Three Champions at Calhoun Tournament
Berkeley Springs crowns three champions at Calhoun Invitational - by Horace Blankenship - 1/28/2009

Damen Capper, Tory Bennett and Hobert Delph won individual titles on Saturday, January 24, at Calhoun County High School, helping the Berkeley Springs High School wrestling team secure a second place finish in the Calhoun Invitational.

Calhoun County scored 244 points to easily win their own tournament. The Indians finished second with 169.5 points, while Braxton County (142), Greenbrier West (139.5) and Oak Hill (105) rounded out the top five teams.

Berkeley Springs took 11 wrestlers to Calhoun County and eight placed in the top four positions of their respective weight classes.

Leading the way were Capper, Bennett and Delph.

Capper won the 140 pound title with a hard fought 1-0 decision over Greenbrier West's Tyler Midkiff. Capper reached the final by pinning Cody James of Braxton County JV in the quarterfinals and defeating Anthony Shillingburg from Fayetteville 6-1 in the semifinal.

Delph, too, pulled out a 1-0 victory over Braxton County's Tyler Morian in the 285 pound championship match. Delph, a sophomore, dominated his first two opponents, pinning both Andrew Spade of Greenbrier West JV and Corey Fair from Frankfort in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

Unlike his teammates, Bennett had an easier time in the 160 pound title bout. Bennett scored a 12-3 major decision over Larry Dean from Oak Hill to earn his gold medal. Bennett pinned Jessie Ramsey from Clay County JV in the first round and then defeated St. Mary's Andy Taylor, 5-0, in the 160 pound semifinal.

Also reaching the final of their respective weight classes were Cohen Hovermale, Derek Hovermale and Brad Reed, but each had to settle for second place.

Cohen Hovermale lost 8-3 to Clay County's Danny Suite in the 103 pound final, after defeating Robert Alderman from Fayetteville 11-1 in the first round and pinning second-seeded Jon Crane from Greenbrier West in the semifinal match.

Derek Hovermale pinned Luke Whitney from Braxton County JV and defeated Tyler Cottrill from Braxton County, 6-2, before losing the 125 pound title match to Alec Peer from Frankfort, 5-2. Hovermale had defeated Peer in the 125 pound final at the Max Horz, Jr. Invitational back in December.

Reed the 119 pound Class AA state champion from a year ago, faced the defending 130 pound Class AA champion, Cody Clark from Calhoun County in the 130 pound championship match. Reed had beaten Clark at Point Pleasant earlier in the year, but Clark dominated the championship match, scoring a 10-0 major decision. Reed reached the final by pinning Clay County's Zack Bailey and scoring a technical fall over Cody Everett from St. Mary's.

Loguen McKee and Richard Marshall also brought home some hardware with third place finishes in their respective weight classes.

McKee lost in the semifinals of the 112 pound weight class, 7-1, to AJ Frazier of Clay County, but bounced back with a pin over Poca's Brian Cook and a forfeit in the consolation final to claim his bronze medal.

Marshall also lost in his semifinal match at 135 pounds to Sean Gungle from Calhoun County, but scored a major decision, 13-3, over Hunter Hernandez from Fayetteville, before defeating Jason Myles from Greenbrier West in the third place match, 7-2.

Also scoring points for the Indians was Zac Risinger (145), Andrew Truax (152) and CJ Gosey (189).

"We were able to see a lot of teams we haven't faced this year," said Berkeley Springs coach Darrell Bennett. “ It was another quality field and gave us a good idea of where we stand with some of the better teams in Class AA. I thought we wrestled well for the most part, but still have some work to do."

The Indians will return to the mats this Friday and Saturday at the Viking Smash in Petersburg.
