Question  Where did it go wrong?
I was at quite a few games this weekend and the behavior of the parents from both home and visiting teams was appalling. I saw parents park themselves at the end of the visiting teams bench and try to provoke the coach. I saw a 60+ year old women yell "if the refs get in your way take them out". It was disgusting. One parent who I know was very cordial to me before the game and said good game to my son after the game but just hounded the refs and kids during the game.

What happens to decent people once the puck is dropped? It was a very disappointing weekend on that front.

I'm actually out in Portland, Oregon for the weekend....went by a local PW AA game that some our friends were playing in....get this...the parents on the visiting team were constantly berating the refs...one MOM yelled down.."hey ref, get a xxxxx you have no control of this game"..

funny thing...home team that won 7-2 actually took 16 penalties to 7. So my buddy George, who coaches the home team, gets to sit the next game...but geez, if you're team is getting spanked, and you have 200% more power play time, give it a chill and relax and root for Johnny people.

My Bantam son played a game yesterday afternoon. It was tied until midway through the third and his team scored a go ahead goal and then put in two empty net goals at the end. With less than a minute to play, one of the opposing teams parents yelled out "Make somebody pay!". It was embarrasing.

Over the past year, I have seen a parent give a referee the finger, yell at the opposing teams players as they came off the ice, and called players in the stands "animals" when they cheered for another team at a tournament.

I really enjoy watching games in the rink, but sometimes I leave and watch from the snack bar when the parents get crazy.

ThumbsDown  Re: Where did it go wrong?
We played a NL game this weekend against a team that, while talented, felt to need to utilize their vast vocabulary of vulgarities against our players during the game. Not trying to sound "sensitive" but this was during a 9-10 year old hockey game.

They say the apple does not fall far from tree. Guess that is why I should not be surprised that one of the opposing team's coaches felt inclined to curse at one of our players while on the ice during the game as well.

Sure the opposing team won but their play was far outshadowed by the professionalism (and lack thereof) they exhibited on the ice.

What is this game coming to?

Don't know what the best solution is to handle unruley parents, but I do know what has worked at our high school games - for both parents, and more likley, unruley student fans.

The officials just stop the game, and have those individual(s) escorted from the rink. I've seen cases where students refuse to leave, and in those situations, the game is haulted indefinitely until they do leave. In all cases, peer pressure eventually prevails, and those with a big mouth do finally leave.
