How Ikaika Basketball started
In 1999, 10 kids ages 12 and under participated in the local Kalanianaole Athletic Club (KAC) Community League. These kids were raw, unskilled, and not athletic to the game of basketball.  With my background as a player and an official, I volunteered my sevices to assist these kids with basic fundamentals of the game, and within this first season, the team did not do very well, but in the next season, I determined to reinforce the basics in the next season.

I taught these kids the basics fundamentals of high school and college drills. As these kids desired more, their progress has matured rapidly to become stronger and smarter players.  In the second season, the kids redeemed themselves from a terrible season and succeeded to win their division. With their tremendous success, it gave me the motivation to provide more fundamentals to these kids with executable offense, defenses, presses, and transitions.

As many games passed and players come and go, the team adopted the Hawaiian word "IKAIKA" meaning strong or mighty. Although the team is not tallest or has the best and athletic players in the district or State, the team became strong in mind and heart with the understanding and knowledge of how the game should be played.
