Indiana Hawks : Bounin's Blog

4 more hours, then we tip-off....04/10/2012

Well, we are almost there. As both founder and a head coach of the Indiana Hawks, there are many things I look forward to when getting the season underway. I typically enjoy my time off from coaching when the season ends in July. I travel with my wife, enjoy time with our dogs, spend time with family, and so on. When summer ends and we start to move into the fall months, I get that itch again to get back into coaching mode. I start to get prepared all over again during October/November. I get in contact with parents, attend high school games of all of my players, and then do a little bit of recruiting and marketing.

There is much planning involved when running a basketball organization. I found this out the hard way during year 1. I said to myself 'I want to start my own team, it shouldn't be too difficult'. Boy, was I wrong.

There is recruiting, there are tough decisions, getting facilities for practice, scheduling tournaments, holding tryouts, making cuts and offers, ordering uniforms, etc, etc. The list goes on and on. Believe it or not, these are just considered the little things. The little things that lead up to where we are now.

Just a couple more practices until we get ourselves ready to start season 3. The past 2 years, we have opened up by losing our first game. This season, with 2 very competitive teams, I dare to say we will buck the trend. Shall I say '3rd time is a charm'?

4 more hours of practice and we will know.

My, how far we've come....03/29/2012

As I watched our first practice of 2012, I couldn't help but the smile, many times from ear to ear. You see, when the Indiana Hawks started in 2010 with a total of about 7 players at our tryout, my thoughts at that exact time were 'this is going to be much tougher than I thought'.

As I struggled to get word out, that there was a new club basketball team in town, I just kept plugging along and taking what I could get. As we enter into our 3rd season of competition, we still have 4 of those original players that were at tryouts, with our team. Evan James, Spencer Isenthal, Trevor Baxter, and Brian Strong have been with the Hawks all 3 seasons and have all been counted on as leaders.

As I looked at our roster list last week, I saw 20 names. Twenty. All of whom are good, solid basketball players, with great attitudes, and the ability to be part of something special. Sure, I had it in mind that we would start growing slowly and steadily over time, but this is better than I could have imagined.

2012 will bring many good things for Indiana Hawks players, both old and new.

Looking back on that 1st season, to see where we've grown, I still can't help but to keep smiling ear to ear.
