18U INDY EDGE ARE THE 2006 ASA NATIONAL RUNNERS-UP.......GO EDGE!!!
WHAT: 2006 18U "A" ASA Nationals
WHERE: Owensboro, Kentucky
WHEN: Sunday July 30th - Sunday August 6th, 2006
WHO: 144 ASA Qualified Teams from Across the Nation
WHY: To Battle For the Title of "National Champion"
The 111 degree heat index was fierce during the first part of the week and took its toll on the girls, coaches, fans and umpires alike. As hot and brutal as the weather was - so were many of the softball match ups on the field. The 1st pool play game for the Indy Edge was with the Minnesota Peppers - who fell to the ladies in blue and gold 1-0. The next game was indeed a nail biter - one that had many of the gathered collegiate coaches on their cell phones, scratching their heads telling their comrades, "The Edge are losing this game." And indeed they were by a score of 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Outlaws only needed 3 outs to put this one in the book and they were well on their way with 2 outs and 2 strikes on Chelsea who was at bat. But the Edge had other ideas for this game and played with heart until the scoreboard read Visitors - 4 Home - 5!!!! The first tourney game was with the No Mercy who the Edge beat 6-0. With that win under their belt, the 2nd tourney game would be at 6pm Thursday. Things were looking good for the Edge as they had the Birmingham Bullets down 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th and the Edge was at bat when the skies began flashing with bolts of lightening. The director called the girls off the field for safety reasons and we all waited in the parking lot for over 2 hours before the night was called off. The Edge had to return at 6:45 am to warm up to finish the 7:45 am game. It took only 8 minutes to put the game in the book as a "W" for the Edge. Next up - the always dominant Nashville Nighthawks. The Edge team found themselves on the losing end of the game 1-0 and again were down to their last 3 outs in the top of the 7th. The team had been hitting - but the Nighthawks were playing errorless defense and the Edge just couldn't score. As fate would have it - this would continue to be THE inning for the Edge as they would score 3 runs and then get the last 3 outs to win this game!! Next game would be 1 of 3 for Saturday and it was with a team staying in our same hotel - there was some light hearted teasing the night before but when the Edge took the field - the team was all business. When it was over, the Edge would again be the victors with a score of 5-0. Game 2 on Saturday was with the Grand Slam who fell victim to the bats of the Edge 2-0. The 3rd game of Saturday pitted the Edge against the defending 2005 ASA National Champs - The Louisville Lady Sluggers. WOW - their crowd was loud, the dugout was always rockin' and could they play ball!! But - so can the Edge and that's what we came for!! Again, the Sluggers would take the lead 1-0 early in the game and again it all came down to the last inning when the Edge decided to "do their thing". With a couple good hits and some great base running - the Edge would take the lead 2-1 to end the game!!! This win put the Edge into the Championship Game of the Winner's bracket and they would face the nearly all-college-player team of the Carolina Cardinals. We had seen this team play several times - and they could slug the ball over the fence harder and further than any team we'd seen in the tournament. The girls were loose on Sunday morning at breakfast and ready to play ball. Morgan took the mound, pitched the first pitch, the lead off put it in play, we fielded the ball, and then I can't remember exactly what happened when or how - but that lead-off player SCORED on that first pitch of the ballgame. WOW - how exciting and deflating all at the same time. Okay - regroup and get focused. The defense tightened up and kept the score to 1-0 for 6 1/2 innings. Now - have you been paying attention to this article? Notice how many times the Edge has been able to come in during the 7th inning and make a come back? Could it happen again? Well - it DID!! The Edge SCORED 2 times during this last inning and WON the game!!! The Cardinals battled in the loser's bracket and won that to get a chance to revenge their only loss of the tournament so far. So much excitement and then some down time to relax - who knows what the reasons might be but - all things said and done - the Cardinals were able to beat the Edge 2-0 and then 1-0 to take the ASA National Championship. Great team - good sportsmanship throughout the run!! I wish I could name names of which Edge player was responsible for making the Game Winning Run or hit the Game Winning RBI or made the Game Winning Catch - but it really WAS the entire team of 14 dedicated, hard working girls and 4 very committed coaches who love the sport and the girls. Each girl contributed whether it was with her speed, her bat, her pitching, her fielding or her catching - but it was an all-around team effort which was what made this such an exciting tournament. Congratulations to both teams - job well done!! See you in College Station, TX - mark your calendars now - 7/29/07 - 8/5/2007. GO EDGE!!
