What is Lacrosse?
What Is Lacrosse?
Lacrosse, considered to be America's first sport, was born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, and adapted and raised by the Canadians. Modern lacrosse has been embraced by athletes and enthusiasts of the United States and the British Commonwealth for over a century.
The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. Anyone can play lacrosse--the big or the small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse. An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in men's and women's lacrosse. Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which must be mastered by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball.
Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. Youth membership (ages 15 and under) in US Lacrosse has more than tripled since 1999 to nearly 100,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now more than 130,000 high school players. Lacrosse is also the fastest-growing sport over the last five years at the NCAA level and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are more than 500 college club programs, the majority of which compete under the umbrella of US Lacrosse and its "intercollegiate associates" level.

Dressing for the Cold
In response to a few questions I have received, here are some guidelines for dressing for our cold wet games.
1) water resistant warm up pants are a good idea, especially if they are lined.
2) sweat pants generally do not work well in the rain as they tend to hold water and make the boys colder.
3) under armour or other compression gear designed for cold weather is very effective.
4) feel free to wear as many layers as necessary, as long as all of the protective gear is also worn (arm pads may be worn underneath another layer if desired).
5) the jersey must be worn as the outer layer so that the teams can identify each other easily.
Any other specific questions feel free to call or e-mail me.

Severe Weather Policy
We will practice is all sorts of weather, including rain and snow. Please come prepared for the elements for all practices and games. We recommend dressing in layers, under the uniform, that can be removed if conditions change.
We will cancel practices or games due to lightning. We will typically make this decision at the field. If we do cancel practice in advance, it will be posted on the front page of our web site as soon as we make the decision. There is no need to call the coaches.
If you drop your son off for practice or a game and a storm is threatening, make sure that someone is available to pick him up if necessary.
Tournament Guidelines
For those of you new to youth lacrosse, the concept of playing multiple games on the same day may seem a bit strange. However, in youth lacrosse day long tournaments where teams play two or three games are typical. Below are a few tips to help you be prepared for these tournaments and to insure that your experiences at these events are enjoyable:
- Car Pool - We will meet at the parking lot by our practice field before each away game. The team will need to arrive at the playing fields about an hour before the start of their first game and will therefore leave pretty early. You may want to send your son with another parent after meeting at the parking lot to reduce the amount of time that you will have to wait around for the games to start.
- Bring Cash - While tournaments vary, inevitably they will all offer things to sell of some sort. Most will have a concession stand with food and beverages and many will also have a mobile pro shop where you can buy lax equipment. Some will even have events, such as booths with radar guns where you can check the speed of your shot, or lacrosse celebrities giving autographs.
- Bring Something to Eat/Drink - Lunch is typically provided for the team in the longer tournaments. Also, as mentioned above, most tournaments will have concession stands. However, it's usually a long day and the kids (and spectators) will undoubtedly get hungry and thirsty between games. A few nutritious snacks and some water to drink will go a long way to keep everyone happy and help to pass the sometimes long times between games.
- Dress for the Weather - We have been very fortunate with the weather so far this year, but don't count on it lasting all season. We should expect at least one game with cold, wet, and/or windy conditions that will make being outside generally miserable if you are not prepared.
- Have Fun!!! - Lacrosse tournaments are a great experience for the boys where they get a chance play a great game with their teammates. Come with the right attitude, be supportive of both teams (even if the score gets a bit lopsided), and remember that the officials are human and will undoubtedly make errors. You may be surprised at how much fun you can have!
