The Clinton Irish Blizzard scored on their first two offensive possessions and their defense made the lead stand as Clinton battled to a 15-0 win over the Quincy Militia in their 2009 home opener. With the win, Clinton improves to 3-0 on the season while the Militia drops to 2-1. Ty Gamble rushed for 103 yards and Scott Allard added a 5 yard rushing touchdown. Ernie Adams hauled in a 3 yard touchdown pass from John Riccio and Chris Leblanc notched his first interception of the season helping the Clinton defense post its 2nd consecutive shutout.
After a defensive stand by the Irish Blizzard to open the game, Clinton took possession and marched 73 yards in 10 plays. Riccio uncorked a 40 yard pass to Jim Learned before connecting with Rayshawn Link and Ernie Adams on big third down completions. A Riccio to Adams 3 yard touchdown pass closed out a drive where Riccio completed 4 out of 5 passes for 63 yards. Jamie Cairns’ tacked on the extra point and the Irish Blizzard led 7-0.
After a Militia punt pinned Clinton on their own 4 yard line, the Irish Blizzard marched 94 yards in 9 plays with their second offensive possession. The drive was highlighted by runs of 24 yards and 17 yards by Gamble before Allard broke off a 5 yard touchdown run. Holder Chris Leblanc pulled a bad snap on the conversion and sprinted into the endzone extending Clinton’s second quarter lead to 15-0.
The Irish Blizzard offense put together two more scoring bids before the half but came up empty on both drives. Clinton turned the ball over on downs after advancing to the Militia 22 yardline and 13 yardline before halftime. As a result, Clinton entered halftime holding onto a 15-0 lead.
Coming out of halftime, the Irish Blizzard defense quietly took control of the game. The second half saw the defense maintain their shutout while holding the Quincy offense scoreless over four second half possessions including two drives into the redzone. Cornerback Chris Leblanc led the effort with a key interception. The Clinton offense chewed up the second half clock as they embarked on drives of 9 plays (66 yards) and 10 plays (65 yards) while threatening to put the game out of reach. Allard, Gamble and Zack Blanchflower did the bulk of the work on the ground.
The offense was led by Gamble’s 103 yards on 15 carries while Allard contributed 67 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Offensive Line of Jay Berry, Nate Orcutt, Jeff Learned, T.R. Staake, and Matt Kronopolous helped Clinton backs combine for 179 yards rushing on 33 attempts. Riccio finished 10 of 19 passing for 138 yards and one touchdown. He completed passes to 6 different receivers with Adams catching a game high 3 passes for 30 yards and one touchdown.
Clinton got a great all-around effort from the defense. Up front Roger Blaikie led the way with 2 tackles for loss. Jamie Cairns and Dwayne Forbes each recorded a sack while Shawn Phillips contributed with constant pressure on the quarterback. Alex Mitchell and Ross Eberhart anchored the linebacking unit with solid play in the middle. In the secondary, Brian Learned, Derek Guimond, Ronnie Guyton, and Chris Leblanc all recorded pass breakups with Leblanc also registering an interception.
