolves scored two runs in the sixth to pull the score to 9-7 with runners on second and third. Relief pitcher Wuertz got two huge strikeouts to end the inning and the threat. In the seventh, the Wolves got the winning run to the plate after back-to-back walks, but Wuertz got a strikeout and a fielder's choice by shortstop Colby Arceneaux to end the game with the Patriots winning 9-7 on the road in Covington. The Patriots will play this weekend in Archbishop Shaw's tournament. Originally scheduled to start Wednesday, the Wednesday game got switched to Friday. So now, the Patriots will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the tournament. See the Game Schedule at this website for the updated schedule.

Bummer of an inning...
One dreadful inning was all it took for the DeLaSalle Cavaliers to hand the Patriots it's first loss of the season Thursday afternoon at John Ehret's field. In the first inning, a solo home run gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead. It would be all the runs the Cavs would need, but they didn't stop there. Patriot pitchers proceeded to walk nine Cavaliers in the second inning, give up just 2 hits and one Patriot made an error, as the Cavs scored 10 runs in the inning to make the score 11-0. The Patriots never threatened in the game as the offense was completely shut down collecting only 3 hits in the five innings of play. The Patriots will be back in action Friday against Jesuit at Shaw in the Shaw Tournament.

Dodging rain drops, Patriots win easily...
The Patriots easily took care of the Higgins Hurricanes at the Shaw diamond Saturday afternoon. The Patriots and Hurricanes played in a steady rain and had to add the tarp and remove it in the middle of the second inning because of threatening weather. When the game resumed because of the delay, the Patriots offense broke loose. The Patriots scored four runs in the innings behind hits by Matt Saucier, who also got the win on the mound, Matt Stansbury, Alex Lauricella and Kelby Wuertz. Lance Frazier had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the inning as well. Then in the third inning, the Patriots plated five more runs behind another hit by Stansbury and Lauricella with Jeff Morales adding in a hit. In the fourth inning, Kevin Wild belted a double off the wall to plate Marcus Carlisle who walked earlier in the inning. Lauricella came on in relief of Saucier and gave up an unearned run in the fifth behind two Patriot errors. The final score was 10-1 after five complete innings as the game was called due to darkness and rain. The Patriots will be back in action Sunday at 3:00 against Jesuit in a make-up game from Friday's cancellation.

Seven run first inning too much to overcome...
The Patriots gave up seven first inning runs to the defending 5A state champion Jesuit Blue Jays in the last game of the Shaw Tournament Sunday afternoon. It was too much to overcome as the Patriots did not give up another run and scored four to close the gap to 7-4. The first inning left much to be desired...as a matter of fact, it was pretty dreadful. But, to the Patriots credit, they battled back and even brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning, but left the bases loaded. The Patriots left way too many runners on base to win the game. Kelby Wuertz took the loss on the mound for the Patriots who fell to 2-2 on the year. The Patriots will participate in the South Regional Umpires Tournament this weekend playing four games against Jesuit on Thursday, Rummel on Friday, Brother Martin on Saturday and Shaw on Sunday.

Patriots dismantled in Tourney Opener...
Wow, to say the performance was lackluster is an understatement. The Patriots kept the game close for 3 innings, then the proverbial wheels came off in the top of the fourth. In the first game of the South Regional Umpires Tournament against the it saw Jesuit Blue Jays whip the Patriots 16-2 with 8 runs coming in the top of the fourth and 6 more in the sixth. The Patriots led 1-0 through 2 innings behind a Josh Medley RBI base hit, but saw it's lead disappear in the third on a 2 RBI base hit. Starting pitcher Matt Saucier got out of the rest of the inning, but then things went downhill from there. Things don't get much easier as the Patriots need a much better performance tomorrow night against the Rummel Raiders. The Patriots will play at Miley tomorrow night at 7:00.
