HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE

Formed in 1961, the EFL is the oldest surviving amateur football league in the United States and has participated in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The EFL has gone through 5 name changes: New England Football Conference, North Shore Football Conference, North Atlantic Football Conference, Eastern Pro Football Conference...and has had teams in 74 towns, communities and cities, and gained thirteen national titles – Mitchell Memorial Club of Middleboro (MA) in 1988 and the Marlboro Shamrocks (MA) who captured the other twelve in an impressive span from 1993 - 2002 (7 USFA titles, 2 AFA titles, and 3 Minor League Football News titles). A number of players have made the pro ranks, going back to the playing days of Butch Songin of Boston and Tom Dempsey of Philadelphia.

Twenty-one individuals have been inducted into the American Football Association (AFA) Hall of Fame, and 20 have been inducted into the United States Football Association (USFA).

Records show that only six players have rushed for 1000 yards or more in a (maximum) 10 game season, the latest being Daron Brown of the CLINTON IRISH BLIZZARD (1,069 yards, 9 games) in 2004 and Frank Bianchini of the Marlboro Shamrocks (1,210 yards in 10 games) in 2000. There are a number of other records set in the league, including the longest field goal – 52 yards, most kicking points – 92, longest pass interception return – 103 yards, longest fumble return – 99 yards, longest kickoff return – 102 yards, and consecutive game winning streak – 54.)
