Berkeley Springs Wins PVC
Grapplers win Potomac Valley Conference Title - by Horace Blankenship - 2/11/2009
Berkeley Springs put eight wrestlers in the finals of the Potomac Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 7, at Washington High School in Charles Town, and won six individual titles to capture the conference crown.
"We wrestled well today," said Berkeley Springs Coach Darrell Bennett. “We have the regional tournament coming up soon and I hope we are peaking at the right time. Even though the results are encouraging we still have work to do. There are still things we can improve on and hopefully we will."
The Indians scored 178 points followed by Hedgesville 161.5, Keyser 124.5, Martinsburg 109.5, Mussleman 105, Frankfort 98.5, Petersburg 91.5, Washington 77.5, Jefferson 34.5 and Moorefield 12.
Cohen Hovermale, Brad Reed, Richard Marshall, Damen Capper, Tory Bennett and Hobert Delph collected gold medals, while Loguen McKee and Derek Hovermale finished second in their respective weight classes. Zac Risinger also placed for Berkeley Springs, finishing fourth at 145 pounds.
Cohen Hovermale captured the 103 pound title with a 5-3 win over Keyser's Colby Kiggins. It was a big win for Hovermale, since Kiggins had beaten the Berkeley Springs sophomore each time they've met over the past two years.
Brad Reed convincingly won the 130 pound title with a 15-0 technical fall over Brad Huff from Hedgesville. Reed also pinned Thomas White of Washington on his way to the crown.
Richard Marshall pulled out a 9-7 victory in overtime against Martinsburg's Nick Allen for the 135 pound title. Marshall also defeated Steven Offutt from Jefferson and Washington's Micah Skubon earlier in the tournament.
Damen Capper ran his season record to 42-2 by scoring a 21-5 technical fall over Keyser's Brandon Harris in the title match, while pinning two other opponents to win the 140 pound championship.
Tory Bennett was another easy victor, as he, too, won his title match via technical fall. Bennett decked Bobby Weaver from Frankfort, 15-0, to earn the gold medal at 160 pounds. Bennett, a freshman, is now 36-3.
Hobert Delph brought home the final individual championship for the Tribe, by pinning Hedgesville's Travis Wheat during the second period of the 285 pound title match.
"We put eight guys in the finals and won six titles, so we are extremely happy" Bennett said.
The only two loses in the championship round were suffered by Derek Hovermale and Loguen McKee.
Hovermale lost to Alex Peer from Frankfort 4-2 in the 125 pound championship match and McKee was pinned in the 112 pound final by Musselman's Justin Cornwell.
Bennett was voted the Potomac Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
Berkeley Springs is scheduled to host a triangular meet this Thursday at 5 p.m., but there is some question, at press time, whether the match will be held. Next week Berkeley Springs will travel to Keyser for the West Virginia Class AA Regional Tournament. Wrestling will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 20, with Saturday's matches beginning at 10 a.m.
