Patriots fall one game short of State Tournament...
The Patriots again took to the road this year to face Sterlington, just like last year, hoping for a different result. However, this year ended just like last year, with a defeat to the Panthers. The only thing different is that the Patriots made it one round farther than last year's team. The Patriots traveled north of Monroe to Sterlington for a 4:30 game. Due to bad weather, the game was pushed up an hour in hopes of dodging the rain. The Panthers got their offense going early on. With two outs, Panther starting pitcher B.J. Laney hit a high, deep shot that looked like leftfielder Mike Vidrine would have a shot to catch at the wall. Vidrine ran out of room, though and the ball was deposited over the fence for an early 3-0 Panther lead. Two batters later, another Panther would send a shot over the left field fence for a 2-run shot following a base hit. The Patriots dug themselves an early 5-0 hole. The Patriots would scrap for a run in the top of the second inning though. Courtesy runner Blaine LeBlance scored from third on a pop foul ball by Conner Mullins to cut the score to 5-1. The Patriots held in the second for the same score. Then in the top of the third the Patriots would threaten. After two quick outs, Kelby Wuertz and Colby Arceneaux would both draw walks. They both would advance to the next base on a steal. Alex Bordelon then scalded a shot to the third baseman who had trouble handling the hot shot, but the ball bounced diagonally toward first base. The third baseman would pick it up and all in one motion throw a rifle shot to first for the third out of the inning. The umpires would keep the teams in the dugout with the impending weather approaching as a few bolts of lightning popped in the distance. Within a matter of seconds, the sky opened up and torrential downpours encased the Sterlington campus. Both team's fans huddled in dugouts, concession areas and bathrooms while the deluge pounded the field. Luckily, both teams were able to get the tarp on the field before it got too wet. The coaches and umpires decided to try to wait until 9:00 to replay the game. It was deemed unplayabale at around 7:30 and the teams would have to restart the game the next morning at 10:00 AM. When the game was restarted, the rain could not cool the Panther offense. They came out swinging with three consecutive hits, which would eventually lead to two runs for a 7-1 lead. The Panthers would extend their lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning. The Patriots seriously threatened in the seventh inning. Conner Mullins led the inning off with a base hit. Kevin Wild then flew out to left field. Matt Saucier drew a 1-out walk to put runners on first and second. The Panthers then made a pitching change. However, Alex Lauricella drew a walk to load the bases up with one out. Kelby Wuertz would strike out swinging. A run was plated when Colby Arceneaux was plunked by a pitch. The Patriots now trailed 8-2. Alex Bordelon came up and took a hard swing and caught a ball solid...the ball flew down the right field line...Patriot onlookers were hoping for a grand slam. Then the wind picked up and blew the ball about 10 feet foul. The ball did clear the fence, but the bases could not because of the foul ball. Alex would then work the count full, but a questionable called strike three ended the game and the season for the Patriots.

Congratulations to all four Patriot seniors...Colby Arceneaux, Alex Bordelon, Kelby Weurtz and Kevin Wild. We are so very proud of you and your accomplishments at John Curtis Christian School. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication to our baseball program and to our school. You have all grown up into fine young men. Your actions are a testament to our program and school just as the Sterlington coach told you after the game. Good luck in all of your life endeavors. Always remember..."Once a Patriot, Always a PATRIOT!"

Patriots hold off Mamou rally...
The Patriot baseball team held off a steady rally from the Mamou Green Devils after jumping out to an 8-0 lead after one inning of play. Alex Bordelon's 2 RBI double got the Patriots on the scoreboard first following a hit by Alex Lauricella and a walk to Colby Arceneaux. The Patriots didn't stop there, though. Starting pitcher Matt Stansbury helped his cause by driving home Bordelon for a 3-0 Patriot lead. Conner Mullins kept the rally going with a 2-out hit. The next six patriots would walk which led to five more runs for an 8-0 first inning lead. Stansbury then gave up a single run in the second and third innings for an 8-2 lead. In the fourth, the Devils would get thier offense going. A big double off the top of the fence in left field drove home a run to cut the score to 8-3. Then a deep shot to center bounced off of Arceneaux's glove to score two more runs with two outs to trim the lead to 8-5. Stone Speer then came on in relief and struck out the 3-hole hitter to get out of the soup. John Walsdorf then came up with a big 2-out, 2-strike home run to right field to give the Patriots a four run lead at 9-5. Speer then issured a leadoff walk to start the fifth. Matt Saucier would come on in relief and give up two walks and a double and strike out one batter, as the Devils inched closer at 9-6 now. Kelby Wuertz came on in relief with the bases loaded and only one out. He would bear down and strike out the next two Devil batters to slip out of the jam. In the sixth, the Devils would load the bases again, this time with a base hit a walk and an error. Weurtz would entice a fly ball to left to wriggle out of trouble again. The Patriots would then extend the lead to 10-6 behind a base hit by Arceneaux and Bordelon's second double for the day. Bordelon would finish 2-3 with 4 RBI's! The Devils would not go quitely though. After a leadoff walk in the 7th, the leadoff hitter would pound a homerun to close the gap to 10-8. After another base hit, the tying run would come to the plate twice, but Wuertz pitched out of the jam yet again to preserve the victory for the Patriots! The Patriots will now travel to Sterlington for the second time in as many years to face the Panthers. This time it will be in the quarter-finals as oppossed to the Regionals like last year.

Nice start to the 2007 Playoffs with an 8-0 win...
Kelby Wuertz pitched six shutout innings of 1 hit ball on the mound for the Patriots Thursday afternoon at Kirsch-Rooney against the Newman Greenies. The Patriot offense got it going early. Alex Lauricella led off with a base hit and Wuertz drew a walk. Colby Arceneaux then hit a scorching line drive to the second baseman who caught it flipped it to first for the second out, then on to second base for the third out...a TRIPLE PLAY!! That did not deter the offensive attack, however. In the second inning, Alex Bordelon led off the inning with a double. Conner Mullins would bring him home on a base hit. Kevin Wild then bunted a run in. Alex Lauricella's fielder's choice would bring home two runs as he beat out a double play attempt by the Greenies. Wuertz would eventually bring him home for another run, then Arceneaux drilled a home run for a 7-0 lead. That score would hold until the sixth inning as Wuertz dealt on the mound. In the sixth, Kevin Wild led off with a base hit and Saucier would bunt courtesy runner Blaine LeBlanc over to second. Alex Lauricella then drove home LeBlanc on a basehit for an 8-0 lead. Wuertz gave up his hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Stone Speer came on in the 7th to close the deal for the Patriots. The Patriots move on to face the Mamou Green Devils next Monday at 4:00 at Harahan in the Regional Playoffs. Come out and support the Patriots!!

2007 PLAYOFFS!!!
The Patriots get into the 2007 2A Playoffs and have been paired up with the district 11-2A champ Newman Greenies. Game time is set for 4:00 Thursday afternoon at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium on the campus of Delgado Community College. Come out and support the Pariots in their quest for their seventh state title!

Patriots end regular season on a high note...Playoffs next!
Four seniors ended their high school regular season Monday afternoon at Harahan playground with a 6-1 victory over the Belle Chasse Cardinals. The Patriots will now turn their attention to the 2007 playoffs and try for their seventh overall title. The Patriots have not won a title since 2002 and have not reached the state tournament since 2003. This team seems strong enough to return to the glory if they stay hungry and focused. Monday, the Patriots' three runs in the first inning would be all they needed as they eventually won 6-2. Alex Lauricella pitched two innings, Matt Saucier pitched the middle three innings, yielding one run, Conner Mullins pitched one and Kelby Wuertz pitched the final inning giving up one unearned run. John Walsdorf paced the Patriots balanced offensive attack going 2-3. Six different Patriots had RBI's throughout the game. Regular starter Matt Stansbury was not in the lineup due to his presence at the State Social Studies Fair in Baton Rouge. However, that did not stop the Patriots from playing solid defense and executing on offense for the win.

Patriots finish district 8-4...3rd place.
The John Curtis Patriots were a half game out of first place just a couple of weeks ago. However, the Patriots were defeated by the St. Charles Comets 4-3 and the Riverside Rebels 9-4 to end district play. Between that, the Patriots defeated the St. James Wildcats 6-1 and the Donaldsonville Tigers 13-3. The Patriots will play one more regular season game at home against the Belle Chasse Cardinals before they learn their playoff fate Tuesday morning. The Patriots are pretty much assured a wild card birth in the playoffs, but no #3 team in district is 100% assured a playoff game, so it's a nervous waiting game. Check back Tuesday to learn of the Patriots' fate.

Wednesday, April 4
Hot streak continues...
The Patriots won their fifth staight game on Tuesday afternoon after defeating the St. James Wildcats 9-3. Alex Lauricella pitched five innings of shutout, 1-hit ball against the Wildcats, in picking up his fourth win of the season. Conner Mullins and Kevin Wild pitched one inning each for the Patriots who increased their record to 15-7 on the year and a 5-2 district record. On offense, John Walsdorf led the way hitting a 2-run home run and collecting another hit. Conner Mullins also collected two hits and 2 RBI's while Kevin Wild did the same with 3 RBI's. The Patriots will face the Jesuit Blue Jays Wednesday evening at Harahan in a non-district tilt before finishing the second round of district play on Thursday at Donaldsonville. After the Riverside Rebels loss yesterday to the St. Charles Comets, the Patriots find themselves in second place all alone and 1 game back from St. Charles for the district lead. The Patriots face the Comets next Thursday at Comet Field.

Monday, April 2
Offense comes alive in 15-6 victory over Rebels....
The John Curtis Christian bats came alive Saturday afternoon at Fernandez Field on the campus of the Riverside Academy Rebels. The Patriots bolted out to a 10-0 lead in the first three innings behind a 3-run homerun by Conner Mullins and a 2-run homerun by Kevin Wild. The Rebels would not give up or give in, however. They came back to close the game to 10-6 in the fifth inning. The Patriots would push one across in the sixth for an 11-6 lead and then eventually push four more across in the 7th inning for the final of 15-6. Matt Saucier picked up his third win of the season on the mound and Zach Medley and Matt Stansbury both pitched in relief of Saucier. A couple of errors on defense and a couple of pickoffs were the Patriots' only real blemish on the day. With the win, the Patriots move closer to the top of district now with a 4-2 record. Halfway through the district slate St. Charles is leading the district with a 5-1 record. Riverside has a 1/2 game edge on the Patriots at 5-2. However, the Rebels and Comets square off Tuesday, as the Patriots play the St. James Wildcats who won a shootout against the Donaldsonville Tigers 14-13 and who nearly upset the Comets, losing 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th. The second half of district play should be very interesting! See you at the games!

Thursday, March 29
Patriots inch closer to the top of district...
Kelby Wuertz pitched a 2-hit shutout of the Comets Thursday afternoon at Harahan to move within one game of the district lead. The Patriots got the scoring going in the bottom of the third. Courtesy runner Blaine LeBlanc's steal of second brought home Matt Saucier's run from third as the ball wound up in centerfield on the throw. Colby Arceneaux then beat out an infield hit to drive in LeBlanc from third with 2 outs for a 2-0 lead. The Patriots would extend that lead in the bottom of the fourth with a 2-out 2 RBI base hit by Matt Saucier. Matt Stansbury's earlier double brought John Walsdorf to third to set the table for Saucier. The Patriots would add one more in the bottom of the fifth with Colby Arceneaux's fourth home run of the season, for a 5-0 lead. The Comets threatened in the seventh as they loaded the bases, but Wuertz pitched out of trouble and struck out the last two batters to end the game. The Patriots will play the Riverside Rebels for a share of second place with a Patriot win on Saturday at Rebel Park.

Thursday, March 29
Patriots end first round of district with a 2-2 record.
After dropping the district opener to St. Charles, the Patriots hoped to get back on track with a win over defending 2A state champ Riverside. The Patriots did not get back on track as they dropped a tough one 9-5. Although the Patriots rallied for 5 runs in the 6th and 7th innings and getting the tying run to the plate, the Rebels really brought it to the Patriots all throughout the game. The loss dropped the Patriots to 0-2 in district.

The Patriots got back on track with a 9-2 victory over the St. James Wildcats. Kelby Wuertz picked up the win on the mound with Matt Stansbury pitching in relief. Alex Lauricella collected 3 hits and Alex Bordelon collected 3 RBI's for the Patriots. The win brought the Patriots district record to 1-2.

On Saturday the Patriots evened up their district record at 2-2 with a resounding 13-3 victory over the Donaldsonville Tigers. Matt Saucier picked up the win on the mound for the Patriots, with Zach Medley pitching in relief. Alex Bordelon had a 3-3 day with 4 RBI's and Alex Lauricella had two hits as well. The Patriots begin round 2 of district play against the St. Charles Comets.

Optimist Club Tourney Results...
The Patriots dropped two 1-run games in the Optimist Club Challenge over the weekend. The Patriots out-hit both teams they played, but couldn't out-score them on the scoreboard. The Patriots lost a heartbreaking 8-7 game against the Rummel Raiders Friday night. The tying run was rounding second and heading for third as the lead runner at third was getting ready to score to cut the lead. Problem was, the Raider centerfielder made a game saving catch in right center field on a game saving play. If the ball gets past him, the game is tied with a runner at least at second base, maybe third, with nobody out. But, the trail runner eventually was doubled off and the Patriots got another base hit, but could not get any closer than 8-7. The Patriots got twelve hits on the night, but could not out-score the Raiders. Colby Arceneaux collected two hits and three RBI's and Matt Stansbury got three hits for the Patriots. Kelby Wuertz took the loss on the mound. On Sunday, Stansbury pitched a great game giving up only four hits, but two Patriot errors led to runs as the Patriots could only push across two runs on offense behind eight hits. The eight hits were scattered. Matt Saucier collected two of the eight hits and an RBI. The Patriots just cannot put enough offense and/or defense together to win these one-run games. The Patriots have lost three straight one-run games. The Patriots lost 4-3 against St. Charles, 8-7 against Rummel and 3-2 against Belle Chasse. This is after the Patriots had won four one-run games earlier in the season. District will resume on Tuesday against the defending 2A state champ Riverside Rebels at Harahan. District opponents will dominate the schedule from here on out.

Thursday, March 15
Patriots split midweek games...
The John Curtis Patriots defeated the Ellender Patriots 8-3 on Tuesday afternoon. John Walsdorf had a huge grand slam that put the Patriots up for good in the fifth inning. Colby Arceneaux would later add a 2-run homerun for insurance as the Patriots cruised in a non-district game. Alex Lauricella notched his third win on the mound for the season.

On Thursday in the district opener against the St. Charles Comets, the Patriots could only manage two hits, despite walking seven times on the day. The Patriots got a 2-run homerun from Arceneaux in the top of the seventh to pull within one run at 4-3, but that was the extent of the damage as the Comets defeated the Patriots. Matt Saucier took the loss on the mound, with Stone Speer pitching very well out of the bullpen to keep them in the game in the fourth inning.

The Patriots will be in the Optimist Challenge Tournament this weekend at Bayou Segnette. The Patriots play the Rummel Raiders Friday night at 7:00 and the Belle Chasse Cardinals Sunday morning at 10 AM.

Patriot Tourney Recap...
On Thursday afternoon, the Patriots defeated the Newman Greenies 10-8. Matt Stansbury picked up the win on the mound for the Patriots and had a key 2-out 3-run double in the bottom of the third. Kevin Wild and Conner Mullins also picked up two RBI's each. Then, on Sunday evening the Patriots sqaured off against the DeLaSalle Cavaliers. The Patriots battled from a 5-1 deficit, the get the game to 5-3 in the last inning, but that was as close as they would get it. Matt Saucier took the loss on the mound for the Patriots. On Sunday afternoon, the Patriots lost to the Holy Cross Tigers 7-1 as Kelby Wuertz took the loss on the mound. The Patriots did scatter 7 hits, but could not put anything together in one inning to get closer to the Tigers.

Wednesday, March 7
Ten-run rule shutout over Ridgewood
The Patriots completely dominated the Ridgewood Eagles at Harahan on Tuesday. The Patriots scored three runs in the first, four in the second and four in the fourth en route to an 11-0 five-inning victory. Alex Lauircella tossed four innings of no-hit, shutout ball on the mound. Zach Medley pitched the fifth and gave up the only hit of the game, but stranded him at first. Alex Bordelon got things going in the first with a 3 RBI double for the first three runs. He was cut down at third trying to stretch it into a triple. In the second, Colby Arceneaux and Matt Stansbury drove in single runs and Kevin Wild drove in two with his double for a 7-0 lead. In the fourth, Stansbury and Wild drove in RBI's each and Mike Vidrine drove in the tenth run of the game, with the eleventh scoring on an errant Eagle throw. The Patriots will be back in action this weekend in the Patriot's own tournament at Harahan on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Patriots open the tournament on Thursday against Newman.

Monday, March 5
Berwick Tourney Champs...Patriots sweep; going 4-0!
The Patriots finished off their sweep of the Berwick Panther Challenge by shutting out Central Catholic of Morgan City, then defeating Abbeville in the Championship game.

Patriot pitchers Matt Stansbury and Kevin Wild combined for a four-hit shutout of Central Catholic in the first game on Saturday. Kevin also hit a 3-run home run to seal the deal for the Patriots. Alex Bordelon hit a two-run home run earlier in the game for a 2-0 lead. The Patriots ended the game with a 5-0 victory setting up the championship game with Abbeville.

The Patriots fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but scored two runs in the third on a hit by pitch, then back to back doubles by Colby Arceneaux and Alex Bordelon for a 2-1 lead. The Patriots would increase that lead to 3-1 behind an RBI base hit by Matt Stansbury. Kelby Wuertz pitched six strong innings despite pitching with some back discomfort. Kelby limited Abbeville to just one run on just four hits. However, Abbeville scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 3. Both teams failed to score, or really even threated to score, until the 10th inning. Abbeville scored four runs in the top of the 10th for a 7-3 lead. Just when the Patriots looked dead on the mat, they got up in a big-time way. Matt Stansbury drew a leadoff walk. Conner Mullins then hit a deep shot for a home run to slice the lead in half. Kevin Wild then followed that up with a two-strike home run to cut the lead to just one run at 7-6. Matt Saucier followed with a base hit and Blaine LeBlanc sacrificed bunted him over to second. Alex Lauricella then hit a scorching line-drive base hit and Saucier was held at third. After Colby Arceneaux delivered a game tying double and Lauricella moved to third, Alex Bordelon was intentionally walked. John Walsdorf then squeezed home Lauricella for the game winning run. The Patriots fought back from a four run deficit to win the tournament. Congratulations to the Patriots. They will be back in action on Tuesday against Ridgewood at Harahan.

Friday, March 2
Patriots comeback in 3 out of 4 games and win the other in the bottom of the 7th in a tie game!
Well, if you've been to any one of the Patriot baseball games since the season opener, you've definitely gotten your money's worth...that's for sure. It started when the Patriots defeated the East St. John Wildcats in the bottom of the 7th 3-2. Then, the next day against Shaw, pitcher Kelby Wuertz was in a pitcher's duel and looking at a 1-0 loss in the top of the 7th when the Patriots scored 3 runs in the inning for a 3-1 victory. On Thursday night, the Patriots traveled to play in the Berwick tournament. The opening game was against Albany. The Patriots gave up four quick runs in the first inning and fell behind 4-0. After closing the gap to 4-3, Albany extended the lead to 7-3. Once again, the Patriots battled back eventually taking a 10-7 lead. The Patriots went on to win 10-8. In the second game, the nightcap Thursday, the Patriots once again fell behind against the homestanding Berwick Panthers 2-0. Colby Arceneaux tied it up at 2 with a towering 2-run homerun. The Panthers would push that lead to 4-2 with single runs in teh third and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, however, the Patriots would put a 5-spot up on the board. The big blow was a 2-out, 2-RBI base hit by John Walsdorf that put the Patiots up 6-4. The Patriots would scratch across one more run on an RBI walk by Conner Mullins, which would turn out to be the game clinching run. The Panthers led off the bottom of the inning with a base hit, then a homerun to close the score to 7-6. That's as close as the Panthers would get as the Patriots pitched and played defense and got out of the jam. The final pitch was thrown at 11:40 PM, and the game was called due to the time limit. The Patriots will have Friday off, then travel back to Berwick for a double-header on Saturday. See you there!

Friday, February 23
Patriots drop opener to St. Paul's; comeback to defeat DeLaSalle
The Patriots led St. Paul 3-2 in the 5th inning, then the Wolves stormed back to take a commanding lead the Patriots would never get back. The Wolves eventually won the game 10-3 as Matt Saucier (0-1) took the loss on the mound in relief of Kelby Wuertz. The bright spot on offense was Alex Bordelon's 2-4 performance with a double and a 3-run home run. The Patriot offense collected 7 hits for the game off of Wolf pitching.

The Patriots bounced back in their game against DeLaSalle after trailing 4-1 in the 7th inning. Colby Arceneaux led off the inning and reached base on a hit by pitch. Alex Bordelon then hit an absolute bomb that hit the base of the firehouse at Harahan to pull the Patriots within one run at 4-3. After John Walsdorf flew out to centerfield, Matt Stansbury drew a walk. Conner Mullins then hit a deep shot to left center and Stansbury scored all the way from first base to tie the score at 4. Kevin Wild then struck out to end the inning. The Cavaliers then scored a run in the top of the 8th to grab a 1-run lead at 5-4. In the bottom of the eigth, Jesse Danna worked a full count then hit a scorching ground ball the first baseman could not come up with and Jesse was on first. Kelby Wuertz' sacrifice bunt moved Danna to first, but Wuertz was also safe as the throw pulled the first baseman's foot off of the bag. Then Alex Lauricella laid down another perfect bunt and was safe at first, and everybody else was safe. Colby Arceneaux worked a full count, then eventually walked home the tying run. After an Alex Bordelon strikeout, Kelby Wuertz broke for home on a squeeze play, but John Walsdorf was hit by the pitch and the winning run was allowed to score since the bases were loaded and the Patriots picked up their first win of the season and evened their record at 1-1. Zach Medley picked up the win on the mound in relief of Stone Speer and Matt Stansbury. Medley pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up just one run on two hits. The Patriots play again on Friday at Harahan against East St. John.

Reverand John T. Curtis, Sr. has fought his last fight, won his final battle (his championship, if you will). He has passed on to be with the Lord, his Saviour, on this Monday evening at approximately 6:30 P.M. with his family in his home and by his bedside. Mr. Curtis triumphantly returned to his Master, the Lord Jesus Christ, with honor, dignity, and elegance. He is unlike any human being we have ever known. He will be remembered and missed by all involved in "our" John Curtis Christian School family. Thank you to all of those people who have shown their support during Mr. Curtis' time of sickness. The family is truly blessed to have people like you in our lives. Mrs. Merle is at peace and is doing fine, so don't worry about her.

John T. Curtis, Sr. realized his dream in 1962 when he started John Curtis Christian School from scratch on the untraveled ground on Jefferson Highway and Manguno Road in tiny River Ridge. With five children and a faithful, loving, devoted wife, he became the "father" of so many students that came through "his" doors and attended his school. To those parents and students...thank you for entrusting yourselves to the Curtis family and look forward to continuing the legacey that Mr. Curtis started 43 years ago.

Mr. Curtis, Sr. was the pastor of Coliseum Place Baptist Church for 30+ years, and started countless other churches doing missionary work all around the United States when he was a young pastor. He is survived by his wife Merle Phae Manguno Curtis, sister Ruth Barcelona, brother Harold Curtis, sons J.T. and Leon, daughters Debbie Curtis Eutsler, Kathy Curtis Rickner and Alicia Curtis Naccari, grandchildren Joanna Curtis Fabacher, Johnny Curtis, Jeff Curtis, Preston Curtis, Matt Curtis, Steve Curtis, Lance Rickner, Ashley Rickner, Robby Eutsler, Rebekah Eutsler, Paul Naccari, and Sarah Naccari, great-grandchildren, Reaghan Fabacher, Rylee Fabacher, John Thomas(Jay) Curtis IV, Michael Curtis, Anna Curtis, Abbi Curtis and Zoe Curtis.
Visitation will be held at Celebration Church on Airline Hwy. on Friday from 9-12, with the funeral right after, followed by the burial at Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, one can donate to the John Thomas Curtis, Sr. Memorial Fund via John Curtis Christian School.
