The Clinton Irish Blizzard (9-2) football team played perhaps its best game of the season in the Eastern Football League Semifinals as they advance to the Championship game with a dominant 47-0 win over the Randolph Oilers (8-4). With Quincy’s defeat of Charlestown in the other Eastern Football League Semifinal, the Irish Blizzard will host the Militia for the 2009 EFL Championship at Fuller Field on Saturday.
Clinton put up prolific numbers on the day as the offense amassed 437 total yards and 7 touchdowns. The Irish Blizzard scored on 4 of their 5 first half possessions, sprinting out to a 27-0 halftime lead. The second half proved to be more of the same with Clinton scoring three more times while cruising to a 47-0 victory.
The offensive line led the way for Clinton as Jon Davies, TR Staake, Jeff Learned, Jay Berry, and Nate Orcutt opened holes allowing Irish Blizzard running backs to rush for a combined 245 yards and 6 touchdowns. Scott Allard gained 96 yards on 15 carries while Dee Whitehead ran for 61 yards and 4 touchdowns. Ty Gamble also chipped in with 42 yards and a touchdown. The Irish Blizzard controlled the clock late as Ryan Aldrich and Sean Kerrigan combined for 46 yards and a touchdown in the 4th quarter.
Quarterback John Riccio led an efficient passing attack, completing 14 passes in 23 attempts for 192 yards and a touchdown. Rayshawn Link led all receivers with 5 catches for 70 yards. Jim Learned hauled in 4 catches for 56 yards including a second quarter touchdown. Ernie Adams caught 3 passes for 54 yards and Scott Allard notched 2 receptions for 13 yards.
Clinton’s defense was equally impressive, recording three interceptions and posting their fourth shutout in 2009. Up front, Luis Rodriguez, Brian Publicover, Jamie Cairns, Dwayne Forbes, and Shawn Phillips kept constant pressure on Oiler quarterbacks. Rodriguez and Publicover each registered a sack. The Irish Blizzard used several combinations of linebackers and looks to neutralize Randolph’s punishing rushing game. Alejandro Miranda, Mike McGonagle, Alex Mitchell, Brian Learned, Dave Flaherty, Dave Anderson, and Josh Lowe all teamed up to hold the Oilers running game in check. Lowe notched a 4th quarter interception while McGonagle and Learned had pass breakups.
Meanwhile, the Irish Blizzard secondary continued its stellar play. Gareth Watts led the secondary with 2 interceptions. Derek Guimond recorded two pass breakups. Cornerbacks Ron Guyton and Chris Leblanc provided blanket coverage all afternoon.
Clinton will now prepare to host the Quincy Militia for the 2009 Eastern Football League Championship on Saturday October 24th at Fuller Field.
