FORMER BUC CHRIS BURKE SELECTED BY SAN DIEGO PADRES IN MLB DRAFT

2008 Graduate Chris Burke was selected in Major League Baseball's first year player draft on Wednesday by the San Diego Padres in the 18th round. Chris, graduated from Iona College last month after a decorated four-year playing career, in which he set the all-time record for hits in a career and was named MAAC Conference Player of the Year at the end of his senior season.

In his high school career at Islip, Chris helped lead the Bucs to the first and only State Championship in any sport in 2007 as well as a return trip to the State Finals in 2008. Chris was also named All-County 3 times (2006-2008), All-State 3 times (2006-2008) and was the Leauge V MVP in 2008. He was also awarded the first ever Suffolk County Silver Slugger Award given to the counties best hitter.

According to baseball-reference.com, Chris is the first player to be drafted from Islip High School since 1971, when Tom Veryzer was selected by the Detroit Tigers.
