Boy, 10, Dies On Soccer Field

Police and school officials in Frederick County are trying to determine how a soccer goal post fell on a 10-year-old boy, killing him. Bass-Hoover Elementary School sent a letter home with students Tuesday identifying the boy as Hayden Barnes Ellias, a fourth-grader at the school near Stephens City.

The accident occurred during a Blue Ridge Youth Soccer Association scrimmage at Millbrook High School on Monday. Police say it happened Monday night when the boy was playing for the Winchester United under-11 team on a Millbrook High School soccer field. Investigators say no one saw what happened because all the action was taking place on the other side of the field.

County school officials say the equipment is owned by the school system but they don't know the details of how it was being used.

Frederick County Public Schools spokesman Steve Edwards said counselors were sent to Bass-Hoover and other county schools Tuesday and would remain until they were no longer needed.

Capt. John Heflin of the sheriff's office said the incident is being investigated and further details were not being released.
