Martin County defeats Jensen Beach 33-26

Mike Duhart punched in a goal-line quarterback keeper with 42.9 seconds left in the game Friday for Martin County’s only lead in a 33-26 come-from-behind win against rival Jensen Beach.

In a game in which Martin County trailed by as many as 14, Duhart ran 24 yards for a first down that helped set up the 1-yard touchdown in the game-winning drive.

Duhart passed for 103 yards and a score in 6-of-11 attempts, and carried 15 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Martin County (4-6) snapped a four-game losing streak and capped a four-win improvement over an 0-10 finish in 2008. Jensen Beach (5-5) set a school record for wins but finished with three consecutive losses.

Jensen Beach quarterback Dustin Paonessa completed all five first-half passes for 123 yards and a touchdown, and the Falcons led 20-12 at halftime.

But Paonessa struggled passing in the second half and Martin County hung around to trade third-quarter scores.

And with one tricky, 8-yard touchdown pass on a quarterback handoff from wide receiver Levius Louissaint to Tyler Raynes, Martin County gave itself a chance to sneak away with a win.

Following a botched Jensen Beach punt, Duhart stormed through Falcon territory to seal the win on the 1-yard run.

“Perfect example of when you have a big lead on somebody you’ve got keep your foot on their throat and take them out. And we didn’t do that,” said Jensen Beach coach Lance Jenkins.

Merritt Island defeats Jensen Beach Falcons 33 - 21

After taking the lead late in the first half, Jensen Beach Falcons couldn’t hang onto it.They fumbled away their first two drives of the second half, and then — after Merritt Island scored the go-ahead touchdown — fumbled and lost the ball on a long kick return. Those mistakes, plus a drive that died on Merritt Island’s 7-yard line were the difference as the Mustangs clinched the District 13-3A championship with a 33-21 win on Friday at Falcon Stadium.

Despite the turnovers, the defense kept Jensen Beach in the game in the third quarter. With Merritt Island up, 26-21, and the third quarter near its end, the Falcons’ Tevin Wilson broke free for a 71-yard gain that put the Falcons (5-4, 2-2) into the red zone. They drove to the 2-yard line before a penalty pushed them back five yards on third down. After an incomplete pass, Jenkins opted to go for it on fourth down. Another incompletion gave the ball to Merritt Island (9-1, 4-0), which drove 93 yards on seven plays.

“I didn’t want to trade field goals for touchdowns,” Jenkins said.

KEY PLAYS

Dustin Paonessa tossed a 13-yard scoring pass to Brett Thiesen with 32.3 seconds left in the first half. When Kevin Barry kicked the extra point, the Falcons led, 21-20. Each team had three drives in the first half and all six ended with touchdowns. Barry’s kick was the difference at the half.

After Jensen Beach was unable to score late in the third quarter, Merritt Island converted on a key fourth-and-1 on its own 16-yard line. Quarterback Colton Clary kept the ball and his huge offensive line — it averages about 270 pounds — created enough push for him to gain three yards. Four plays later, T.J. Frederick broke free for a 65-yard score that gave the Mustangs a 12-point lead with 9:58 to play.

Westwood defeats Jensen Beach 42-15

Fort Pierce Westwood vs. Jensen Beach Football

Fort Pierce Westwood took advantage of a tremendous passing game from Travares Copeland and a stingy second-half defensive effort Friday night to rout Jensen Beach 42-15 at Lawnwood Stadium.

Copeland completed 15-of-24 passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns, and ran one in from 48 yards.

And after allowing two first-half scores, the Westwood defense clamped down and allowed a meager 16 second-half passing yards and 19 second-half running yards.

“Defensively, I thought we played great all game,” said Westwood coach Waides Ashmon. “Offensively, I thought we did a great job. Our quarterback did an outstanding job of moving us down the field.”

In a game riddled with penalties — 25 between the two teams for 215 yards — Jensen Beach (5-3, 2-1 District 13-3A) couldn’t match the athletic attack by Westwood (4-3, 2-1), which scored four times on plays of 20 yards or more.

Everette Jackson added 53 rushing yards, 58 receiving yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Jensen Beach quarterback Dustin Paonessa struggled while sharing time with Connor Shaw, and tallied just 22 yards passing on 2-for-13 throws, including an interception.

Westwood clinches a playoff berth if Merritt Island beats Jensen Beach next week.

If Westwood and Jensen Beach both win, a three-way tiebreaker with Merritt Island would decide the two playoff teams.

“From about the middle of second quarter, they hit us in the mouth and we didn’t like it,” said Jensen Beach Coach Lance Jenkins. “They’re probably one of the most athletic teams I’ve ever seen coaching. That’s a great team.”

Jensen Beach defeats Eau Gallie 40 - 8

Two Jensen Beach players chipped in touchdowns from multiple sides of the ball in a 40-8 rout of Eau Gallie at Falcon Stadium Friday night.

The Falcons allowed Bryce Nachreiner to take the opening kickoff for an 80-yard score and an early 8-0 lead, but Eau Galle never threatened after the score.

Jensen Beach running back Ben Lauderdale broke away on a 32-yard second quarter touchdown run, and later in the quarter returned an interception 55 yards for a score.

Wide receiver Brett Thiesen cradled in a 39-yard third quarter pass from Dustin Paonessa to extend the Falcons’ lead to 30-8, and took a late fourth quarter punt 52 yards to the endzone.

Paonessa shook some first quarter jitters to finish with 112 yards and two touchdowns on 6-for-12 passing.

Jensen Beach (5-2 overall, 2-0 District 13-3A) reached five wins for the first time in the program’s six-year history. Eau Gallie is 1-6, 0-2.

Jensen Tops Pt. St. Lucie 48-14

Playing its best half of football of the year according to coach Lance Jenkins, Jensen Beach romped in the second half to beat Port St. Lucie, 48-14, in the sixth annual County Line Bowl.

The Falcons (4-2) held the Jaguars (1-5) to minus-3 yards rushing for the game and just 72 passing. Port St. Lucie ran just 13 offensive plays after halftime as Jensen Beach controlled the game with grinding, clock-eating drives. The Falcons had 311 yards rushing. The series now stands at 3-3.

“We finally settled down and started executing like we’re supposed to do,” Jenkins said. “In the first half, we kept bringing pressure and losing contain. We just got ourselves in a little bit of control in our pressure package and made some plays.”

Port St. Lucie had five drives in the second half. Three ended in punts and the last one when time expired.

“We could not run the ball; the ground game was eliminated,” Jaguar coach Hilary Poole said. “Once that happens and your passes aren’t accurate and then you don’t move the chains with the pass.”

The other drive ended when Ben Lauderdale intercepted D.J. Juste, who shared time at quarterback with Albert Wilson, and returned the pick to the Jaguar 32. Two plays later, Tevin Wilson raced 14 yards for his fourth touchdown of the night and a 34-14 lead. The Falcons had led 21-14 at the half.

“Coach told us if we didn’t pick it up, we’d have to run a lot on Monday,” Jensen Beach linebacker Josh Christie said. “It was our best half, but we’ve got to put two halves together, and come out blazing in both.”

The first half of the game was all about penalties. Port St. Lucie was whistled for 100 yards of penalties in the first half, including several for too many men on the field. Jensen Beach had 65 yards of penalties before the half.

Jensen Beach defeats Titusville 23-7

In its district opener, Jensen Beach breezed past Titusville 23-7.  Quarterback Dustin Paonessa lofted a 42-yard touchdown pass to Tevin Wilson on the Falcons' opening offensive play.  Wilson put Jensen Beach in good field position when he returned the opening kickoff 51 yards.

"It definitely gives you a little confidence,"  coach Lance Jenkins said of his team's opening score.  Jenkins said he was happy the Falcons could get off to a 1-0 start in the district.

In the second quarter, Paonessa led Steven Graziono perfectly on a pass play, then Graziano slipped a tackle and sprinted for a 70-yard touchdown to put Jensen Beach up 14-0.  Wilson pushed the lead to 20-0 with a 26-yard run late in the third quarter.

The Jensen Beach defense, meanwhile, was dominant, keeping Titusville out of the red zone until the final minute of play.

Jensen Beach had five plays of 20 yards or more, while Titusville had just 29 yards rushing and entered their final drive with just 128 yards passing.

Jupiter Christian upsets Falcons 45-43

Jupiter Christian blocked a 24-yard field goal attempt as time ran out to end Jensen Beach’s bid for an upset Friday night at Jensen Beach.

Jupiter Christian held on for a 45-43 win against Jensen Beach, who outplayed the Eagles but committed a number of mistakes highlighted by 165 yards in penalties.

Jupiter Christian, the two-time defending Class 1B state champions, won their 29th consecutive game.

Jensen Beach, which threw for 330 yards, matched Jupiter Christian drive for drive and score for score until that final blocked field goal. Jupiter Christian took its last lead with 47 seconds left on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Marshyl Rothman to Westin Pedersen on a fourth-down play.

Jensen Beach then drove 48 yards to set up the field goal with 2.9 seconds left. A low snap doomed the attempt and allowed Jupiter Christian to block the effort.

Falcons top South Fork 17 - 13

Jensen Beach Falcons defeated the South Fork Bulldogs on Friday night at the Falcons Nest in Jensen Beach.  Clinging to a 17-13 lead, Jensen Beach turned back a long drive by South Fork that spanned the third and fourth quarters. Four times, Jensen Beach stopped a play inside the 10-yard line and regained possession of the ball on downs. That stop, plus a fumble recovery on a punt minutes later, was the difference as the Falcons held that lead until the final whistle.

“Oh yeah, it’s the biggest win in school history,” quarterback Dustin Paonessa said of the school’s first win over South Fork. “But that’s this week. Next week, we’ve got Jupiter Christian.”

Paonessa and the offense found their groove late in the third quarter. Paonessa, who turned 18 on Friday, completed consecutive passes for 20 and 33 yards on what proved to be the winning drive. Tevin Wilson capped the 65-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run, his second of the night. That put Jensen Beach up, 17-13, with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

South Fork responded with perhaps its best drive of the night. With Zach Fisher in at quarterback after Anthony Tellex struggled, the Bulldogs marched into scoring position. But Fisher was stopped three times and Kyle Reardon once inside the 10. The final stop came on fourth-and-2 when Moses Johnson brought Fisher down.

The Jensen Beach Falcons easily defeated the Viera High School Hawks 47-7 in Friday night's Kick-Off Classic.  Running back Tevin Wilson scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, including an 11-yard run on a flip from quarterback Dustin Paonessa to open the scoring with 9:58 left in the first quarter.  The Falcons took advantage of 3 fumble recoveries and an interception to give new coach Lance Jenkins a night to remember.
