Clinton Scoring Summary:
4th: Allard 25 yard TD pass from Parker (Cairns kick)
For the second time this season, Clinton and Quincy staged a defensive struggle as the Irish Blizzard scored a 4th quarter touchdown to prevail 7-6 in a thrilling Eastern Football League contest in Quincy on Saturday night. Matt Parker and Scott Allard hooked up for a 25 yard touchdown pass just seconds into the 4th quarter. Clinton’s defense made the lead stand and the Irish Blizzard held on to defeat the Militia. With the win, Clinton improves to 7-1 while the Militia drops to 4-3 on the season.
Free Safety Derek Guimond intercepted a Matt Boyle pass on Quincy’s opening drive and the Irish Blizzard went to work on an 11 play drive to open the game. The Militia defense stopped the Irish Blizzard on a 4th and 1 play and Clinton’s best scoring chance of the half stalled at the Quincy 18 yardline.
The Militia built some momentum early in the second period and eventually converted a 4th and goal play from the one yardline. The Quincy touchdown and a blocked extra point by Clinton kept the Militia lead at 6-0 going into halftime.
The second half opened with a bang as Clinton’s Ty Gamble fielded the second half kickoff and returned it 84 yards to the Quincy 11 yardline. The Militia defense was up to the task, again holding Clinton scoreless as a 4th down sack of Matt Parker halted a promising Irish Blizzard scoring opportunity. Clinton would threaten once more in the third, driving to the Quincy 19 yardline before turning the ball over on downs with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter.
The Irish Blizzard defense responded with a big play. Alejandro Miranda forced a fumble that Clinton’s Roger Blaikie fell on giving the Irish Blizzard possession at the Quincy 27 yardline. Three plays later Parker and Allard connected on a 25 yard scoring pass. Jamie Cairns converted the extra point and the Irish Blizzard took a 7-6 lead with 14:42 left to play.
The Militia would threaten with 3:20 remaining but a 32 yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. Following a booming punt by Clinton’s David Flaherty, Quincy mounted one final attempt to win the game but a 49 yard field goal try as time expired fell short and the Irish Blizzard held on for the 7-6 win.
The Irish Blizzard were led by a stout defensive effort. Cairns and Brian Publicover led the defensive front as Cairns registered a sack and two tackles for loss. Publicover had two big 4th quarter sacks. Linebackers Miranda, Alex Mitchell, Dave Flaherty, and Dave Anderson all played well as Miranda led the way with 6 tackles and a forced fumble. Ronnie Guyton, Chris Leblanc, Derek Guimond, and Gareth Watts were solid in the secondary as Guimond led the unit with an interception and two pass breakups.
The offense got another big effort from its running game. Linemen Jay Berry, Jeff Learned, Nate Orcutt, Jon Davies, and T.R. Staake played well up front. Ty Gamble, Dee Whitehead, and Scott Allard combined for 109 yards rushing. Gamble led the way with 64 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Matt Parker added 43 yards passing including a 25 yard TD pass to Allard.
The Irish Blizzard return to action on Saturday September 19 following a bye week. Clinton travels to Bridgewater to faceoff against the Bridgewater Gladiators as kickoff is scheduled for 6pm at Bridgewater-Raynham High School.
