Hustlers falter in Santa Fe Springs
Bobby Bringing It!
Cole back on the mound for Hustlers
This weekend the Hustlers were in action in Santa Fe Springs in week 7 of the SCIFL Alliance series. Going into the tournament they held a slim two point lead for the Championship over Flor de Cana and left tied after an early exit in the semi's. "Although in the last couple of tournaments we have shown flashes of brilliance at times, we just have not been able to play with any consistency." says manager Bobby Cole. With less than a month to go to the NAFA World Series in Iowa, the Hustlers have another tournament, some practice games and workouts and hope to capture whatever is missing so that they can compete with the best teams in the country. The Hustlers focus never has been to win the Alliance Championship but with consistent good play they knew that they would be in the hunt. Hopefully the last tournament will be the starting point for team to get on a roll towards the ultimate goal for any team, a world championship. The Hustlers started well on Saturday with Jim Flanagan pitching an excellent game against the Amigos and earning the 3-1 win. Then in the second game the Hustlers defense and pitching wasn't up to the task against the P.S. Express and their bats couldn't compensate and the Hustlers lost the game 6-4. Finally in the last game of the day the Hustlers put it all together behind the pitching of Joe Salcido and the bats came through for the 11-2 victory. In Sunday's elimination round the Hustlers faced Those Guys, a new team with familiar faces made in the same mold as the Hustlers. The Hustlers again came throught with the bats scoring 16 runs while Bobby Cole allowed only 1 earned run on three hits. The roller coaster ride continued though in the semifinal against Flor de Cana with Jim Flangan on the mound the Hustlers offense just seemed to hit the off switch. A cut on Flanagan's index finger affected his ability to hit his spots with the kind of velocity that we were accustomed to and FDC took advantage that fact. Joe Salcido took over the pitching duties with the Hustlers trailing 6-2 with two baserunners in the third inning and surrendered an HR to the first batter he faced but allowed no more runs for the rest of the game. The Hustlers offense just couldn't overcome the deficit even though they had chances they couldn't come up with the bit hit to get them back in the game. Hopefully the Hustlers can get back to their winning ways in Santa Fe Springs on August 4-5.

Hustlers finish third in Santa Barbara
Nafa Salcido Sign
Hustlers ace Joe Salcido
This weekend the Hustlers traveled to Santa Barbara to compete in the SCIFL Alliance weekend #6. With only three teams entered in the A division they knew they would see some familiar foes. Saturday started with the guys going against Flor de Cana (formerly Latin Heat) and it started poorly for the Hustlers when they learned minutes before the game that two key players would be unable to play and they would be down to a bare minimum of players. FDC quickly exploited the Hustler defense when the leadoff batter reached on a Bobby Cole error at third and eventually scored two in the first. FDC added two more in the third and one in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The only bright offensive spot was a B.C. double but with clogged bases due to no D.R. the Hustlers were only able to plate one run and the game ended in a 5-1 FDC win. Game 2 on the day was vs. the P.S. Express and this time the Hustlers came out and put an early 6-0 lead on after two innings keyed by Matt Shaw's 4 RBI's. The Express plated 2 in the last inning to make the final score 6-2 but Joe Salcido was able to hold on for the win. In the final game of the day, the Hustlers would send Jim Flanagan to the mound against the Santa Barbara Bucks and their ace pitcher and ISC veteran Mark Bennett. This would mard the first time many of the Hustlers have ever seen pitching of Marks' caliber. The game would go down as the best pitchers duels the Hustlers have been a part of. Jim probably sensed he would have to be on the top of his game to even have a chance and was he ever giving up only one questionable hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Meanwhile Bennett was cruising along giving up just three hits and striking out nine through five innings. In the Hustlers sixth Kasey Shaw led off with a single up the middle and after a fielders choice and a Bucks miscue scored on a passed ball. The Hustlers threatened to add more in the top of the seventh but were turned away by stellar plays by the Bucks second baseman and a diving catch in right center to end the inning. The win meant the Hustlers would be paired against the Express again in Sunday mornings elimination round. The Hustlers ran Papa Joe to the mound while the Express sent their ace, Graham Balog to the hill. The Hustlers struck first when Kenny Shaw led off with a hit and came around to score on Matt Shaws single but that would be all they could muster while Palm Springs matched their first inning run and added solo HR's in the third and fifth innnings and another insurance run in the sixth to prevail with a 4-1 victory. The Hustlers left Santa Barbara feeling a bit down but do have a few bright spots to take with them into the next tournament in Santa Fe Springs.

Hustlers Second in Ventura
The Hustlers were in Ventura this weekend with high hopes of winning their third straight title in the A division of the SCIFL. It looked promising when all but one of the Hustlers team was in attendance for this one. The lone absentee was last years MVP, Daniel Roth sidelined at home with a taint injury. In the first game of the day the Hustlers faced the Amigos who had handed them their only loss in the previous tournament in Santa Fe Springs and once again the Hustlers bats fell silent, the only hits coming off the bat of Larry Watts Jr who collected two and scored the only run. The next game was against the Beer Nuts and the Hustlers quickly atoned for the loss and scored 10 runs in four innings. Joe Janicke was the heavy hitter in this one clubbing an HR, double and single and collecting 4 RBI's while Bobby Cole and Jim Flanagan combined for a no-hitter. The final game of the day was against the Latin Heat and the Hustlers jumped out to a quick lead with the first five batters coming across home plate with the big blast off the bat of Steve Proffitt. Jim Flanagan was on the hill for this one and pitched very well giving up just three runs over six innings while the Hustler defense chipped in with three putouts at home plate. The two wins and lowest runs allowed afforded the Hustlers a bye for the elimination round. In the semifinal, the Hustlers faced the Beer Nuts again and although the Nuts were game, the Hustlers were able to put them away with a 7-4 win led by Kenny Shaws three runs and relief pitching. The championship game was against who else but the Latin Heat and it was a pitchers duel with Joe Salcido and Cecilio Smalling squaring off again. The Hustlers struck first in the first with a solo HR from Matt Shaw but the Latin Heat came back in the fourth when David Carillo hit a ball sharply to left with a man on second base that was misplayed into a two run round tripper. The Heat then added another run in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. In the sixth the Hustlers fought back with another run on a Kenny Shaw triple and Dave Hess single to cut the lead to one. After shutting down the Heat offense in the seventh, the Hustlers came up and Doug Shaw led off with a double and B.C. sacrificed him to third. Then with one out the Heat changed pitchers bringing in Gilbert Joiner who was able to get a huge strikeout and a fly-out to right to end the game. The Hustlers showed why they are never to be counted out and that they will always fight to the last out. Next up is Santa Barbara where they hope to get back on top...stay tuned.

Hustlers rally late to win in Santa Fe Springs
Matt swing
Matt Shaw-Hero of the Day
Yogi Berra once famously said "It's not over till it's over" and the Hustlers Fastpitch Club embodied that phrase this past weekend while winning their third SCIFL Alliance tournament of the year in Santa Fe Springs this past weekend. The Hustlers posted a 4-1 record, three of the wins coming in their final at bat. Their first was in the first game of the day on Saturday against a familiar rival, Latin Heat. The Hustlers sloppy defense and first inning walks gave the Heat a 4-1 lead after two innings and after a Dave Hess solo HR in the third cut it to two, the Heat came back with three more on long HR's by the Heats' Martin Borgen and David Carillo. Trailing 7-2 in the fifth, the Hustlers clawed back into it with a Daniel Roth three run shot and a solo Stewie Proffitt bomb. Still trailing by a run in the final frame the Hustlers relied this time on small ball and constant pressure on the defense. The big hits being run scoring doubles off the bats of Kenny Shaw and Larry Watts jr giving the Hustlers a 10-7 lead which Bobby Cole was able preserve for the victory. In the second game the Hustlers were looking to avenge their loss in the last tournament at the hands of the Panteras. Joe Salcido took the mound in this one and in what has become a pattern, the Hustlers jumped out to a huge early lead on a three run HR by B.C. and a Luis Garcia two run job. The Panteras got two back in the first but in the second Cole added another two run HR to make the score 9-3. With the game in hand, Salcido was pulled in order to get the latest Hustler addition, Jim Flanagan some work on the mound. Jim performed well, allowing just three runs in three innings to the hot hitting Panteras and securing the 14-5 win. The days final game was agaist the Amigos and with a first or second seed all but secured and several key players missing, the Hustlers were probably looking forward to the party later that night and went out flat scoring just two runs and giving up five. The highlight of the day coming though on a Matt Shaw Homerun in the sixth. Kenny Shaw summed it up for all of us when he said "It's was great just to have Matt back on the bench and to have him Come back and hit a Homerun in his first game was unbeleivable." The loss gave the Hustlers the #2 seeding for the single elimination round and pitted them agaist Latin Heat. The Hustlers struck first keyed by Daniel Roth and Steve Proffitt doubles in the third but the Heat chipped away at the three run lead and by the fifth inning had tied the score 3-3. Then in the sixth the Heat took the lead on a two run HR. Trailing by two in the sixth, Steve Proffitt clubbed a towering Homerun to left and B.C. hit the right/center gap to tie the score. Again in the seventh, the Heat put the pressure on the Hustlers scoring a run but the Hustlers loaded the bases and scored the tying run on a clutch Dave Hess single and the winner on Matt Shaw's sac fly. On to the championship game where the Panteras would try to pay the Hustlers back for the previous days blowout. They plated three in their half of the first frame on a three run blast by Robert Morrison but the Hustlers came back with three on a triple by Springer and four consecutive singles, the last by Joe Janicke. The score remained tied until the fifth when the Panteras scored three on a Hustler miscue. The lead was trimmed to two in the bottom of the sixth on a Kasey Shaw RBI but was quickly regained on a Pantera solo HR coming off the bat of Mike Manilgus. So in the bottom of the seventh with the Hustlers trailing by three it was time to pull out all the stops. The Hustlers never say die motto again realized when they didn't even make an out before Matt Shaw stepped to the plate and once again played the hero knocking in the winning run giving the Hustlers the win and the Championship. A storybook ending really to what what has been a long past few months for the whole Hustler family. Yogi would be proud.

Hustlers bats on fire in Palm Springs
Under beautiful sunny skies and weather in the mid 70's the Hustlers were able to win their second tournament in three tries this season. Going back to October of 2006 the Hustlers placed first or second four times in five trips. The Hustlers are still not at full strength so it's hard to determine exactly where their potential lies. Matt Shaw and Luis Garcia were once again missing from the lineup but East coast transplants Kyle Smith and Greg Bernier were able to fill the holes quite nicely. Kasey Shaw continued to hone his skills at shortstop and has become this years Danny Cole filling in at any position and doing so very well while continuing to swing a hot bat at the plate. Dave Hess continued his assault on the elusive .600 mark at the plate collecting 14 hits while Daniel Roth with 13 RBI's knocked him and Kenny Shaw (10 runs) in. Doug Shaw was maybe the hottest Hustler of all batting a scorching .688 while nephew Kasey stepped up batting .563 and knocking in 10 runs from the ninth spot in the order. Joe Janicke and Larry Watts jr. as usual displayed gold glove defense while batting over .300. Steve Proffit was also steady at the plate batting an even .500 with 7 runs and 7 RBI's. On the mound the ageless "Papa" Joe Sacido was nearly unhittable giving up just 10 earned runs while posting a perfect 4-0 record. Bobby Cole chipped in a win in the quarter final game just missing a no hitter and batted .700 for the tournament legging out 5 triples. Coach Steve Proffitt commented, "Palm Springs has always been a great tournament for us and one in which we probably have more fun off the field. The times we spend together after games really brings this team closer and it carries over making us better on the field." The Hustlers would like to give a big thanks to John Dwyer Construction for sponsoring us in the tournament and making it possible for us to have so much fun. Below are some pics from the team party and game recaps.

Kenny and Kasey Shaw set the table scoring 7 runs in 7 at bats and Daniel and Dave knocked them in with 3 RBI's each. Joe Salcido ran his record to 5-0 on the season.

Sunday, March 24

This weekend the Hustlers took the field once again without a full squad. Work obligations and a last minute emergency left them without any spare players and it meant that Bobby Cole would have to pitch six games if the team was so lucky to get that far. Saturdays first game pitted the Hustlers against familiar foes, the Latin Heat. The Heat came out swinging and put up 14 runs against the Hustlers in a time shortened 4 inning game. The Hustlers started a comeback in the bottom of the fourth plating six keyed by a Dave Hess double but ran out of time to complete the comeback. There would be more...later. Going back to last tournament the loss marked the first time in over two years that Hustlers ace Bobby Cole had lost two consecutive games and he was determined to get his season turned around. Cole's season turned around winning the next 4 games against the Beer Nuts (7-6), Extreme (4-2), Rebels (7-3) and the P.S. Express (10-1). Joe Janicke, Kasey Shaw and Dave Hess had the hot bats on Saturday and Doug Shaw and Larry Watts jr. got hot on Sunday. In the championship game the Husters met up once again with you guessed it, Latin Heat. The Hustlers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning on a Steve Proffitt2 RBI single and was able to hold the Heat bats at bay until the top of the fifth when with the Hustlers leading 5-1 it started to unravel for Cole. Finally out of gas, Cole pulled himself after several hits and a couple of walks giving way to a very capable Kenny Shaw. Kenny held his own keeping the Hustlers close but the damage was done with the Heat plating eight runs to take the 9-5 lead. The Hustlers clawed back with 3 in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh but came out one hit short and had to settle for second best. It was another strong showing for the Hustlers and with the runner up finish they were able to build upon they're lead for the overall points championship in the SCIFL alliance. The next tournament will again be in Palm Springs on April 21-22. Check back for game recaps.

Hustlers champs in first NAFA Alliance tournament of 2007
NAFA 1
Hustler MVP Joe with Manager B.C.
With several key players missing from the roster for this past weekends 1st tournament in the NAFA Alliance season, coach Bob Cole was just hoping to get in a few games for practice and see what some of the other teams would look like for the coming year. With only three of last years starters combined with four players who were last minute additions we were still able to win four games, two in the final at bat en route to the tournament win. Leading the way was the Hustlers newest addition, Joe Salcido who took the team on his back and earned MVP honors picking up for Bobby Cole who was inaffective in his two starts. Dave Hess had a huge tournament batting .600 and providing a spark when the offense was stagnant. Kenny and Kasey Shaw came up big by getting on base and playing great defense up the middle. Gabe Trujillo was stellar at first stopping everything thrown his way, even most of Luis "loose cannon" Garcia's throws which by the end of the day on Saturday were right on target. Joe Janicke kept swinging a great bat all weekend and consistently hit the ball hard in just about every at bat. While Daniel Roth was only able to make one of our games, he made it count with an HR and four RBI's helping to secure a win. We also could not have done it without C.J. Salcido, Bill "the bull" Guzman, John Diekman and Marcell Bernal who each stepped up with a big hit, solid glove work and a great team first attitude which is what the Hustlers is all about. And last but not least Larry Watts Jr. who was injured but nonetheless came out to coach and be our inspirational leader. Next up for the Hustlers is Palm Springs March 24th and they expect to have the majority of the team back to defend their title.

Here's a brief recap of the weekends games.

Game 1 vs. Just Us was a back and forth game where Joe Salcido pitched a gem allowing only one earned run but had the Hustlers losing by a run going into the final inning. Joe Janicke, who had earlier hit a solo homerun tied the score with heads up Hustler baserunning by scoring from second base when the shortstop threw to first after bobbling a ground ball. In extra innings it was Just Us scoring first in the eighth with two runs. There was no quit in the Hustlers though and they left the defense on the field with three of their own in the bottom of the inning capped by a Marcel Bernal single to score Bob Cole and secure the 7-6 win.

Game two vs. the Silverhawks was a one sided affair with the Silverhawks scoring four in the first off a very rusty Bobby Cole. He was however able to settle in and allow only one earned run over the final six innings. If the pitching was bad the offense was even worse. The normally potent Hustler lineup was only able to muster three hits, two of them on the infield in the 6-0 loss.

In the last game of the day the Hustlers knew they needed a win against the Palm Springs Express to secure an important first round bye for Sunday's single elimination round. Kenny Shaw went behind the dish for the first time as a Hustler while Joe again took the mound and again pitched a gem allowing only a last inning run in the 5-1 win when the game was all but over. The Hustlers got all they needed in the second inning on four consecutive singles followed by three hit batters and a walk.

In Sundays first elimination game the Hustlers were paired agaist the Latin Heat. Bobby Cole took the mound and the first inning again was a thorn in his side. He walked the first three batters and allowed them all to score for an early 3-0 Heat lead. Two more unearned runs crossed the plate in the third before B.C. had to give way due to shoulder stiffness. Joe once again stepped up and shut down the Heat offense. A turning point in the game came when in the bottom of the fourth with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 out, Kenny Shaw made a diving stop in the hole and threw out the runner to end the inning. The Hustler offense woke up in the top of the fifth keyed by Daniel Roth's three run HR to get the Hustlers within one. In the sixth Daniel doubled to tie the score and Joe Janicke doubled to give the Hustlers the lead which was held to give the Hustlers the 7-5 win.

In the Championship final Joe Salcido took the mound against the Demens who are very similar to the Hustlers with a young, scrappy group of guys with a few veterans sprinkled in. This was another see-saw battle with the Hustlers going up 5-1 after the first, the big blow being a Dave Hess HR. The second inning was high scoring with the Demens scoring four and the Hustlers scoring five more to make it 10-5 after two innings. The Hustlers added one more in the third to end their scoring but the Demens weren't done. They showed their fight by getting three in the fourth and two in the sixth but Joe was able to buckle down and hold them scoreless in the final frame to keep the 11-10 win intact.

Hustlers after a tough win
Hi, sorry it took so long to get some details about the Nationals in Georgia but I was a bit burned out and frustrated about softball. Add to that some injuries to let heal and I just didn't even want to think of softball for a little while. Well here's a quick recap. In the first game we drew a play-in game against the J.S. Generals out of Pennsylvania. We came out swingin with Matt and Jay hitting homeruns and collecting 8 of the 10 RBI's in the 10-6 Hustlers win. Jays second homerun of the game was a 3 run shot coming in the seventh putting the game away. The second game was against a modified fastpitch team, Adco Tool Shed out of New York and this one was close, until the second inning. We actually started well, scoring two in the first and taking the early 2-1 lead agains the eventual tournament champs but we just couldn't hold off the bats of Adco. They scored 4 in the second and third and 6 in the fourth and beat us 15-2 in a run rule shortened game. Here's where my first bit of frustration come in. At the tournament we heard rumors of the Adco teams origins so when I got home I did a little research and found that Adco was a men's modified major team who last year place third and had several all tournament players at the modified nationals. They placed third behind the Heflin Gremlins and in front of Patsy's. You may recognize those names as being elite teams in the ISC world tournament series. They were able to play because since they were a modified team and had not competed traditional fastpith they could pick any division they wanted. Is the ASA so stupid not to realize what they were doing and put them in a division they would be more competitive in? Don't answer that. Well, after the blowout we in the losers bracket and slotted against the Oroville, CA Braves who just a month earlier somehow got dropped to a "C" level team after playin all year as a "B" team. Go figure. That didn't matter to us though as we were able to go out and beat them 9-6 in a tough battle that was a nailbiter untill the last pitch, a big strikeout with the tying run on first. Next in the losers bracket was Akadema sports out of Ohio. The game was tied 2-2 in the fourth when we were blindsided by an umpire who thought she'd like to decide the outcome of a game. With one out and the bases loaded I gave a stare in at her after a pitch that appeared to cut the plate in half ( I could go on and on about this topic, let's just say the plates at the Nationals have no black and a couple inches of white are also pretty hazy). Well surprise, surprise the next pitch was called illegal forcing in a run. Now that was my fourth game on the mound and not a single illegal pitch thrown and she decides now's a good time to call it. Needless to say, I lost focus and ended up walking that batter and then allowed a couple of broken bat singles in a row and we ended up giving up six in the innning and just couldn't recover although Doug missed a grand slam by inches in the seventh that would have made it interesting. It's because of this kind of crap that I think next year we'll try to qualify for the NAFA Nationals in Iowa. If we wanted to play "B" teams we would have went to the "B" National. Hopefully they can provide a level playing field for the teams that participate in their tournaments. Enough whining, overall we had a great time and a heck of a lot of fun. Me crashing the car after 5 minutes, Larry in the elevator, Danny C. playing cards, Dave and Lisa at the club, good times indeed. Going 2-2 in our first Nationals ain't bad, there have been a lot of teams that play for years and don't get that many wins. We'll take some time off and come back after the first of the year hungry to dominate the "C" division. We'll see you next year!

Nationals tune up tournament scheduled for 8/20 in Norwalk!!!!
Today the Hustlers fastpitch team participated in some practice games against some of the top teams in the "B" division of the SoCal ASA to serve as a warmup tournament for the upcoming Nationals. The Hustlers were the lone "C" team competing against the Panteras, Rounders and Amigos of the "B" league. The Hustlers were able to hold their own against the tough competition and while losing two of three they were right there in every game holding late leads in each game. From top to bottom the Hustlers were consistently putting the ball in play and executing all the little things it is going to take to get them far in the National tournament. Team founder Bobby Cole says "based on my experience in five Nationals and the way the team is playing right now I think with a little luck there's no reason we can't be a top ten team and beyond that who knows". There's about 10 days until the flight to Georgia takes off and until then maybe a few light workouts and we're ready. Check the website to find out how we're doing out there, we're going to try to post results on a daily basis.

Larry caps late inning rally for Hustlers
Wednesday, May 17

Tonight in Artesia the Hustlers faced a familiar rival, the Panteras in what would be one of the more exciting games of the season. The Panteras sent Ron Rupp and his devastating change up to the mound against Bobby Cole. The Hustlers struck first in the top of the third on a one out double by Dave Hess scoring two but they gave it right back in the bottom half of the inning scoring three on three Hustler miscues. The Panteras committed what would prove to be two costly running errors in the inning trying to steal home and twice making outs to bail the Hustlers out of the inning. In the final inning the first three Hustlers singled and after Jay Lopez tied the game with a single Larry Watts Jr. came up with a game winning groud out scoring the game winner from third. Bobby Cole did his job in the bottom half of the inning retiring the heart of the Panteras lineup in order. We caught up with the Hustlers skipper after the game and he commented, "this was a great game for us tonight and it gives us great momentum going into this weekends tournament in Lancaster. We feel like we can beat anybody right now."

Hustlers prevail 3-1 in extra innings over Gypsters
Wednesday, April 19

With the quality pitching in the Artesia league this season, many of the games have had low scores and at times no scores. If it weren't for extra innings, the Hustlers would have two 0-0 ties but luckily they were given a chance to play one more inning both times and walked away with wins. In tonights game against the Gypsters, there were a total of three hits through seven innings and no runs so for the second time threre would be another inning played. In the Hustlers half, with a runner starting on second base, Mike layed down a perfect bunt to advance the runner to third and a Gypster miscue allowed him to take first base. The next batter was hot hitting Gabe Trujillo and he promply singled up the middle. After an out and a wild pitch Dave Hess stepped up and poked a two run single to left to give the Hustlers a three run cusion. The Gypsters were able to get a run thaks to a Kenny Shaw single in their half of the inning but the Hustlers turned back a rally to preserve the 3-1 win. This weekend the Hustlers will be in Palm Springs to try and capture their first ever tournament championship. Check the site for scores and game recaps.

Jay's getting hot in Artesia
Wednesday, April 12

After a three week layoff, the Hustlers finally got back on the field. And just in time with an Alliance tournament in Palm Springs just ten days away and the Hustlers needing to get a few games in to shake off the cobbwebs. The Panteras were on the schedule again for the second straight game and with both teams knowing each other pretty well it was shaping up to be a close game. The Hustlers took an early 4-0 lead after the first inning but the Panteras closed the gap with one run in the second and third innings. The Hustlers got the two runs back though in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead and were able to hold it for the win.

Slim's .444 avg. leads Hustlers
Saturday, February 25

Today the Panteras Valentines tournament resumed as a double elimination format with the Hustlers beginning play against the Gloves. After a dissapointing start last weekend the team was desperate to get out to a good start and they did scoring three in the first and adding six more in the second. Two more in the third cemented the victory behind Bobby Cole and Ken Shaw, who combined for a 11-0 one hit shutout win. The next game of the day pitted the Hustlers against RAW who this past year was moved up to the "B" classification so they knew they would be in for a tough game. RAW jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings thanks to some Hustlers miscues and timely hitting. The Hustlers showed they wouldn't quit and scored four runs in the third keyed by a Steve Proffitt two run double. Raw added one more in the fifth to stretch the lead to 7-4. In the bottom of the seventh the Hustlers had their chance to win the game when after cutting the deficit to two, they had the bases loaded with no outs but just couldn't come through with the big hit to finish out the comeback. Now in the losers bracket they were to meet a tough Panteras lineup who figured to be a formidable opponent by themselves and when paired with AAU MVP pitcher Travis Price, the Hustlers knew they would have to play the game of their lives if they wanted to advance. They were holding their own through three innings with Bobby Cole matching hitless innings with Price but just couldn't hold off the Panteras for the whole game. The Panteras were able to score one in the fourth, three in the fifth and sixth, and one in the seventh while Price notched a perfect game on the mound. After the game the Hustlers manager Bobby Cole said "We played much better today and I think our showing this week will prepare us for next weeks beginning of the ASA Alliance at Santa Fe Springs". The correct answer for last weeks question was Kenny and Kasey Shaw collecting a total of eight hits last weekend in Norwalk.

Hustlers trimph over Raiders in epic duel
You better chuck and duck!!!
Proffitt with the game winning RBI
Wednesday, March 15

As is usually the case when the Raiders and the Hustlers match up with their aces in the circle, the hitting was scarce and the pitching dominates the action. Last nights game was no exception with former teammates Jesse Duncan and Bobby Cole taking the mound for their teams knowing that one run could be all it takes to win the game. For the Hustlers, Cole went eight innings giving up only one hit, a bloop single in the fourth and used his change up and sinker to induce twelve ground outs and eight strikeouts. Duncan was equally dominant, striking out twelve giving up just two hits, a third inning single and the game winning hit in the eighth by Steve Proffitt. In the eighth with the score tied at 0-0, the Raiders started their half of the inning with a baserunner on second. Duncan led off and grounded to first, moving the runner to third. The next batter then hit a high chopper to second and Kenny Shaw fielded it cleanly and Daniel Roth did a great job sealing off home plate to the runner and recorded the out. Cole then got the next batter on a comebacker to the mound. In the Hustlers half, Jay Lopez started the inning on second base and Proffitt wasted no time shooting one through the middle to give the Hustlers the 1-0 win. The victory made the Hustlers 2-0 in league play this year and they have yet to give up a run. We'll see if they can keep the streak going next week.

Hustlers rusty in rain shortened Valentines tourney
Sunday, February 19

For only the second time this year we recieved some measurable rainfall and for the second time the Southern California fastpitch season was put on hold. This time though the tournament was able to get at least one day of play in. The Hustlers were only able to get two of their three scheduled games in and they probably wish they could just start over. In the first game the Hustlers committed several errors, combine that with bad pitching, mental breakdowns on the basepaths and the lack of timely hitting and that added up to a disappointing loss to the Latin Heat 7-4. The Hustlers came back in the afternoon to play the Gamecocks and didn't fare much better losing 6-2. Kenny Shaw pitched better in the loss but was the victim of some fielding blunders and lack of run support. The lone extra-base hit of the day come from the bat of Matt Shaw, a solo homerun off Gamecocks ace Danny Zupp. The Hustlers were set to play the Lumberkings of Bakersfield on Sunday morning but a brief downpour was enough to postpone the games until Saturday the 25th. The schedule may change so check the site for game times. The good news is that the Hustlers really can't play any worse than last weekend. We hope.

Hustlers rebound with 7-0 shutout over Gypsters
Cal Cup BC
B.C. with shutout and HR in win
Wednesday, February 22

After a dismal showing in last weekend the Hustlers were able to bounce back and show what they're capable of with a 7-0 shutout against the Gypsters. It was a classic pitchers dual through the first three innings with the Gypsters Joe Salcido tossing a no-hitter and Hustlers ace Bobby Cole matching him giving up just one hit. The Hustlers got on the board with two in the fourth with a couple of seeing eye singles and a long triple by Mike. In the fifth they added another on a solo shot by Gabe Trujillo, his first. In the top of the seventh, the Hustlers put the game away with four more runs capped by a three run homerun by Bobby Cole. Meanwhile on the mound, he was able to keep the Gypster bats silent allowing no runs on three hits. The Hustlers will be off next Wednesday but back in action this weekend for the conclusion of Fernie's Valentines day tournament.

Panteras top Hustlers in Artesia opener 3-1
Wednesday, February 8

Tonight the Hustlers began the 2006 season in the Artesia league and the two months off showed. Bobby Gonzalez took the mound for the Panteras and was masterful allowing only 3 hits to the Hustlers aniemic hitting attack. The Hustlers looked good in the feild with youngster Kasey Shaw making a spectacular diving play in right field and Danny Cole throwing out a runner at the plate from left field but also showed some rust allowing two unearned runs. After the game team manager Bobby Cole said "we would like to play a little better and win but these games are really just practice for tournamnents and they give a chance to work on certain aspects of the game." Hopefully the Hustlers can get some things ironed out soon because the tournaments are just around the corner. Steve proffitt was the first to name Danny Cole as the Hustler with the first game winning RBI for a Hustler in a tournament. For his correct answer he wins a slap on the butt. Be sure to catch the Hustlers next weekend in Fernies Valentines Classic.

Kenny Shaw does it all in Hustlers win
9er pitching
Kenny impresses in Hustlers debut
Wednesday, February 15

Tonight the Hustlers fastpitch team got a glimpse of what they can expect from one of their newest acquisitions, Kenny Shaw. In the Hustlers 13-1 drubbing of a quality Edge fastpitch team, Kenny led the way at the plate going 4-4 with 2 RBI's and on the mound pitching six strong innings of two hit ball. The game was decided in the first inning when the Hustlers came out swinging and scored eight runs before an out was recorded. The Edge were able to score their lone run in the bottom of the first on a single and a sacrifice fly. The Hustlers scored five more in the top of the second capped by a Bobby Cole 3-run homerun. No more runs were scored by either team after that. The Hustlers face the Gypsters next week at 7:00, we'll see you there.

Hustlers place second in California Cup
Cal Cup team
Scrappy Hustlers finish 2nd in Cal Cup
Sunday, November 6

Today the Hustlers Fastpitch Club officially staked it's claim as one of the up and coming if not one of the top teams in the "C" classification of mens fastpitch softball with their second place finish in the second annual California Cup. With some of the top teams in all of California competing for the trophy the Hustlers knew it wouldn't be an easy task to take home the cup. The roster for the tournament was essentially the same as they played with all year except for the loss of Levi White and Dan Cole celebrating his 30th birthday at home. Larry Watts jr., Tony Carillo and Jeremy Walker were welcome additions to the team and are in talks to become permanent members. After a late night arrival on Friday many of the Hustlers bats and gloves must have missed the wakeup call on Saturday morning against their first opponent. The Palm Springs Express's Graham Balog was dominant striking out a record 16 Hustler batters while his offense was able to come up a couple of key hits after Hustler miscues. The Hustlers trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on second and coming around to score when the final out was made. The 2-1 loss meant the Hustlers had to step it up if they wanted a favorable draw for Sundays single elimination bracket. Well step it up they did with a 10-2 victory over the Rezmen of San Diego. The key hit in the game came when in the third inning and leading 4-0 the Hustlers Joe Janicke came up and delivered a two run two out single to take away any hope the Rezmen had of getting into the game. Hustlers hurler Bobby Cole took a no hitter into the final inning when a one out single scored two to break it up. The Hustlers needed to win their next game and get some help from the Rezmen to place first in their bracket. Their opponent was the Primos who they had success against in the past. A pair of triples from the speedy Steve Proffitt and a three run triple from Jay Lopez led the way for the Hustlers to post an easy 9-0 win. News came later that the Rezmen had taken care of the Express to give the Hustlers the #1 seed and a first round bye for Sunday. The first opponent for the day would be the Atomic Punks of Beaumont. The Hustlers sent them home with an impressive 11-1 win with the big blow coming off the bat of Larry Watts jr. in the form of a three run homer. The win meant the Hustlers would be in the semi-finals agains Quicksilver of Lancaster. This was a blow out from the first pitch. The first four batters in the Hustlers lineup didn't make an out and scored 11 runs in the 15-0 win and this time Bobby Cole would be able to complete his bid for a no-hitter, his first in a tournament. The win put the Hustlers where nobody but themselves thought they would be-in the finals for the California Cup. There they met an all-star team of sorts called California Chaos. They are a compilation of players from last years Nationals #3 Raymar team, this years Nationals #7 West Coast Cardinals and this years #17 Neilson Gamblers. The Hustlers took an early 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third but the Chaos came back with three runs, two coming on a home run by Scott Harrison. They added one in the fourth and one in the sixth to make the score 5-1. The Hustlers bats must have finally run out of hits after two days of crushing the ball all over Palm Springs. The final tally would be the Hustlers outscoring their opponents 47-10 and of those runs allowed only one was earned. Hustlers owner Bobby Cole gave all tournament honors to Daniel Roth for catching 6 games while hitting .569 and Jay Lopez who played a stellar shortstop and batted .643. The Hustlers will be back next year to try to improve on their second place finish and stake their claim as the best team in California.
