The Clinton Irish Blizzard got three touchdown passes from John Riccio and two rushing touchdowns from Scott Allard in a 35-14 home victory over the Brockton Buccaneers on Saturday night. With the win, Clinton improves to 6-1 and remains atop the EFL standings headed into their bye week. Tight end Ernie Adams hauled in two of Riccio’s three touchdown passes and the Irish Blizzard defense recorded three interceptions in the win. Following a bye week, Clinton will travel to Quincy on Sept. 5 for a road contest against the Militia.
The Irish Blizzard offense wasted no time following an Alex Mitchell interception on Brockton’s opening drive. With good field position Clinton moved the ball 40 yards in 5 plays as John Riccio hit Ernie Adams on a 16 yard touchdown pass to give Clinton a 7-0 early advantage. Linebacker Alejandro Miranda matched Mitchell as his interception on the next series halted a Buccaneers drive and a solid return gave the Irish Blizzard promising field position. Riccio went to work again, this time finding Rayshawn Link from 15 yards out extending Clinton’s first quarter lead to 14-0.
The Irish Blizzard would score on their third consecutive possession of the game with Allard capping off a Clinton drive with a 1 yard touchdown run widening the Irish Blizzard lead to 21-0 just :05 into the second quarter. The Buccaneers found life late in the half, scoring on their final two possessions and cutting the Clinton lead to 21-14 going into halftime.
The Irish Blizzard turned to their punishing rushing attack in the second half. Clinton came out of halftime and drove 59 yards in 7 plays with Ty Gamble and Allard combining for 54 yard rushing on the drive. The drive was highlighted by consecutive runs of 16 yards then 19 yards by Gamble and Allard. Riccio hit Adams on a 5 yard touchdown pass and the Irish Blizzard were back up by two scores with a 28-14 lead.
The Irish Blizzard threatened to put the game away on their next possession as Gamble and Dee Whitehead shared rushing duties. The two combined for 42 yards rushing but a Whitehead fumble deep in Brockton territory stopped a promising drive. Whitehead made up for it later in the 4th quarter carrying four consecutive times for 25 yards setting up Allard’s final touchdown of the night, a one yard run closing out a 35-14 Clinton victory. The Irish Blizzard defense forced a fumble and a Chris Leblanc interception helped hold the Bucs scoreless in the second half.
The Clinton defense was led by its defensive line. The front four of Dwayne Forbes, Luis Rodriguez, Jamie Cairns and Roger Blaikie were dominant throughout. Forbes led the unit notching 3 sacks and a fumble recovery in addition to several tackles. Linebackers Mitchell and Miranda had big nights as each recorded an interception. Mike McGonagle, Dave Flaherty, and Dave Anderson also played well in the middle. The secondary was led by Chris Leblanc who recorded one interception and a pair of pass breakups.
The Irish Blizzard offense was paced by its relentless rushing attack. Jon Davies, Jay Berry, Jeff Learned, Nate Orcutt, and Josue Diaz opened holes for Blizzard backs. Whitehead (10 carries, 70 yards), Gamble (10 carries, 55 yards), and Allard (8 carries, 50 yards, 2TDs) combined for 175 yards on the ground. Quarterback Jorn Riccio was efficient as he completed six passes for 72 yards and three scores. Riccio found easy targets in Adams (3 receptions), Link (2 receptions), and Jim Learned (1 reception).
Following a bye week, the Irish Blizzard return to action with a road contest against the Quincy Militia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm, Sat. Sept. 5 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy
