FAQ

Frequent asked questions:

How much are registration fees?  Information for registration is on the registration page.  Read the Parent Information booklet for refund policies.

Will I have to buy any equipment?  We loan the uniforms.  Football players will be loaned a home and away jersey, practice pants, game pants, certified helmet, shoulder pads, mouthpiece, belt and various pads.  You must purchase a girdle (available for sale at a discount price from us) and cleats.  Socks purchased from us are also recommended.  Cheerleaders will be loaned a uniform.  You must purchase "lollies" (briefs) and are offered warm-up suits, sneakers and bodysuit from us to purchase at a discounted rate.

Who will be coaching my child?  All coaches are unpaid volunteers with prior experience playing/coaching football or cheer (respectively). All coaches will be adults and are required to be cleared through a criminal background check as well as meet league requirements.

How old must my child be to play?  Currently we are fielding tackle football teams and cheer squads for ages 5-15. Flag football and flag cheer are 5 and 6 year old and possibly 7 year olds with no weight limit.  Age determination is based on your child's age as of July 31st.  Football teams are grouped by both age and weight; cheerleading squads are grouped by age and grade.

Mitey-Mite 7,8, 9 | 45-90 lbs.
Jr. Peewee 8, 9, 10 (11) |  60-105 (85) lbs.
Peewee 9, 10, 11 (12)  |  75-120 (100) lbs.
Jr. Midget 10, 11, 12 (13) | 85-135 (115) lbs.
Midget 11, 12, 13, 14 (15) | 105-160 (140) lbs.

Will my child play?  Absolutely. The league sets minimum play requirements for every member. However, the Islanders try to exceed those requirements every game when possible. Middletown is about kids having fun in a positive social setting. The purpose is to learn basic football and cheer skills and develop good team skills. Winning is secondary to building a child's confidence and improving his or her physical fitness.

What is the time commmitment?  Family and academic commitments always take the front seat. Starting August 1st practice is Monday thru Friday, 5:30 to 7:30 pm for most teams.  Flag teams may practice less.  After Labor Day practices are reduced to 3 days or 6 hours per week.  Home games are usually on Saturdays and most away games are on Sundays.  Check our web site for event dates and schedules.

Who do we compete against?  Our conference - Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts (RISMA) is comprised of 29 towns divided into divisions.  Middletown is part of the East Division and will play against Barrington, Bristol, Newport, Portsmouth, Riverside and Warren.  There are 3 other divisions and we may play cross over games.  There are 8 games with the regular season ending the end of October unless the teams go to play-offs.

Cheer teams will have a competition against all towns in October.

If you know of someone who wants to play, but may have trouble meeting the registration fee requirements, please call us; we want every child to have the opportunity to participate.  A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available.

Someone Else
Our organization was saddened to learn of the passing of one of our most valued members, "Someone Else".
Someone's passing has created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. "Someone Else" has been with us for many years and for every one of those years did far more than a normal person's share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's list: Let "Someone Else" do it. Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderfuld person was looked to for direction as well as results: i.e. "Someone Else can work with that team".
It was common knowledge that "Someone Else" was among the most liberal givers in our organization. "Someone Else" was a good person, sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of "Someone Else".
Now "Someone Else" is no longer here. We wonder what we are going to do. "Someone Else" left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things "Someone Else" did?
When you are asked to help this year, please remember that we can't depend on "Somone Else? any longer........

"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime." - Babe Ruth
